An Essay on French Verse: For Readers of English Poetry

Jacques Barzun - 1991
Barzun’s many-faceted and entertaining study muses on six hundred years of French verse, its rules and forms and how they evolved. It also has significant sections on the French language itself, its sounds and difficulties; on verse music in language generally; on the character and achievements of the greatest French poets; and finally, on the social and political conditions that encouraged successive innovations, including the prevailing wordwide practice of free verse. The Essay, moreover, draws not only on a lifetime’s reading, but on personal reminiscences as well: of stuffy poetry lessons in the French lycée; of the poet Apollinaire expounding his views on language to amuse the child sitting on his knee; of the author’s great-grandmother telling him about proper French pronunciation, as it was in her youth, eighty years earlier. In sum, Barzun’s book goes a long way toward answering the question posed in 1917 by A. E. Housman to André Gide: How is it that every nation has produced poetry except France?

The Medieval Book: Illustrated from the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library

Barbara A. Shailor - 1991
Art historians also have considered illuminated manuscripts as important repositories for works of art. But in recent decades new interest has developed in the over-all physical format of the medieval book and its historical context - how manuscript books were made and how they have deepened our understanding of the intellectual and social milieu of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. One of the richest storehouses of early manuscripts is Yale University's Beinecke Library. Its collection provides the basis for Barbara Shailor's fully illustrated study of the medieval book and its place in society.Shailor first examines the manuscript books as an archaeological artifact of a period when mass-production was unknown and every volume had to be written and assembled by hand. She then groups books by genre - both religious and secular - to show how the contents of a volume and its function within society influenced its physical appearance and the way in which it was produced. A brief look at the transition from manuscript to printed book concludes the survey.Originally published by the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library in 1988, this work has quickly become an indispensable guide for scholars in a wide range of medieval studies.

Write Now The Complete Program for Better Handwriting

Barbara Getty - 1991
Write Now is being used nationally by the authors to teach seminars to physicians and medical professionals on how to write legibly. It incorporates the italic style which was developed in Europe about five hundred years ago as a practical and efficient style for everyday use, and is once again gaining popularity in schools worldwide. The italic style in Write Now uses simple, aesthetic forms that are natural and rhythmic, and satisfy the need for both legibility and speed. It contains clear instruction with numerous examples and requires no special equipment - a regular pen or pencil will do. The book is designed to lie flat when open to make writing in it easier, and includes blank, ruled pages in the back that can be reproduced for extra practice. Most of the styles taught in schools were developed in the 19th century and were designed using the ornamental copperplate engraving of that era as their basis. They abound with loops and flourishes and an extreme letter slope. Because of the rigors involved in mastering these shapes, it is often difficult to read. Italic avoids many of the pitfalls that cause illegibility, even when written in a hurry. There are no loops - only the basic letterform is used, with a slight, unexaggerated slope, making it extremely easy to learn and read. Italic handwriting encourages personal style without compromising legibility. Achieving a distinctive, readable hand is surprisingly easy and can be mastered in as little as fifteen minutes a day. You'll find Write Now easy to follow and full of step-by-step guidance and tips.

Euphemism & Dysphemism: Language Used As Shield And Weapon

Keith Allan - 1991
We ask for directions to the "ladies room" or convey the news that someone has recently "passed away." In fact, euphemisms have existed throughout recorded history: they are used by preliterate peoples, and have probably been around since human language first developed. And the same is true of offensive language, or "dysphemisms"--words used as weapons against others, or as release valves for anger and frustration. In this fascinating study, Keith Allan and Kate Burridge examine the linguistic, social, and psychological aspects of this intriguing universal practice. They cover the many shapes euphemism can take, from circumlocution and acronym to hyperbole and understatement, metaphor, and even technical jargon (many medical terms ultimately derive from euphemisms--stool, for instance, comes from "go to the stool," and diabetes comes from a Greek word meaning "to go a lot," since people with diabetes urinate frequently). They discuss the many euphemisms and dysphemisms for tabooed body parts (there are, the authors point out, at least 1,200 terms for vagina and 1,000 for penis), bodily functions, death, and disease. They describe euphemisms used to avoid religious blasphemy, from the archaic "egad" and "zounds" and "gadzooks" to the modern equivalents, such as "Jiminy Cricket" and "golly" or "gosh." They even discuss the political use of euphemism; for instance, when at war, to shield the public from upsetting details (or shield politicians from the voter), concentration camps become "pacification centers," bombing raids become "surgical strikes," and bombs dropped on our own troops become "friendly fire." (President Reagan, a master of euphemism, insisted that the attack on Grenada was not an "invasion," but rather a "rescue mission.") Along the way, the authors provide illuminating discussions of word origins, the use of bawdy language in Shakespeare, and many other fascinating topics. With thousands of examples drawn from speech, literature, newspapers, television, and film, Allan and Burridge invite us all to ponder and enjoy the creative products of the human mind as it confronts the problem of talking in different contexts about sex, lust, disapproval, anger, disease, death, fear, and God.

