Reset: Living a Grace-Paced Life in a Burnout Culture

David P. Murray - 2017

In this hopeful book, experienced pastor and counselor David Murray shares stories from his own life and the lives of friends, offering gospel-centered advice for avoiding, assessing, and recovering from burnout. The Last Arrow: Save Nothing for the Next Life

Erwin Raphael McManus - 2017
All of those will begin to blur together into a singular memory called life. What will give someone solace or haunt them until their final breath is what they could have done but did not, who they could have been but never became, the life they could have lived that never came to life. This book is a call and much needed push towards that "most courageous life." By examining the account of Elisha and the King of Israel, McManus demonstrates why it is best to follow God into battle with an empty quiver. He shows the reader why leaving everything on the battle field feels risky but yields the deepest sense of fulfillment.

The Road Less Stupid: Advice from the Chairman of the Board

Keith J. Cunningham - 2017
Anyone who finds it easy is stupid.” —Charlie Munger, Vice Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway Smart people do dumb things. Here’s the proof: How much money would you have right now if I gave you the ability to unwind any financial decision you have ever made? It turns out that the key to getting rich (and staying that way) is to avoid doing stupid things. The vast majority of dumb tax in both our lives is a direct result of three things: 1. Generalizations (which kill clarity), 2. Obsessing about Oz (instead of the yellow brick road) and 3. Faulty assumptions (ignoring risk). Here it is on a bumper sticker: Operators react and sweat. Owners think and plan. It all hinges on Thinking Time.

Permission to Screw Up: How I Learned to Lead by Doing (Almost) Everything Wrong

Kristen Hadeed - 2017
This is the story of how Kristen Hadeed built Student Maid, a cleaning company where people are happy, loyal, productive, and empowered, even while they’re mopping floors and scrubbing toilets. It’s the story of how she went from being an almost comically inept leader to a sought-after CEO who teaches others how to lead.   Hadeed unintentionally launched Student Maid while attending college ten years ago. Since then, Student Maid has employed hundreds of students and is widely recognized for its industry-leading retention rate and its culture of trust and accountability. But Kristen and her company were no overnight sensation. In fact, they were almost nothing at all. Along the way, Kristen got it wrong almost as often as she got it right. Giving out hugs instead of feedback, fixing errors instead of enforcing accountability, and hosting parties instead of cultivating meaningful relationships were just a few of her many mistakes. But Kristen’s willingness to admit and learn from those mistakes helped her give her people the chance to learn from their own screwups too. Permission to Screw Up dismisses the idea that leaders and organizations should try to be perfect. It encourages people of all ages to go for it and learn to lead by acting, rather than waiting or thinking. Through a brutally honest and often hilarious account of her own struggles, Kristen encourages us to embrace our failures and proves that we’ll be better leaders when we do.

No Limits: Blow the CAP Off Your Capacity

John C. Maxwell - 2017
Maxwell's latest book will enhance the lives of leaders, professionals, and anyone who wants to achieve success and personal growth. We often treat the word capacity as if it were a natural law of limitation. Unfortunately, most of us are much more comfortable defining what we perceive as off limits rather than what's really possible. Could it be that many of us have failed to expand our potential because we have allowed what we perceive as capacity to define us? What if our limits are not really our limits? In his newest book, John Maxwell identifies 17 core capacities. Some of these are abilities we all already possess, such as energy, creativity and leadership. Others are aspects of our lives controlled by our choices, like our attitudes, character, and intentionality. Maxwell examines each of these capacities, and provides clear and actionable advice on how you can increase your potential in each. He will guide you on how to identify, grow, and apply your critical capacities. Once you've blown the "cap" off your capacities, you'll find yourself more successful -- and fulfilled -- in your daily life.

