John Climacus: The Ladder of Divine Ascent (The Classics of Western Spirituality)

John Climacus
America John Climacus: The Ladder of Divine Ascent edited and translated by Colm Luibheid and Norman Russell notes on translation by Norman Russell, preface by Kallistos Ware Prayer is the mother and daughter of tears. It is an expiation of sin, a bridge across temptation, a bulwark against affliction. It wipes out conflict, is the work of angels, and is the nourishment of everything spiritual. John Climacus (c. 579-649) The Ladder of Divine Ascent was the most widely used handbook of the ascetic life in the ancient Greek Church. Popular among both lay and monastics, it was translated into Latin, Syriac, Arabic, Armenian, Old Slavonic, and many modern languages. It was written while the author (who received his surname from this book) was abbot of the monastery of Catherine on Mount Sinai. As reflected in the title, the ascetical life is portrayed as a ladder which each aspirant must ascend, each step being a virtue to be acquired, or a vice to be surrendered. Its thirty steps reflect the hidden life of Christ himself. This work had a fundamental influence in the particularly the Hesychastic, Jesus Prayer, or Prayer of the Heart movement. Pierre Pourrat in his History of Christian Spirituality calls John Climacus the most important ascetical theologian of the East, at this epoch, who enjoyed a great reputation and exercised and important influence on future centuries. +

A Theology of the Ordinary

Julie Canlis
But what about the goodness (and challenge) of living our 'normal' lives for God? Her meditations led her to give three brief lectures on 'Being Ordinary' that help us understand - theologically - why our ordinary lives are the only place where our faith can be lived out. A Theology of the Ordinary is associated with the Godspeed film and the livegodspeed movement.

On God and Christ, The Five Theological Orations and Two Letters to Cledonius: St. Gregory of Nazianzus

Gregory of Nazianzus
A brilliant orator and accomplished poet, he placed before the Church his interpretation of the sublime mystery of the God revealed as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. These five sermons, probably delivered as a series at the small chapel of the Resurrection in Constantinople, where Gregory was the bishop in charge of loyal "Nicenes," contain Gregory's profound teaching. The English translation aims to capture for the present-day reader something of the atmosphere of intellectual excitement and spiritual exhilaration experienced by his first listeners. In addition, this work contains a new translation of Gregory's letters to Cledonius, which contain more focused reflections on the person of Jesus Christ, laying the groundwork for later Christology.

The Complete Works

Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite
The real identity of the person who chose to write under the pseudonym of Dionysius the Areopagite is unknown. Even the exact dates of his writings have never been determined. Moreover the texts themselves, though relatively short, are at points seemingly impenetrable and have mystified readers over the centuries. Yet the influence of this shadowy figure on broad range of mystical writers from the early middle ages on is readily discernible. His formulation of a method of negative theology that stresses the impotence of humans' attempt to penetrate the "cloud of unknowing" is famous as is his meditation on the divine names.Despite his influence, relatively few attempts have been made to translate the entire corpus of his written into English. Here in one volume are collected all of the Pseudo-Dionysius' works. Each has been translated from the Migne edition, with reference to the forthcoming Göttingen critical edition of A.M. Ritter, G. Heil, and B. Suchla. To present these works to the English-speaking public, an outstanding team of six research scholars has been assembled. The lucid translation of Colm Luibheid has been augmented by Paul Rorem's notes and textual collaboration. The reader is presented a rich and varied examination of the main themes of Dionysian spirituality by René Roques, an incisive discussion of the original questions of the authenticity and alleged heresies in the Dionysian corpus by Jaroslav Pelikan, a comprehensive tracing Dionysius' influence on medieval authors by Jean Leclercq, and a survey by Karlfried Froehlich of the reception given the corpus by Humanists and sixteenth-century Reformers.

On the Unity of Christ

Cyril of Alexandria
It was written after the Council of Ephesus (431) to explain his doctrine to an international audience. Cyril argues for the single divine subjectivity of Christ, and describes how it encompasses a full and authentic humanity in Jesus - a human experience that is not overwhelmed by the divine presence, but fostered and enhanced by it. Christology becomes then, for St Cyril, a paradigm for the transfigured and redeemed life of the Christian. There is an introduction to the historical and theological background of the time, of the text and to St Cyril himself.