Morphological Theory: An Introduction to Word Structure in Generative Grammar

Andrew Spencer - 1991
Presupposing very little prior knowledge of linguistics, the book guides the reader from absolute basics to the most recent theoretical developments. Written in an accessible style, and including a wealth of exercises, this textbook is designed so that it can be used either on courses explicitly focused on morphology or as an adjunct to other courses, particularly in generative syntax and in phonology. The book opens with an account of the phenomena studied by morphologists, an outline of classical problems and an introduction to the earliest models of morphology proposed within the generative paradigm. Its second part deals with the interface between morphology and phonology and includes a detailed discussion of lexical Phonology, and related models, as well as a variety of types of nonconcatenative morphology. Part III begins with a comprehensive introduction to more recent theories of word structure, including inflectional morphology. Subsequent chapters examine the interface between morphology and syntax, exploring the processes which affect grammatical relations, such as passives and causatives. Further chapters examine compounding processes and the morphology, phonology and syntax of clitic systems. The final part of the book includes a full discussion of "bracketing paradoxes" and closes with a survey of models of morphology and competing views of the place of morphology in linguistic theory.

Kodansha's Compact Kanji Guide: A New Character Dictionary for Students and Professionals (A Kodansha Dictionary)

Kodansha - 1991
Something that would fit into a shoulderbag or briefcase, could be taken to class, or would sit unobtrusively on a desktop. Kodansha's Compact Kanji Guide is precisely that dictionary, designed specifically to meet the needs of the modern man and woman. It includes all of the 1,945 Joyo Kanji, the core kanji recommended by the Japanese Ministry of Education for use in Japanese newspapers and magazines. Knowing these kanji, the student can recognize virtually every Chinese character appearing in the daily press. And that is not all. The Guide also features some 18,000 kanji compounds, both those with Chinese readings (on-yomi) and those with Japanese readings (kun-yomi). These compounds have been carefully selected for practicality, usefulness, and timeliness. The living language has received exclusive priority, including such words as "Gulf War," "favoritism," and "statute of limitations." For those interested in securities, stocks and bonds, and the diverse terminology of the business world, related terms and jargon are clearly marked for easy reference. Simply open the book and look for the Yen sign. There you will find "current price," "aggregate market value," "issue at market price," and a great deal more. For those who want to write kanji, the stroke order of each and every character has been duly noted. But more important, the Guide does its utmost to help the reader locate the needed character. Aside from the traditional radical chart on the back endpaper, there are three invaluable indices as well. The first is by the reading of the kanji, either Japanese (kun) or Chinese (on). The second is by radical, but not by traditional radical alone. Also included are variants and near-misses, directing the reader precisely to the right page. The third is by stroke number--if all else fails, count the strokes and track the character down. With a copy of Kodansha's Compact Kanji Guide close at hand--with its definitions, stroke order, Chinese compounds, Japanese compounds, business terminology, and three helpful indices--the life of the typical student of Japanese should take a decided turn for the better. Features * 1,945 Essential (Joyo) Kanji * 18,000 Common Compounds * 2,000 Practical Business Terms * Three Indices for Finding Kanji * Compact for Handy Reference * Functional, Up-to-Date, Timely

Holism

Jerry A. Fodor - 1991
The authors consider the arguments that are alleged to show that the meaning of scientific hypothesis depends on the entire theory that entails it, or that the content of a concept depends on the entire belief system of which it is part. If these arguments are sound, then it would follow that the meaning of words, sentences, hypotheses, predictions, discourses, dialogues, texts, thoughts and the like are merely derivative. The implications of holism about meaning for other philosophical issues (intentional explanation, translation, realism and scepticism for example) are also explored. Authors discussed include Quine, Davidson, Lewis, Bennett, Block, Field and Churchland.
