The Francis A. Schaeffer Trilogy: The 3 Essential Books in 1 Volume/the God Who Is There/Escape from Reason/He Is There and He Is Not Silent

Francis A. Schaeffer - 1990
Francis A. Schaeffer. A man with a remarkable breadth of cultural interest, with penetrating insight into modern life, and with a clear sense of spiritual reality, Schaeffer was also a man who cared deeply about people and their search for truth and reality in their lives. With the publication of this Trilogy, Dr. Schaeffer's three foundational books are available for the first time in one volume. Schaeffer himself considered these three books to be essential to everything he wrote (twenty-three books in all), and it is here especially that we see his ability to understand the deep need of modern man for truth, beauty, and meaning in life.In the first book, The God Who Is There, Schaeffer shows how modern thought has abandoned the idea of truth with tragic consequences in every area of culture-from philosophy, to art, to music, to theology, and within culture as a whole.Escape from Reason, the second book, explains especially how the disintegration of modern life and culture grows from corrupted roots that reach far into the past.In the last book, He Is There and He Is Not Silent, Schaeffer contrasts the silence and despair of modern life with the Christian answer that God can indeed be known because He is there and He is not silent. In addition to the convenience of having Schaeffer's three foundational books in one volume, the Trilogy is especially valuable in that it uses the text revised and updated by Schaeffer shortly before his death. Why was Schaeffer able to understand and communicate so effectively to a generation? The best way to know is to find out firsthand, by reading his essential works as found in this Trilogy. Few who begin this journey will come to the end without having their life profoundly changed.

A Quest for Godliness

J.I. Packer - 1990
    I. Packer has had a long-standing passion for the Puritans. Their understanding of God and His ways with man has largely formed his own spirituality and theological outlook. In A Quest for Godliness, the esteemed author of Knowing God and a dozen other books shares with his readers the rich world of Puritanism that has been so influential in his own life.Dr. Packer masterfully uncovers the hidden treasures of Puritan life and thought. With crystalline clarity he reveals the depth and breadth of Puritan spiritual life, contrasting it with the superficiality and deadness of modern Western Christianity.Drawing on a lifetime of study, Dr. Packer takes the reader on a survey of the lives and teachings of great Puritan leaders such as John Owen, Richard Baxter, and Jonathan Edwards. He offers a close look at such subjects as the Puritan view of the Bible, spiritual gifts, the Sabbath, worship, social action, and the family. He concludes that a main difference between the Puritans and ourselves is spiritual maturity--the Puritans had it; we don't.In a time of failing vision and decaying values, this powerful portrait of Puritans is a beacon of hope that calls us to radical commitment and action when both are desperately needed.A Quest for Godliness is a profoundly moving and challenging exploration of Puritan life and thought in a beautifully written book. Here is J. I. Packer at his very best.

Justification by Faith

James R. White - 1990
Why did the Reformers insist so strongly that justification was by faith alone, and not as a result of human works? And why is the legal aspect of justification so important? Does justification really differ from regeneration and sanctification? Why is this important? The heart of the believer will be filled with praise for God when His gracious act of justification is clearly understood. Believers of each generation must be called to examine this central theme of the gospel of God's grace-not only so that they may properly praise God for what He has done for them in Christ, but so that they may resist the onslaught of false teachings about how a man is made right with God. While presenting a positive statement of the Biblical doctrine of justification, this work is also designed to help those who do not accept the Bible's clear doctrine of justification by faith to understand the issues, and the ramifications of their rejection of this vital truth. All are invited to bow in adoration before God for His merciful plan of salvation.

Knowing the Heart of God

George MacDonald - 1990
Discovering the Character of God and Knowing the Heart of God have been carefully put together by editor Michael Phillips. Combining thematically relevant portions of poetry, sermons, and fiction, each title will help lead serious readers into deeper regions of faith in God. Knowing the Heart of God presents MacDonald's philosophy for discovering life's great truths. He insisted this could be done in a simple two-step process by first realizing who God is, and then obeying him. MacDonald trumpets obedience as the door in knowing God intimately. A challenging work, Knowing the Heart of God ultimately brings readers to the very feet of a loving father who wants to be known by his faithful.