The Power of Moments: Why Certain Experiences Have Extraordinary Impact

Chip Heath - 2017
If we embrace these elements, we can conjure more moments that matter. What if a teacher could design a lesson that he knew his students would remember twenty years later? What if a manager knew how to create an experience that would delight customers? What if you had a better sense of how to create memories that matter for your children? This book delves into some fascinating mysteries of experience: Why we tend to remember the best or worst moment of an experience, as well as the last moment, and forget the rest. Why “we feel most comfortable when things are certain, but we feel most alive when they’re not.” And why our most cherished memories are clustered into a brief period during our youth. Readers discover how brief experiences can change lives, such as the experiment in which two strangers meet in a room, and forty-five minutes later, they leave as best friends. (What happens in that time?) Or the tale of the world’s youngest female billionaire, who credits her resilience to something her father asked the family at the dinner table. (What was that simple question?) Many of the defining moments in our lives are the result of accident or luck—but why would we leave our most meaningful, memorable moments to chance when we can create them? The Power of Moments shows us how to be the author of richer experiences.

Immeasurable: Reflections on the Soul of Ministry in the Age of Church, Inc.

Skye Jethani - 2017
I’ll never forget what one student said…‘My denomination wants me to have an M.Div., but once they see I can grow a big church, I don't think they'll make me finish the program.’”The priorities of this future pastor were startling, but he’s not alone in them.In the years since that class, author and minister Skye Jethani has seen more and more pastors swallowed by the celebrity syndrome. Not long ago, ministers were among the most trusted and admired people in our culture. But not anymore. A 2013 study from Gallop revealed that Americans’ admiration for clergy has reached an all-time low. That, taken with reduced trust of institutional religion overall, makes it easy to see why ministers feel insecure about their calling. In response to this trend, some pastors have looked to emulate those who are praised by the culture—business leaders, entertainers, and social activists. This has led to a new understanding of what a minister should be. We’ve turned away from viewing our pastors as shepherds, and now expect them to be celebrities. Immeasurable will help ministers recognize the cultural forces shaping their view of the calling, and then reimagine what faithful church leaders can look like in the twenty-first century. Through short essays and reflections on the pastor’s soul and skills, this book will help prospective pastors explore their calling to ministry, and it will help veteran pastors reframe their vision for the work.Drawing on cultural dynamics, personal stories, and his own experience working in a church and with church leaders, Skye Jethani will address matters like ambition, anger, community, consumerism, fame, health, justice, platform, preaching, rest, simplicity, success, vision, and more. There are endless resources to help pastors do the practical work of ministry, but there are far fewer that speak to the pastor’s soul and spirit. Immeasurable provides affirmation and encouragement for church leaders faithfully serving God. It commends the true work of ministry—shepherding, teaching, encouraging—while redefining what we mean by success in ministry. It’s a book church leaders can return to again and again for insight and inspiration.

A Failure of Nerve: Leadership in the Age of the Quick Fix, Revised Edition

Edwin H Friedman - 2017
His understandings about our regressed, “seatbelt society,” oriented toward safety rather than adventure, help explain the sabotage that leaders constantly face today. Suspicious of the “quick fixes” and instant solutions that sweep through our culture only to give way to the next fad, he argued for strength and selfdifferentiationas the marks of true leadership. His formula for success is more maturity, not more data; stamina, not technique; and personal responsibility, not empathy.A Failure of Nerve was unfinished at the time of Friedman’s death and originally publishedin a limited edition. This new edition cleans up some oversights in the original and bringshis life-changing insights and challenges to a new generation of readers.“Reading this book is like discovering an unpublished Beethoven sonata or a missing play of Shakespeare. Ed Friedman was one of our most brilliant, original, and provocative thinkers across the fields of therapy, ministry, and organizational leadership.”—Professor William J. Doherty, Director, Marriage and Family Therapy Program, University of Minnesota

With openness and candor he delivers insights about his methods and passes along lessons that can be used by leaders in any field. Cook also shares behind-the-scenes anecdotes about Nebraska volleyball moments and players—and how he coaches and teaches his players about life beyond the court.

