John Climacus: The Ladder of Divine Ascent (The Classics of Western Spirituality)

John Climacus
America John Climacus: The Ladder of Divine Ascent edited and translated by Colm Luibheid and Norman Russell notes on translation by Norman Russell, preface by Kallistos Ware Prayer is the mother and daughter of tears. It is an expiation of sin, a bridge across temptation, a bulwark against affliction. It wipes out conflict, is the work of angels, and is the nourishment of everything spiritual. John Climacus (c. 579-649) The Ladder of Divine Ascent was the most widely used handbook of the ascetic life in the ancient Greek Church. Popular among both lay and monastics, it was translated into Latin, Syriac, Arabic, Armenian, Old Slavonic, and many modern languages. It was written while the author (who received his surname from this book) was abbot of the monastery of Catherine on Mount Sinai. As reflected in the title, the ascetical life is portrayed as a ladder which each aspirant must ascend, each step being a virtue to be acquired, or a vice to be surrendered. Its thirty steps reflect the hidden life of Christ himself. This work had a fundamental influence in the particularly the Hesychastic, Jesus Prayer, or Prayer of the Heart movement. Pierre Pourrat in his History of Christian Spirituality calls John Climacus the most important ascetical theologian of the East, at this epoch, who enjoyed a great reputation and exercised and important influence on future centuries. +

The New Testament (King James Version)

Anonymous
Despite a plethora of new translations in the second half of the twentieth century, the King James Version retains its power and appeal because "it has the intrinsic value of a classic and is an enduring masterpiece."Drury outlines the fascinating history of this magisterial translation, marveling at the "patient generosity" with which the translators sifted through and distilled a century of previous scholarship. He points out that their work has endured not only because of the astonishing care they took to reflect faithfully the syntax of the original Hebrew and Greek–which enabled them to dispense with the densely entangled prose style that characterized English writing at the time–but also because of their concern to writers from Milton to Coleridge to George Eliot. From the doctrinal richness of the letters of St. Paul to those four masterpieces of storytelling, the Gospels, The New Testament has served as a source of inspiration for centuries. To quote George Steiner on the centrality of the Bible: "What you have in hand is not a book. It is the book. That, of course, is what 'Bible' means. It is the book which, not only in Western humanity, defines the concept of a text. All our other books, however different in matter or method, relate, be it indirectly, to this book of books…All other books are inhabited by the murmur of that distant source."

Genesis

Anonymous
It tells how God created the world as very good, but that it was distroyed in the flood as a result of man's disobedience. The new world after the flood was also spoiled by human sin (ch. 11). The call of Abraham, through whom all the nations would be blessed, gives hope that God's purpose will eventually be realized through Abraham's descendants (ch. 49).

Guardians of the Garden (Guardians Book I)

Theresa Pocock
At least there she would be free from the garden’s magic, free to lead her own life, and free to never again think about ancient apples, or duty, or life unending. Seth Johnson's sister is losing her battle with cancer, and his parents seem to have given up on trying to save her. He cannot let her die. He will do anything to stop it including cutting a deal with a mercenary. Neither Seth nor Miriam want to be caught up in the tide of fate and feelings destined for them, but with such harshly opposing goals their worlds are bound to collide. If Miriam and Seth cannot find a way to have faith in each other this will end with the death of a beloved sister, a destroyed relationship, and the secret of immortality revealed to a pre-apocalyptic world.Pocock takes her readers to a land where myth, folklore and reality merge, where love is strong, fear runs deep, and the end of the world is coming.

On God and Christ, The Five Theological Orations and Two Letters to Cledonius: St. Gregory of Nazianzus

Gregory of Nazianzus
A brilliant orator and accomplished poet, he placed before the Church his interpretation of the sublime mystery of the God revealed as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. These five sermons, probably delivered as a series at the small chapel of the Resurrection in Constantinople, where Gregory was the bishop in charge of loyal "Nicenes," contain Gregory's profound teaching. The English translation aims to capture for the present-day reader something of the atmosphere of intellectual excitement and spiritual exhilaration experienced by his first listeners. In addition, this work contains a new translation of Gregory's letters to Cledonius, which contain more focused reflections on the person of Jesus Christ, laying the groundwork for later Christology.

