Resilient Web Design

Jeremy Keith
This is not a handbook. It’s more like a history book.Marshall McLuhan once said:We look at the present through a rear‐view mirror. We march backwards into the future. But in the world of web design, we are mostly preoccupied with the here and now. When we think beyond our present moment, it is usually to contemplate the future—to imagine the devices, features, and interfaces that don’t yet exist. We don’t have time to look back upon our past, and yet the history of web design is filled with interesting ideas. The World Wide Web has been around for long enough now that we can begin to evaluate the twists and turns of its evolution. I wrote this book to highlight some of the approaches to web design that have proven to be resilient. I didn’t do this purely out of historical interest (although I am fascinated by the already rich history of our young industry). In learning from the past, I believe we can better prepare for the future. You won’t find any code in here to help you build better websites. But you will find ideas and approaches. Ideas are more resilient than code. I’ve tried to combine the most resilient ideas from the history of web design into an approach for building the websites of the future.I hope you will join me in building a web that lasts; a web that’s resilient.

Sinan: the Architect and His Works

Reha Günay
He lived at a time when the Empire was at its zenith both in terms of political power and artistic production.Indeed, Sinan's achievements throughout the Empire and especially in Istanbul have never been equaled. Most of the buildings designed by Sinan, and certainly his most outstanding ones, were built in Istanbul. These works seem to have been developed during an architectural contest, so rich are they in novel ideas and innovations. They were also most adequately topographically located, greatly contributing to the city's unique skyline. With such a range of highly original examples, Istanbul was practically turned into an open-air museum.

Innovating for People: Human-Centered Design Planning Cards

LUMA Institute
These cards equip people in various lines of work to become more innovative. They enable practical planning in order to bring new and lasting value into the world. The key ingredient to successful innovation is the everyday practice of Human-Centered Design: the discipline of developing solutions in the service of people. Every story of a good innovation--whether it's a new product, a new service, a new business model or a new form of governance-- begins and ends with people. It starts with careful discernment of human needs, and concludes with solutions that meet or exceed personal expectations. This deck of cards is an essential resource for innovation. It's a set of planning cards describing thirty-six methods of Human-Centered Design, organized by way of three key design skills: - Looking: Methods for observing human experience - Understanding: Methods for analyzing challenges and opportunities - Making: Methods for envisioning future possibilities Each featured method includes a brief description, a pictorial example and a quick guide with helpful hints for initial application. The full collection of methods is small enough to digest quickly, yet large enough to address myriad challenges. This deck does not prescribe a formulaic innovation process. Rather, it introduces a versatile set of methods for practicing Human-Centered Design as a daily discipline in order to be more innovative and drive sustainable growth. Mexican Color/Color Mexicano

Poniatowska

It considers architecture as a form of artificial life. This approach has formed the basis for the author's teaching programme for AA Diploma Unit II.This publication records the progress of the unit and their preoccupation with the relationship of computers to architecture. Their approach explores the integration of machine intelligence with built form. The author considers architectural concepts which describe a genetic language leading to a code script of instructions for generating form. Design Of Weldments

Omer W. Blodgett
Over the 1950s and 1960s, recreational development converted small, rural communities into bustling "seasonal cities": urbanized pockets of development near natural amenities characterized by massive development projects, seasonal fluctuations in population, and recreational tourism as a foundation of the local economy. A new manifestation of capitalist pressures in the countryside, seasonal cities had dramatic environmental, social, and fiscal consequences for rural communities.;This study demonstrates that seasonal cities were important sites of environmental contestation, exerting a lasting influence on environmental politics and land use governance. Through analyses of seasonal cities in the Lake Tahoe Basin of California and Nevada, the Yampa Valley of Colorado, and the Green Mountains of Vermont, it shows that a diverse array of rural residents sought to safeguard public amenities--scenic beauty, wildlife habitat, clean water, open spaces, and solvent municipal services--from the development patterns that had so altered suburban areas. Challenging long-standing rural values, they fought for land use planning and government regulation of private land use. Their defense of the public good resulted in unprecedented state-level oversight of land use decisions.;The passage of state land use acts in the early 1970s marked a key epoch in environmental politics. Demonstrating an important shift in land use governance and a unique moment in America's ongoing relationship with federalism, many citizens held that state-level governance would better protect public amenities than local decision-making. The adoption of state land use acts further reflected a broad challenge to deeply-entrenched national values: the emphasis on economic growth as an unequivocal boon to the nation and the view of private property rights as sacrosanct. Despite the significance of state land use acts, their impact was muted by the changing economic and political climate. The weakening of most state land use acts over the late 1970s heralded the devolution of environmental controls and the strong reassertion of private property rights that occurred in late twentieth century environmental politics.