Truth And Tolerance: Christian Belief And World Religions

Benedict XVI - 1990
Describing the vast array of world religions, Ratzinger embraces the difficult challenge of meeting diverse understandings of spiritual truth while defending the Catholic teaching of salvation through Jesus Christ. "But what if it is true?" is the question that he poses to cultures that decry the Christian position on man's redemption. Upholding the notion of religious truth while asserting the right of religious freedom, Cardinal Ratzinger outlines the timeless teaching of the Magisterium in language that resonates with our embattled culture. A work of extreme sensitivity, understanding, and spiritual maturity, this book is an invaluable asset to those who struggle to hear the voice of truth in the modern religious world."Beyond all particular questions, the real problem lies in the question about truth. Can truth be recognized? Or, is the question about truth simply inappropriate in the realm of religion and belief? But what meaning does belief then have, what positive meaning does religion have, if it cannot be connected with truth?" —Joseph Cardinal RatzingerFrom the Preface

The Greatness of the Great Commission: The Christian Enterprise in a Fallen World

Kenneth L. Gentry Jr. - 1990
Having encountered heavy resistance to the prophet's message of comprehensive revival and restoration in history, modern evangelical Christianity has abandoned the prophets. Unlike Jonah, who grew weary of life in the belly of a whale, modern evangelicalism has not only grown accustomed to the Church's cultural irrelevance today, it has actually proclaimed this pathetic condition as God's plan for the "Church Age." But is it? Not according to Jesus' instructions to His Church: the discipline (putting under God's discipline) of all nations.Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen (Matthew 28:19-20).Paul makes it clear that the progressive expansion of Jesus' kingdom in history will continue until all things are under His dominion, on earth, before He returns physically to judge the world. "For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet. The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death" (I Corinthians 15-25-26). This was David's message, too:The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool. The Lord shall send the rod of thy strength out of Zion: rule thou in the midst of thine enemies(Psalm 110:1-2)In The Greatness of the Great Commission, Rev. Kenneth L. Gentry, Jr. presents a comprehensive biblical case for God's comprehensive salvation and restoration in history. Sin is comprehensive; God's healing grace is no less comprehensive. Whenever sin reigns today, there God speaks to sinful man and offers a way of escape. "There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it" (I Corinthians 10:13). To argue that the Great Commission does not include every aspect of today's cultures - all of Satan's kingdom - is to argue that there is no way of escape in many areas of life. The war between God's kingdom (civilization) on earth and Satan's kingdom (civilization) on earth is total, encompassing every aspect of life. The Great Commission calls the Church (in this "Church Age") to make a full-scale attack on modern humanist civilization, but always in terms of a positive message and practical program: a better way of life in every area of life. This is the greatness of the Great Commission. It must not be narrowed to exclude culture from God's special grace.

The Poet, the Warrior, the Prophet

Rubem Alves - 1990
Echer, many of whose pictures the book reproduces. The book draws on the writings of Rainer Maria Rilke, Gabriel Garcia Marques, Emily Dickinson, Albert Camus, Sigmund Freud and the "Tao Te Ching," among other works, to show how good theology is best compared to the image of wild birds flapping their wings and refusing to be caged. This material was originally delivered at the 1990 Edward Cadbury Lectures in the University of Birmingham.

Messiah the Prince: Or, The Mediatorial Dominion of Jesus Christ

William Symington - 1990
William Symington, a 19th century Reformed Presbyterian and Scottish pastor, wrote Messiah the Prince to examine the particular significance of Jesus Christ as King.Revelation 1:5 says that Christ is the “prince of the kings of the earth.” What obligations does this place upon the civil magistrate? What obligations might this place upon the people who are governed, including those people who vote for their civil magistrate? Of what significance is the truth that the One who was the atoning sacrifice for His people (the Priest) and the one who spoke and taught the Word in its fullness (the Prophet) is also the Ruler of all (the King)? What might it mean when Jesus said, “Make all nations My disciples”?Symington answers these questions is a way that will push some modern Christians past their comfort zone. He makes that case that Christ is reigning now and that all nations must answer to Him, and it is the Church’s responsibility to make that call on the nations, their governors and their governed.

Disputations with Pyrrhus

The Sacred in Life and Art

Philip Sherrard - 1990
This book is an attempt to clarify what is demanded if we are to have a chance of achieving this. It examines the nature and significance of the sacred itself, why the sense of its presence has been so disastrously eroded from our conciousness over recent centuries. The Crisis of Religious Symbolism & Symbolism and Reality

Jean Borella - 1990
Although published seven years apart, these two works are integral to one another. Symbolism and Reality represents a kind of sabbath rest--its subtitle says "reflection"--after the mighty works of The Crisis of Religious Symbolism, where the deep structures of three hundred years of Western philosophical and cultural development are brought to the surface, analyzed, and made meaningful in the light of what Jean Borella has termed "the metaphysics of the symbol." Together, these two books represent a cleansing and restoration of a Christian vision of the world. Through Jean Borella's witness to the death and resurrection of religious symbolism presented here, we are given entrance to a world renewed in Christ. "Borella's writing shines with wayside jewels of intuition, as well as proceeding with a rich vein of theological reasoning."--Malachi MartinThe French Catholic religious philosopher Jean Borella (b. 1930) taught metaphysics and the history of ancient and medieval philosophy at the University of Nancy II until his retirement in 1995. Besides the present works on sacred symbology, he has also written important texts on charity, analogy, Christian gnosis, mystical theology, and sacred exegesis. His latest work is To the Biblical Sources of Metaphysics (2015).

