The Revelation of John: Volume 1

William Barclay - 1959
In his introduction he examines areas such as the characteristics of apocalyptic literature and the nature of Caesar worship. John was, as Barclay shows, soaked and saturated in the Old Testament, and most of the imagery he employs is drawn from that source. Barclay does more than clarify the meaning of the imagery. His commentary covers the central issues of the book, such as the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, the probable facts about John's exile on the island, and the meaning of Christ's knocking at the door. For almost fifty years and for millions of readers, the Daily Study Bible commentaries have been the ideal help for both devotional and serious Bible study. Now, with the release of the New Daily Study Bible, a new generation will appreciate the wisdom of William Barclay. With clarification of less familiar illustrations and inclusion of more contemporary language, the New Daily Study Bible will continue to help individuals and groups discover what the message of the New Testament really means for their lives.

The Great Ideas: A Lexicon of Western Thought

Mortimer J. Adler - 1959
Beginning with "Angel" and ending with "World," he set out to write 102 essays featuring the ideas that have collectively defined Western thought for more than twenty-five hundred years. The essays, originally published in the "Syntopicon," were, and remain, the centerpiece of Encyclolpaedia Britannica's "Great Books of the Western World." These essays, never before available except as part of the "Great Books," are, according to Clifton Fadiman, Adler's finest work. This comprehensive volume includes pieces on topics such as "War and Peace," "Love," "God," and "Truth" that amply quote the historical sources of these ideas -- from the works of Homer to Freud, from Marcus Aurelius to Virginia Woolf. These essays evoke the sense of a lively debate among the great writers and thinkers of Western civilization. It is almost as if these authors were sitting around a large table face-to-face, differing in their opinions and arguing about issues that are acutely relevant to the present day. Now available in a handsome Scribner Classics edition, "The Great Ideas" also contains Adler's own essay explaining why the twentieth century, though witness to dramatic discoveries and technological advances, cannot understand these achievements without seeing them in the larger context of the past twenty-five centuries.Adler's purely descriptive synthesis presents the key points of view on almost three thousand questions without endorsing or favoring any one of them. More than a thousand pages, containing more than half a million words on more than two millennia of Westernthought, "The Great Ideas" is an essential work that draws the reader into our civilization's great conversation of great ideas.

This monumental work is the first complete encyclopedia of world anthology. Originally published in France by the famous house of Larousse, it contains of course all the well-loved myths of Classical Antiquity. But more than half the book is devoted to the strange and unfamiliar mythologies of civilizations...from Peru to Persia, from Tahiti to Togoland. Nearly 600 Illustrations.

Waiting Father

Helmut Thielicke - 1959
Great scholars are often poor preachers, and great preachers are sometimes indifferent scholars, but the author of this remarkable book is both an outstanding scholar - a former rector of Hamburg University - and a preacher of world renown. This is great preaching; Biblical, relevant, urgent, reminiscent of Luther and of Kierkegaard. Thielicke's challenging interpretation of the parables brings them to life and gives them a new relevance for today.

Fruit Key and Twig Key to Trees and Shrubs

William M. Harlow - 1959
Next the various types of fruits are described — drupe, berry, pome, legume, follicle, capsule, achene, samara, nut — and fruiting habits, followed by a synoptic summary of fruit types. The introduction to the twig key tells in plain language the process of growth and its relation to twig morphology through leaf scars, branch scars, buds, etc. For the benefit of the unwary, poison-ivy, poison-oak and poison-sumac are immediately and fully described.Identification in both books is easy. There is a pair of alternative descriptions of each aspect of the specimens. Your choice of the fitting one leads you automatically to the next proper pair. At the end of the chain is the name of your specimen and, as a double check, a photograph. More than 120 different fruits and 160 different twigs are distinguished. This exceptional work, widely used in university courses in botany, biology, forestry, etc., is a valuable tool and instructor to the naturalist, woodsman, or farmer, and to anyone who has wondered about the name of a leafless tree in winter or been intrigued by an interestingly shaped fruit or seed.

