The New Testament and the People of God

N.T. Wright - 1991

This Lent course, which has been adapted from the book, helps us to reflect on the meaning of the parable for our own lives. Divided into five sessions, the course moves through the parable exploring our reaction to the story: the younger son's leaving and return, the father's restoration of sonship, the elder son's resentment and the father's compassion. All of us who have experienced loneliness, dejection, jealousy or anger will respond to the persistent themes of homecoming, affirmation and reconciliation.

Our Sufficiency in Christ

John F. MacArthur Jr. - 1991
--2 Peter 1:3Pure Christianity needs no embellishment whatsoever. We find complete sufficiency in Christ and His provision for our needs. But too many Christians have bought in to the notion that all the spiritual resources we gain at the moment of salvation are not adequate to meet the real needs in today's complex world. So they look for something more--an emotionally exciting and self-edifying experience not found in God's Word. This failure to understand the sufficiency of Christ has opened the door to all kinds of worldy influences, causing many modern believers to mix biblical truths with seemingly helpful man-made methods such as mysticism and psychology. As a result, they wallow in a watered-down, pseudo-Christanity that has been drained of its vitality, effectiveness, and security. In this book John MacArthur exposes the main ways Christians have displaced their spiritual resources and explains how to avoid making the same error. It will make you newly aware of how completely God provides--and give you a renewed understanding of what it means to be complete in Christ.

The Dream of God: A Call to Return

Verna J. Dozier - 1991
To help us get back on track, she examines the Bible: a theological and historical record of hundreds of years in which two communities of faith (Jewish and early Christian) explored their own life experiences. Our task now is not to ask which interpretations are correct, but to ask "what did it mean to them" and "what does it mean for us?" Dozier encourages us to see Christianity not as creed or institution, but as "the vision of a new possibility for human life rooted in an ancient understanding of God and lived out by a Nazarene carpenter."Through adept storytelling and study, Dozier reawakens our sense of calling and our desire for truth.

The Sources of Catholic Dogma

Henry Denzinger - 1991
You have such a book in this English translation of Father Heinrich Denzinger's Enchiridion Symbolorum et Definitionum. Since it was first published a century and a half ago, this handbook or collection (enchiridion) of articles (symbols) of faith and morals has enjoyed universal appeal and approbation since the pontificate of Blessed Pope Pius IX. The Enchiridion has been updated periodically; the edition being offered here by Loreto is that issued in 1957. The collection includes all articles and creeds of the Catholic Faith beginning with that of the twelve apostles, all dogmatic definitions stamped with the Petrine authority of the apostolic See (ex cathedra), decrees of the solemn magisterium, papal bulls, encyclicals and letters, as well as some of the more weighty decisions of the Holy Office prior to 1957. Although not every entry in this 653 page compendium of Church teaching is definitional (i.e. ex cathedra) it still should be considered the "locutus est" for every wayfaring Catholic whose patria, this side of heaven, is Roma. In addition to a general index there is a scriptural index plus an invaluable systematic or topical index making for very easy reference. Note, too, this edition comes with a one page Corrigenda which is a list of sixteen corrections that must be applied to errors (usually omissions) that escaped the eyes of editors in previous editions.

The Master's Plan for the Church

John F. MacArthur Jr. - 1991
Christ never intended church leadership to be earned by seniority, purchased with money, or inherited through family ties. He never compared church leaders to governing monarchs, but rather to humble shepherds. Not to slick celebrities, but to laboring servants. Drawing from some of the best-received material on church leadership, John MacArthur guides the church with crucial, effective lessons in leadership. This book is valuable not only for pastors and elders, but for anyone else who wants the church to be what God intended it to be.

Easy Chairs, Hard Words

Douglas Wilson - 1991
You will say to me then, "Why still find fault? For who has resisted His will?" But indeed, O man, who are you to reply against God? (Romans 9:18 20a) Hard words, indeed. But they remain, for all our explanations, God's words. Easy Chairs, Hard Words offers an honest look at many such difficult passages in Scripture. Presented as a series of fictional conversations between a curious young Christian and a seasoned pastor, these dialogues speak with clarity to those new to the Reformed faith. They begin with the question, "Can salvation be lost?" and from there wrestle with other hard-to-swallow doctrines, including the freedom of the will, election, and original sin. Hard words, and yet the understanding given these passages is thoughtful and gentle. For our God the God of hard words is a merciful and loving Father, slow to wrath and quick to pardon, a triune God who graciously rescues men from death and brings them into everlasting life."

