Based on a theoretical framework which has been tested in practice over 150 years, Bungay shows how the approach known as "mission command" has been applied in businesses as diverse as pharmaceuticals and F1 racing today. The Art of Action is scholarly but engaging, rigorous but pragmatic, and shows how common sense can sometimes be surprising.

The Way We're Working Isn't Working: The Four Forgotten Needs That Energize Great Performance

Tony Schwartz - 2010
The ethic of "more, bigger, faster" exacts a series of silent but pernicious costs at work, undermining our energy, focus, creativity, and passion. Nearly 75 percent of employees around the world feel disengaged at work every day. "The Way We're Working Isn't Working "offers a groundbreaking approach to reenergizing our lives so we're both more satisfied and more productive--on the job and off.By integrating multidisciplinary findings from the science of high performance, Tony Schwartz, coauthor of the #1 bestselling "The Power of Full Engagement, "makes a persuasive case that we're neglecting the four core needs that energize great performance: sustainability (physical); security (emotional); self-expression (mental); and significance (spiritual). Rather than running like computers at high speeds for long periods, we're at our best when we pulse rhythmically between expending and regularly renewing energy across each of our four needs.Organizations undermine sustainable high performance by forever seeking to get more out of their people. Instead they should seek systematically to meet their four core needs so they're freed, fueled, and inspired to bring the best of themselves to work every day.Drawing on extensive work with an extra-ordinary range of organizations, among them Google, Ford, Sony, Ernst & Young, Shell, IBM, the Los Angeles Police Department, and the Cleveland Clinic, Schwartz creates a road map for a new way of working. At the individual level, he explains how we can build specific rituals into our daily schedules to balance intense effort with regular renewal; offset emotionally draining experiences with practices that fuel resilience; move between a narrow focus on urgent demands and more strategic, creative thinking; and balance a short-term focus on immediate results with a values-driven commitment to serving the greater good. At the organizational level, he outlines new policies, practices, and cultural messages that Schwartz's client companies have adopted."The Way We're Working Isn't Working "offers individuals, leaders, and organizations a highly practical, proven set of strategies to better manage the relentlessly rising demands we all face in an increasingly complex world.

The Drucker Lectures : Essential Lessons on Management, Society and Economy

These speeches contained some of his most valuable insights, but had never been published in book form—until now.  The Drucker Lectures features more than 30 talks from one of management's most important figures. Drawn from the Drucker Archives at the Drucker Institute at Claremont Graduate University, the lectures showcase Drucker's wisdom, wit, profundity, and prescience on such topics as:  Politics and economics of the environment Knowledge workers and the Knowledge Society Computer and information literacy Managing nonprofit organizations Globalization During his life, Drucker well understood that over the last 150 years the world had become a society of large institutions—and that they would only become larger and more powerful. He contended that unless these institutions were effectively managed and ethically led, the good health of society as a whole would be in peril. His prediction is unfolding before our eyes.  The Drucker Lectures is a timely, instructive book proving that responsible behavior and good business can, in fact, exist hand in hand.

Hiring Manager Secrets: 7 Interview Questions You Must Get Right

Russell Tuckerton - 2010
The majority of candidates who purchase a full book on interviewing struggle to fully read and “digest” the material presented, making it hard to apply that hard earned knowledge in a fast paced interview. Without strong guidance on “what really matters” and “exactly how to respond”, books and seminars tend to not produce the desired results, and may not be effective in the long run in changing your interviewing behavior. The information in this book can be put to use immediately to improve your interviewing skills and help you get that next job.It represents the most popular job interview questions used by myself as well as thousands of other hiring managers when conducting interviews. It provides not only answers to difficult interview questions - but why these answers are the best interview answers so you can adapt your thinking to different types of job interviews.By providing both questions and answers to interview questions, you get the benefit of not only how I've evaluated and made hiring decisions, but also the type of information that positions you as the best candidate for the job. This list of common interview questions cover the most critical aspects of interviews I have conducted over 20 years - and understanding why the question is being asked, as well as seeing sample interview answers both good and bad will help you internalize and naturally learn how to respond to tough interview questions without having to think twice. The top interview answers are provided for each question - these are the answers that I used to decide to hire a given candidate for the job position. This insider's view of the interview process, from a real hiring manager, also gives you the top questions to ask during interviews - these are the questions that often position you far above other candidates, as they demonstrate your knowledge and interest in the company, the position, and focus on the right areas that managers are seeking. These questions are asked at a job interview greater than 90% of the time - I actually ask ALL of these questions at every job interview. While I may look for other job interview questions as well, these are the core 7 I consider to be most important for judging whether a candidate is going to be selected for the position.Spending 15 minutes with this guide, and re-reading it a few days later, will make you feel more confident about how to prepare for an interview.By providing sample interview questions and answers, and real world examples of good and bad answers, you can prepare for any interview with confident. Many of these questions are also duplicated by human resources when conducting phone interviews - common phone interview questions overlap these interview questions and answers often.