On Grace and Free Will

Augustine of Hippo
Afterwards, in opposition to the Pelagians, he proves that grace is not bestowed according to our merits. He explains how eternal life, which is rendered to good works, is really of grace. He then goes on to show that the grace which is given to us through our Lord Jesus Christ is neither the knowledge of the law, nor nature, nor simply remission of sins; but that it is grace that makes us fulfil the law, and causes nature to be liberated from the dominion of sin. He demolishes that vain subterfuge of the Pelagians, to the effect that "grace, although it is not bestowed according to the merits of good works, is yet given according to the merits of the antecedent good-will of the man who believes and prays." He incidentally touches the question, why God commands what He means Himself to give, and whether He imposes on us any commands which we are unable to perform. He clearly shows that the love which is indispensable for fulfilling the commandments is only within us from God himself. He points out that God works in men's hearts to incline their wills whithersoever He willeth, either to good works according to his mercy, or to evil ones in return for their deserving; His judgment, indeed, being sometimes manifest, sometimes hidden, but always righteous. Lastly, he teaches us that a clear example of the gratuitousness of grace, not given in return for our deserts, is supplied to us in the case of those infants which are saved, while others perish though their case is identical with that of the rest."

The Epistle of Polycarp to the Philippians (Annotated)

Polycarp
Irenaeus was his disciple, and tells us that "Polycarp was instructed by the apostles, and was brought into contact with many who had seen Christ" (Adv. Haer., iii. 3; Euseb. Hist. Eccl., iv. 14).

The Christian On The Mount: A Treatise On Meditation Wherein The Necessity, Usefulness, And Excellency Of Meditation Are Discussed

Thomas Watson
Meditation is a duty wherein consists the essentials of religion, and which nourishes the very life-blood of it. That the Psalmist may show how much the godly man is habituated to this blessed work of meditation, he subjoins, "In his law does he meditate day and night;" not but that there may be sometimes intermission: God allows time for our calling, he grants some relaxation; but when it is said, the godly man meditates day and night, the meaning is, frequently-he is much conversant in the duty. Thomas Watson was an English preacher and author who obtained great fame preaching until the Restoration when he was ejected as the vicar of St. Stephen's Walbrook for noncomformity. Watson continued to exercise his ministry privately and upon the Declaration of Indulgence in 1672 he obtained a license to preach at the great hall in Crosby House.

The Life of the Virgin

St. Maximus the Confessor
Originally written in Greek and now surviving only in Old Georgian, it is now translated for the first time into English. It is a work that holds profound significance for understanding the history of late ancient and medieval Christianity, providing a rich source for understanding the history of Christian piety. This Life is especially remarkable for its representation of Mary's prominent involvement in her son's ministry and her leadership of the early Christian community. In particular, it reveals highly developed devotion to Mary's compassionate suffering at the Crucifixion, anticipating by several centuries an influential medieval style of devotion known as “affective piety” whose origins generally have been confined to the Western High Middle Ages.

The Life of Moses

Gregory of Nyssa
Gregory of Nyssa This great spiritual master of the fourth century was born as the general persecution of Christians was ending. One of the Greek Cappadocian Fathers (the other two were Gregory's brother, St. Basil the Great, and their mutual friend, St. Gregory Nazianzen), Gregory has come to be regarded increasingly as the most brilliant and subtle thinker and most profound mystical teacher of the three. Whether or not one agrees with Jean Danielou who saw Gregory as the founder of mystical importance within the Christian tradition. The Life of Moses has special significance because it reflects Gregory's spiritual sense of the Scriptures. He maintained that the ultimate purpose of the Bible was not its historical teachings but its capacity for elevating the soul to God. Gregory saw the totality of the spiritual life as an epektasis, a continual growth or straining ahead, as in the words of St. Paul, Forgetting the past, I strain for what is still to come. Gregory frames an immensely significant synthesis of the earlier Hellenistic and Jewish traditions in this work. He describes the spiritual ascent as taking place in three stages, symbolized by the Lord's revelation of Himself to Moses, first in light, then in the cloud and, finally, in the dark. This translation and introduction, winner of the Christian Research Foundation Award, has been expertly rendered by Professors Abraham Malherbe of Yale University and Everett Ferguson of Abilene Christian University.