The Complete Works

Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite
The real identity of the person who chose to write under the pseudonym of Dionysius the Areopagite is unknown. Even the exact dates of his writings have never been determined. Moreover the texts themselves, though relatively short, are at points seemingly impenetrable and have mystified readers over the centuries. Yet the influence of this shadowy figure on broad range of mystical writers from the early middle ages on is readily discernible. His formulation of a method of negative theology that stresses the impotence of humans' attempt to penetrate the "cloud of unknowing" is famous as is his meditation on the divine names.Despite his influence, relatively few attempts have been made to translate the entire corpus of his written into English. Here in one volume are collected all of the Pseudo-Dionysius' works. Each has been translated from the Migne edition, with reference to the forthcoming Göttingen critical edition of A.M. Ritter, G. Heil, and B. Suchla. To present these works to the English-speaking public, an outstanding team of six research scholars has been assembled. The lucid translation of Colm Luibheid has been augmented by Paul Rorem's notes and textual collaboration. The reader is presented a rich and varied examination of the main themes of Dionysian spirituality by René Roques, an incisive discussion of the original questions of the authenticity and alleged heresies in the Dionysian corpus by Jaroslav Pelikan, a comprehensive tracing Dionysius' influence on medieval authors by Jean Leclercq, and a survey by Karlfried Froehlich of the reception given the corpus by Humanists and sixteenth-century Reformers.

On the Unity of Christ

Cyril of Alexandria
It was written after the Council of Ephesus (431) to explain his doctrine to an international audience. Cyril argues for the single divine subjectivity of Christ, and describes how it encompasses a full and authentic humanity in Jesus - a human experience that is not overwhelmed by the divine presence, but fostered and enhanced by it. Christology becomes then, for St Cyril, a paradigm for the transfigured and redeemed life of the Christian. There is an introduction to the historical and theological background of the time, of the text and to St Cyril himself.

On Grace and Free Will

Augustine of Hippo
Afterwards, in opposition to the Pelagians, he proves that grace is not bestowed according to our merits. He explains how eternal life, which is rendered to good works, is really of grace. He then goes on to show that the grace which is given to us through our Lord Jesus Christ is neither the knowledge of the law, nor nature, nor simply remission of sins; but that it is grace that makes us fulfil the law, and causes nature to be liberated from the dominion of sin. He demolishes that vain subterfuge of the Pelagians, to the effect that "grace, although it is not bestowed according to the merits of good works, is yet given according to the merits of the antecedent good-will of the man who believes and prays." He incidentally touches the question, why God commands what He means Himself to give, and whether He imposes on us any commands which we are unable to perform. He clearly shows that the love which is indispensable for fulfilling the commandments is only within us from God himself. He points out that God works in men's hearts to incline their wills whithersoever He willeth, either to good works according to his mercy, or to evil ones in return for their deserving; His judgment, indeed, being sometimes manifest, sometimes hidden, but always righteous. Lastly, he teaches us that a clear example of the gratuitousness of grace, not given in return for our deserts, is supplied to us in the case of those infants which are saved, while others perish though their case is identical with that of the rest."

What We Are In Christ

E.W. Kenyon
What our Father has done for us in Christ has profound implications for the way we live our Christian life. This message is, in many ways. the heart of the revelation that God gave, to E. W. Kenyon. It is simple, somewhat repetitive, but can have life-changing power in the life of a believer who takes the time to absorb these Realities. These teachings call us to examine the Scriptures anew and reject many of the popular ideas that have held the sons of God in bondage. Jesus said we would know the Truth and the Truth would set us free. Paperback - 93 pages

