القرآن الكريم
Anonymous
The Quran is composed of verses (Ayat) that make up 114 chapters (suras) of unequal length which are classified either as Meccan (المكية) or Medinan (المدنية) depending upon the place and time of their claimed revelation. Muslims believe the Quran to be verbally revealed through the angel Jibrīl (Gabriel) from God to Muhammad gradually over a period of approximately 23 years beginning on 22 December 609 CE, when Muhammad was 40, and concluding in 632 CE, the year of his death.Muslims regard the Quran as the main miracle of Muhammad, the proof of his prophethood and the culmination of a series of divine messages that started with the messages revealed to Adam, regarded in Islam as the first prophet, and continued with Suhuf Ibrahim (Scrolls of Abraham), the Tawrat (Torah or Pentateuch) of Moses, the Zabur (Tehillim or Book of Psalms) of David, and the Injil (Gospel) of Jesus. The Quran assumes familiarity with major narratives recounted in Jewish and Christian scriptures, summarizing some, dwelling at length on others and in some cases presenting alternative accounts and interpretations of events. The Quran describes itself as a book of guidance, sometimes offering detailed accounts of specific historical events, and often emphasizing the moral significance of an event over its narrative sequence.

Tanakh: The Holy Scriptures
Anonymous
The JPS TANAKH is an entirely original translation of the Holy Scriptures into contemporary English, based on the Masoretic (the traditional Hebrew) text. It is the culmination of three decades of collaboration by academic scholars and rabbis, representing the three largest branches of organized Judaism in the United States. Not since the third century b.c.e., when 72 elders of the tribes of Israel created the Greek translation of Scriptures known as the Septuagint has such a broad-based committee of Jewish scholars produced a major Bible translation. In executing this monumental task, the translators made use of the entire range of biblical interpretation, ancient and modern, Jewish and non-Jewish. They drew upon the latest findings in linguistics and archaeology, as well as the work of early rabbinic and medieval commentators, grammarians, and philologians. The resulting text is a triumph of literary style and biblical scholarship, unsurpassed in accuracy and clarity.Ebook versions of this title may be purchased from most ebook vendors.

The New Testament (King James Version)
Anonymous
Despite a plethora of new translations in the second half of the twentieth century, the King James Version retains its power and appeal because "it has the intrinsic value of a classic and is an enduring masterpiece."Drury outlines the fascinating history of this magisterial translation, marveling at the "patient generosity" with which the translators sifted through and distilled a century of previous scholarship. He points out that their work has endured not only because of the astonishing care they took to reflect faithfully the syntax of the original Hebrew and Greek–which enabled them to dispense with the densely entangled prose style that characterized English writing at the time–but also because of their concern to writers from Milton to Coleridge to George Eliot. From the doctrinal richness of the letters of St. Paul to those four masterpieces of storytelling, the Gospels, The New Testament has served as a source of inspiration for centuries. To quote George Steiner on the centrality of the Bible: "What you have in hand is not a book. It is the book. That, of course, is what 'Bible' means. It is the book which, not only in Western humanity, defines the concept of a text. All our other books, however different in matter or method, relate, be it indirectly, to this book of books…All other books are inhabited by the murmur of that distant source."

Plants of the Gods: Their Sacred, Healing, and Hallucinogenic Powers
Richard Evans Schultes
• Numerous new and rare color photographs complement the completely revised and updated text. • Explores the uses of hallucinogenic plants in shamanic rituals throughout the world. • Cross-referenced by plant, illness, preparation, season of collection, and chemical constituents. Three scientific titans join forces to completely revise the classic text on the ritual uses of psychoactive plants. They provide a fascinating testimony of these "plants of the gods," tracing their uses throughout the world and their significance in shaping culture and history. In the traditions of every culture, plants have been highly valued for their nourishing, healing, and transformative properties. The most powerful of those plants, which are known to transport the human mind into other dimensions of consciousness, have always been regarded as sacred. The authors detail the uses of hallucinogens in sacred shamanic rites while providing lucid explanations of the biochemistry of these plants and the cultural prayers, songs, and dances associated with them. The text is lavishly illustrated with 400 rare photographs of plants, people, ceremonies, and art related to the ritual use of the world's sacred psychoactive flora.