Who Do We Choose to Be?: Facing Reality, Claiming Leadership, Restoring Sanity

Margaret J. Wheatley - 2017
I know it is possible to experience grace and joy in the midst of tragedy and loss. I know it is possible to create islands of sanity in the midst of wildly disruptive seas. Swing : Finding the Courage to Become

Dan Hawkins - 2017

Asking Questions The Sandler Way

Antonio Garrido - 2017
When does the sales process really begin? Some say that sales starts at the very first “hello.” Everything before that first critical opening word, these people say, is marketing; everything after that is sales. Others say that the real work of sales doesn’t begin till the prospect first says, “No.” “Otherwise,” they insist, “it’s just order-taking.” Antonio Garrido’s ASKING QUESTIONS THE SANDLER WAY rejects both of those answers. It holds that selling begins when you start asking good questions. Most salespeople have a fairly blunt and unsophisticated sales strategy that doesn’t rely all that much on thoughtful questioning. This book is about asking the right questions, so that both the seller and the buyer discover the right solution as efficiently and as effectively as possible—even if they discover that the right solution right now is for the prospect to buy from the competition. Although that may be an unconventional selling standard, it’s a powerful and extremely effective one. This book is about not looking, sounding, or thinking like the average salesperson. It’s about keeping barriers down and communication lines open. It’s about getting to the right solution, faster, more efficiently, and with less stress. It’s about asking the right questions, in the right way, at the right time, for the right reason. It’s about asking questions the Sandler way.

The Character of the Christian

Tim Challies - 2017
Carson has pointed out that the list of qualifications for elders is “remarkable for being unremarkable.” Why? Because these traits are repeated elsewhere as qualities that ought to characterize all believers. --- Are you growing in godliness? How would you even know? A good place to begin is understanding and imitating the character qualifications the Bible lays out for elders. While elders are meant to exemplify these traits, all Christians are to display them. And, with just one exception, each of them is related to character. Join me as I explore the Bible to consider how we can better exemplify the highest Christian virtues. As we consider the character of the Christian, we will spur one another on to love, good works, and Christlikeness. –Tim Challies

Inspired: Pursuit of Progress

Kelly Clark - 2017
For much of my young life and throughout most of my career, I believed that success would fulfill me. Most people do. I found myself driven for more- more medals, more exposure, more sponsors, and more people praising me for my performance. I realized that somewhere in the midst of successes and failures, accolades and achievements I lost myself. As I took inventory of all of it, I discovered that success did not equal fulfillment and if I didn't start living from a healthy place, my influence would end when my career did.It is easy to look at the lives of professional athletes through the lens of fame. This lens filters out the hard stuff and paints a picture of a life without process- But, life is all about process. In this book, I set out to define what motivates me while helping others discover what might be motivating them. I help people change the "rose-colored" lens that leaves them apathetic and entitled, to a lens that brings the whole picture into focus. This book begins at the pinnacle moment in my career thus far- The Salt Lake City Olympic Games. From there, I journey back to the plastic snowboard my dad bought me when I was seven years old and describe the highs and lows that have marked my career. As the book develops, I identify obstacles, struggles, and hindrances to success, while providing strategies to overcome them. I build in foundations of belief, hard work, and consistency, all built around the one thing that every person must discover no matter what they do- WHY?

Paul's Vision for the Deacons: Assisting the Elders with the Care of God's Church

Alexander Strauch - 2017
What does Scripture actually teach about deacons and their role in the church? Views range from deacons being the board of directors, to the church building maintenance crew. My intention in writing this book is to encourage my deacon friends and fellow church leaders to think more critically about what they are saying, what they are doing, and what Scripture actually teaches about deacons. Whatever your view of deacons may be, this study will help you examine in detail the biblical fact on deacons, allowing those facts to guide your thinking. This book offers the opportunity to build broader agreement among our Bible-believing churches as to what deacons do. Known for his deep love for the church and for his careful Bible exegesis, Strauch's new study cannot be ignored by churches that are committed to following a biblical church polity. This is not simply a revision of Strauch's popular book, "The New Testament Deacon: Minister of Mercy." It is a completely new study with a fresh perspective.