The Nag Hammadi Library

Unknown Nag Hammadi
It is a collection of religious and philosophic texts gathered and translated into Coptic by fourth-century Gnostic Christians and translated into English by dozens of highly reputable experts. First published in 1978, this is the revised 1988 edition supported by illuminating introductions to each document. The library itself is a diverse collection of texts that the Gnostics considered to be related to their heretical philosophy in some way. There are 45 separate titles, including a Coptic translation from the Greek of two well-known works: the Gospel of Thomas, attributed to Jesus' brother Judas, and Plato's Republic. The word gnosis is defined as "the immediate knowledge of spiritual truth." This doomed radical sect believed in being here now--withdrawing from the contamination of society and materiality--and that heaven is an internal state, not some place above the clouds. That this collection has resurfaced at this historical juncture is more than likely no coincidence.--P. Randall Cohan

The Life of the Virgin

St. Maximus the Confessor
Originally written in Greek and now surviving only in Old Georgian, it is now translated for the first time into English. It is a work that holds profound significance for understanding the history of late ancient and medieval Christianity, providing a rich source for understanding the history of Christian piety. This Life is especially remarkable for its representation of Mary's prominent involvement in her son's ministry and her leadership of the early Christian community. In particular, it reveals highly developed devotion to Mary's compassionate suffering at the Crucifixion, anticipating by several centuries an influential medieval style of devotion known as “affective piety” whose origins generally have been confined to the Western High Middle Ages.

The Life of Moses

Gregory of Nyssa
Gregory of Nyssa This great spiritual master of the fourth century was born as the general persecution of Christians was ending. One of the Greek Cappadocian Fathers (the other two were Gregory's brother, St. Basil the Great, and their mutual friend, St. Gregory Nazianzen), Gregory has come to be regarded increasingly as the most brilliant and subtle thinker and most profound mystical teacher of the three. Whether or not one agrees with Jean Danielou who saw Gregory as the founder of mystical importance within the Christian tradition. The Life of Moses has special significance because it reflects Gregory's spiritual sense of the Scriptures. He maintained that the ultimate purpose of the Bible was not its historical teachings but its capacity for elevating the soul to God. Gregory saw the totality of the spiritual life as an epektasis, a continual growth or straining ahead, as in the words of St. Paul, Forgetting the past, I strain for what is still to come. Gregory frames an immensely significant synthesis of the earlier Hellenistic and Jewish traditions in this work. He describes the spiritual ascent as taking place in three stages, symbolized by the Lord's revelation of Himself to Moses, first in light, then in the cloud and, finally, in the dark. This translation and introduction, winner of the Christian Research Foundation Award, has been expertly rendered by Professors Abraham Malherbe of Yale University and Everett Ferguson of Abilene Christian University.

Epic of Eden: Understanding the Old Testament Study Guide

Sandra Richter
Sandra Richter clearly and powerfully communicates a history of God's redeeming grace, weaving together a story that runs from the Eden of the Garden to the garden of the New Jerusalem.Through text and video teaching, Dr. Richter uses this 12-week study to bring a new dimension to the history of the ancient Near East, orienting any study group in time, geography, culture, redemption, and relevance to today - all without diminishing her reader's faith or "dumbing down" the scripture.Legendary Bible stories take on new life as Dr. Richter clearly articulates their part of a larger pattern, revealing an even deeper significance for the tales individually. The Epic of Eden video study is ideal for serious church groups wanting a meaty study of biblical text, as would anyone eager for a strategic grasp of the good, the bad, and the ugly of the Old Testament and how it relates to God's activity in the present.

The New Testament

Richmond Lattimore
Published in its entirety for the first time in 1996, this New Testament is itself a classic of another kind — the words of the Gospel and the apostles presented for the modern reader in fresh English by a writer without pretensions as a biblical scholar, who was an authority on the Greek language in which these texts have come down to us. The New York Times hailed the first volume as "an achievement that places us more deeply in Lattimore's debt than any other in a long and diligent career."Lattimore's aim was to provide a simple, literal rendering in which the syntax and order of the Greek dictate the character of the English style. He lets the words of the apostles and early disciples speak for themselves with an accuracy and fidelity to the original language that is a gift to today's reader.