Theory of Wing Sections: Including a Summary of Airfoil Data

Ira H. Abbott - 1959
. . much detailed geometric and aerodynamic data." — Mechanical EngineeringThe first edition of this work has been corrected and republished in answer to the continuing demand for a concise compilation of the subsonic aerodynamics characteristics of modern NASA wing sections together with a description of their geometry and associated theory. These wing sections, or their derivatives, continue to be the ones most commonly used for airplanes designed for both subsonic and supersonic speeds, and for helicopter rotor blades, propeller blades, and high performance fans.Intended to be primarily a reference work for engineers and students, the book devotes over 300 pages to theoretical and experimental considerations. The theoretical treatment progresses from elementary considerations to methods used for the design of NACA low-drag airfoils. Methods and data are presented for using wingsection data to predict wing characteristics, and judiciously selected plots and cross-plots of experimental data are presented for readily useful correlation of certain simplifying assumptions made in the analyses. The chapters on theory of thin wings and airfoils are particularly valuable, as is the complete summary of the NACA's experimental observations and system of constructing families of airfoils. Mathematics has been kept to a minimum, but it is assumed that the reader has a knowledge of differential and integral calculus, and elementary mechanics. The appendix of over 350 pages contains these tables: Basic Thickness Forms, Mean Lines, Airfoil Ordinates, and Aerodynamic Characteristics of Wing Sections.

A New Latin Syntax

E.C. Woodcock - 1959
The account of each construction is fully documented with examples drawn from the series of authors from Plautus to Tacitus. An attempt has been made to substitute, as far as possible, historical explanation for the statistical rules usually found in textbooks on composition which inevitably leave a litter of unexplained exceptions. The book aims to equip students to interpret texts as well as to write correct Latin, and the index of passages quoted may make it useful as a work of reference for teachers. The order of presentation represents a compromise between the order followed in exhaustive scientific grammars, which tend to deal with each construction in a watertight compartment, and that of the average text-book on composition, which bears no relation to the historical order of development. For example, the chapter on the independent uses of the subjunctive is put before those dealing with the subordinate uses derived therefrom, but the series of chapters on the uses of the cases is interrupted by a chapter on the infinitive and the accusative and infinitive of oratio obliqua. This is not done merely for the sake of variety, but to enable any teacher who wishes to compose his own exercises in composition to introduce indirect reports at an early stage.

Open Channel Hydraulics

Chow Ven Te - 1959
Covering both theory and practice, it attempts to bridge the gap that generally exists between the two. Theory is introduced first and is then applied to design problems. In many cases the application of theory is illustrated with practical examples. Theory is frequently simplified by adopting theoretically less rigorous treatments with sound concepts, by avoiding use of advanced mathematical manipulations, or by replacing such manipulations with practical numerical procedures. To facilitate understanding of the subject matter, the treatment is mostly based on the condition of one- or two-dimensional flow. The book deals mainly with American practice but also includes related information from many countries throughout the world. Material is divided into five main sections for an orderly and logical treatment of the subject: Basic Principles. Uniform Flow, Varied Flow, Rapidly Varied Flow, and Unsteady Flow. There are 67 illustrative examples, 282 illustrations, 319 problems, and 810 references. This classic textbook was the first English-language book on the subject in two decades. Open-Channel Hydraulics is a valuable text for students of engineering mechanics. hydraulics. civil. agricultural. sanitary. and mechanical engineering, and a helpful compendium for practicing engineers. Dr. Ven Te Chow was a Professor of Hydraulic Engineering and led the hydraulic engineering research and teaching programs at the University of Illinois. Through many years of experience as a teacher, engineer, researcher, writer. lecturer, and consultant, he became an internationally recognized leader in the fields of hydraulics, hydrology and hydraulic engineering. Dr. Ven Te Chow authored two technical books and more than 60 articles and papers in scientific an engineering magazines and journals. He was a member of lAHR, ASCE, AGU, AAAS, SEE, and Sigma Xi, and had been Chairman of the American Geophysical Union's Permanent Research Committee on Runoff.