When I Don't Desire God: How to Fight For Joy: Study Guide

John Piper
The problem is that many people, after being persuaded, find that this truth is both liberating and devastating. It's liberating because it endorses our inborn desire for joy. And it's devastating because it reveals that we don't desire God the way we should. What do you do when you discover the good news that God wants you to be content in him, but then find that you aren't? If joy in God were merely the icing on the cake of Christian commitment, this book would be insignificant. But Piper argues that joy is so much more. Our being satisfied in God is necessary to show God's worthiness and to sustain sacrifices of love. Jesus endured the cross for the joy that was set before him. He tasted it. It sustained him through the deepest suffering. His Father was glorified. His people were saved. That is what joy in God does. The absolutely urgent question becomes: What can I do if I don't have it? With a pastor's heart and with radical passion for the glory of Christ, John Piper helps you answer that question.

A Conquering Faith: Doctrinal Foundations for Christian Reformation

William O. Einwechter
The Biblical teaching concerning God's sovereignty, Christ's lordship in the gospel, the authority of God's law, the self-authenticating truths of God's existence and the inspiratin and authority of Scripture, the dominion mandate, and the triumph of Christ and His church in history are necessary antidotes to the man-centered theology plaguing the Church at the beginning of the 21st century.

Recovering a Covenantal Heritage: Essays in Baptist Covenant Theology

Richard C. BarcellosJames White
It in no way pretends to be a fully worked-out Baptist covenant theology. It contains essays by thirteen different authors who do not necessarily advocate the fine details of every contribution, something that is quite common with multiple-author works. After the Preface and Introduction, the first main section is historical. It seeks to set a historical-theological context for the reader. The second section of this work discusses various biblical issues related to covenant theology - the Abrahamic Covenant, the Old and New Covenants, Acts 2 and Colossians 2. The third section of the book, though the shortest, seeks to put things together, though certainly not in any comprehensive sense. It is my hope that this work will both challenge and instruct Baptist readers and introduce paedobaptists into part of the thought-world of Baptist covenant theology. The Editor Richard C. Barcellos, Ph.D. Grace Reformed Baptist Church Palmdale, CA

The Services Of Great And Holy Week And Pascha: According To The Use Of The Self Ruled Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese Of North America

The Orthodox Church
This second edition is half the thickness of the first and considerably lighter in weight, even though it has 343 additional pages, thanks to the high-quality thin Bible paper which was used. The print is far clearer and the page layouts make it much easier for the eye to follow. It includes thorough rubrics in red. The pages have ornamental borders and are adorned with icons in classic Orthodox styling. The sewn binding lies flat and has ribbon markers in black and red. Both front and back covers sport a gorgeous ornamental Orthodox cross in gold, and the page edges are likewise gilded. The tough and luxurious black cover material is ideal for embossing names in gold, thus increasing its appeal for gift-giving to both clergy and laity. The text includes complete services, with rubrics and helpful instructions, for every service (all 19 of them) of Holy Week and Pascha. Includes the three Bridegroom services, the three Liturgies of the Presanctified Gifts; the service of Holy Unction; the Vesperal Liturgy and 12 Passion Gospels of Holy Thursday; the Royal Hours, Vespers, and Lamentations of Holy Friday; the Vesperal Liturgy of Holy Saturday morning; Great and Holy Pascha; and the Agape Vespers of Sunday afternoon. The translations are taken from the Liturgikon, the Service Book of the Antiochian Archdiocese, and the Psalter According to the Seventy. The texts of the hymns are taken from the widely-used Kazan Byzantine music books. The English is the traditional semi-Elizabethan style beloved in many parishes. Services are in sequence in the order they are performed: no flipping around needed. Our hat is off to Archpriest John Winfrey and Antakya Press. We predict that libraries, scholars, and all Christians who study and love the prayers and hymns of the ancient Church will welcome this volume. --- Randall Mark Trainer