A Conquering Faith: Doctrinal Foundations for Christian Reformation

What's So Amazing About Grace?: Curriculum With Books and Video

Philip Yancey

Yancey explores these questions and sets grace in the midst of life's stark images. The video features segments of a conversation with Philip Yancey, interviews with others, and current news clips. This study and discussion format examines grace's life-changing power and will help participants identify the presence of grace in their daily lives.Include: Leader's GD, 6 Participants GD, Book and 120 Minute Video

The Services Of Great And Holy Week And Pascha: According To The Use Of The Self Ruled Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese Of North America

The Orthodox Church
This second edition is half the thickness of the first and considerably lighter in weight, even though it has 343 additional pages, thanks to the high-quality thin Bible paper which was used. The print is far clearer and the page layouts make it much easier for the eye to follow. It includes thorough rubrics in red. The pages have ornamental borders and are adorned with icons in classic Orthodox styling. The sewn binding lies flat and has ribbon markers in black and red. Both front and back covers sport a gorgeous ornamental Orthodox cross in gold, and the page edges are likewise gilded. The tough and luxurious black cover material is ideal for embossing names in gold, thus increasing its appeal for gift-giving to both clergy and laity. The text includes complete services, with rubrics and helpful instructions, for every service (all 19 of them) of Holy Week and Pascha. Includes the three Bridegroom services, the three Liturgies of the Presanctified Gifts; the service of Holy Unction; the Vesperal Liturgy and 12 Passion Gospels of Holy Thursday; the Royal Hours, Vespers, and Lamentations of Holy Friday; the Vesperal Liturgy of Holy Saturday morning; Great and Holy Pascha; and the Agape Vespers of Sunday afternoon. The translations are taken from the Liturgikon, the Service Book of the Antiochian Archdiocese, and the Psalter According to the Seventy. The texts of the hymns are taken from the widely-used Kazan Byzantine music books. The English is the traditional semi-Elizabethan style beloved in many parishes. Services are in sequence in the order they are performed: no flipping around needed. Our hat is off to Archpriest John Winfrey and Antakya Press. We predict that libraries, scholars, and all Christians who study and love the prayers and hymns of the ancient Church will welcome this volume. --- Randall Mark Trainer

The Unholy Bible: Exposing the Lies Your Sunday School Teacher Told You

Nathan Harris
It provides quotes of all the horror that the Bible contains like the slaughter of entire cities, rape, and even baby killing. And it shows that the prophecy Jesus made about the end of the world failed.Harris provides an eye-opening critique of the Bible, showing that the least-read, most-sold book in all of history is a work of fiction. From the Introduction:Most of what people are taught about Christianity seems to be interpretation and not what the Bible actually says. And, even then, Christians seem to preach what they want the Bible to say, which sometimes can’t even be interpreted from it.Throughout this book we will look at what the Bible actually says and show that a Christian can only be someone who has not read the Bible, because it is so filled with inconsistencies and outright errors that no one could believe in it if they actually knew what the Bible said.Throughout this book, we will take a look at quotes that show the Christian God is more of a monster than something to be worshipped. And many of the passages we will examine show that God displays less compassion than normal human beings would in the same situation. We will also see that Jesus’ prophecy about the end of the world failed; that Satan is not the evil enemy of God the Church makes him out to be; that the conception of the afterlife in the Old and New Testaments are so different that they seem to come from two different religions; that many observable facts of nature contained in the Bible are completely wrong as well as the creation story of Genesis.Essentially, this book will show that the Sunday School Christianity that everyone learns is a lie and that Christianity is not something that people should shape their lives with.

By What Authority?: An Evangelical Discovers Catholic Tradition

Mark Shea
As an Evangelical, Shea accepted the principle of "sola scriptura" (Scripture alone) as the basis of faith. Now as a Catholic convert, he skillfully explains how and why Sacred Tradition occupies a central role in Divine Revelation.Tracing his own journey of intellectual and spiritual awakening, Shea begins by looking for a rejoinder to those modern-day false prophets who would claim that Scripture itself is not to be trusted, and ends with his conviction that tradition, as explained by the Catholic Church, is the only sure guarantee of the truth of the revelation of Jesus Christ.