The Triple Knowledge: An Exposition of the Heidelberg Catechism

Herman Hoeksema - 1990
Three volumes, constituting the most extensive commentary on the catechism in English, may well be Hoeksema's greatest work. In the contents of these books one will find all the distinctive truths of the Reformed faith clearly and biblically expounded, and sharply set forth against the lie. The author, being a strong preacher of God's sovereign grace and unconditional covenant of friendship, expounds the doctrines of Scripture in a warm and personal way so that the child of God who meditates upon these pages sees more and more how these glorious truths are, indeed, his "only comfort in life and death." "The author again and again sets forth the glory of God as the object of our life and all our living...Thought provoking, an excellent addition to solid Reformed literature. I would advise ministers and all earnest students of Biblical doctrine to get these books, and study them carefully." —William Hendriksen

The Call to Personhood: A Christian Theory of the Individual in Social Relationships

Alistair McFadyen - 1990
Christian trinitarian theology is accordingly interwoven with contemporary social thought to provide an account of individuality and of the various dimensions of personal existence (the psychological, the interpersonal, the material, the institutional, the political, the spiritual) in terms of communication. The basic theme of this book is that we become the people we are as our identities are shaped through the patterns of relation, communication and exchange that surround and incorporate us.

The Emptying God: A Buddhist-Jewish-Christian Conversation

John B. Cobb Jr. - 1990
A profound scholar of Buddhism and of Christian theology, his critical and constructive reflections culminate in the seminal essay that is the cornerstone of this volume. Seven eminent scholars respond to the challenge of Abe's construal of Kenotic God and Dynamic Sunyata. Abe demonstrates powerfully the dynamism of the Buddhist appreciation of the divine Emptiness at the heart of Being. His essay suggests how the doctrine of sunyata can provide a needed corrective to the reified understanding of God prominent in Jewish and Christian traditions. Abe opens the way for new and deeper engagement of these traditions with the wisdom of Buddhism. Leading Christian and Jewish theologians--Thomas J. J. Altizer, Eugene Borowitz, John B. Cobb, Jr., Catherine Keller, Schubert M. Ogden, Jurgen Moltmann, and David Tracy--respond to Abe's challenge. From perspectives as diverse as American feminism, post-Holocaust Judaism, process thought, and hermeneutics, they reply to Abe's proposals for considering God to be intrinsically self-emptying. Abe responds to these essays in a conclusion. Provocative and illuminating, The Emptying God shows how interfaith dialogue, at its very best, provides materials for the mutual transformation of all traditions.

The Man Who Met God in a Bar: The Gospel According to Marvin: A Novel

Robert Farrar Capon - 1990
It is deserted except for one young man who engages Marvin in a whimsical, teasing and slightly outrageous conversation leaving Marvin befuddled. He says his name is Jerry, he's a sort-order-cook and he's God. Marvin, no surprise, is skeptical. To say the least. Marvin is also intrigued. He is less skeptical and more intrigued a week later after meeting with Jerry's cousin, Spencer-- a big, rough raw-boned man in both appearance and demeanor. Despite himself, Marvin is drawn into a circle of people much like himself, all drawn somehow to Jerry and not really sure what to believe about him. For not only does Jerry still claim to be God, he also says that he's going to die (perhaps fairly soon), that he will rise from his grave and that everybody will benefit from it. The reader of this fantasy/parable/gospel soon comes to recognize New Testament characters and events in distinctly modern dress. They are by turns, honest, wisecracking, endearing, raucous, flip, devoted followers, shocked observers, pious and cynical. The gospel events here take on a new air, a vivid new reality. Instead of loaves and fishes on a hillside, Jerry feeds the crowd in a downtown park on pizza with anchovies. Rather than Galilee, Jerry and his "witnesses" all retreat to Cincinnati for a few days off. Marvin, who has been appointed "chief witness" by Jerry, is the narrator of this tale and we hear his own unique voice. He is sometimes sarcastic, sometimes ironic, whimsical, teasing, incredulous, funny, decidedly regional ("you ain't gonna believe this,but...") and awestruck. Like most disciples, Marvin is himself a mixture of belief and unbelief. Yet in the end--through a death under cloudy circumstances, a resurrection, and a rather stunning display at the Cleveland airport-- Marvin writes it all down because his uncertainties matter less than his faith to Jerry.

