Peace Is Every Step: The Path of Mindfulness in Everyday Life

Thich Nhat Hanh - 1990
World-renowned Zen master, spiritual leader, and author Thich Nhat Hanh shows us how to make positive use of the very situations that usually pressure and antagonize us. For him a ringing telephone can be a signal to call us back to our true selves. Dirty dishes, red lights, and traffic jams are spiritual friends on the path to "mindfulness"—the process of keeping our consciousness alive to our present experience and reality. The most profound satisfactions, the deepest feelings of joy and completeness lie as close at hand as our next aware breath and the smile we can form right now.Lucidly and beautifully written, Peace Is Every Step contains commentaries and meditations, personal anecdotes and stories from Nhat Hanh's experiences as a peace activist, teacher, and community leader. It begins where the reader already is—in the kitchen, office, driving a car, walking a part—and shows how deep meditative presence is available now. Nhat Hanh provides exercises to increase our awareness of our own body and mind through conscious breathing, which can bring immediate joy and peace. Nhat Hanh also shows how to be aware of relationships with others and of the world around us, its beauty and also its pollution and injustices. the deceptively simple practices of Peace Is Every Step encourage the reader to work for peace in the world as he or she continues to work on sustaining inner peace by turning the "mindless" into the mindFUL.

Al-Ghazali on Disciplining the Soul and on Breaking the Two Desires

Abu Hamid al-Ghazali - 1990
Distracted and polluted by worldliness, the lower self has a tendency to drag the human creature down into arrogance and vice. Only by a powerful effort of will can the sincere worshipper achieve the purity of soul which enables him to attain God's proximity. This translation of two chapters from The Revival of the Religious Sciences (Ihya' 'Ulum al-Din) details the sophisticated spiritual techniques adopted by classical Islam. In the first step, On Disciplining the Soul, which cites copious anecdotes from the Islamic scriptures and biographies of the saints, Ghazali explains how to acquire good character traits, and goes on to describe how the sickness of the heart may be cured. In the second part, Breaking the Two Desires, he focusses on the question of gluttony and sexual desire, concluding, in the words of the Prophet, that 'the best of all matters is the middle way'. The translator has added an introduction and notes which explore Ghazali's ability to make use of Greek as well as Islamic ethics. The work will prove of special interest to those interested in Sufi mysticism, comparative ethics, and the question of sexuality in Islam.

The Ragamuffin Gospel: Good News for the Bedraggled, Beat-Up, and Burnt Out

Brennan Manning - 1990
We beat ourselves up over our failures and, in the process, pull away from God because we subconsciously believe He tallies our defects and hangs His head in disappointment. In this newly repackaged edition--now with full appendix, study questions, and the author's own epilogue, ""Ragamuffin" Ten Years Later," Brennan Manning reminds us that nothing could be further from the truth. The Father beckons us to Himself with a "furious love" that burns brightly and constantly. Only when we truly embrace God's grace can we bask in the joy of a gospel that enfolds the most needy of His flock--the "ragamuffins."Are you bedraggled, beat-up, burnt-out?Most of us believe in God's grace--in theory. But somehow we can't seem to apply it in our daily lives. We continue to see Him as a small-minded bookkeeper, tallying our failures and successes on a score sheet.Yet God gives us His grace, willingly, no matter what we've done. We come to Him as ragamuffins--dirty, bedraggled, and beat-up. And when we sit at His feet, He smiles upon us, the chosen objects of His "furious love."Brennan Manning 's now-classic meditation on grace and what it takes to access it--simple honesty--has changed thousands of lives. Now with a Ragamuffin's thirty-day spiritual journey guide, it will change yours, too.