Knowing the Living God

Paul David Washer
This workbook can be used as a 13-week study for individuals, families, Sunday school classes, small groups, and churches. Only the truths of Scripture, understood with the mind and communicated through doctrine, can provide that sure foundation upon which we should establish our beliefs and our behavior and determine the validity of our emotions and experiences. The study of doctrine is both an intellectual and devotional discipline. It is a passionate search for God that should always lead the student to greater personal transformation, obedience, and heartfelt worship. Knowing the Living God is primarily a biblical study and does not contain much in the way of colorful illustrations, quaint stories, or even theological expositions. It was the desire of the author to provide a work that simply points the way to the Scriptures and allows the Word of God to speak for itself. The great goal of this study is for the student to have an encounter with God through His Word. Founded upon the conviction that Scripture is the inspired and infallible Word of God, this book has been designed in such a way that it is literally impossible for the student to advance without an open Bible before him or her. Paul Washer's previously published work, The One True God, has been massively expanded, revised, and modified--with about one hundred pages of additional material--to become the first book of his Biblical Foundations for the Christian Faith series by Media Gratiae. The Biblical Foundations for the Christian Faith Series: Book One: Knowing the Living God Book Two: Discovering the Glorious Gospel Book Three: Discerning the Plight of Man Book Four: Understanding the Discipline of Fasting Book Five: Studying the Holy Scriptures More information at mediagratiae.org

Daniel Nash : Prevailing Prince of Prayer

J. Paul Reno
Nash was an obscure pastor of no prominence except in his behind-the- scenes prayer support for Charles Finney, the great evangelist who was a leader in the Great Awakening and who has been termed "The father of Modern Revivals." During his personal ministry, Nash was rejected by his church and an illness lead him to fervent prayer after which he left the pulpit ministry to devote himself completely to prayer. Soon afterwards Nash partnered with Finney and would travel beforehand to locations where Finney planned to preach in order to pray over the locale. The accounts of his fervent prayer labors are astounding. In prayer he often exhausted his body until he was given a peace in his spirit that the prayer work was done. This book states that 80% of these converts "stood the test of time" and the author says that is connected to Nash's fervent prayer work. He compares this to Moody, who didn't have such prayer support and points out that 50% of Moody's converts lasted. He goes on to state that a well known modern evangelist said that he would be glad if 20% of his converts stood the test of time. The author uses this as a call to all of us to be engaged in fervent prayer for conversion and revival.

The Church At Prayer

Elder Aimilianos of Simonopetra
The works collected in the present volume reflect the importance which the Elder consistently attached to prayer, spirituality, community life, worship, and liturgy. The eperientally based works "On Prayer" and "The Prayer of the Holy Mountain"' which deal primarily with the Prayer of the Heart, appear first, followed by the addresses "The Divine Liturgy" and "Our Church Attendance." These are in turn followed by the more socially oriented discourses "Our Relations with Our Neighbor" and "Marriage: The Great Sacrament." Finally, this volume closes with the sermons "Spiritual Reading" amnd "The Spiritual Life", which in a simple and yet compelling manner set forth the conditions for "ascending to heaven on the wings of the Spirit."

Dig Deeper into the Gospels

Andrew Sach & Tim Hiorns
Is there really much more to it than that? Aren't the Gospels supposed to be the "easy" bits of the Bible?Using Mark as a worked example, Andrew and Tim follow 'the most important things that have ever happened in the history of the world'. They help us see "a diagnosis of the human condition more perceptive than that offered by any physician, politician, philosopher or psychiatrist". They point to a solution that touches in the same moment both the horrors of hell and the glory of heaven. We come face to face with the Jesus of the Bible and see how to follow him in a way that utterly transforms our lives. The conviction of the Dig Deeper books is that God wants us to work hard at reading the Bible in order to discover its true meaning, hence the use of 'tools' to dig and dig again. It's an interactive and enjoyable process. Indeed, the authors want to make finding Bible treasure a real possibility for everyone. And to do so with receptive hearts, listening to what the Holy Spirit is saying.