The Nag Hammadi Library
Unknown Nag Hammadi
It is a collection of religious and philosophic texts gathered and translated into Coptic by fourth-century Gnostic Christians and translated into English by dozens of highly reputable experts. First published in 1978, this is the revised 1988 edition supported by illuminating introductions to each document. The library itself is a diverse collection of texts that the Gnostics considered to be related to their heretical philosophy in some way. There are 45 separate titles, including a Coptic translation from the Greek of two well-known works: the Gospel of Thomas, attributed to Jesus' brother Judas, and Plato's Republic. The word gnosis is defined as "the immediate knowledge of spiritual truth." This doomed radical sect believed in being here now--withdrawing from the contamination of society and materiality--and that heaven is an internal state, not some place above the clouds. That this collection has resurfaced at this historical juncture is more than likely no coincidence.--P. Randall Cohan

The I Ching or Book of Changes
Richard Wilhelm
It has exerted a living influence in China for 3000 years and interest in it has spread in the West. Set down in the dawn of history as a book of oracles, the Book of Changes deepened in meaning when ethical values were attached to the oracular pronouncements; it became a book of wisdom, eventually one of the Five Classics of Confucianism, and provided the common source for both Confucianist and Taoist philosophy. Wilhelm's rendering of the I Ching into German, published in 1924, presented it for the 1st time in a form intelligible to the general reader. Wilhelm, who translated many other ancient Chinese works and who wrote several books on Chinese philosophy and civilization, long resided in China. His close association with its cultural leaders gave him a unique understanding of the text of the I Ching. In the English translation, every effort has been made to preserve Wilhelm's pioneering insight into the spirit of the original. This 3rd edition, completely reset, contains a new forward by Hellmut Wilhelm, one of the most eminent American scholars of Chinese culture. He discusses his father's textual methods and summarizes recent studies of the I Ching both in the West and in present-day China. The new edition contains minor textual corrections, bibliographical revisions and an index.

Pirke Avot Sayings of the Jewish Fathers
Unknown
It is part of didactic Jewish ethical literature. Because of its contents, the name is sometimes given as Ethics of the Fathers. Pirkei Avot consists of the Mishnaic tractate of Avot, the second-to-last tractate in the order of Nezikin in the Mishnah, plus one additional chapter. Avot is unique in that it is the only tractate of the Mishnah dealing solely with ethical and moral principles; there is relatively little halakha (laws) in Pirkei Avot. (Wikipedia)
Genesis
Robert Alter
In between come many of the primal stories in Western culture: Adam and Eve's expulsion from the garden of Eden, Cain's murder of Abel, Noah and the Flood, the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, Abraham's binding of Isaac, the covenant of God and Abraham, Isaac's blessing of Jacob in place of Esau, the saga of Joseph and his brothers. In Robert Alter's brilliant translation, these stories cohere in a powerful narrative of the tortuous relations between fathers and sons, husbands and wives, eldest and younger brothers, God and his chosen people, the people of Israel and their neighbors. Alter's translation honors the meanings and literary strategies of the ancient Hebrew and conveys them in fluent English prose. It recovers a Genesis with the continuity of theme and motif of a wholly conceived and fully realized book. His insightful, fully informed commentary illuminates the book in all its dimensions.