By What Authority?: An Evangelical Discovers Catholic Tradition

Mark Shea
As an Evangelical, Shea accepted the principle of "sola scriptura" (Scripture alone) as the basis of faith. Now as a Catholic convert, he skillfully explains how and why Sacred Tradition occupies a central role in Divine Revelation.Tracing his own journey of intellectual and spiritual awakening, Shea begins by looking for a rejoinder to those modern-day false prophets who would claim that Scripture itself is not to be trusted, and ends with his conviction that tradition, as explained by the Catholic Church, is the only sure guarantee of the truth of the revelation of Jesus Christ.

Knowing the Living God

Paul David Washer
This workbook can be used as a 13-week study for individuals, families, Sunday school classes, small groups, and churches. Only the truths of Scripture, understood with the mind and communicated through doctrine, can provide that sure foundation upon which we should establish our beliefs and our behavior and determine the validity of our emotions and experiences. The study of doctrine is both an intellectual and devotional discipline. It is a passionate search for God that should always lead the student to greater personal transformation, obedience, and heartfelt worship. Knowing the Living God is primarily a biblical study and does not contain much in the way of colorful illustrations, quaint stories, or even theological expositions. It was the desire of the author to provide a work that simply points the way to the Scriptures and allows the Word of God to speak for itself. The great goal of this study is for the student to have an encounter with God through His Word. Founded upon the conviction that Scripture is the inspired and infallible Word of God, this book has been designed in such a way that it is literally impossible for the student to advance without an open Bible before him or her. Paul Washer's previously published work, The One True God, has been massively expanded, revised, and modified--with about one hundred pages of additional material--to become the first book of his Biblical Foundations for the Christian Faith series by Media Gratiae. The Biblical Foundations for the Christian Faith Series: Book One: Knowing the Living God Book Two: Discovering the Glorious Gospel Book Three: Discerning the Plight of Man Book Four: Understanding the Discipline of Fasting Book Five: Studying the Holy Scriptures More information at mediagratiae.org

The New Testament in the Original Greek

Anonymous
From the time of its original revelation, handwritten copies continually were prepared in order tomaintain and preserve that original text into the modern era. All copies made prior to the invention of movable-type printing were made by hand, resulting in various scribal alterations, most of these being of a minor nature. Although the autographs no longer exist and no two manuscript copies are completely identical, sufficient evidence exists by which one can produce an accurate representation of the original text by comparing and evaluating the overall manuscript consensus. Robinson and Pierpont have taken the utmost care in preparing that text for this edition.Various other methods for restoration of the original NT text have fallen short of their goal, in part due to methodological subjectivity, and in part to a presuppositional bias against the claims of the Byzantine Textform. The texts created under such a bias tend to be based on only a handful of favored manuscripts, and fail to consider all transmissional factors in the preservation of the original text. As a result, the modern eclectic texts tend to preserve more of a caricature than the essence of the originals. In contrast, Robinson and Pierpont have applied many of the same methods of textual criticism to their task, but without the anti-Byzantine bias. Their method of "reasoned transmissionalism" is based on the wider scope of manuscript transmission throughout history. The preface of this edition explains the basic method by which the present editors have arrived at their basic text. The appendix contains Robinson's essay, "The Case for Byzantine Priority," which presents a rationale for and defense of the theory and methodology that has been applied in the preparation of this edition.

The Art of Seeing: Paradox and Perception in Orthodox Iconography

Maximos Constas
Drawing on the disciplines of art history, aesthetics, and theology, this innovative study explores the phenomenon of paradox-at once artistic, visual, and cognitive-through which sacred images disturb the eye and provoke the mind to reflection. Like a detour made necessary by an insurmountable obstacle, the paradox of the image marks the way, the mysterious path of ascent, but it also marks a place, for it is the irruption into the world of something beyond the world. In seeking presence over representation, the icon aims to deepen perception into the awareness that the absence of visual resemblance has the power to virtualize within itself resemblance to the invisible God.

