Dirty Plotte # 1
Julie Doucet
These intensely-drawn strips explore some of Doucet's deepest and most bizarre fantasies: from masturbation with cookies (given to her by her mother, of course!), to various unlikely scenarios of her life as a man. In later issues, Doucet explored more complex themes: these stories of love, passion, and seemingly endless cycles of bad relationships are told with an unflinching candor and honesty and drawn with Doucet's characteristic eye for obsessive detail.

Boy in a China Shop: Life, Clay and Everything
Keith Brymer Jones
Front man in an almost famous band. Judge on The Great Pottery Throwdown. How did all that happen?By accident mostly. But I always say we make our own luck. What if an art teacher hadn't given me a lump of clay? What if the band had been really successful? What if I hadn't taken a photograph of a bowl to the buyer at Heals in London? What if she'd hated it? Or hadn't seen it... What if I hadn't agreed to dress up as Adele to make a crazy YouTube video? Every chapter of my book is based around an object (usually a pot) that's been significant in my life. It's just at trigger to let me go off in a lot of different directions and tell a few stories. A lot of stories. Dyslexia. The art teacher who changed my life. My Mother. My Father. A life-changing job interview with a man who lay under his car throughout. That video.Sifting through half-forgotten memories, trying to pick out the golden nuggets from the stuff that is definitely dross has been a curious, and at times hilarious, sometimes sad, but definitely enlightening process. So here it is - my pottery life with some very loud music and some pretty good dancing. And a lot of throwing, fettling and firing. Oh ...and a good dose of anxiety.

Glazing with an Emphasis on the Craft of Painting
Michael Wilcox
The methods of the Old Masters made available for today's artist. The range of rich colours employed by these earlier painters gave a mysterious depth and intensity to their work, a richness and luminosity which only the glazing technique could give. This book will enable the reader to achieve similar colour effects, Your work will improve dramatically.'Early Masters such as Rembrandt applied multiple layers of transparent paint to produce the deep, glowing hues and darks which typified their work; darks which seethed with hidden colour. The range of rich hues employed by these earlier painters gave a mysterious depth and intensity to their work, a richness and luminosity which only the glazing technique can give. The aim of this book is to equip today's artist with the technique of glazing developed by the Masters. Lessons from the past brought fully up to date'.
Wonderland
Kirsty Mitchell
In the six years it has taken to produce the project, the layers of its creation have been a vital and very personal part of the work. The series parallels two worlds, the fantasy of the finished photographs, but also the deeply emotional journey Kirsty has gone through in the process of bringing it to fruition. This has been documented in her 6-year online diary packed full of her reflections on grief and the narrative that runs through the work. For this reason the book has always been regarded as the final and most important part in completing the project and one that has taken a great deal of consideration. For this reason, we are delighted to announce Kirsty has chosen to finish the series on her own terms, and self-publish the Wonderland book in a manner that will fully reflect the attention to detail that is so key in her work. It has taken many years to dechiper the best way in which to translate the story faithfully into something that will honour Kirsty's original intentions, and also give back to the people who have helped the series grow in such an extraordinary way. In Kirsty's words this will be 'our book, on our terms' something which she strongly feels is the only way to say goodbye to such an indescribable part of her life, and to her beloved mother who this is dedicated to.

The Art of Seeing: Paradox and Perception in Orthodox Iconography
Maximos Constas
Drawing on the disciplines of art history, aesthetics, and theology, this innovative study explores the phenomenon of paradox-at once artistic, visual, and cognitive-through which sacred images disturb the eye and provoke the mind to reflection. Like a detour made necessary by an insurmountable obstacle, the paradox of the image marks the way, the mysterious path of ascent, but it also marks a place, for it is the irruption into the world of something beyond the world. In seeking presence over representation, the icon aims to deepen perception into the awareness that the absence of visual resemblance has the power to virtualize within itself resemblance to the invisible God.

Olive Cotton
Helen Ennis
Together, Olive and Max were an Australian version of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera or Ray and Charles Eames, and the photographic work they produced in the 1930s and early 1940s was bold, distinctive and quintessentially Australian. But in the mid-1940s Olive divorced Max, leaving Sydney to live with her second husband, Ross McInerney, and raise their two children in a tent on a farm near Cowra - later moving to a cottage that had no running water, electricity or telephone for many years. Famously quiet, yet stubbornly determined, Olive continued her photography despite these challenges and the lack of a dark room. But away from the public eye, her work was almost forgotten until a landmark exhibition in Sydney in 1985 shot her back to fame, followed by a major retrospective at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in 2000, ensuring her reputation as one of the country's greatest photographers.Intriguing, moving and powerful, this is Olive's story, but it is also a compelling story of women and creativity - and about what it means for an artist to try to balance the competing demands of their art, work, marriage, children and family.'Absorbing ... illuminating and moving' Inside Story

Photography 1924-1954
Aleksandr Michajlovic Rodcenko
In it, Alexander Lavrentiev, grandson of the photographer, includes more than 400 pictures reproduced under a broad categorical structure that allows the reader to gain insight into Rodchenko's work. What comes across most clearly from the content and form of these photos is the artist's desire to depict an image of purposeful individuality and an idealized relationship between humankind and the built world under construction in the Soviet Union. Individual portraits generally contain a device, such as a reflection, or capture some movement that obliterates the standard style of Western portraiture. Buildings, even trees, are photographed to draw attention to the space they hold rather than to depict scenic landscapes. The photos are stunningly original.