Building A Lean Fulfillment Stream

Robert O. Martichenko - 2010
In this pioneering workbook, lean logistics veterans Robert Martichenko and Kevin von Grabe explain step-by-step a comprehensive, real-life implementation process for optimizing your entire fulfillment stream from raw materials to customers, including two critical concepts: calculating the total cost of fulfillment and collaborating with across all functions and firms along the stream. Your company, like most, probably calculates costs at different points within departments, such as the piece price paid by the purchasing department. Few companies figure the total cost associated with each major function across the fulfillment stream. Calculating total cost, which to most executives is surprisingly large, lets you measure the impact of your improvement efforts on operational performance and overall income. Martichenko and von Grabe also give you guidance and tools for collaboration. Using the example company ABE Corp., the authors illustrate how the lean conversion process is a win-win for every company involved. And an accompanying analysis illustrates the financial benefits and shows you how to apply the metrics. The book, supported by 41 charts, maps, and illustrations, shows you: ? How to apply the eight guiding principles for implementing lean fulfillment. ? The seven major types of waste in logistics and supply chains. ? How a fulfillment-stream council of representatives from all companies gives critical guidance and support. ? The "eight rights" for assessing perfect order execution. ? What lean metrics to use, such as why average days on hand of inventory is a better measure than inventory turns. ? How to identify and eliminate waste in shipping, receiving, and yard management.

Kanban: Successful Evolutionary Change for Your Technology Business

David J. Anderson - 2010
It will allow you to avoid some likely pitfalls and it will guide you to asking, yourself and your clients, the right questions. Though many people focus on the visualization techniques in Kanban the true value only emerges when you, as a kanban system manager, are apt at noticing the anti-patterns that occur on the kanban board and are able to take appropriate actions. David generously shares his vast experience in this field, with plenty real case scenarios, to the benefit of the reader. After reading this book I toyed with the idea: Would I've changed my approach to coaching my previous clients, in their adoption of agile values and practices, had I read this at the time? Well, I certainly would have, for all of them, and I'm sure it would have meant a smoother change process for the agilely challenged organizations. David provides a comprehensive guide to implementing Kanban in a software development/maintenance environment. Covering the mechanics, dynamics, principles and rationale behind why Kanban is a so promising framework for managing the work of a variety of teams and groups and being an evolutionary-based change management driver. Kanban is the practical approach to implement Lean Software Development, and this book is the practical guide for how to start using Kanban, and how to adapt the system for advanced needs. The book is clear and flowing, even though it covers some quite technical material. I would recommend it to Development managers, Project/Program managers, Agile Coaches/Consultants. It addresses concerns/needs of Novice as well as those already familiar with Kanban and looking for advanced answers. Even if you don't intend to implement a kanban system, there are a lot of techniques and ideas that are easily applicable to any product development/maintenance environment, agile or not. Bottom line, highly recommended.

Beyond Naturalness: Rethinking Park and Wilderness Stewardship in an Era of Rapid Change

David N. Cole - 2010
But what does that mean, particularly as the effects of stressors such as habitat fragmentation, altered disturbance regimes, pollution, invasive species, and climate change become both more pronounced and more pervasive?  Beyond Naturalness brings together leading scientists and policymakers to explore the concept of naturalness, its varied meanings, and the extent to which it provides adequate guidance regarding where, when, and how managers should intervene in ecosystem processes to protect park and wilderness values. The main conclusion is the idea that naturalness will continue to provide an important touchstone for protected area conservation, but that more specific goals and objectives are needed to guide stewardship.   The issues considered in Beyond Naturalness are central not just to conservation of parks, but to many areas of ecological thinking—including the fields of conservation biology and ecological restoration—and represent the cutting edge of discussions of both values and practice in the twenty-first century. This bookoffers excellent writing and focus, along with remarkable clarity of thought on some of the difficult questions being raised in light of new and changing stressors such as global environmental climate change.

Memories

Russell L. Ackoff - 2010
Ackoff's Memories tell of his experiences of serving in the US Army during World War II; of bringing up a young family; of encountering different cultures whilst working abroad. From analyzing birth rates in India, to a fireside chat with the Queen of Iran, to introducing theme parks to the US, the stories collected in 'Memories' lay bare the workings of a number of well-known businesses and other organizations - and the people who run them. They describe common attitudes, behaviors and assumptions, which, if left unchallenged, can destabilize or even destroy an organization. This book shows how thinking systemically leads to real organizational improvements in a variety of academic and workplace settings and - just as important - how failure to do so can be both personally embarrassing and damaging to the organization. Each story is used to illustrate a belief, principle or conclusion central to Ackoff's theories of Systems Thinking and Design Thinking. And each of them is told with his customary generosity, wit and wisdom. With a Foreword by Peter Senge.

Performance Tuning with SQL Server Dynamic Management Views

Louis Davidson - 2010
Why, then, aren't all DBAs using them? Why do many DBAs continue to ignore them in favour of "tried and trusted" tools such as sp_who2, DBCC OPENTRAN, and so on, or make do with the "ready made" reports built into SSMS? Why do even those that do use the DMVs speak wistfully about "good old sysprocesses"? There seem to be two main factors at work. Firstly, some DBAs are simply unaware of the depth and breadth of the information that is available from the DMvs, or how it might help them troubleshoot common issues. This book investigates all of the DMVs that are most frequently useful to the DBA in investigating query execution, index usage, session and transaction activity, disk IO, and how SQL Server is using or abusing the operating system. Secondly, the DMVs have a reputation of being difficult to use. In the process of exposing as much useful data as possible, sysprocesses has been de-normalized, and many new views and columns have been added. This fact, coupled with the initially-baffling choices of what columns will be exposed where, has lead to some DBAs to liken querying DMVs to "collecting mystic spells." In fact, however, once you start to write your own scripts, you'll see the same tricks, and similar join patterns, being used time and again. As such, a relatively small core set of scripts can be readily adapted to suit any requirement. This book is here to de-mystify the process of collecting the information you need to troubleshoot SQL Server problems. It will highlight the core techniques and "patterns" that you need to master, and will provide a core set of scripts that you can use and adapt for your own systems, including how to: * Root out the queries that are causing memory or CPU pressure on your system * Investigate caching, and query plan reuse * Identify index usage patterns * Track fragmentation in clustered indexes and heaps * Get full details on blocking and blocked transactions, including the exact commands being executed, and by whom. * Find out where SQL Server is spending time waiting for resources to be released, before proceeding * Monitor usage and growth of tempdb The DMVs don't make existing, built-in, performance tools obsolete. On the contrary, they complement these tools, and offer a flexibility, richness and granularity that are simply not available elsewhere. Furthermore, you don't need to master a new GUI, or a new language in order to use them; it's all done in a language all DBAs know and mostly love: T-SQL.

Strategic Intent

Gary Hamel - 2010
Prahalad explain that Western companies have wasted too much time and energy replicating the cost and quality advantages their global competitors already experience. Canon and other world-class competitors have taken a different approach to strategy: one of strategic intent. They begin with a goal that exceeds the company's present grasp and existing resources: "Beat Xerox"; "encircle Caterpillar." Then they rally the organization to close the gap by setting challenges that focus employees' efforts in the near to medium term: "Build a personal copier to sell for $1,000"; "cut product development time by 75%." Year after year, they emphasize competitive innovation—building a portfolio of competitive advantages; searching markets for "loose bricks" that rivals have left underdefended; changing the terms of competitive engagement to avoid playing by the leader's rules. The result is a global leadership position and an approach to competition that has reduced larger, stronger Western rivals to playing an endless game of catch-up.

We need add nothing; rather, we uncover and then give up mistaken beliefs we have about ourselves and those we lead. When we drop our mistaken beliefs, we discover tremendous reserves of human ingenuity. Following his practical guidance, inner-work leads to elevated purposes, higher values, and simple principles that unleash organizational intelligence.Integrating the perennial spiritual wisdom, lessons learned by quantum physicists, and modern management principles, Brownstein offers us a lens through which we can see fresh possibilities for intelligent, wholehearted engagement beyond what we have dreamed was possible in organizations. Differences that Make a Difference: An Annotated Glossary of Distinctions Important in Management

Russell L. Ackoff - 2010
In Differences That Make a Difference-the last of his many books-Ackoff determined to distill the wisdom of a lifetime into a "glossary" that would be easily accessible to managers, employees, students, and academics alike. His aim was to dissolve (not solve or resolve) some of the many disputes in professional and private life that revolve around meaning and (mis)understanding. For example, development and growth do not mean the same thing. A cemetery or rubbish heap can grow without developing, whereas a person continues to develop long after he or she has stopped growing. Ackoff understood that getting to the bottom of differences like this one could have far-reaching practical consequences for improving our organizational health. In Differences That Make a Difference, he has succeeded magnificently in creating what Charles Handy in his Foreword calls "a manual for clear thinking." And if the world ever needed clear thinking...

Social Learning Systems and Communities of Practice

Chris Blackmore - 2010
It is likely to be of interest to anyone trying to understand how to think systemically and to act and interact effectively in situations experienced as complex, messy and changing. While mainly concerned with professional praxis, where theory and practice inform each other, there is much here that can apply at a personal level. This book offers conceptual tools and suggestions for new ways of being and acting in the world in relation to each other, that arise from both old and new understandings of communities, learning and systems. Starting with twentieth century insights into social learning, learning systems and appreciative systems from Donald Schon and Sir Geoffrey Vickers, the book goes on to consider the contemporary traditions of critical social learning systems and communities of practice, pioneered by Richard Bawden and Etienne Wenger and their colleagues. A synthesis of the ideas raised, written by the editor, concludes this reader. The theory and practice of social learning systems and communities of practice appear to have much to offer in influencing and managing systemic change for a better world."

Global Energy Governance: The New Rules of the Game

Andreas Goldthau - 2010
Three major trends—the rise of new consumers, the increasing influence of state players, and concerns about climate change—are combining to challenge existing regulatory structures, many of which have been in place for a half-century. Global Energy Governance analyzes the energy market from an institutionalist perspective and offers practical policy recommendations to deal with these new challenges.Much of the existing discourse on energy governance deals with hard security issues but neglects the challenges to global governance. Global Energy Governance fills this gap with perspectives on how regulatory institutions can ensure reliable sources of energy, evaluate financial risk, and provide emergency response mechanisms to deal with interruptions in supply. The authors bring together decisionmakers from industry, government, and civil society in order to address two central questions:•What are the current practices of existing institutions governing global oil and gas on financial markets?•How do these institutions need to adapt in order to meet the challenges of the twenty-first century? The resulting governance-oriented analysis of the three interlocking trends also provides the basis for policy recommendations to improve global regulation.Contributors include Thorsten Benner, Global Public Policy Institute, Berlin; William Blyth, Chatham House, Royal Institute for International Affairs, London; Albert Bressand, School of International and Public Affairs, Columbia University; Dick de Jong, Clingendael International Energy Programme; Ralf Dickel, Energy Charter Secretariat; Andreas Goldthau, Central European University, Budapest, and Global Public Policy Institute, Berlin; Enno Harks, Global Public Policy Institute, Berlin; Wade Hoxtell, Global Public Policy Institute, Berlin; Hillard Huntington, Energy Modeling Forum, Stanford University; Christine Jojarth, Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law, Stanford University; Frederic Kalinke, Department of Politics and International Relations, Oxford University; Wilfrid L. Sequencing: Deciphering Your Company's DNA

Michael Metzger - 2010
What made the difference was deciphering it. Like the human body, every organization has a DNA. What will make the difference is not seeing it, but sequencing it. It's the key to long-term success at innovation. Sequencing, written by business consultant Michael Metzger, explores what is required for a company to develop a culture that promotes innovation for the long haul. Harvard's Clayton Christensen reports that few companies have the capacity to innovate. The more success a company achieves, the harder it is for the company to innovate. And yet the reality is that companies innovate or die. Metzger outlines the steps necessary to sustain innovation - the culture, conscience, and C-level leadership required. It begins by having an accurate assessment of human nature and reality. Institutional leaders ignore this book at their peril.

Pay Check: Are Top Earners Really Worth It?

David Bolchover - 2010
It is a timely and powerful contribution to the debate about the corrosive effects of the banking bonus culture. I commend Mr Bolchover s work to anyone who cares about the future of capitalism. - Luke Johnson, Chairman Channel 4; Columnist Financial Times; Entrepreneur. There is, in my view, no better writer on the modern workplace than David Bolchover. With this book he has done it again. He has asked one of the questions that really matter. And the answer? Well, read it for yourself .. -Daniel Finkelstein, The Times Synopsis Who deserves what they earn? Seldom has this question been more relevant than now, as senior executives grab outrageous salaries while the companies they manage go bankrupt, and British parliamentarians fiddle their expenses. From jargon-spouting consultants to the financial whiz kids undertaking risky deals, oversized pay packets are justified on the flimsiest of grounds that the recipients possess extraordinary talent without which no company or organisation could prosper. But the evidence suggests otherwise. This book explodes the myth of talent, and shows how the term has been deliberately misused and abused. Pay Check aims to win capitalism back for those who actually take the risks, and expose those who merely snatch the rewards.

Managing such differences demands trust. This book brings together research findings on organizational trust-building across cultures. Established trust scholars from around the world consider the development and maintenance of trust between, for example, management consultants and their clients, senior international managers from different nationalities, different internal organizational groupings during times of change, international joint ventures, and service suppliers and the local communities they serve.