Modern King James Version of the Holy Bible

The 1963 edition has been out of print for over 34 years, being replaced by this more readable and improved edition of the same Bible. The Modern King James Version of the Bible is an update of the Authorised King James Version in today's English. Besides the language update, it has these differences:1) Many older editions of the KJV have a center column in which they suggest a better translation, many of these suggestions have now been put into the text.2) The names of animals of the Bible have been corrected according to scientific studies today;3) The titles to the Psalms and names of places have been translated to their actual meaning rather than their original name, such as Hor-hagidgad=The Hole in the Cleft.4) Those places which are incorrect have been changed (e.g. 'Passover' instead of 'Easter'; 'Joshua' instead of 'Jesus' in Hebrews 4; 'expanse' is replaced by 'firmament'; 'eunoch' for 'officer'; 'Let it not Be ' for 'God forbid'; 'came into being' for 'made' in John 1:3);5) places where the King James Version paraphrases have been replaced by a direct translation from the original;6) the Greek names for Old Testament characters are given the same name as in the King James Version;7) money, titles, weights, etc. are translated as they are in the original King James Version (e.g. denarius instead of penny). The reviser has no thrust in words, nor left out words, in order to establish some personal belief as to what the Bible ought to say. The Modern King James Version can be easily understood in the pew when t speaker is using the King James Version.

Holy Scripture: The Ground And Pillar Of Our Faith, Volume Iii: The Writings Of The Church Fathers Affirming The Reformation Principle Of Sola Scriptura

David T. King
The Roman Catholic Church teaches that the principle is illegitimate because, she claims, it is unhistorical. By this she means that sola Scriptura is a theological novelty in that it supposedly has no support in the teaching of the early Church. Roman apologists charge that the teaching on Scripture promoted by the Reformers introduced a false dichotomy between the Church and Scripture which elevated Scripture to a place of authority unheard of in the early Church. The Church of Rome insists that the early Church fathers, while fully endorsing the full inspiration of the Old and New Testaments, did not believe in sola Scriptura. This volume is a compilation of the teaching of the Church fathers on the primacy, sufficiency and ultimate authority of Scripture. It contains one of the most extensive documentations of the patristic understanding of Scripture in the English language brought together in one volume. The editors have gone to great lengths to provide the primary sources where the quotations can be found in the original works, where appropriate. The documentation provided reveals in the clearest possible terms the Church fathers’ belief in the material and formal sufficiency of Scripture. By material sufficiency we mean that all that is necessary to be believed for faith and morals is revealed in Scripture. Formal sufficiency means that all that is necessary for faith and morals is clearly revealed in Scripture, so that an individual, by the enablement of the Holy Spirit alone, can understand the essentials of salvation and the Christian life. Page after page gives eloquent testimony to the supreme authority that Scripture held in the life of the early Church and serves as a much needed corrective to Rome’s misrepresentation of the Church fathers and her denigration of the sufficiency and final authority of Scripture.

The Presence of God

O.P. Fr. Anselm Moynihan
Now available in the United States for the first time! This little gem of a book has moved many to respond with greater reverence and love to the hidden Guest of their souls. "Fr. Moynihan writes about being aware of God as Somebody. Somebody who loves us, lives with us and guides our actions. People still continue to read and re-read and to recommend this booklet which has endured and will continue to endure." (Austin Flannery, OP) "This booklet has the enduring quality of a classic." Exhorting One Another: The Book of Hebrews

John Piper
Biblical counsel does not direct people to esteem themselves – it directs them to esteem God, and doing this means waging war. A Sunday sermon isn’t enough; neither is a weekly small group. To persevere in this fight, we are to “exhort one another every day, as long as it is called ‘today,’ that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin” (Hebrews 3:13). Hebrews teaches us that perseverance is essential in salvation, and that it is a community project. Satisfy your soul in the ultimate Treasure so you move away from comfort and toward need; fight for the salvation of your brothers and sisters in Christ; hold fast to the faith; encourage one another.