Havana
Robert Polidori
On the surface his subjects are buildings, but at the core his lens is focused on the remnants and traces of lives he finds scattered in hallways, left in back rooms and worn on façades. Havana is a particularly rich setting for Polidori's inquiries. The curves and columns that line the streets refer to past eras and speak of the political, social and economic forces that have driven the city to its present condition. Through his rigorous and sensitive examination -- facilitated by a sense of color and composition that makes his photographs feel like vivid memories -- Polidori delicately peels away the patina of daily living and reveals the juxtapositions that create a city's identity. In this city the peddler lives where the countess once resided; children dance and tumble where merchants conducted their business. Each photograph is a discovery and a fragment of the city's biography.

Blackbook Sessions
Jorn Stiller
Represented in this book are not so much the finished pieces of art that ultimately make their way onto walls or other outside surfaces, but rather the 'art' that; precedes this: the art of the coveted Blackbook. Some are no more than sketches or plans with all their strenghts and weaknesses, while others are complex finished works of art. The objective of this book is to show how the creation of graffiti evolves from quick illustrations of thoughts and ideas through a process of trial and error to arrive at the final 'style'. Because many writers guard their Blackbooks closely this book provides a rare opportunity to study the raw talent of some of the world's most famous graffiti artists, past and present.

In fact there were several of his paintings and I could not believe my eyes. Seeds Of The Pomegranate
Sherry L. Ross
Ross' poetry that she is able to "extend the everyday moment into deep mythology, using the commonplace as an avenue into the emotions." In SEEDS OF THE POMEGRANATE, Sherry uses the ancient Greek myth of Persephone as a metaphor for her own life. In the myth of Persephone, which is retold in the book's forward, Persephone is abducted by Hades, the god of the underworld. Her mother, the earth goddess Demeter, is both grief stricken and enraged at her daughter's disappearance. Obsessed with finding her daughter she neglects her duties and the land dries up and becomes cold, the leaves fall from the trees, and death hunts mankind. Eventually, she confronts Hades in his world of the dead and they make a bargain. Hades has come to love Persephone and recognizes her suffering when he sees her joy in being reunited with her mother. Persephone has only eaten six seeds from the pomegranate fruit since her abduction. Demeter and Hades agree that Persephone may spend six months above ground with her mother and six months in the world of the dead with Hades. Persephone accepts the compromise and becomes both the Queen of the Underworld, sharing the throne with her husband, and a symbol of rebirth, fertility and joy, when she returns to the upper world and her mother. In SEEDS OF THE POMEGRANATE, each poems is treated as a seed of this fruit on which the bargain was made. The poems moves from summer to fall and contain the nostalgic sense of loss we all sometimes feel in our lives: losses both concrete and hard to define. The winter poems move to the center of the book, where a few of the poems are as dark as Hades' world. Then, moving towards spring, we find healing and tenderness. Through the everyday process of loss and compromise, we can also find much to gain in growth and experience. Our relationships are fuller and we can also know joy.

The Child Works
Gottfried Helnwein
The Child:Works by Gottfried Helnwein features a major theme that has appeared in his work over the last thirty-five years. For Helnwein, the child is the symbol of innocence, but also of innocence betrayed. In today's world, the malevolent forces of war, poverty, and sexual exploitation and the numbing, predatory influence of modern media assault the virtue of children. Robert Flynn Johnson, the curator in charge of the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts, has assembled a thought-provoking selection of Helnwein's works and provided an insightful essay on his art in this exhibition catalogue.Helnwein's work concerning the child includes paintings, drawings, and photographs, and it ranges from subtle inscrutability to scenes of stark brutality.Of course, brutal scenes - witness The Massacre of the Innocents - have been important and regularly visited motifs in the history of art. What makes Helnwein's art significant is its ability to make us reflect emotionally and intellectually on the very expressive subjects he chooses. Many people feel that museums should be a refuge in which to experience quiet beauty divorced from the coarseness of the world. This notion sells short the purposes of art, the function of museums, and the intellectual curiosity of the public. The Child: Works by Gottfried Helnwein will inspire and enlighten many.

Mexican Color/Color Mexicano
Poniatowska
Mexican Color explores the historical and contemporary uses of color in this country where virtually every environment -- in the home, in public spaces, and in natural settings -- is rich with vibrant explosions of color.-- This is the first book to present the entire history and culture of Mexico through the innovative and amazing use of color as a central expression of life.-- From the Aztecs who decorated their buildings to attract the attention of the gods and the brilliant archaeological paintings of the Mayas and Toltecs to the contemporary palettes of Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueriros, Jose Clemente Orozco, and Rufino Tamayo, Mexico is, and has always been, defined by its use of color.-- In a fascinating introduction, noted writer Elena Poniatowska maps the sites of color's most profound presence in Mexican clothes, textiles, rural homes, markets, masks, fruits, vegetables, courtyards, contemporary and folk art, interior spaces, as well as ancient and contemporary architecture.-- A treasure trove of lifestyle ideas, Mexican Color encourages readers to bring the richness of vibrant color into their own lives and homes.

Forgotten Gods - The Art of Yoann Lossel
Yoann Lossel
136 pages illustrated with the golden artworks of the French artist.Forgotten Gods is the name of a painting I created in 2013, using the very same technique that promoted my work: graphite and gold leaf. For this illustration, I was inspired by an encounter with a large deer during a stroll in the moonlit forest. Thriving on the emotion this sighting generated as I crossed tall iced over grass, surrounded by trees frozen in their exquisite prisons of crystal, my steps resonating in the mysterious silence of the night, I began dreaming of a tribute to the forest, the one I live in as well as the others, to nature and to its liveliness.Of all my works, this image is undeniably the one that has traveled the most, all around the world, thus speaking to the souls of many cultures. Some symbols are powerful enough to cross our differences and bring us together to remind us that all of our civilizations have a common background.Forgotten Gods is a door to Another World, this is what I wish for this book: that it will delight you and take you elsewhere for a stroll with me.
