Organic Reaction Mechanisms

V.K. Ahluwalia - 2002
It expands on the foundation acquired in chemistry courses and enables students to understand the mechanisms as they come across them in your classroom or laboratory.Organic Reaction Mechanisms provides extensive coverage of various organic reaction and rearrangements with emphasis on their applications in syntheses. The authors discuss reaction pathways, such as substitutions, additions, eliminations, oxidations, reductions, aromatic substitutions, aliphatic nucleophilic substitution, and electrophilic substitutions with numerous reaction equations to show the mechanism. The text also details the various reaction intermediates, including carbocations, carbanions, free radicals, carbenes, nitrines, benzynes, arynes, ylides, and enamines.Furthermore, the reagents are surveyed throughout the text, and correlation tables are provided to aid in identifying which oxidation/reduction agents to use for oxidizing/reducing various types of compounds. The applications of organic reagents are illustrated with examples and problems at the end of each chapter, which also serve to review the mechanisms learned and topics discussed. A comprehensive discussion on organic reactions, Organic Reaction Mechanisms will benefit advanced undergraduate and graduate chemistry students in their understanding and application of organic syntheses.

General Chemistry

Linus Pauling - 1970
Those principles included modern theories of atomic and molecular structure, quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics and thermodynamics. In addition, Dr. Pauling attempted to correlate the theories with descriptive chemistry, the observed properties of substances, to introduce the student to the multitude of chemical substances and their properties. In this extensively revised and updated third edition, the Nobel prizewinning author maintains an excellent balance between theoretical and descriptive material, although the amount of descriptive chemistry has been decreased somewhat, and the presentation of the subject, especially in relation to the nonmetals, has been revised in such a way as to permit greater correlation with the electronic structure of atoms, especially electronegativity. The principles of quantum mechanics are discussed on the basis of the de Broglie wavelength of the electron. The quantized energy levels of a particle in a box are derived by means of a simple assumption about the relation of the de Broglie waves to the walls of the box. No attempt is made to solve the Schrödinger wave equation for other systems, but the wave functions of hydrogen-like electrons are presented and discussed in some detail, and the quantum states for other systems are also covered. Statistical mechanics is introduced before thermodynamics, and the discussion of thermodynamics is based on it. This arrangement reflects the author's belief that beginning students can understand statistical mechanics better than chemical thermodynamics. Aimed at first-year college students who plan to major in chemistry or closely related fields, the book is written in a logical, clear and understandable style. In addition, many excellent figures are included, along with numerous problems and 75 pages of appendixes covering such topics as symmetry of molecules and crystals, hybrid bond orbitals, and magnetic properties of substances.

Microprocessors and Microcontrollers

N. Senthil Kumar - 2011
It also touches upon the fundamentals of 32 bit, and 64 bit advanced processors. The book throughout provides the most popular programming tool - the assembly language codes to enhance the knowledge of programming the processors.Clear and concise in its treatment of topics, the contents of the book is supported by learning tools such as review questions, application examples (case studies) and design-based exercises.

Power Generation, Operation, and Control

Allen J. Wood - 1983
Wood and Bruce F. Wollenberg presented their comprehensive introduction to the engineering and economic factors involved in operating and controlling power generation systems in electric utilities, the electric power industry has undergone unprecedented change. Deregulation, open access to transmission systems, and the birth of independent power producers have altered the structure of the industry, while technological advances have created a host of new opportunities and challenges. In Power Generation, Operation, and Control, Second Edition, Wood and Wollenberg bring professionals and students alike up to date on the nuts and bolts of the field. Continuing in the tradition of the first edition, they offer a practical, hands-on guide to theoretical developments and to the application of advanced operations research methods to realistic electric power engineering problems. This one-of-a-kind text also addresses the interaction between human and economic factors to prepare readers to make real-world decisions that go beyond the limits of mere technical calculations. The Second Edition features vital new material, including: * A computer disk developed by the authors to help readers solve complicated problems * Examination of Optimal Power Flow (OPF) * Treatment of unit commitment expanded to incorporate the Lagrange relaxation technique * Introduction to the use of bounding techniques and other contingency selection methods * Applications suited to the new, deregulated systems as well as to the traditional, vertically organized utilities company Wood and Wollenberg draw upon nearly 30 years of classroom testing to provide valuable data on operations research, state estimation methods, fuel scheduling techniques, and more.