Truth to Tell: The Gospel as Public Truth

Lesslie Newbigin - 1991
In emphasizing the Christian gospel as the truth that calls for radical conversion, Lesslie Newbigin runs counter to the prevailing subjectivism and skepticism in our society regarding the possibility of knowing ultimate truth. Societies like ours that have undergone "modernization" tend to regard the world's religions as agencies for the cultivation of privately held religious opinions -- agencies that can be studied with the tools of sociology, psychology, and other secular disciplines. But, says Newbigin, the Christian church is not simply an agency that stands for good personal values. In three pointed chapters -- "Believing and Knowing the Truth," "Affirming the Truth in the Church," and "Speaking the Truth to Caesar" -- Newbigin develops the argument that the Christian gospel is a statement of objective, historical truth, and all other modes of thought are to be evaluated in the light of the gospel truth. Directed especially to ministers and concerned laypeople, Truth To Tell consists of the Osterhaven lectures delivered by Newbigin at Western Theological Seminary in Holland, Michigan.

The Trial and Triumph of Faith

Samuel Rutherford - 1991
The account also gives us a vivid picture of what true faith in Christ is and how it acts. In Rutherford's words, 'To any seeking Jesus Christ, this text cries, "Come and see".'In twenty-seven eloquent sermons, Rutherford expounds the incident. What he sees in it most of all is the free grace of God: 'Christ, for this cause especially, left the bosom of God, and was clothed with flesh and our nature, that he might be…a sea and boundless river of visible, living, and breathing grace, swelling up to the highest banks…' Rutherford would have us observe here 'a flower planted and watered by Christ's own hand-a strong faith in a tried woman.'To encourage us to persist in seeking such grace, Rutherford explains both the trial and the triumph of saving faith.

By This Standard: The Authority of God's Law Today

Greg L. Bahnsen - 1991
This is where any discussion of God's law ultimately arrives: the issue of dominion. Ask yourself: Who is to rule on earth, Christ or Satan? Whose followers have the ethically acceptable tool of dominion, Christ's or Satan's? What is this tool of dominion, the Biblically revealed law of God, or the law of self-proclaimed autonomous man? Whose word is sovereign, God's or man's?Millions of Christians, sadly, have not recognized the continuing authority of God's law or its many applications to modern society. They have thereby reaped the whirlwind of cultural and intellectual impotence. They implicitly denied the power of the death and resurrection of Christ. They have served as footstools for the enemies of God. But humanism's free ride is coming to an end. This book serves as an introduction to this woefully neglected topic.

Jesus Christ: Fundamentals of Christology

Roch A. Kereszty - 1991

Though written as a Christology text on the graduate level, the book should interest any educated reader who seeks to know Jesus.

Common Ground: An Introduction to Eastern Christianity for the American Christian

Jordan Bajis - 1991
I (the author) make no attempt to persuade the reader that a proper understanding of these things is essential. I assume you already believe this. ( If you did not believe this, I don't think you would have bought the book.) But before many can penetrate to the core of the Christian Faith, they will have to hurdle the tall, and wide obstacle that presses in on them at every step: the biases of their own culture. The reader should be aware that this book has many limitations. First, this book is not a thorough exposition on Eastern Christianity but only a sketch of its vision. Second, I purposely do not outline every Evangelical and Catholic position Again, my main purpose is to describe the Eastern vision of Christianity, not offer a comparative review of it against every stream of the faith. And third, although the perspectives represented in this book are sympathetic to those of the Eastern Orthodox Churches, I confine my comments to that denomination's theology, not to its present government or practices (many of which ignore its own teachings.)

Robert Graves & the Hebrew Myths

Raphael Patai - 1991
The friendship between Graves and Patai began in 1947 when Graves, having read Patai's book Man and Temple, wrote him a "fan letter" full of remarkable scholarly comments and reflections. It was the beginning of an exchange of letters between the two authors that led to their participation in each other's books and studies, joint public appearances in lectures and interviews, mutual visits, and a lasting friendship. In addition to the nearly two hundred letters they exchanged that are published here for the first time, the book contains the full recorded texts of a long conversation between them about the Hebrew myths, a joint lecture in New York City, and a radio interview. It also includes the lecture Graves gave to the London Hillel Foundation on "Hebrew and European Myths Contrasted," and Patai's long essay on "Myth and Hebrew Myth," originally planned as an introduction to the Hebrew Myths but not published until now. The book discusses other writings produced by Graves and Patai and the reaction of the scholarly and literary world to their joint work and their major separate publications. Patai also allows a glimpse into the private lives of the two authors, including their struggles and successes, their frustrations and achievements. Robert Graves and the Hebrew Myths gives rare insight into the lengthy process of gestation that preceded the writing of the Hebrew Myths; the exchanges that led to the reconciliation of the two authors' different views and approaches; the meticulous care they invested in its planning, construction, and execution; and the production of the terse and dramatic presentation that characterizes the book. This volume is a unique account of a difficult but successful collaboration between two wri