Holy Scripture: The Ground And Pillar Of Our Faith, Volume Iii: The Writings Of The Church Fathers Affirming The Reformation Principle Of Sola Scriptura

David T. King
The Roman Catholic Church teaches that the principle is illegitimate because, she claims, it is unhistorical. By this she means that sola Scriptura is a theological novelty in that it supposedly has no support in the teaching of the early Church. Roman apologists charge that the teaching on Scripture promoted by the Reformers introduced a false dichotomy between the Church and Scripture which elevated Scripture to a place of authority unheard of in the early Church. The Church of Rome insists that the early Church fathers, while fully endorsing the full inspiration of the Old and New Testaments, did not believe in sola Scriptura. This volume is a compilation of the teaching of the Church fathers on the primacy, sufficiency and ultimate authority of Scripture. It contains one of the most extensive documentations of the patristic understanding of Scripture in the English language brought together in one volume. The editors have gone to great lengths to provide the primary sources where the quotations can be found in the original works, where appropriate. The documentation provided reveals in the clearest possible terms the Church fathers’ belief in the material and formal sufficiency of Scripture. By material sufficiency we mean that all that is necessary to be believed for faith and morals is revealed in Scripture. Formal sufficiency means that all that is necessary for faith and morals is clearly revealed in Scripture, so that an individual, by the enablement of the Holy Spirit alone, can understand the essentials of salvation and the Christian life. Page after page gives eloquent testimony to the supreme authority that Scripture held in the life of the early Church and serves as a much needed corrective to Rome’s misrepresentation of the Church fathers and her denigration of the sufficiency and final authority of Scripture.

Logos Bible Study : Numbers

Bill Creasy
Bill Creasy of Logos Bible Study uses a literary, historical approach to examine and enliven the bible for modern listeners. Dr. Creasy draws on his studies, travels, and personal anecdotes to depict a vivid picture of the works of scripture. Somewhere between a sermon and a college lecture, he delivers these audiobooks with authority but a pleasantly friendly voice and a touch of fun, using contemporary references.Starting with the census of male Israelites of fighting age by Moses and Aaron at Mt. Sinai and following their journey to the Promised Land, Dr. Creasy discusses the Book of Numbers. Making the epic journey into a relatable experience, he discusses the people of Numbers and their 40 years of trialsPublisher's SummaryExodus and Leviticus span a period of 13 months in the biblical narrative; Numbers covers the remaining 39 years of the Exodus. In Numbers, Moses counts the people and organizes them by tribe, clan and family, completing a journey that spans a generation. Far from tracking aimless wanderings in the wilderness, Numbers tells the incredible story of survival against all odds, as God grooms a new generation to invade and conquer the Promised Land. This amazing book is brought to life with Dr. Bill Creasy’s vivid storytelling.©2011 Logos Bible Study (P)2011 Logos Bible Study

The Presence of God

O.P. Fr. Anselm Moynihan
Now available in the United States for the first time! This little gem of a book has moved many to respond with greater reverence and love to the hidden Guest of their souls. "Fr. Moynihan writes about being aware of God as Somebody. Somebody who loves us, lives with us and guides our actions. People still continue to read and re-read and to recommend this booklet which has endured and will continue to endure." (Austin Flannery, OP) "This booklet has the enduring quality of a classic." Exhorting One Another: The Book of Hebrews

John Piper
Biblical counsel does not direct people to esteem themselves – it directs them to esteem God, and doing this means waging war. A Sunday sermon isn’t enough; neither is a weekly small group. To persevere in this fight, we are to “exhort one another every day, as long as it is called ‘today,’ that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin” (Hebrews 3:13). Hebrews teaches us that perseverance is essential in salvation, and that it is a community project. Satisfy your soul in the ultimate Treasure so you move away from comfort and toward need; fight for the salvation of your brothers and sisters in Christ; hold fast to the faith; encourage one another.

