The Search: How Google and Its Rivals Rewrote the Rules of Business and Transformed Our Culture
John Battelle - 2005
In its sweeping survey of the history of Internet search technologies, its gossip about and analysis of Google, and its speculation on the larger cultural implications of a Web-connected world, it will likely receive attention from a variety of businesspeople, technology futurists, journalists, and interested observers of mid-2000s zeitgeist. This ambitious book comes with a strong pedigree. Author John Battelle was a founder of The Industry Standard and then one of the original editors of Wired, two magazines which helped shape our early perceptions of the wild world of the Internet. Battelle clearly drew from his experience and contacts in writing The Search. In addition to the sure-handed historical perspective and easy familiarity with such dot-com stalwarts as AltaVista, Lycos, and Excite, he speckles his narrative with conversational asides from a cast of fascinating characters, such Google's founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin; Yahoo's, Jerry Yang and David Filo; key executives at Microsoft and different VC firms on the famed Sandhill road; and numerous other insiders, particularly at the company which currently sits atop the search world, Google. The Search is not exactly the corporate history of Google. At the book's outset, Battelle specifically indicates his desire to understand what he calls the cultural anthropology of search, and to analyze search engines' current role as the "database of our intentions"--the repository of humanity's curiosity, exploration, and expressed desires. Interesting though that beginning is, though, Battelle's story really picks up speed when he starts dishing inside scoop on the darling business story of the decade, Google. To Battelle's credit, though, he doesn't stop just with historical retrospective: the final part of his book focuses on the potential future directions of Google and its products' development. In what Battelle himself acknowledges might just be a "digital fantasy train", he describes the possibility that Google will become the centralizing platform for our entire lives and quotes one early employee on the weightiness of Google's potential impact: "Sometimes I feel like I am on a bridge, twenty thousand feet up in the air. If I look down I'm afraid I'll fall. I don't feel like I can think about all the implications." Some will shrug at such words; after all, similar hype has accompanied other technologies and other companies before. Many others, though, will search Battelle's story for meaning--and fast. --Peter Han

Overlap: Start a Business While Working a Full-Time Job
Sean McCabe - 2017
You use the stability of your day job to provide a financial foundation for building your own business on the side. When Sean McCabe started practicing hand lettering, he never dreamed he’d make over $500,000 from the craft. He always thought it’d be a hobby. But he learned that there are three specific ways to make money from any niche pursuit.Sean codifies and breaks down these three methods of making money in what he calls The Trifecta:• Client Work• Products• TeachingNo matter what you want to do, you can grow a thriving business using these three methods of generating revenue. But where you’ll get stuck is trying to find the time, motivation, and focus to do the work.• How do you get your family or spouse on board when they’re scared?• What if you come home from your day job feeling exhausted and ready to collapse?• What if you have many passions and you’re not sure which to focus on?Overlap will help you find your passion, develop your skills, get out of scarcity, and create the life you want. The results will not come overnight, but this book will help you get unstuck and give you a clear idea of exactly what to do next.Don’t Quit Your Day JobThere’s a notion that if you’re “really serious” you’ll quit your day job and give your passion a chance. That works for some people, but so does the lottery. I don’t think it’s a winning strategy. You want something more sensible—something that doesn’t involve crazy amounts of risk (and the high likelihood you’ll kill your passion for good if things don’t pan out).We all know people who quit their job to pursue their passion only to end up hating what they do.Or worse: they had to go back to the day job and, because they felt like a failure, they never got up the courage to try again. You’re here because you want something more practical: a systematic plan and logical steps for making a living from what you love.Overlap is for you. When you overlap, you don’t immediately quit your day job. You use the day job as a financial foundation to support your pursuit of something else. This does something incredible.Rather than feel immediate financial pressure, you are free to explore, do, and try. This exploratory phase is critical. It prevents burnout and helps you avoid killing your passion, which often happens when you’re desperate for money.Overlap is where you start a business while working a full time job.• This is the book you’ll wish you had years ago.• This is the book that finally gives you clarity.• This is the book you can give to your kids and not worry about their future. This is a sensible, practical, down to earth guide to making a living doing what you love, creating financial freedom for yourself, and getting your family on board.I’ve been working on this book for years.I’ve written the book, re-written it, and revised it based on hundreds of personal conversations I’ve had with people who want something more than the status quo. What I discovered is this:Most Books Are Addressing the Wrong ProblemsI found that the things holding you back aren’t necessarily lack of business knowledge, finance, or anything like that.In my conversations, I learned it’s these things that are holding you back:• Lack of support from your family.• Trouble finding motivation.• Not enough time.• Difficulty focusing.• Unsure of the right thing to pursue.• Feeling overwhelmed with the possibilities.I reverse engineered Overlap to solve every single one of these struggles. If you believe you were meant for something more, if you believe you can make it, if you believe you were destined for greatness…Overlap will help you get there.