The Children's Encyclopedia (Ten Volume Set)
Arthur Mee
Volume one (of ten volumes) is digitally preserved here: http://childrensencyclopedia.blogspot...The Children's Encyclopedia, originally titled The Children's Encyclopædia, was a printed encyclopedia originated by Arthur Mee, and published by the Educational Book Company Ltd., a subsidiary of the Amalgamated Press of London. It was published from 1908 through to 1964, and was found in many family homes throughout the British Empire. The format of the Encyclopedia was unusual: because it was originally published in fortnightly parts between March 1908 and February 1910. Some readers could have bound their own collections, but the first eight-volume sets were published in 1910.Each section contained a variety of articles, developing its various topics as it progressed. The work could be used as a conventional reference library (the last volume contained a very extensive alphabetical index), or each section could perhaps be read from start to finish. Articles could also be dipped into at random to provide entertainment and reading matter whenever required. The Encyclopedia was originally organised into the following sections (there were some changes in subsequent editions). (Some of these titles in fact cover scientific subjects such as geology, biology, astronomy, etc. but such scientific terms were generally avoided.) * Familiar Things, by "Many writers" * Wonder, by "The Wise Man" * Nature, by Ernest Bryant and Edward Step * The Child’s Own Life, by Dr. Caleb Saleeby * The Earth, by Dr. Caleb Saleeby * All Countries, by Frances Epps * Great Lives, by "Many writers" * Golden Deeds, by "Many writers" * Bible Stories, by Harold Begbie * Famous Books, by John Hammerton * Stories, by Edward Wright * Poetry, by John Hammerton * School Lessons, by several writers, including Lois Mee, Arthur's sister * Things To Make and Things To Do, by "Many writers"The Encyclopædia broke new ground in the approach to education, aiming to make learning interesting and enjoyable. Its articles were clearly written. Some - in particular the scientific series - would have been challenging even to intelligent teenagers. It aimed above all to develop character and sense of duty. The Encyclopedia was re-edited for the US market and retitled The Book of Knowledge (1911-12). A new company, Grolier, was founded to publish and distribute the book.

The Unholy Bible: Exposing the Lies Your Sunday School Teacher Told You
Nathan Harris
It provides quotes of all the horror that the Bible contains like the slaughter of entire cities, rape, and even baby killing. And it shows that the prophecy Jesus made about the end of the world failed.Harris provides an eye-opening critique of the Bible, showing that the least-read, most-sold book in all of history is a work of fiction. From the Introduction:Most of what people are taught about Christianity seems to be interpretation and not what the Bible actually says. And, even then, Christians seem to preach what they want the Bible to say, which sometimes can’t even be interpreted from it.Throughout this book we will look at what the Bible actually says and show that a Christian can only be someone who has not read the Bible, because it is so filled with inconsistencies and outright errors that no one could believe in it if they actually knew what the Bible said.Throughout this book, we will take a look at quotes that show the Christian God is more of a monster than something to be worshipped. And many of the passages we will examine show that God displays less compassion than normal human beings would in the same situation. We will also see that Jesus’ prophecy about the end of the world failed; that Satan is not the evil enemy of God the Church makes him out to be; that the conception of the afterlife in the Old and New Testaments are so different that they seem to come from two different religions; that many observable facts of nature contained in the Bible are completely wrong as well as the creation story of Genesis.Essentially, this book will show that the Sunday School Christianity that everyone learns is a lie and that Christianity is not something that people should shape their lives with.

Greek Lyric Poetry
David A. Campbell
First published in 1967 in the 'red Macmillan' series, it was reprinted by BCP in 1982 with addenda to the bibliography and an appendix reproducing a text of three substantial 'new' papyrus fragments by Archilochus, Stesichorus and Alcaeus. The extensive commentary gives assistance with matters of dialect and language, Homeric and Hesiodic comparisons, interpretation, content and metre. The book serves as an introduction to the poetics of the Greek archaic period - from the mid-seventh to the early fifth century BC - the 'bridge' between Homeric epic and Attic tragedy.