Disability and the Sovereign Goodness of God

John Piper
They affect joints, bones, nervous systems, lungs, hearts, and brains. And even in the United States — a country that leads the world in medical innovation and technology — roughly 20% of its citizens live with a disability. No church is immune. This means every church leader must be prepared to answer very hard questions about the goodness and sovereignty of God.Does God have a good design in my disability? To this hard question God is not silent. But if we're to hear his answer, we must submit our hearts to his word. Looking at what the Bible says is the aim of this collection of resources from pastor John Piper. This ebook — including four sermons and an interview with a man of a disabled son — focuses on John 5:1–18 and John 9:1–38 and is designed to serve pastors who will be called on to minister God’s Word to God’s people at decisive points in their lives. The question is not if disabilities will surface in your church, the question is how you will respond when they do? At that decisive moment, what will you say?

A Treatise on the Law and Gospel

John Colquhoun
He also impresses us with the importance of knowing this relationship. Colquhoun especially excels in showing how important the law is as a believer’s rule of life without doing injury to the freeness and fullness of the gospel. By implication, he enables us to draw four practical conclusions: (1) the law shows us how to live; (2) the law as a rule of life combats both antinomianism and legalism; (3) the law shows us how to love; and 4) the law promotes true freedom.Table of Contents:1. The Law of God or the Moral Law in General2. The Law of God as Promulgated to the Israelites from Mount Sinai3. The Properties of the Moral Law4. The Agreement between the Law and the Gospel9. The Establishment of the Law by the Gospel10. The Believer’s Privilege of Being Dead to the Law as a Covenant of Works11. The High Obligations under Which Believers Lie12. The Nature, Necessity, and Desert of Good WorksQuote from the Author:“The law and the gospel are the principal parts of divine revelation; or rather they are the center, sum, and substance of all the other parts of it. Every passage of sacred Scripture is either law or gospel, or is capable of being referred either to the one or to the other . . . If then a man cannot distinguish aright between the law and the gospel, he cannot rightly understand so much as a single article of divine truth. If he does not have spiritual and just apprehensions of the holy law, he cannot have spiritual and transforming discoveries of the glorious gospel; and, on the other hand, if his view of the gospel is erroneous, his notions of the law cannot be right.”—John Colquhoun

I Am: A Oneness Pentecostal Theology

David S. Norris
Rejecting a triumphalistic reading of church history, he argues that the first-century church had a very specific christological confession, one very different from what the church later came to believe. Norris demonstrates how the writers of the New Testament, specifically anchored in a Jewish conception of the absolute oneness of God were able to celebrate Jesus Christ in the Incarnation. The author works to demonstrate that this christological understanding is biblical, historical, and logical.

The End: A Study Of The Book Of Revelation

Scott Hahn
Scott Hahn, the Greek word apocalypse was used by ancient Jews to refer to the moment, following the seven-day wedding ceremony, when the bridal couple went into the huppah, or bridal tent, and the bride removed her veil for the first time. It was the moment of unveiling when the bride revealed herself as she really was. In the same way, Dr. Hahn says the final book of the New Testament is an ultimate unveiling, the moment when the Lord of the Universe reveals Himself to His Bride, the Church. In a dramatic Bible Study, Dr. Hahn demonstrates why this little-studied book contains many of the keys to understanding the Gospels. He explains that, for those students willing to examine the historical background to the New Testament, the Book of Revelation actually summarizes the central doctrines of Faith. Scott outlines the four principal ways of interpreting this book by referring to: (1) past events, (2) stages in Church history, (3) future events and (4) ongoing spiritual struggles of individual Christians and the Church.

The Good Heart

John Eldredge
Yet, many Christians find it hard to even talk about matters of the heart; undoubtedly, they know the verse in Jeremiah 17:9 that says the heart is "desperately wicked." So, how can we talk about loving God with all our heart? About living "from the heart"? ... Because there is good news that has been stolen from the "Good News": The Gospel teaches that the work of Jesus Christ reaches even to the human heart. This may be the most important CD ever released by Ransomed Heart, because its implications are so far-reaching to so many areas of our lives--to our relationships, our calling, and our walk with God. We invite you to come and discover what God meant when he promised to set a new heart within us (Ez 36:26) ... and what Jesus offered when he talked about the "good and noble heart" (Luke 8:15). The truth will set you free. Truly. (2 AUDIO CDS)