Homeric Greek: A Book for Beginners

Clyde Pharr - 1959
This revised edition adds concise sections on grammar that will be of immense aid to the student who has not previously learned Latin grammar. With a judicious hand Wright has removed some extraneous commentary on the Iliad, but the essence of Pharr’s text–which has stood the test of time–has been left untouched.Pharr explains in his eloquent introduction why the ideal approach to the language is with Homer rather than with the writers of Attic Greek. The Homeric method has, indeed, met with remarkable success; Wright’s newly revised text will undoubtedly spark fresh enthusiasm in both students and professors of Greek. While this book contains more than the first-year student could easily master, it does not attempt to catalog “every stray Homeric form…. Its first object is to teach beginners to read Greek intelligently and with pleasure.”

Gourmet's Old Vienna Cookbook: A Viennese Memoir

Lillian Langseth-Christensen - 1959
Lillian Langseth-Christensen’s love for the cuisine of Vienna and her understanding of all its nuances shine through every page – as she confides the culinary secrets she learned first-hand from the good Austrian cooks she has known since childhood. The recipes range from the simplest peasant fare to the fancy pastries and confections that are the pride of the Viennese. Starting with the tantalising appetite-stimulators known as Vorspeisen (a liver pâté studded with almonds, for instance, or a mushroom soufflé over a tart of dilled shrimp), Ms Langseth-Christensen leads us on to steaming soups invariably ladled out of a handsome tureen (the most important item in a bride’s hope chest) – soups that are garnished with shredded pancakes or pigeon eggs or dumplings. Then on to recipes for meat dishes – always treated with respect and finesse. Then vegetables, usually a separate course, turned into tarts and puddings or embellished with capers, crumbs, cheese, wild herbs. The art of making noodle dough – the first culinary accomplishment a Viennese mother teaches her daughter – is carefully detailed, as are the secrets of creating at home all the wonderful cakes and pastries that Sacher’s and Demel’s and Gerstner’s have made world famous.Rich and immensely satisfying, this is a lovely personal cookbook that typifies the gemütlichkeit of the Viennese way of life – a book that will long continue to endear itself to new generations of cooks.

Words Of Science And The History Behind Them

Isaac Asimov - 1959
That alcohol is the word for an ancient Arabic cosmetic? That petroleum in Latin is “olive oil from a rock”? That a nucleus is a "little nut” or that deoxyribonucleic acid simply means . . . ? Well, read the book and see.The vocabulary of Science has always been a forbidding one, bristling with many-syllabled words and odd, unfamiliar terms. Now Professor Asimov has opened up this language to the ordinary reader by conducting an informal exploration into the roots and histories of hundreds of scientific terms. The result is a really fascinating book that combines a vast quantity of scientific information with an equal amount of language history. Even the longest tongue-twisters have simple origins if you go back far enough; and Professor Asimov makes each discovery of the origins of a word a sort of detective story that can’t fail to stimulate the reader’s interest. This is a perfect book to dip into again and again. Not only is it entertaining in its own right, but it is also a wonderful introduction to what should become the popular indoor sport of word-chasing. A complete index to the more than 1500 terms covered makes it a unique reference book as well.

Essential Spanish Grammar

Seymour Resnick - 1959
It covers the most important points of Spanish grammar in the clearest possible way, concentrating on the expressions that you would be most likely to use. All rules are illustrated with common phrases, and hints are included throughout the book on how to replace difficult constructions with simpler ones. All the major aspects of Spanish grammar are presented in logical order: vocabulary and vocabulary building; word order; how to turn a positive sentence into a negative one; how to form questions; nouns; pronouns; adjectives; adverbs; how to conjugate verbs in the major tenses; how to use auxiliary verbs; prepositions and infinitives; useful expressions; and vocabulary tips. One section is devoted to the definition of all grammatical terms used throughout the book. Not a simplified grammar, this is a selected grammar for adult use. It can be used alone, either as an introductory course or as a refresher, or as a supplement to a record course. Its cognate list of more than 2500 words which are either the same or nearly the same in Spanish and English offers probably the easiest way for you to build your vocabulary, for you will discover that you have already been using very many words that with a slight change in pronunciation are already good Spanish. This is the only place where this useful teaching device is available.