The Handmade Entrepreneur-How to Sell on Etsy, or Anywhere Else: Easy Steps for Building a Real Business Around Your Crafts
Dani Marie - 2015
What if you could start your day out with an excited shout instead of a frustrated sigh? Unfortunately, selling handmade goods online is no longer as simple as throwing together a product listing and waiting for sales to roll in. There are now millions of people with handmade products and they are all eager to build a sustainable income. The Handmade Entrepreneur uses precise methods based on proven marketing techniques to set you above the competition. It teaches you how to create a genuine business you can count on rather than a bundle of shop pages and social media accounts built on a foundation of guesswork. What You Can Expect to Learn from This Book: • How to take DIY pictures that get clicks and sales • How to set up a shop that turns visitors into buyers in under two seconds • How to price your items • How to write titles and descriptions • How to brand your business with DIY techniques • How to rank your pages • How to find targeted audiences • How to build up your list of followers • Where to promote your listings • How to sell without selling • How to form relationships with people who can send you extra sales • How to start a "buzz" about your products • Which tools to incorporate into your business The goal of this book is to free you from having to rely on any third-party website for your sales. Yes, you can take advantage of platforms like Etsy, and you should, but websites come and go, and if all your sales come only from that website, you run into trouble every time there are algorithm changes, a saturation of sellers, or cheaper products to compete with. You are trying to generate sales, which means that you are trying to run a business, which in-turn means that you need a real business plan. Brick and motor stores don't just buy a bunch of goods, throw them in a building, and hope people will come. They plan, study their target market, pick a perfect store location, and prepare to market themselves. Just because you sell online does not mean that you can skip all of these steps. You have billions of products to compete with online and a crowd of shoppers who have an overwhelming number of options before them. You must prepare your storefront, get your products ready, know your audience, and then know how to market to them. Optimizing Your Shop for Sales Dani starts out showing you how to prepare your products with photos that attract clicks and sales. It doesn't just tell you how to do it, though. It SHOWS you. Thanks to the help of many carefully selected Etsy sellers, there are many example photos for each point. In addition to this, the author only shows you DIY photos to prove that you can do it all on your own. Next, Dani discusses how to optimize your shop. She goes through every aspect such as banners, profiles, descriptions, tags, and titles. You will learn how to optimize your pages so that people stay there instead of leaving instantly. This can be done by creating an inviting environment with images and content that buyers can skim through in under two seconds. If buyers can determine that your page is worth staying on in less than two seconds, you have won the battle. Finding Targeted Audiences and Marketing The issue with selling online is finding people who would be interested in your products.

Emotional Intelligence Training: A Practical Guide to Making Friends with Your Emotions and Raising Your EQ (Positive Psychology Coaching Series Book 8)
Ian Tuhovsky - 2015
Or, more importantly: do you believe you'd be healthier and happier if everyone who you live with had the strategies to regulate their emotions? ...right? The truth is not too many people actually realize what EQ is really all about and what causes its popularity to grow constantly. Scientific research conducted by many American and European Universities prove that the ‘common’ intelligence responses account for only less than 20% of our life achievements and successes, while the other more than 80% depends on the emotional intelligence. To put it roughly: either you are emotionally intelligent, or you’re doomed to mediocrity, at best. As opposed to the popular image, emotionally intelligent people are not the ones who react impulsively and spontaneously, or who act lively and fiery in all types of social environments. Emotionally intelligent people are open to new experiences, can show feelings adequate to the situation, either good or bad, and find it easy to socialize with other people and establish new contacts. They handle stress well, say ‘no’ easily, realistically assess the achievements of themselves or others, and are not afraid of constructive criticism and taking calculated risks. They are the people of success. Unfortunately, this perfect model of an emotionally intelligent person is extremely rare in our modern times. Sadly nowadays, the amount of emotional problems in the world is increasing at an alarming rate. We are getting richer, but less and less happy. Depression, suicide, relationship breakdowns, loneliness of choice, fear of closeness, addictions - this is the clear evidence we are getting increasingly worse when it comes to dealing with our emotions. Emotional Intelligence is a SKILL, and can be learned through constant practice and training, just like riding a bike or swimming! This book is stuffed with lots of effective exercises, helpful info and practical ideas. Every chapter covers different areas of emotional intelligence and shows you, step by step, what exactly you can do to develop your EQ and become the better version of yourself. I will show you how freeing yourself from the domination of the left-sided brain thinking can contribute to your inner transformation – the emotional revolution that will help you redefine who you are and what you really want from life. In This Book I'll Show You: -What Is Emotional Intelligence and What Does EQ Consist Of? -How to Observe and Express your Emotions -How to Release Negative Emotions and Empower the Positive Ones -How To Deal With Your Internal Dialogues -How To Deal With The Past -How to Forgive Yourself and How to Forgive Others -How to Free Yourself from Other People’s Opinions and Judgments -What Are "Submodalities" and How Exactly You Can Use Them to Empower Yourself and Get Rid of Stress -The Nine Things You Need to Stop Doing to Yourself -How to Examine Your Thoughts -Internal Conflicts Troubleshooting Technique -The Lost A