Yearning: Living Between How It Is & How It Ought to Be

M. Craig Barnes - 1991
Advertisements tease us with dozens of ways we can be fulfilled. Many preachers and book promise Christian fulfillment. But in this surprising (and surprisingly liberating) book, Craig Barnes suggests we weren't created to be whole or complete. With a fresh reading of the early chapters of Genesis, he says that much of our pain and disillusionment arises from wrong expectations of the gospel and of life. Echoing comedian Bob Newhart, Barnes "would like to make a motion that we face reality." He candidly draws from his own experience as a son, a student, a husband, a father and a pastor to help us see what we all know but are so reluctant to say aloud--that biblical living will not save us from crises or unfulfillment. Barnes writes for anyone who knows that faith must be tough enough to "hold up in the emergency rooms of life." But he doesn't merely help us face reality. He helps us see how our needs and limitations are gifts, the best opportunities we have to receive God's grace. Because of that, Yearning may be the most honest and the most helpful book you'll read this year.

John Wesley - 1991
Covering the period from late 1743 through 1754, it contains four "Extracts" from Wesley's Journal (6-9) which document, in Wesley's own words, an important period of expansion and organization in the Wesleyan revival. He describes in vivid detail the spread of the Methodist movement in the north and west of England, as well as its beginnings in Ireland and Scotland. This period of growing social and political tension is marked also by Wesley's theological controversies with leading figures in the Established Church and his physical confrontations with riotous mobs in the countryside. His yearly schedule included extensive travel to visit the societies, and held the first conferences of Methodist preachers in England and Ireland to settle important matters of doctrine and discipline. He produced several key writings during that time, including three volumes of Sermons and two volumes of Explanatory Notes upon the New Testament. His writings in medicine were matched by the opening of a free public dispensary, and he continued to develop other social programs in education, child care, and finance for the poor. Features footnotes to quotations, key themes, and background information.

The Presence & the Power: The Significance of the Holy Spirit in the Life and Ministry of Jesus

Gerald F. Hawthorne - 1991
Yet Jesus taught with amazing authority, spoke God's word with extraordinary power, healed people who were sick, raised people who were dead, opened the eyes of the blind and did other miraculous things seemingly beyond the ability of humans. How? Hawthorne asks. Was it by means of his divine nature that he did all this, for certainly he was fully God as well as fully human? No, is his resounding answer. Through a careful study of the New Testament, Dr. Hawthorne argues that Jesus did not act from the prerogatives of one who shared the nature of God. Rather, he did what he did through the Holy Spirit, upon whom he depended for power and authority. Essential to this view is the affirmation that Jesus was indeed fully human. In the pages of The Presence and the Power, the author shows the role of the Spirit in Jesus' conception and birth, in his boyhood and youth, in his baptism and temptation and ministry, and in his death resurrection. Hawthorne brings his discussion to a climax by setting forth his own understanding of the mystery of the interworking of the human and divine in Jesus. This all serves to usher the reader into the final chapter, the role of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer. This concluding chapter makes the truths of the book very clear as to their life application for any and all of Jesus' followers.

The Dilemma of Freedom and Foreknowledge

Linda T. Zagzebski - 1991
Though all three solutions are rejected in their best-known forms, three new solutions are proposed, and Zagzebski concludes that divine foreknowledge is compatible with human freedom. The discussion includes the relation between the foreknowledge dilemma and problems about the nature of time and the causal relation; the logic of counterfactual conditionals; and the differences between divine andhuman knowing states. An appendix introduces a new foreknowledge dilemma that purports to show that omniscient foreknowledge conflicts with deep intuitions about temporal asymmetry, quite apart from considerations of free will. Zagzebski shows that only a narrow range of solutions can handle thisnew dilemma. A compelling contribution to the field, The Dilemma of Freedom and Foreknowledge will appeal to students and scholars of theistic philosophy and the philosophy of religion.