The Services Of Great And Holy Week And Pascha: According To The Use Of The Self Ruled Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese Of North America
The Orthodox Church
This second edition is half the thickness of the first and considerably lighter in weight, even though it has 343 additional pages, thanks to the high-quality thin Bible paper which was used. The print is far clearer and the page layouts make it much easier for the eye to follow. It includes thorough rubrics in red. The pages have ornamental borders and are adorned with icons in classic Orthodox styling. The sewn binding lies flat and has ribbon markers in black and red. Both front and back covers sport a gorgeous ornamental Orthodox cross in gold, and the page edges are likewise gilded. The tough and luxurious black cover material is ideal for embossing names in gold, thus increasing its appeal for gift-giving to both clergy and laity. The text includes complete services, with rubrics and helpful instructions, for every service (all 19 of them) of Holy Week and Pascha. Includes the three Bridegroom services, the three Liturgies of the Presanctified Gifts; the service of Holy Unction; the Vesperal Liturgy and 12 Passion Gospels of Holy Thursday; the Royal Hours, Vespers, and Lamentations of Holy Friday; the Vesperal Liturgy of Holy Saturday morning; Great and Holy Pascha; and the Agape Vespers of Sunday afternoon. The translations are taken from the Liturgikon, the Service Book of the Antiochian Archdiocese, and the Psalter According to the Seventy. The texts of the hymns are taken from the widely-used Kazan Byzantine music books. The English is the traditional semi-Elizabethan style beloved in many parishes. Services are in sequence in the order they are performed: no flipping around needed. Our hat is off to Archpriest John Winfrey and Antakya Press. We predict that libraries, scholars, and all Christians who study and love the prayers and hymns of the ancient Church will welcome this volume. --- Randall Mark Trainer

History of the Wars, Volume 5. Books 7.36-8. Gothic War
Procopius
In 527 CE he was made legal adviser and secretary of Belisarius, commander against the Persians, and went with Belisarius again in 533 against the Vandals and in 535 against the Ostrogoths. Sometime after 540 he returned to Constantinople. He may have been that Procopius who was prefect of Constantinople in 562, but the date of his death (after 558) is unknown.Procopius's "History of the Wars" in 8 books recounts the Persian Wars of emperors Justinus and Justinian down to 550 (2 books); the Vandalic War and after-events in Africa 532-546 (2 books); the Gothic War against the Ostrogoths in Sicily and Italy 536-552 (3 books); and a sketch of events to 554 (1 book). The whole consists largely of military history, with much information about peoples and places as well, and about special events. He was a diligent, careful, judicious narrator of facts and developments and shows good powers of description. He is just to the empire's enemies and boldly criticises emperor Justinian. Other works by Procopius are the "Anecdota" or "Secret History"--vehement attacks on Justinian, Theodora, and others; and "The Buildings of Justinian" (down to 558 CE) including roads and bridges as well as churches, forts, hospitals, and so on in various parts of the empire. The Loeb Classical Library edition of Procopius is in seven volumes.

I Am Fabulous: Blends for Emotional Well-Being
Desiree Mangandog
Clear clutter out of your life? Find direction and clarity? Still your mind? Increase momentum and wealth? Get over heartbreak? "We have been taught that aromatic use is the best way for essential oils to affect our moods and emotions. I am going to challenge that mainstream view. Yes, aromas perceived by the olfactory sense do affect the brain and mood immediately. I have also found that topical application of the oils on specific acupuncture points and meridians yield an even greater change in mood. Chinese medicine teaches us that each organ has a correlating emotion associated with it. The lungs are associated with sadness, liver with anger, heart with sadness, spleen with worry and overthinking, and kidneys with fear. Unresolved feelings can become trapped in these organs, as well as the corresponding meridians. "Have you ever heard of someone who weeps while receiving a message? Often, this is because trapped emotions have been released from the tissues. Have you known someone who has never been the same after a traumatic accident? The shock and fear have become trapped in the joints, bones, and muscles. It must be released in order for them to experience optimum wellness. With these blends, I provide locations along meridians that yield quick results. The combination of specific oils and targeted organ meridians will create quick emotional shifts." This book is rich with recipes for any emotional support you need. It contains 40 roller bottle blends and 5 diffuser blends. There are multiple blends to benefit you in transitions and experience grace through the common struggles we endure. Publication: 2016. Pages: 109. Binding: Softcover with a coil. Dimensions: 6" wide x 8½" tall.

