Gustav Klimt, 1862–1918: The World in Female Form

Gottfried Fliedl - 1990
Gustav Klimt's art is thoroughly fin de siècle. It expresses the apocalyptic atmosphere of Vienna's upper-middle-class society — a society devoted to the cultivation of aesthetic awareness and the cult of pleasure. The ecstatic joy which Klimt (1862-1918) and his contemporaries found — or hoped to find — in beauty was constantly overshadowed by death, and death therefore plays an important role in Klimt's art. Klimt's fame, however, rests on his reputation as one of the greatest erotic painters and graphic artists of his times. Particularly his drawings, which have been widely admired for their artistic excellence, are dominated by the erotic portrayal of women. Klimt saw the world "in female form." Author Gottfried Fliedlalso discusses the Secession movement and Klimt's role within this important group of artists.

The Message of Acts: The Spirit, the Church, and the World

John R.W. Stott - 1990
That is how it has always been since the day of Pentecost when the Spirit brought thousands from many countries into the body of Christ. With the breadth and scholarly care that have marked John Stott's years of ministry, this book opens to us the early days of the church as recorded by Luke in the book of Acts. The experiences of the early church have much to say about issues that concern Christians today. What can Acts tell us about tongues and other extraordinary manifestations of the Spirit? How should churches structure themselves--with elders, deacons, pastors or all three? What should a normal Christian conversion look like? And, of course, how should the church reach out into the world with the message of salvation? These and many other topics are handled with a pastoral heart and an unwavering commitment to the authority of God's Word in our lives. As Stott concludes, The Acts of the Apostles have long ago finished; the acts of the followers of Jesus will continue until the end of the world.

Originally published in 1990 and out of print for almost 10 years, Swedish Carving Techniques by Wille Sundqvist has enjoyed cult status among carvers and craftsmen and is widely considered the bible of spoon carvers. Now a brand-new issue - just like the 1990 version - can be yours directly from The Taunton Press, the original publisher.Sharpened axes and knives are the oldest hand tools known to man. As the author says, "I have come to recognize that there is an enormous lack of understanding and skill in using hand tools....This, along with a realization of the close relationship between hand tools and the keen sense of design that was our forefathers', has prompted me to write this book." Swedish Carving Techniques brings a new appreciation of this age-old craft and how working with knives and axes fits into todays high-tech world.Lessons from a life-long carver who loves working with his hands. In honest, straightforward style, Wille Sundqvist shares his love for basic hand tools and the practical objects they can produce from branches, burls, and crooked pieces of wood. He brings this simple art to life by showing you:The hand tools he works with and how to sharpen them Carving techniques and different kinds of strokes Tips for designing spoons for maximum strength How to shape dough bowls, butter paddles, and ladles Techniques for adding decorative detailingPlus safety tips for enjoying this age-old craft Re-discovering traditional handcrafts and "rewards not possible with machines." Carving, as practiced by Wille Sundqvist, has great appeal in a complex world because it doesn't require a huge commitment of time or a special shop. But it does improve dexterity, build strength, encourage creativity, reduce dependence on technology, and keep alive the rich cultural heritage of Swedish craftsmen.

Affirmations for the Inner Child

Rokelle Lerner - 1990
As children, these powerful messages helped us to know that we were worthwhile, that it was all right to want food and to be touched, and that our very existence was a precious gift. The messages that we received from our parents helped us to form decisions that determined the course of our lives. If we were raised with consistent, nurturing parents, we conclude that life is meaningful and that people are to be trusted. If we were raised with parents who were addictively or compulsively ill, we determine that life is threatening and chaotic--that we are not deserving of joy. These are the crucial decisions that impact our lives long after we have forgotten them. Unfortunately, childhood judgments don't disappear. They remain as dynamic forces that contaminate our adulthood. When childhood needs are not taken care of because of abuse or abandonment, we spend our lives viewing the world through the distorted perception of a needy infant or an angry adolescent. The more we push these child parts away, the more control they have over us. This collection of daily meditations is dedicated to those adults who are ready to heal their childhood wounds. It is through this courageous effort that we will move from a life of pain into recovery.

Lingua Latina per se Illustrata: Pars II: Roma Aeterna

Hans Henning Ørberg - 1990
This volume introduces the most celebrated authors of antiquity through the lens of Roman history. A vivid description of the city's monuments precedes a prose retelling of the first four books of Virgil's Aeneid with many of the most famous passages in their original verse form. The selection from Virgil is followed by book on of Livy's engaging mythical history of Rome's foundation. The prose selections are judiciously chosen and, in the first few chapters, gently adapted to provide students with a text that is authentically Latin and yet not difficult. The unadapted selections, which make up the majority of the text, are taken from Aulus Gellius, Ovid, Nepos, Sallust, and Horace. These annotated selections make Roma Aeterna useful both as the next step after Familia Romana and as a survey of Latin literature in its own right.Features include:- Latin immersion: Every word, cover to cover, is in Latin with vowel lengths marked.- Approximately 3,000 new vocabulary words are taught- Each chapter includes a short discussion of grammar an three exercises- The original Latin of the most famous lines from the first four books of the Aeneid- Selections from the most celebrated authors of antiquity- Helpful margin notes- The grammar and vocabulary pick up when Familia Romana ends- Perfect for home-schoolers, as it covers the material of a course in Roman history- Index of Roman rulers and of hitorical events arranged chronologicallyThe Indices, available separately, is a supplement which contains lists of the Roman consuls and their triumphs (Fasti consulares and triumphales), as well as name and word indices covering the whole course. A Latin-English Vocabulary II is also available.

The emphasis on self-healing returns health care to the consumer, to women’s lives and bodies, for the first time in centuries. The medical system cannot control a movement held in the hands of women, though it may try. Women are taking control again of healing, our daughter-right, for the first time since the matriarchies and the Inquisition.”—from the Introduction

Complete Bible Commentary: (Fully Formatted For E-Readers)

John Wesley - 1990
John Wesley's explanatory notes on the Old Testament were written several years after his notes on the New Testament, and are based on the earlier works of Matthew Henry's 'Exposition of the Old and New Testaments', and Matthew Poole's 'English Annotations on the Holy Bible'. Extracts from both of these works are paraphrased and abridged by Wesley for the Explanatory Notes on the Old Testament, unlike the Explanatory Notes on the New Testament, which were entirely of his own composition. The Notes Upon The New Testament is considered to be one of John Wesley's principal works, and its readability, influence and popularity has remained since the time of its publication until today. First printed in 1755 by William Bowyer, John Wesley's Notes Upon The New Testament were entirely his own work, written during a period of illness which forced him to abandon his usual routine of travel and preaching. He would write from 5 am - 9 pm every day, unless he was riding, eating, or taking his personal devotion time (5 - 6 pm each evening). Charles Wesley assisted in some ways, including his translations of the gospels and in other unspecified ways. Wesley cites his influences for the New Testament Notes as the Gnomon Novi Testamenti of Bengel, the Paraphrase of Dr Guyse, the Theological Lectures of Dr Heylin and the Family Expositor of Dr Doddridge. The fourth and fifth editions of the Notes contained corrections by John & Charles Wesley and others. This edition features active table of contents and sub-menus optimized for e-readers, for ease of navigation to the specific book and chapter required. This is a very large book, please be patient when downloading.