We, The Arcturians

Norma J. Milanovich - 1990
Norma Milanovich, who resides in Albuquerque, New Mexico, was living a quiet, quite normal existence when she began experiencing a series of extraordinary events. These events began with strange paranormal and psychic experiences and have escalated to her receiving transmissions via her microcomputer from other life forms who have identified themselves as Beings from the star Arcturus. With the support and assistance of two friends, Betty Rice and Cynthia Plosky, a book, WE, THE ARCTURIANS, has been produced which contains numerous messages transmitted from these Beings. The Arcturians, speaking through Norma, have sent Earthlings a gentle message regarding their purpose for being here. They claim they are here to assist Earth as it enters a New Age of spirituality. They cannot interfere with the free will or decision-making process of any Earthling, but are here to educate and help raise the vibrations of all who choose to journey to the new dimension the Earth is entering. They are also "commissioned" to help us understand the true nature of God, ourselves, and the universes.Who are these Beings and why are they here? Are they friends, foes or merely observers? The answer to these questions may come from the words of the Arcturians themselves :We wish only to be accepted on the Earth plane for the gifts and benefits that we bring. We try to do our jobs with total dedication to the Light and to the sisters and brothers of Earth, whom we serve. We would like for this document to be read as the comparison of two different worlds. We look for ways to belong. We do not wish to be considered separate in a universe that is only one.We are talking about a transit of time, over the next several years, that will transform the energy of the beloved Earth to a Garden of Eden in the galaxy.

A Vast Illusion: Time According to A Course in Miracles

Kenneth Wapnick - 1990
Yet there is a plan behind appearances that does not change. The script is written. When experience will come to end your doubting has been set. For we but see the journey from the point at which it ended, looking back on it, imagining we make it once again; reviewing mentally what has gone by. (Workbook Lesson 158) The concept of time is central to the thought system ofA Course in Miracles, from a metaphysical point of view as well as our experience in the everyday world. And yet time is clearly the most difficult area in the Course to understand. This is so not only because of the subject matter, but because the Course for the most part refrains from an in-depth discussion of a concept that is beyond the comprehension of a temporal-spatial mind. However, in one passage Jesus specifically states that to understand the Atonement plan, one must understand the concept of time that the Course sets forth. This book therefore discusses the various aspects of time that are the foundation for the Course's teachings of forgiveness.

Despite heavy resistance or lack of recognition from patriarchal medicine, they are nevertheless making positive changes that will continue and increase. Women’s emphasis on one-to-one work practiced in mutual agreement and participation is very different from mechanized and big-money medicine, and has results and successes far beyond expectations. The emphasis on self-healing returns health care to the consumer, to women’s lives and bodies, for the first time in centuries. The medical system cannot control a movement held in the hands of women, though it may try. Women are taking control again of healing, our daughter-right, for the first time since the matriarchies and the Inquisition.”—from the Introduction

The Man Who Met God in a Bar: The Gospel According to Marvin: A Novel

Robert Farrar Capon - 1990
It is deserted except for one young man who engages Marvin in a whimsical, teasing and slightly outrageous conversation leaving Marvin befuddled. He says his name is Jerry, he's a sort-order-cook and he's God. Marvin, no surprise, is skeptical. To say the least. Marvin is also intrigued. He is less skeptical and more intrigued a week later after meeting with Jerry's cousin, Spencer-- a big, rough raw-boned man in both appearance and demeanor. Despite himself, Marvin is drawn into a circle of people much like himself, all drawn somehow to Jerry and not really sure what to believe about him. For not only does Jerry still claim to be God, he also says that he's going to die (perhaps fairly soon), that he will rise from his grave and that everybody will benefit from it. The reader of this fantasy/parable/gospel soon comes to recognize New Testament characters and events in distinctly modern dress. They are by turns, honest, wisecracking, endearing, raucous, flip, devoted followers, shocked observers, pious and cynical. The gospel events here take on a new air, a vivid new reality. Instead of loaves and fishes on a hillside, Jerry feeds the crowd in a downtown park on pizza with anchovies. Rather than Galilee, Jerry and his "witnesses" all retreat to Cincinnati for a few days off. Marvin, who has been appointed "chief witness" by Jerry, is the narrator of this tale and we hear his own unique voice. He is sometimes sarcastic, sometimes ironic, whimsical, teasing, incredulous, funny, decidedly regional ("you ain't gonna believe this,but...") and awestruck. Like most disciples, Marvin is himself a mixture of belief and unbelief. Yet in the end--through a death under cloudy circumstances, a resurrection, and a rather stunning display at the Cleveland airport-- Marvin writes it all down because his uncertainties matter less than his faith to Jerry.