The Verrine Orations 1: Speech Against Caecilus; First Speech Against Verres; Second Speech Against Verres, Books 1-2
Marcus Tullius Cicero
In his political speeches especially and in his correspondence we see the excitement, tension and intrigue of politics and the part he played in the turmoil of the time. Of about 106 speeches, delivered before the Roman people or the Senate if they were political, before jurors if judicial, 58 survive (a few of them incompletely). In the fourteenth century Petrarch and other Italian humanists discovered manuscripts containing more than 900 letters of which more than 800 were written by Cicero and nearly 100 by others to him. These afford a revelation of the man all the more striking because most were not written for publication. Six rhetorical works survive and another in fragments. Philosophical works include seven extant major compositions and a number of others; and some lost. There is also poetry, some original, some as translations from the Greek. The Loeb Classical Library edition of Cicero is in twenty-nine volumes.

Darby Translation of the Bible
Anonymous
More than 125 years after its introduction, it is still considered to be one of the most accurate English translations of the Bible. This edition was designed for friendly display as well as optimal navigation on many electronic devices to ensure your reading experience. For easy navigation you can make use of navigation links. Navigating to your preferred chapter can be done in different ways. In just a few clicks, you can be reading any chapter in the Bible. Special attention was given to the design of the Bible text to optimize the reading experience. John Nelson Darby (1800-1882) went in 1853 to Germany, where he established congregations in Dusseldorf, in Elberfeld, and in other towns. He was dissatisfied with the existing Bible versions in French and German, and so he collaborated with German and French followers in the creation of new versions in those languages. With some German associates he produced the "Elberfelder Bible," and with French-speaking followers he produced the "Pau Bible." Darby did not feel such a need for a new translation in English, because he considered the King James Version to be adequate for most purposes, and he encouraged his followers to continue to use it. But, he decided to produce a highly literal English version of the New Testament for study purposes. This New Testament was completed in 1867. The version is exceedingly literal, based upon modern critical editions of the Greek text. After Darby's death in 1882, certain of his followers in England produced an English version of the Old Testament based upon Darby's French and German translations. In 1890 this was published as the Old Testament portion of The Holy Scriptures. A New Translation from the Original Languages by J. N. Darby (G. Morrish, 1890). The complete Darby Bible is still reprinted and used now a days.

The New Testament in the Original Greek
Anonymous
From the time of its original revelation, handwritten copies continually were prepared in order tomaintain and preserve that original text into the modern era. All copies made prior to the invention of movable-type printing were made by hand, resulting in various scribal alterations, most of these being of a minor nature. Although the autographs no longer exist and no two manuscript copies are completely identical, sufficient evidence exists by which one can produce an accurate representation of the original text by comparing and evaluating the overall manuscript consensus. Robinson and Pierpont have taken the utmost care in preparing that text for this edition.Various other methods for restoration of the original NT text have fallen short of their goal, in part due to methodological subjectivity, and in part to a presuppositional bias against the claims of the Byzantine Textform. The texts created under such a bias tend to be based on only a handful of favored manuscripts, and fail to consider all transmissional factors in the preservation of the original text. As a result, the modern eclectic texts tend to preserve more of a caricature than the essence of the originals. In contrast, Robinson and Pierpont have applied many of the same methods of textual criticism to their task, but without the anti-Byzantine bias. Their method of "reasoned transmissionalism" is based on the wider scope of manuscript transmission throughout history. The preface of this edition explains the basic method by which the present editors have arrived at their basic text. The appendix contains Robinson's essay, "The Case for Byzantine Priority," which presents a rationale for and defense of the theory and methodology that has been applied in the preparation of this edition.