A Treatise on the Law and Gospel

John Colquhoun
He also impresses us with the importance of knowing this relationship. Colquhoun especially excels in showing how important the law is as a believer’s rule of life without doing injury to the freeness and fullness of the gospel. By implication, he enables us to draw four practical conclusions: (1) the law shows us how to live; (2) the law as a rule of life combats both antinomianism and legalism; (3) the law shows us how to love; and 4) the law promotes true freedom.Table of Contents:1. The Law of God or the Moral Law in General2. The Law of God as Promulgated to the Israelites from Mount Sinai3. The Properties of the Moral Law4. The Rules for Understanding Aright the Ten Commandments5. The Gospel of Christ6. The Uses of the Gospel, and of the Law in Subservience to It7. The Difference between the Law and the Gospel8. The Agreement between the Law and the Gospel9. The Establishment of the Law by the Gospel10. The Believer’s Privilege of Being Dead to the Law as a Covenant of Works11. The High Obligations under Which Believers Lie12. The Nature, Necessity, and Desert of Good WorksQuote from the Author:“The law and the gospel are the principal parts of divine revelation; or rather they are the center, sum, and substance of all the other parts of it. Every passage of sacred Scripture is either law or gospel, or is capable of being referred either to the one or to the other . . . If then a man cannot distinguish aright between the law and the gospel, he cannot rightly understand so much as a single article of divine truth. If he does not have spiritual and just apprehensions of the holy law, he cannot have spiritual and transforming discoveries of the glorious gospel; and, on the other hand, if his view of the gospel is erroneous, his notions of the law cannot be right.”—John Colquhoun

Logos Bible Study: 1 Samuel

Bill Creasy
Bill Creasy of Logos Bible Study uses a literary, historical approach to examine and enliven the bible for modern listeners. Dr. Creasy draws on his studies, travels, and personal anecdotes to depict a vivid picture of the works of scripture. Somewhere between a sermon and a college lecture, he delivers these audiobooks with authority but a pleasantly friendly voice and a touch of fun, using contemporary references. In this lesson Dr. Creasy walks through the story of the Book of Samuel starting with the blessing of childless Hannah, who subsequently has a son, Samuel, through the kingships of Saul and David.Samuel is the last of the judges, and with his end approaching, the people demand a king “so we can be like all the other nations.” As God tells Samuel, “it is not you they have rejected, they have rejected me as their king.” And indeed they have. The people choose a king, Saul, of the tribe of Benjamin. Saul will rule Israel for an entire generation, but although he looks like a king, he does not have the heart of a king, and the weight of kingship crushes him.As Saul descends into madness, a young man named David begins his rise. Not only is the story of David the greatest story in the Hebrew Scriptures, it is among the greatest stories in all of world literature. I Am: A Oneness Pentecostal Theology

David S. Norris
Rejecting a triumphalistic reading of church history, he argues that the first-century church had a very specific christological confession, one very different from what the church later came to believe. Norris demonstrates how the writers of the New Testament, specifically anchored in a Jewish conception of the absolute oneness of God were able to celebrate Jesus Christ in the Incarnation. The author works to demonstrate that this christological understanding is biblical, historical, and logical.

Crossing the Line: Culture, Race, and Kingdom

Michael Burns
Early on, I predicted that it would easily be the best book ever written on culture and race from both biblical and practical perspectives... Gordon Ferguson, teacher, Dallas Church of Christ As a black man who has been a disciple for thirty-five years and served seventeen years in the full-time ministry, I just wanted to read the entire book without stopping. Everything I read addressed a concern I had but did not know how to express. I no longer have to be the voice of reason on race. Michael's book does it for me with far more palatable language and exponentially more spirituality. Tony Chukes, Denver, Colorado In this book, Michael Burns opens the doorway into dialogue and discussion of race and its impact on the culture and Kingdom of God. Issues of racism, race, and culture bring out deep passion and potential conflict in the world; and because disciples live in this world, they affect us, our mission, and our unity. Every potential problem like this, though, can be a pitfall or a platform. It can be our undoing or an amazing opportunity to put the power and wisdom of the true gospel on display. The real problems that threaten division within the body are not race or skin color as such, but history, culture, perspective, and the solutions that are typically offered by the world. Michael examines these agents of division before delving into the true answers found in God's word. The good news is that perhaps the biggest cause of internal strife and division in the early church was the issue of ethnicity and culture. That means that the New Testament Scriptures are full of principles and teaching that will propel us forward in our search to be the unified people of God that he has called us to be.