The Art Of Persian Music

Jean During - 1990

It has unique aesthetic qualities quite different from Western music. It is monophonic, undramatic, and mostly solo, with rich modal variety and melodic subtlety--an intimate music of the spirit most appreciated by the initiated. This book provides the keys and definitions essential for understanding Persian music: its history, instruments, repertory, organisation, rhythms, and modes (or dastaghs). Through quotes and anecdotes by and about masters past and present, the reader can grasp the ethos, spirit, and philosophy of Persian music. Filled with exquisite illustrations of instruments and musicians from museums around the world, as well poetry and calligraphy, this volume will introduce the enthusiast both to the whole aesthetic of Persian art and the art of Persian music. Zen and the Psychology of Transformation: The Supreme Doctrine

Hubert Benoît - 1990
It is for this reason that we turn to Western psychology and metaphysics for help in solving our problems. The approach of psychology and psychotherapy is based on "statistical normality," or the behavior of the greatest number. In an effort to conform, we focus on our problems rather than our possibilities, emulating a norm that falls drastically short of our full capacity for development. Oriental thought, and Zen thought in particular, seeks to activate the true potential of men and women--to transform our lives, and thereby enable us to shed our problems and suffering. The Supreme Doctrine applies the essence of Oriental Wisdom to the pursuit of self-knowledge and transcendence. The first step in a holistic psychology is to begin examining the true “state of man”, rather than its aberrations. In so doing, we can give new direction and purpose to our lives. The author does not advocate “conversion” to Eastern thought, but rather an integration of East and West, wherein Western psychological thinking and reasoning can be enriched and clarified by Oriental wisdom.

Take the Reins

John L. Moore - 1990
Moore (best known for his fiction, including The Breaking of Ezra Riley) is a rancher who lives north of Miles City, Montana. Take the Reins consists of short meditations on experiences that he and his son Jess have shared on the ranch, where bad luck, drought, disease, and other dangers constantly shatter any illusions that this world is a safe place to live. The book's basic lesson is that only God offers security. Admirably, Moore manages to convey this lesson without denigrating the physical world. The book has more than its share of excitement and suspense--runaway horses, hunting trips, long hours lost on the plains--and it is equally adept at poignant understatement. (Describing his care for a sick calf, Moore writes that "We carried the calf to the bathroom and lowered the cold body into the warm water. The smell of afterbirth came alive in the heat.") Take the Reins is a fine book whose lessons regarding paternal love have a quiet, universal appeal.

The Circle Of The Sun: A Clarification Of The Most Excellent Of All Vehicles, The Secret And Unexcelled Luminous Vajra Essence

Tsele Natsok Rangdrol - 1990
You, the followers of such teaching, pay careful attention to his advice. Short and concise, profound and encompassing, you should study it with great interest. ...Out of great kindness to destined and worthy practitioners, Tsele Natsok Rangdrol extracted the essence of all the Dzogchen tantras and presented it in a most comprehensive and complete form. ...The most effective style of teaching for a practitioner in this dark age is not a lengthy scholarly explanation but a direct 'guidance manual' ... a short, comprehensive teaching. The Dzogchen tantras themselves were written down in a style which shrouds and conceals the meaning so that only a master extremely well-versed in oral instructions and treatises would be able to clarify the tantric statements. A guidance manual, on the other hand, is written down using oral instructions so as to be lucid and simple. ...Trekcho and thogal are the two main topics in this book.-- Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche
