A Modern Herbal, Vol. II
Margaret Grieve - 1971
Regarded simply as a history of flowers, it adds to the joys of the country." — B. E. Todd, SpectatorIf you want to know how pleurisy root, lungwort, and abscess root got their names, how poison ivy used to treat rheumatism, or how garlic guarded against the Bubonic Plague, consult A Modern Herbal. This 20th-century version of the medieval Herbal is as rich in scientific fact and folklore as its predecessors and is equally encyclopedic in coverage. From aconite to zedoary, not an herb, grass, fungus, shrub or tree is overlooked; and strange and wonderful discoveries about even the most common of plants await the reader.Traditionally, an herbal combined the folk beliefs and tales about plants, the medicinal properties (and parts used) of the herbs, and their botanical classification. But Mrs. Grieve has extended and enlarged the tradition; her coverage of asafetida, bearberry, broom, chamomile, chickweed, dandelion, dock, elecampane, almond, eyebright, fenugreek, moss, fern, figwort, gentian, Hart's tongue, indigo, acacia, jaborandi, kava kava, lavender, pimpernel, rhubarb, squill, sage, thyme, sarsaparilla, unicorn root, valerian, woundwort, yew, etc. — more than 800 varieties in all — includes in addition methods of cultivation; the chemical constituents, dosages, and preparations of extracts and tinctures, unknown to earlier herbalists; possible economic and cosmetic properties, and detailed illustrations, from root to bud, of 161 plants.Of the many exceptional plants covered in Herbal, perhaps the most fascinating are the poisonous varieties — hemlock, poison oak, aconite, etc. — whose poisons, in certain cases, serve medical purposes and whose antidotes (if known) are given in detail. And of the many unique features, perhaps the most interesting are the hundreds of recipes and instructions for making ointments, lotions, sauces, wines, and fruit brandies like bilberry and carrot jam, elderberry and mint vinegar, sagina sauce, and cucumber lotion for sunburn; and the hundreds of prescriptions for tonics and liniments for bronchitis, arthritis, dropsy, jaundice, nervous tension, skin disease, and other ailments. 96 plates, 161 illustrations.
Strongman's His Name...What's His Game?: An Authoritative Biblical Approach to Spiritual Warfare
Jerry Robeson - 1971
How to Wage Spiritual Warfare in the Last Days An important spiritual law was revealed by Jesus in Luke 11:21–22 and Matthew 12:29, “How can one enter into a strongman’s house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strongman? And then he will spoil his house.” Now, instead of “binding” symptoms, we can attack the sixteen strongmen or demonic spirits mentioned by name in the Bible! If God names them, they are real, and He has given us dominion over them through the Name of Jesus! In easy to understand language this book…Teaches how to zero in on and quickly identify the strongman in every situationIllustrates each strongman by a tree showing the fruits or symptoms for quick identificationInstructs how to bind the enemy and loose the power of God according to Matthew 18:18Provides instant recognition when and where Satan is attacking our lives and the lives of those around usShows that God wants us to be free from Satan’s hassles so that we can reach this world for Christ. Strongman's His Name...What's His Game offers a scriptural, balanced, and uplifting approach to present-day spiritual warfare.

It's for people who want to make their own clothing, play guitar, learn woodcarving, gardening, canning and drying food, and natural first aid methods. The book has no chapters; no rigid structures or rules. It grew naturally out of the lessons the author has learned, and which she shares now with yet another enthusiastic generation. Living on the Earth is a beautiful book to see and read, as well as a spiritually uplifting work whose simplicity radiates warmth and promotes serenity and goodwill to all those who encounter it. The large format paperback is entirely written in Alicia's cursive script and illustrated on every page with her line drawings. Alicia's innovative illustration and book design styles have been enthusiastically emulated in dozens of books and greeting cards. Alicia Bay Laurel has passionately followed her muse since early childhood. She was just twenty years old when Living on the Earth was originally published; the book would go on to become a best-selling, trend-setting manual for natural, conscious living. Conceptions of God in Ancient Egypt: The One and the Many
Erik Hornung - 1971
The renowned Egyptologist Erik Hornung here studies the ancient Egyptians' conceptions of god, basing his account on a thorough reappraisal of the primary sources. His book, now available in English for the first time, is the most extensive exploration yet undertaken of the nature of Egyptian religion.Hornung examines the characteristics, spheres of action, and significance of Egyptian gods and goddesses, analyzing the complex and changing iconography used to represent them, and disentangling the many seemingly contradictory aspects of the religion of which they are a part. He seeks to answer two basic questions: How did the Egyptians themselves see their gods? Did they believe there was an impersonal, anonymous force behind the multiplicity of their deities? Throughout, he attempts to evoke the complexity and richness of the religion of the ancient Egyptians and of their worldview, which differs so greatly from our own.A work of extraordinary distinction, Hornung's book will appeal to anyone interested in ancient Egypt, in ancient religion, and in the history of religion, as well as students and scholars of ancient history, anthropology, and archaeology. Sensitively translated by John Baines and with a new preface by the author, this edition has been amplified and updated with an English-language audience in mind.

The Psychiatric Interview in Clinical Practice
Roger A. MacKinnon - 1971
Better knowledge of the pathogenesis of acute ischemic syndromes has identified acute thrombosis as the triggering event in most cases. Thrombosis of large and small arteries may have catastrophic consequences as sudden death, myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, pulmonary embolism and acute limb necrosis. Fibrinolytic therapy is aimed at early restoration of occluded blood vessels thereby improving symptoms and organ recovery, reducing infarct size and subsequently improving quantity and quality of life. However, fibrinolytic drugs have severe, sometimes fatal side-effects. They mainly consist of bleeding, sometimes fatal cerebral bleeding. Therefore, stringent patient selection is mandatory: age, time to treatment, relative and absolute contraindications and comitant medication are of utmost importance for safe and efficacious fibrinolysis.

Natural Supernaturalism: Tradition and Revolution in Romantic Literature
M.H. Abrams - 1971
H. Abrams definitively studies the Romantic Age (1789–1835)—the age in which Shelley claimed that "the literature of England has arisen as it were from a new birth." Abrams shows that the major poets of the age had in common important themes, modes of expression, and ways of feeling and imagining; that the writings of these poets were an integral part of a comprehensive intellectual tendency which manifested itself in philosophy as well as poetry, in England and in Germany; and that this tendency was causally related to drastic political and social changes of the age.But Abrams offers more than a work of scholarship, for he ranges before and after, to place the age in Western culture. he reveals what is traditional and what is revolutionary in the period, providing insights into those same two forces in the ideas of today. He shows that central Romantic ideas and forms of imagination were secularized versions of traditional theological concepts, imagery, and design, and that modern literature participates in the same process. Our comprehension of this age and of our own time is deepened by a work astonishing in its learning, vision, and humane understanding.
The New Savory Wild Mushroom
Margaret McKenny - 1971
To ask why is to ask why fire burns. His credo may be stated thus: he has sworn an oath to keep his mushroom patches secret and to find and to poach on the patches of other hunters. When mushrooms are the prize, the scope of all his aspirations is narrowed to these two goals. Though in all else he may be as Saintly as St. Francis, in the pursuit of these ends he is more Satanic than Satan. He will betray his nearest and dearest without the slightest twitch of flesh or spirit. He is amoral."--Definition of a mushroom hunter by Angelo PellegriniThis classic field guide answers the amateur mycologist's two most important questions: "What is it?" and "Is it good to eat?" The Way Things Work, Vol. 2
Carel Van Amerongen - 1971
The Zodiac and the Salts of Salvation: Homeopathic Remedies for the Sign Types
George Washington Carey - 1971
Once this is understood, it is reasonable that the position of the Moon and ascendant in the natal chart and even the position of Saturn may well be indicators of homeopathic remedies that are needed by the physical body. For example, when an Aries is too quick to anger, perhaps a regular does of kali phosphate may even out the temper. Or when Virgo is beginning to feel digestive problems, kali sulphate may help balance out the minerals in the body. Nothing beats going to the doctor when needing a diagnosis/ however, knowing the basics of homeopathy can also be likened to keeping a first aid kit in the house. In Part I, Dr. Carey relates the parts of the body to the biochemical cellsalts (homeopathic remedies) that were espoused by Dr. Schuessler. Part II, by Inez Perry, enlarges upon the symbolism of the sun types and the basics about the homeopathic remedies. She discusses the twelve sign types in relation to Biblical symbolism, and also combines information from the Kabbalah, masonic texts, eastern and western philosophy, to trace the spiritual symbolism of the signs. She then shows how the twelve basic biochemical remedies work with the sign types. According to Carey and Perry, astrology deals with the body (anatomy) of the Grand Man (the universe), and by analogy, with the human body as it relates to astrological symbolism. The authors bring back to contemporary astrology students the ancient symbolism that was once common knowledge to astrologers.

Designs from Pre-Columbian Mexico
Jorge Enciso - 1971
As an inexpensive source of unusual themes, this volume is unparalleled. The designs were found on malacates, small clay spindle weights or whorls made by the pre-Conquest peoples of Mexico and discovered in archeological digs. The unknown artists showed great imagination and originality in decorating the essentially round objects, each with its hole at center. In the large outer circles appear motifs of the humanlike deities, animals both real and fantastic, reptiles, birds, flowers, masks, geometrical figures, wheels, foliage, maze-like patterns, frets—employed with all the boldness and fanciful ideas characteristic of pre-Columbian art.Rendered in sharp black-and-white, the designs may be reproduced, enlarged, reduced, or altered at will. Wherever a novel, strong, rhythmic effect is desired—in advertising, book design, packages, wrappings, labels, bookplates, textiles, wallpapers, leather craft, woodwork, jewelry, metalcraft—these motifs will serve beautifully. The designs were selected by Jorge Enciso, an outstanding figure in the cultural life of Mexico, from malacates in the archeological museums of Mexico City, Teotihuacán, and Tuxtla Gutiérrez, and the collections of Diego Rivera, William Spratling, Roberto Montenegro, and others.

The Making of a Cook
Madeleine Kamman - 1971
The Making of a Cook [Paperback]
Newtonian Mechanics
Anthony Philip French - 1971
Part I, The Approach to Newtonian Dynamics, is intended to serve two purposes. First, it does discuss the basic concepts of kinematics and dynamics, more or less from scratch. Second, it seeks to place the study of mechanics squarely in the context of the world of physical phenomena and of necessarily imperfect physical theories.Part II, Classical Mechanics at Work, is undoubtedly the heart of the book. The initial emphasis is on Newton's second law applied to individual objects. Later, the emphasis shifts to systems of two or more particles, and to the conservation laws for momentum and energy. A fairly lengthy chapter is devoted to the subject that deserves pride of place in the whole Newtonian scheme-the theory of universal gravitation and its successes, which can still be appreciated as a pinnacle in man's attempts to discover order in the vast universe in which he finds himself.Part III, Some Special Topics, concerns itself with the problems of noninertial frames, central-force motions, and rotational dynamics.
The Physiology of Excitable Cells

The contents of the book that was so successfully launched in 1971 are now appropriate to the challenges of the 1990s. The book is primarily intended for use by students of physiology, biophysics, neuroscience or zoology, and will be useful to those beginning research, and to scientists of related disciplines.

"The Lore of Flight" revisits the early designs of men consumed with the dream of leaving the ground: from generations of 'Bird Men' who tried (and died) to replicate feathered flyers; to two French paper-makers, Joseph and Etienne Montgolfier, who designed the first balloon to carry a man off the ground; to the most famous of aircraft pioneers, Wilbur and Orville Wright, and their wooden-frame biplane; to the designers of the jet-powered aircraft of today. Fascinating in its descriptions of the development of flight, this oversized book is a real eye-pleaser. Intricate and spectacularly-detailed illustrations abound: aircraft structures, landing gears, flying controls, flight decks, even 'cabin comforts' are laid out with manual-like precision. Cross-sections of gas turbines, armaments, fuselage, turboprops, powerplants, flight directors, and airborne systems break the miracle of flying down to its working parts. Readers are even led through the details of a typical flight and are provided with instructions for flying "general aviation" aircraft. 10 1/2" x 12". B&W & color illus

NASA Project Apollo - Where No Man Has Gone Before: A History of Apollo Lunar Exploration Missions (NASA History Series Book 4214)
William David Compton - 1971
How remarkable will be determined by future generations as they attempt to assess and understand the relationship and significance of the Apollo achievements to the development of mankind. We hope that this book will contribute to their assessments and assist in their judgments.Writing the history of Apollo has been a tremendous undertaking. There is so much to tell; there are so many facets. The story of Apollo is filled with facts and figures about complex machines, computers, and facilities, and intricate maneuvers—these are the things with which the Apollo objectives were achieved. But a great effort has also been made to tell the real story of Apollo, to identify and describe the decisions and actions of men and women that led to the creation and operation of those complex machines. The purpose of this book is only partly to record the engineering and scientific accomplishments of the men and women who made it possible for a human to step away from his home planet for the first time. It is primarily an attempt to show how scientists interested in the moon and engineers interested in landing people on the moon worked out their differences and conducted a program that was a major contribution to science as well as a stunning engineering accomplishment. When scientific requirements began to be imposed on manned space flight operations, hardly any aspect was unaffected. The choice of landing sites, the amount of scientific equipment that could be carried, and the weight of lunar material that could be brought back all depended on the capabilities of the spacecraft and mission operations. These considerations limited the earliest missions and constituted the challenge of the later ones. President John F. Kennedy's decision to build the United States' space program around a manned lunar landing owed nothing to any scientific interest in the moon. The primary dividend was to be national prestige, which had suffered from the Soviet Union's early accomplishments in space. A second, equally important result of a manned lunar landing would be the creation of a national capability to operate in space for purposes that might not be foreseeable. Finally, Kennedy felt the need for the country to set aside "business as usual" and commit itself with dedication and discipline to a goal that was both difficult and worthwhile. Kennedy had the assurance of those in the best position to know that it was technologically possible to put a human on the moon within the decade. His political advisers, while stressing the many benefits (including science) that would accrue from a strong space program, recognized at once that humans were the key. If the Soviets sent men and women to the moon, no American robot, however sophisticated or important, would produce an equal impact on the world's consciousness. Hence America's leadership in space would be asserted by landing humans on the moon. A program as complex as Apollo is not easily handled by a simple chronological account. In the early stages, from 1961 to roughly the end of 1966, the several phases of the program had to be hammered out more or less independently and many complex relationships had to be built. For those reasons I have organized the early chapters of the book topically, the better to deal in some detail with these early developments. 348 pages with photos and illustration. Dynamic Probabilistic Systems, Volume II: Semi-Markov and Decision Processes
Ronald A. Howard - 1971
The first volume treats the basic Markov process and its variants; the second, semi-Markov and decision processes. Its intent is to equip readers to formulate, analyze, and evaluate simple and advanced Markov models of systems, ranging from genetics and space engineering to marketing. More than a collection of techniques, it constitutes a guide to the consistent application of the fundamental principles of probability and linear system theory.Author Ronald A. Howard, Professor of Management Science and Engineering at Stanford University, continues his treatment from Volume I with surveys of the discrete- and continuous-time semi-Markov processes, continuous-time Markov processes, and the optimization procedure of dynamic programming. The final chapter reviews the preceding material, focusing on the decision processes with discussions of decision structure, value and policy iteration, and examples of infinite duration and transient processes. Volume II concludes with an appendix listing the properties of congruent matrix multiplication.

Renoir: Colour Library
William Gaunt - 1971
He worked side-by-side with Monet on the banks of the Seine, sharing his concern with light and colour, but landscape painting never displaced his enduring love of figure painting. A natural heir to the delicacy of Boucher, Watteau and Fragonard. Delighting in the ample curves of the nudes he painted increasingly frequently in his later years, Renoir was also a master at capturing the spirit of Parisian life. His art is filled with optimism –his lifelong philosophy was that he painted because it gave him pleasure, and he shares that pleasure with those who see his work. It is almost always summer in his pictures, and in paintings like Moulin de la Galette, The Dance at Bougival and The Luncheon of the Boating Party he gives us an enduring record of contemporaries relaxing and enjoying their leisure. In this expanded version of William Gaunt’s illuminating essay on Renoir (first published in 1962), Kathleen Adler has added notes to the plates and a wealth of black-and-white comparative illustrations, to make this the perfect introduction to the life and work of an extraordinary artist.

Over the Top! The Canadian Infantry in the First World War
John F. Meek - 1971
The book is considered one of the classics for those that study the CEF in the First World War, despite its limited focus on the infantry battalions. In the preface to his book, Meek stated that it would be an impossibility to tell the complete story of the Canadian Infantry in the First World War in a volume of this size. The book provides a summary of each of the 266 numbered battalions and named Infantry Battalions recruited in Canada for service overseas. Singular Integrals and Differentiability Properties of Functions (Pms-30), Volume 30
Elias M. Stein - 1971
They deal with real and complex numbers and their functions. In this book, Princeton professor Elias Stein, a leading mathematical innovator as well as a gifted expositor, produced what has been called the most influential mathematics text in the last thirty-five years. One reason for its success as a text is its almost legendary presentation: Stein takes arcane material, previously understood only by specialists, and makes it accessible even to beginning graduate students. Readers have reflected that when you read this book, not only do you see that the greats of the past have done exciting work, but you also feel inspired that you can master the subject and contribute to it yourself.Singular integrals were known to only a few specialists when Stein's book was first published. Over time, however, the book has inspired a whole generation of researchers to apply its methods to a broad range of problems in many disciplines, including engineering, biology, and finance.Stein has received numerous awards for his research, including the Wolf Prize of Israel, the Steele Prize, and the National Medal of Science. He has published eight books with Princeton, including Real Analysis in 2005.