The Pearl: Seven Hymns on the Faith

Ephrem the Syrian
This edition has a linked Table of Contents and has been wonderfully formatted (searchable and interlinked) to work on your eBook reader. Ephrem the Syrian was a Syriac and a prolific Syriac-language Hymnographer and theologian of the 4th century. His works are hailed by Christians throughout the world and many denominations venerate him as a saint. He has been declared a Doctor of the Church in Roman Catholicism. He is especially beloved in the Syriac Orthodox Church.Ephrem wrote a wide variety of Hymns, poems, and sermons in verse, as well as prose biblical exegesis. These were works of practical theology for the edification of the church in troubled times. So popular were his works, that, for centuries after his death, Christian authors wrote hundreds of pseudepigraphal works in his name. Ephrem's works witness to an early form of Christianity in which western ideas take little part. He has been called the most significant of all of the fathers of the Syriac-speaking church tradition. You can purchase other religious works directly from Wyatt North Publishing.Enjoy.

The Scandal of the Incarnation: Irenaeus Against the Heresies

Irenaeus of Lyons
Born in Asia Minor in about 130 A.D., he became Bishop of Lyons and died as a martyr early in the third century. His main work, Adversus Haereses (Against the Heresies), is as relevant today as it was eighteen hundred years ago. It is a critique of Gnosticism, the 'anti-body' heresy, which, far from dying out, continues to flourish as the main threat to the Christian faith in our own day. With serenity and good humor, Irenaeus unfolds the unity of God's purpose in creation and redemption, in Old and New Testaments. The flesh and blood which Gnosticism so despised has been assumed by God in the womb of the Virgin Mary, and glorified in the Resurrection and the Eucharist. In this book, quotations from Saint Irenaeus have been arranged thematically in order to show the unity of his Christian view of the world. The texts have been selected and are introduced by the late Hans Urs von Balthasar, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest Catholic theologians of this century. They are translated by John Saward.

The Evergetinos: A Complete Text

Center for Traditionalist Orthodox Studi
In the spiritual laboratory of the Egyptian deserts, these seekers after salvation, enlightenment, and union with Christ brought into sharp focus the teachings of the Apostles and the message of Holy Writ in their daily lives and activities. The stern, the loving, “fools for Christ”—all of the exemplars of Christian Sainthood, the many inhabitants of the many mansions above, are to be found in the rich and profitable lives portrayed in this collection. Also to be found are perfect models for every modern Christian who wishes sincerely to imitate those who have walked the path towards moral and spiritual perfection. This is the first English translation of this wonderful treasury of spiritual wisdom. The Center for Traditionalist Orthodox Studies is pleased to announce that, with the publication, on July 1, 2008, of the fourteenth and last volume—the third volume of Book Four—of the first complete text in the English language of The Evergetinos, we will now issue this classical Orthodox collection of the sayings and aphorisms of the Desert Fathers (as well as other Hesychastic writings) in a four-book library set, corresponding to the original Greek publication. These four volumes will be available in an attractive paperbound and a hardbound edition, in two color printing (red and black), with Byzantine-style line drawings, and replete with the original Prologue of St. Nicodemos the Hagiorite, an historical introduction by Archbishop Chrysostomos of Etna, a Preface by Hieromonk Dr. Gorazd, Director of the Institute of Eastern Christianity at the Charles University in Prague, and footnotes and indices. Each volume will be approximately 400 pages in length. This monumental Patristic translation, twenty years in preparation, is the most important publication yet undertaken by the Center for Traditionalist Orthodox Studies. The Evergetinos, compiled by St. Makarios of Corinth and first published by St. Nicodemos in 1783, is a companion volume of The Philokalia—indeed a precursor, of sorts, to that work—, and together with it an essential and classical spiritual guide for Orthodox Christians seeking the inner life of spiritual transformation. The project, a collaborative effort, was initiated by Archbishop Chrysostomos while he was a Visiting Scholar at Oxford University in 1988 and continued to completion under his direction and editorship, and that of Hieromonk Patapios, with the collaboration of Bishop Ambrose of Methone, Bishop Auxentios of Photike, Monk Chrysostomos, Dr. Constantine Kokenes, Nun Lydia, Professor John V. Petropoulos, the late Professor John V. Rexine, and Reverend Gregory Telepneff.