My Work: In Retrospect

Hans Urs von Balthasar - 1990
Then, in the midst of the transformations connected with the Council, he wrote an "Account" for himself and his readers, about what had been done, and what was still required. Finally, in a kind of pause, as one already looking toward the close of his life, he gave once again an account of what had been achieved and what could no longer be achieved, in a clear shift of emphasis away from his "authorship" in favor of the pastoral work in the communities which he had founded. This present volume is a helpful guide to his many-sided work.

Announcements of Plot in Genesis

Laurence A. Turner - 1990
The author concludes that the 'Announcements' influence their narratives in many different ways and that they are misleading indicators of how plots will develop. Genesis is more concerned to present the ironies of human motive and divine providence than to recount the working out of any pre-ordained plan on God's part. This original and refreshing monograph, written in a vigorous style, is certain to alter the way readers remember the Genesis stories.

Faith And Saving Faith (Trinity Paper No. 5)

The Cruciform Church: Becoming a Cross-Shaped Person in a Secular World

C. Leonard Allen - 1990
On the one hand, our culture is more clearly post-modern and post-Christian. All of the Christian players today are finding themselves cultural outsiders, much like the earliest Christians. We are waking up to the reality that we are in a missionary situation in our own culture, and this is forcing us (slowly, by fits and starts) to rethink our priorities and our mission. On the other hand, Churches of Christ themselves are engaging more and more in the kind of healthy theological rethinking that this book called for back in 1990. Many congregations are shedding the sectarian or exclusivist outlook, gaining new appreciation for their heritage, refocusing on the central doctrines of the faith, and entering into serious dialogue about carrying out the mission of God in this new time...Perhaps this new edition can continue to provide stimulus and guidance as the adventure continues. Toward that end, this edition contains a new chapter, ""Last(ing) Things,"" that seeks to show the close relationship between eschatology and discipleship, between one's view of the coming kingdom of God and the cruciform life."" - From Allen's Preface to the Revised Edition

Theology Is for Proclamation

Gerhard O. Forde - 1990

Tragedy in the Church: The Missing Gifts

A.W. Tozer - 1990
    W. Tozer points out why so many Christians and churches today are weak. But he doesn't leave us without hope. He uplifts our spirits and helps us recognize what God wants to do in and through each and every one of us.These sermons deal directly with the subjects of the Christian church and the spiritual basis for its varied and continuing ministries. They display A. W. Tozer's love, appreciation, and concern for the church, which motivated him to so consistently issue caution. Tozer always yearned to reveal to the Christina and Missionary Alliance a desire for each church member to reach their full potential for honoring the Lord Jesus Christ, and this book represents that yearning well.

At the Origins of Modern Atheism

Michael Buckley - 1990
Buckley investigates the origins and development of modern atheism and argues convincingly that its impetus lies paradoxically in the very attempts to counter it.  Although modern atheism finds its initial exponents in Denis Diderot and Paul d’Holbach in the eighteenth century, their works bring to completion a dialectical process that reaches back to the theologians and philosophers of an earlier period.  During the seventeenth century, theologians such as Leonard Lessius and Marin Mersenne determined that in order to defend the existence of god, religious apologetics must become philosophy, surrendering as its primary warrant any intrinsically religious experience or evidence.  The most influential philosophers of the period, René Descartes and Isaac Newton, and the theologians who followed them accepted this settlement, and the new sciences were enlisted to provide the foundation for religion. Almost no one suspected the profound contradictions that this process entailed and that would eventually resolve themselves through the negation of god.  In transferring to other areas of human experience and inquiry its fundamental responsibility to deal with the existence of god, religion dialectically generated its own denial.  The origins and extraordinary power of modern atheism lie with this progressive self-alienation of religion itself.

Richard Hooker's Doctrine of the Royal Supremacy (Studies in the History of Christian Thought, Vol 43)

W.J. Torrance Kirby - 1990
His apologetic intention was 'to resolve the consciences' of the Disciplinarian-Puritan critics of the Elizabethan Settlement by a demonstration that the Royal Supremacy was wholly consistent with the principles of doctrinal orthodoxy as understood and upheld by the Magisterial Reformation. This study commences with a look at some current problems of interpretation and then examines Hooker's apologetic aim and methodology. Subsequent chapters demonstrate Hooker's reliance on the teaching of the Magisterial Reformers in the formulation of both the soteriological foundations of his political thought and his ecclesiology. Hooker's appeal to the authority of Patristic Christological and Trinitarian Orthodoxy in support of the Royal Supremacy is also discussed. The purpose of this book is to uncover the theological roots of a central aspect of Hooker's political thought, and thereby to attempt to shed new light on an important Elizabethan controversy.