A New Day of Small Beginnings

Pierre Courthial
His interpretation of history is written from the perspective of a sovereign and personal God overseeing His covenantal plan—a design that remains unthwarted through the ages. From a heavenly panorama, he presents a clear image of history from antiquity to the deification of the modern state. Courthial wrote with two major themes. First, he boldly declares that in its two millennia, the Church has established four grand dogmas, with the fifth not yet established. The accepted dogmas are the orthodox doctrines of the Holy Trinity, the incarnation of Jesus Christ, salvation by grace through faith, and the authority of Holy Scripture. The fifth dogma, yet to be established, is the theonomic dogma, which states that man in every aspect of his life finds himself placed under the authority of divine Law. His second theme traces the providential hand of God, which weaves His purpose through history in anticipation of the earthly victory of Christ's kingdom over the idolatrous forces of humanism.

Love your Enemies

Hieromonk Grēgorios
Prior to committing a sin, we view it through the lens of insensibility, and thus consider the sin to be entirely natural. However, after it has been committed, we look at the same sin through the lens of despair, which magnifies it and leads us to the certain belief that we are beyond God's forgiveness, thereby causing us to despair over our very salvation.Christ, however, has revealed to us a sure way by which we can obtain the absolution of our sins, no matter how great the offense: by forgiving with all our heart those who have wronged us and loving them without regard to what they have done.

The Pearl: Seven Hymns on the Faith

Ephrem the Syrian
This edition has a linked Table of Contents and has been wonderfully formatted (searchable and interlinked) to work on your eBook reader. Ephrem the Syrian was a Syriac and a prolific Syriac-language Hymnographer and theologian of the 4th century. His works are hailed by Christians throughout the world and many denominations venerate him as a saint. He has been declared a Doctor of the Church in Roman Catholicism. He is especially beloved in the Syriac Orthodox Church.Ephrem wrote a wide variety of Hymns, poems, and sermons in verse, as well as prose biblical exegesis. These were works of practical theology for the edification of the church in troubled times. So popular were his works, that, for centuries after his death, Christian authors wrote hundreds of pseudepigraphal works in his name. Ephrem's works witness to an early form of Christianity in which western ideas take little part. He has been called the most significant of all of the fathers of the Syriac-speaking church tradition. You can purchase other religious works directly from Wyatt North Publishing.Enjoy.

Iamblicus On The Mysteries (Neoplatonism: Theology For Wanderers In The New Millennium, Book Two)

Manly P. Hall
But we can see that everything he touched he handled with a peculiar, wonderful mystical reverence. He was never satisfied merely to approach things on an intellectual level. He had to go beyond this. Therefore, his name is associated with one step or degree of the Neoplatonic Ladder of development, the Ladder of the Soul, rising from opinion through all the different degrees of intellect culminating at the upper end in Theurgy. The five-part archival audio tape series upon which this pamphlet series is based ("Doctrines of Neoplatonism," transcribed by Clarke E. Johnston), was given by Manly P. Hall in 1983 to students who were interested in learning more about the ancient wisdom. It seemed to have been one of his favorite subjects down through the years, for he spoke and wrote about it frequently during his long career. In fact, the foreword to his book "Lectures on Ancient Philosophy" declared that the basis of it was Neoplatonism. In the last few years of his life, Mr. Hall said that after years of study and reflection, he had come to believe that the doctrines of Neoplatonism had descended to us in a purer form than nearly any other philosophical system. This system seemed more suitable to we active, extroverted Western people. He believed this was true because though it was as deep and thorough as any other approach to enlightenment, its precepts were more easily understood and their relative simplicity tended to impel an interested person to put them into practice by beginning to learn to live a more philosophic life. The material in this series provides an excellent overview of Neoplatonism that we hope those who read it may be inspired to study the subject themselves. As anyone who has spent time in such study and learned its value will tell you, it is worth all the time you can give it, with its maximum value coming from the disciplined application of its precepts to your daily life. The Evergetinos: A Complete Text