A must-have for lovers of late-twentieth century furniture and "interior landscape." Dimension: 9 x 12 inches, over 500 color reproductions, CD-ROM included.

Twentieth Century Houses: By Frank Lloyd Wright, Charles And Ray Eames And Alvar Aalto

Robert McCarter
Fallingwater is one of Wright's most inventive houses, showing him to be an architect of immense creativity and daring. Aalto drew on a deep understanding of vernacular building, classicism and modernism, and on a love of natural materials, to create the humane, rich and lyrical Villa Mairea. Charles and Ray Eames' own house was assembled entirely from standardized industrial components composed with a sensitive irregularity. Together, these buildings represent the responses of some of the world's most respected architects to the problems of residential design.

Spoon

Phaidon Press
Spoon covers a vast spectrum of styles, media and work, from kitchen utensils, tools and lighting to furniture, high-tech products and cars. Essentially an exhibition in a book, 10 curators have each selected the work of 10 designers, whom they consider to have emerged internationally and broken new ground in the last five years. Each designer (arranged A-Z) is featured over two double-page spreads, which are extensively illustrated with sketches, drawings, models and photographs. Alongside numerous examples of their work, a short explanatory text by the selecting curator, extended captions and biographical information on the designer are provided. Each curator has also chosen a design 'classic' that illustrates the concept of 'good design'. Spoon takes its place in a series of surveys identifying 100 of the most interesting, cutting-edge practitioners of key art forms. Earlier surveys include cream and Fresh Cream for contemporary art, 10x10 for architecture and BLINK for photography.

Lost masterpieces : Joseph Paxton: Crystal Palace ; Ferdinand Dutert: Palais des Machines ; McKim, Mead and White: Pennsylvania Station

These structures -- with their innovative approaches to design and the use of new technology -- paved the way for the modern architectural movement, but sadly no longer survive. Their destruction was irreparable and in stark contrast to the self-confidence of the original climate in which they were designed.

Alexis: The Memoirs Of The Baron De Redé

Hugo Vickers
He wrote of his traumatic childhood, his courageous lone voyage to the United States, and how he caught the eye and heart of one of Europe's most enigmatic figures Arturo Lopez-Willshaw. Joining Lopez in Paris after the war, he took on the restoration of the Hotel Lambert. With Arturo, and indeed with his wife Patricia, he attended or was host to some of the great balls of the age. Alexis de Redé was never far from the epicentre of high society, and some of the great artistic and social figures of the twentieth century played cameo roles in his life. His friendships were many, and remarkably diverse, including Salvador Dalí, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Yves Saint Laurent, Brigitte Bardot, Rudolf Nureyev, Maria Callas, and Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. In these sparkling memoirs, profusely illustrated with images from his own collection, he talked of his close friendship with Arturo, and after his death with the legendary queen of Paris society, Marie-Hélène de Rothschild. A man of exceptional elegance and style, he lived a life in which aesthetic perfection was his aim and his ideal. He will be remembered as the man who restored the Hotel Lambert where he lived from 1949 until his death on 9 July 2004 at the age of 82. He hosted the splendid Oriental Ball at the Lambert in 1969 and was the last survivor of a world in which magnificent costume balls were given and the beau monde of the world invited. An exquisite host, whose lunches, dinners and parties were legendary, he was also an astute businessman.