How Innovation Really Works: Using the Trillion-Dollar R&D Fix to Drive Growth

Anne Marie Knott - 2017
There s a reason for that. If you re like 95% of firms, you aren t investing right amount, and the productivity of your R&D has fallen dramatically over the past several years. How is this possible? You read all the innovation articles, and hire the top consultants. The problem is no one (including the authors and consultants) know if their prescriptions are valid, because there aren t good measures of R&D to test them.Using a new measure, called Research Quotient (RQ), professor Anne Marie Knott tests many of the most popular innovation prescriptions using proprietary data from National Science Foundation (NSF) surveys of company R&D practices. The results are startling. Many of the most popular prescriptions don t work. Not only do they fail to improve innovation, in many cases they actually make firms worse! Thus the popular prescriptions are actually contributing to the decline in firm innovativeness. RQ changes that by offering a Sabremetrics for R&D . Just as Sabremetrics improved the productivity of baseball teams, the hope for RQ is it will reverse the decline in companies R&D productivity. How Innovation Really Works will show you how. It provides actionable information to increase companies market value in the short run through wiser R&D investment and to increase it over the long run through better R&D practices. While this prospect should be promising to managers and shareholders, it has even broader implications. Because R&D productivity drives economic growth, reversing the decline in firm innovativeness has the potential to restore economic growth as well."

The Intentional Legacy

David McAlvany - 2017
It is a problem that troubles wealth managers, social theorists, and, of course, parents. Solving the problem requires intentionality the process of careful thought and preparation concerning the most critical details that will shape your family and its future. To be intentional is to decide that you will be self-conscious about the way you live your life and shape the legacy you hope to bequeath to the next generations. In The Intentional Legacy, David McAlvany brings a fresh perspective to this old subject. Drawing from more than fifty years of experience in a multigenerational wealth management firm, as well as his own personal failures and successes, David presents a strategy for reverse engineering your life. Most importantly, he presents an redemptive ethic for family prosperity based on love, forgiveness, and non-contingent relationships.

What Now, Lieutenant?: Leadership Forged from Events in Vietnam, Desert Storm and Beyond

Richard Neal - 2017
For the men who fought, bled and died in them they are not small--those little pieces of war--and the personal aftermath and their effect is beyond measure. One such battle pitted a North Vietnamese Army (NVA) battalion of 700+ men against the men of Company I, Third Battalion, Ninth Marines, Third Marine Division. Of the seven officers in the field at the beginning, only three walked out. I was one of them. I was 24 years old, and this was my first significant combat experience (and surprisingly, what happened--what I was called upon to do, was something I never imagined. What came afterward defined me for the rest of my life). The fighting lasted six hours, and toward the end, we were almost out of ammunition. Those few hours changed forever the lives of the survivors, including me, and the next of kin of the men we lost. That battle was the crucial event in my life; an ultimate What Now, Lieutenant? moment that taught me so much that came into play in other such moments in my future. True, they would not be as traumatic as what I experienced as a lieutenant, but they were moments that whether I was a lieutenant, major or general, each forced me to call upon my experience, knowledge, training and common sense to respond appropriately. That phrase... that question with all it entails and how one responds when it's asked of them... seemed to fit best as a title for what you're reading now. Seeing that question in the eyes of the men on Hill 70 that day is how I learned a most valuable lesson about leadership over the course of a bloody day in Vietnam, now more than 49 years ago. Everything that happened to me after that day is now seen through that prism. --Butch Neal

Eldership Development: From Application to Affirmation (Backstage Pastors-Bringing Vision Into Reality Book 2)