Center for Traditionalist Orthodox Studi
In the spiritual laboratory of the Egyptian deserts, these seekers after salvation, enlightenment, and union with Christ brought into sharp focus the teachings of the Apostles and the message of Holy Writ in their daily lives and activities. The stern, the loving, “fools for Christ”—all of the exemplars of Christian Sainthood, the many inhabitants of the many mansions above, are to be found in the rich and profitable lives portrayed in this collection. Also to be found are perfect models for every modern Christian who wishes sincerely to imitate those who have walked the path towards moral and spiritual perfection. This is the first English translation of this wonderful treasury of spiritual wisdom. The Center for Traditionalist Orthodox Studies is pleased to announce that, with the publication, on July 1, 2008, of the fourteenth and last volume—the third volume of Book Four—of the first complete text in the English language of The Evergetinos, we will now issue this classical Orthodox collection of the sayings and aphorisms of the Desert Fathers (as well as other Hesychastic writings) in a four-book library set, corresponding to the original Greek publication. These four volumes will be available in an attractive paperbound and a hardbound edition, in two color printing (red and black), with Byzantine-style line drawings, and replete with the original Prologue of St. Nicodemos the Hagiorite, an historical introduction by Archbishop Chrysostomos of Etna, a Preface by Hieromonk Dr. Gorazd, Director of the Institute of Eastern Christianity at the Charles University in Prague, and footnotes and indices. Each volume will be approximately 400 pages in length. This monumental Patristic translation, twenty years in preparation, is the most important publication yet undertaken by the Center for Traditionalist Orthodox Studies. The Evergetinos, compiled by St. Makarios of Corinth and first published by St. Nicodemos in 1783, is a companion volume of The Philokalia—indeed a precursor, of sorts, to that work—, and together with it an essential and classical spiritual guide for Orthodox Christians seeking the inner life of spiritual transformation. The project, a collaborative effort, was initiated by Archbishop Chrysostomos while he was a Visiting Scholar at Oxford University in 1988 and continued to completion under his direction and editorship, and that of Hieromonk Patapios, with the collaboration of Bishop Ambrose of Methone, Bishop Auxentios of Photike, Monk Chrysostomos, Dr. Constantine Kokenes, Nun Lydia, Professor John V. Petropoulos, the late Professor John V. Rexine, and Reverend Gregory Telepneff.

Religious Trojan Horse: How False Teachings from Neo-Evangelicals, the New Religious Right, and the Spiritual Left have invaded the Church to establish a coming Religious World Government

Brannon Howse
Godless worldviews have been eroding Europe's and America's Judeo-Christian heritage for years, but now the problem has taken a dire turn for the worse. While false teachers have been around since biblical times, infiltration of the church has increased alarmingly, just as Jesus predicted in Matthew 24.Well known evangelical and pro-family leaders have joined in events, alliances, and common causes with a shocking array of unbiblical partners. As a result, many contemporary "Christian" leaders embrace and encourage the false Jesus and false gospels of Mormonism, the New Age Movement, Roman Catholicism, Word of Faith teachers, the New Apostolic Reformation, Eastern Mysticism, and the spiritual left. Our bitterest philosophical enemies have made it past the gatekeepers of both mainstream and evangelical Christian thought, and anti-Christian worldviews have assembled within the walls of our churches. As a result, hostile forces wreak havoc in the minds and hearts of believers who are caught unaware.

Covenant Theology 0ST601

J. Ligon Duncan III
Covenant theology is the Bible’s way of explaining and deepening our understanding of (1) the atonement; (2) our assurance; (3) the sacraments; (4) the continuity of redemptive history; and (5) Dynamic of God’s sovereignty and Christian responsibility/piety. The doctrine of the covenants is thus important for both Reformed systematic and biblical theology (the study of special revelation from the standpoint of redemptive history). The course will survey the successive biblical covenants from a redemptive historical perspective as well as examine the bi-covenantal structure of creation and redemption. Consideration will be given to issues such as the relation of the Old and New Testaments, the significance of the covenants for the doctrine of the atonement, for understanding sacramental theology, the implications of Covenant Theology for Reformed hermeneutics and more. Emphasis will be placed on the role of the Biblical doctrine of the covenants for preaching and pastoral ministry.