Frederick W. Norris - 1990

The second is a commentary that concentrates on the context and flow of his arguments about paideia and theology. The third is a new English translation, the first complete one, that evokes the logical and rhetorical power of Nazianzen and through its Biblical citations shows the importance of scripture in the debates.

Shaping Character: Moral Education in the Christian College

Arthur F. Holmes - 1990
Arguing that ethics is everybody's business, Arthur Holmes presents in this book a concise survey of moral education—its goals and methods—in the Christian college. Arising out of a three-year Christian College Consortium project, Shaping Character reflects the insights of a rich variety of experts, writers, and faculty members. Holmes first orients his readers to the present ethical climate, to theological dimensions and distinctive in ethics, and to moral development theory. He then poses three overall objectives of ethics education—forming the conscience, making moral decisions, and developing character—and fleshes out each objective with particular goals. Throughout the book Holmes makes suggestions about the role of faculty and staff, paying special attention to teaching methods and noting the context and dynamics of college life in general. The final chapter summarizes how the Bible functions in ethics. Shaping Character is meant for all Christian college teachers, professors, and administrators concerned about student values and the moral condition of our society. The book will serve as a valuable and practical guide for teaching ethics in every department.Richard J. Mouw (Fuller Theological Seminary): "Arthur Holmes has written a profound book on a timely topic. It ought to be widely read. More importantly, its wise insights and prescriptions ought to be put into practice wherever people care about faithful and effective Christian higher education."

Expanding the View: Gustavo Gutierrez and the Future of Liberation Theology

Marc H. Ellis - 1990
The resulting volume, The Future of Liberation Theology, included over fifty papers presented at that historic gathering.Expanding the View takes key essays from that landmark volume and makes them available for the first time in paperback. From the wealth of material, essays were selected to provide the most comprehensive overview of critical thinking on liberation theology--both its past developments and the challenges it faces in the future.Among the issues addressed: the ways liberation theology has grown and developed in its treatment of popular religion, Marxism, and women's issues, and the contribution of liberation theology to interreligious dialogue, Catholic social teaching, and the struggle for human rights. Critical questions are raised about the future possibilities of liberation theology. Above all, many of the contributors assess the significance of this theology from the Third World for Christians living in the affluent First World.Ideal for classroom use, and essential reading for everyone interested in this vital movement, this volume includes Gutirrez's own "Expanding the View," which introduces the fifteenth anniversary edition of A Theology of Liberation. Contributors include: Elisabeth Schssler Fiorenza, Aloysius Pieris, Arthur McGovern, Franois Houtart, Harvey Cox, Edward Schillebeeckx, Rosemary Ruether, Penny Lernoux, Leonardo Boff, Johann Baptist Metz, Gregory Baum, Jos Mguez Bonino, Pablo Richard, Robert

Reason for Being: A Meditation on Ecclesiastes

Jacques Ellul - 1990

While interacting with recent scholarship, Ellul presents a unique interpretation and contemporary application of "the profound and paradoxical Qohelet."Examining specific passages in his development of the three general themes, Ellul considers theological, philosophical, and literary aspects of the text and asserts his own opinion on the book's place in Scripture and the gospel. Ellul's treatment of the book's irony and paradoxes, an often problematic matter which he sees as the key to understanding Ecclesiastes, sheds valuable light on the book as well as on life itself.

Theology in Postliberal Perspective

Daniel Liechty - 1990
Even movements like "biblical theology" or the kind of theology of revelation centered on Jesus Christ, such as Karl Barth championed, seem to have had their day in our pluralistic world. In addition, a return to the liberalism that was so dominant at the beginning of this century - important though many of its insights and approaches may still be - seems impossible. What, then, is the alternative? The only course open is to go forward from where we are now, taking seriously all of the features of our modern world. This is what Daniel Liechty aspires to do in this book. Writing from experience in the United States and in Europe, against a Quaker and Mennonite background, he offers a fascinating outline of postliberal theology, covering all the major theological themes: evil, God, Jesus, Christology, Church, dogma and world faiths. Liechty may not be the first to make such an attempt, but his work excels due to its combination of depth and its remarkable clarity. As he comments: "I have tried here simply to say what I have to say, as clearly as possible and as briefly as possible." In Theology in Postliberal Perspective many will find precisely the kind of guidance to their thinking that they have been looking for in our perplexing age.