Phil Taylor - 2017
They do an excellent job unpacking the pertinent scriptures and theology to explain both why we need elders and what they should look like, act like, smell like, etc. once we have them. This is not one of those books. Rather, "Eldership Development-From Application to Affirmation" seeks to show you the actual process that one church uses to develop their elders over a two year period. Think of it like a case-study. You'll see the prerequisites and the application that potential elders fill out, and even the questions asked during the interviews. You'll get an in-depth look at the two year process, all the way to the final moment when you affirm the new elder on stage in a gathering. Along the way, the author stops to explain from experience why he made the decisions he made on everything from book assignments to awkward questions in an application. After you've read the books that tell you why you need church elders and what the Bible teaches, consult this book to build your own Eldership Development program at your local church. This field tested guide is meant to save you time and energy as you train up your church elders so that you can get on with the work of pastoring well. 7 Leadership Lessons of D-Day: Lessons from the Longest Day—June 6, 1944

John Antal - 2017
The task ahead of the paratroopers who jumped over Normandy and the soldiers who waded ashore onto the beaches, all under fire, was colossal. In such circumstances good leadership can be the defining factor in victory or defeat. This book is about the extraordinary leadership of seven men who led American soldiers on D-Day and the days that followed. Some of them, like Eisenhower, Theodore Roosevelt Jr, and Lieutenant Dick Winters, are well known while others are barely a footnote in the history books. All of them made a dramatic difference during Operation Overlord. All understood that they had a mission to accomplish and that if they failed to lead that mission would fail and more men would die. When things did not go as planned, they took action, adapted and overcame – they were leaders. Leadership was the only ingredient that would get them through the storm of death surrounding them and their men. This book is not a full history of D-Day, nor does it cover the heroic leadership shown by men in the armies of the Allies or members of the French Resistance who also participated in the Normandy assault and battles for the lodgment areas. It is, however, a primer on how you can lead today, no matter what your occupation or role in life, by learning from the leadership of these seven.A critical task for every leader is to understand what leadership is. Socrates once said that you cannot understand something unless you can first define it in your own words. This book provides the reader with a means to define leadership by telling seven dramatic, immersive and memorable stories that the reader will never forget.

Is there anything that is more important than knowing about hermeneutics, homiletics, theology, exegesis, and everything else you have likely learned in seminary and church ministry so far? Yes, there is. How well do you know yourself? You need to build your ministry career on the right foundation of an objective understanding of self. If you don't comprehend your strengths and weaknesses, then you won't be fully prepared to enter the crucible of ministry. Serving as a pastor is one of the toughest calls there is. But it can also be one of the most fulfilling and rewarding, especially if you have taken the time to examine both your gifts and vulnerabilities. Marcus Tomlinson - 2017
I have, many times. Perhaps you’re on your way to becoming a manager yourself, in which case you might be asking: “What the heck am I getting myself into?!”. Of course, if you’re already a manager, chances are you’ve asked yourself at least once: “What the heck am I doing wrong?!”. No matter how you put it, the question on all of our minds at some point has been: “What should the manager be doing?”, and the only good way to answer that question, is to first answer the elusive: “What do great engineers expect from their managers?”. Which brings us to the topic of this book.

The Work of Management: A Daily Path to Sustainable Improvement

Jim Lancaster - 2017
It's a close-up, candid look at his personal transformation as a leader. It's also a practical, in-depth, business case study of Lantech's lean transformation, relapse, and comeback that American manufacturing - and other industries - can use to profitably transform themselves. In his engaging story, Lancaster reveals: Why Lantech, a stellar lean performer for a decade, struggled over time (like many other companies) to sustain gains and improve financial performance. Why 60 to 90 minutes of daily frontline management activities are a CEO's most important minutes of the day for sustaining and growing their business. 8 steps executives can take to lead experiments to create a bullet-proof, real-time daily management system without expensive consultants. Why daily management requires a major shift in managers' mindsets and behaviors from giving orders and judging individuals on performance to asking questions and enabling good work by people at lower levels so metrics are routinely met. How daily management and sustainable continuous improvement produces dramatic positive effects on the bottom line. What happens in daily huddles where team members review how well they are sustaining gains and staying on track. How to practice true lean leadership in which "bosses" truly act like coaches -- not solving problems for people but asking them what they can to do help. How Lantech ties together all facets of the company in an integrated way (from sales to production). Why it deeply invests in the lean training and practice of every single employee every day.
