Charles de Foucauld: Writings Selected with an Introduction

Charles de Foucauld - 1999
His ministry later inspired the founding of the Little Brothers and the Little Sisters of Jesus, which have made him an extremely influential figure for many Catholics around the world. The mandate of DeFoucauld's ministry was not rhetorical persuasion; he sought simply to be present and available to help poor people in the communities where he lived. His writings, which contain some poignant and loving descriptions of the people he lived with, are concerned primarily with advancing his struggle to imitate the person of Christ, and summoning the courage to share in Christ's sacrificial death. "We cannot possibly love him without imitating him," DeFoucauld wrote. "Since he suffered and died in agony, we cannot love him and yet want to be crowned with roses while he was crowned with thorns.... The Sermon on the Mount: Inspiring the Moral Imagination

Dale C. Allison Jr. - 1999
Dale Allison insists on the contrary that the full meaning of these chapters in Matthew's Gospel can be seen only in relation to the broader literary context of the Gospel as a whole, with its Jewish Christian orientation. Indeed, the Sermon and the moral imperatives it contains must be understood: 1) in relation to the example provided by Jesus' words and deeds elsewhere in the Gospel; 2) with reference to the community of believers that constitutes the intended audience of Matthew's Gospel; and 3) in terms of what the Gospel says elsewhere about the end of the age. The Sermon does not present a simple set of rules, perhaps only intended for a small and select group within the Christian community, but seeks to instill a moral vision and to inspire the moral imagination of all who would follow Jesus.

Larry Martin - 1999
Seymour, pastor of the Apostolic Faith Mission at 312 Azusa Street in Los Angeles, CA. Beginning in 1906, Seymour hosted a revival that spread the Pentecostal message around the world. He has been called the most influential black religious leader in American history. Born in 1870 in Centerville, Louisiana, Seymour's parents were both former slaves. His father was a union soldier in the Civil War. Seymour was reared in the poverty and oppression of the reconstruction south.Seymour left the south and lived Missouri, Indiana, Illinois and Ohio, usually working as a hotel waiter. He was converted in a Methodist Church and then joined the Church of God Reformation movement. In 1905, he encountered Charles F. Parham and embraced the Pentecostal doctrine.Arriving in Los Angeles in February 1906, Seymour was locked out of the church that had called him to the city to preach. In April, a Pentecostal outpouring led to the establishment of the mission on Azusa Street. Seymour spent his later years at the church in Los Angeles and traveling to spread the message. He died in 1922. This work looks at every area of Seymour's life and gives considerable attention to the revival that made him famous. The book contains 380 pages, has over 100 illustrations (including never before published photos of the mission), and an index. It is a must for anyone interested in the history of revival, Pentecostalism, Seymour, or Azusa Street. The Life and Ministry of William J. Seymour is Volume 1 in The Complete Azusa Street Library. Describing Species: Practical Taxonomic Procedure for Biologists

Judith E. Winston - 1999
Now, this definitive reference manual acts as a style guide for writing and filing species descriptions. New collecting techniques and new technology have led to a dramatic increase in the number of species that are discovered. Explorations of unstudied regions and new habitats for almost any group of organisms can result in a large number of new species discoveries--and hence the need to be described. Yet there is no one source a student or researcher can readily consult to learn the basic practical aspects of taxonomic procedures.Species description can present a variety of difficulties: Problems arise when new species are not given names because their discoverers do not know how to write a formal species description or when these species are poorly described. Biologists may also have to deal with nomenclatural problems created by previous workers or resulting from new information generated by their own research. This practical resource for scientists and students contains instructions and examples showing how to describe newly discovered species in both the animal and plant kingdoms. With special chapters on publishing taxonomic papers and on ecology in species description, as well as sections covering subspecies, genus-level, and higher taxa descriptions, Describing Species enhances any writer's taxonomic projects, reports, checklists, floras, faunal surveys, revisions, monographs, or guides. The volume is based on current versions of the International Codes of Zoological and Botanical Nomenclature and recognizes that systematics is a global and multicultural exercise. Though Describing Species has been written for an English-speaking audience, it is useful anywhere Taxonomy is spoken and will be a valuable tool for professionals and students in zoology, botany, ecology, paleontology, and other fields of biology.

A female drug addict who has overdosed on crack cocaine. An elderly woman with deep stab wounds to the neck. A two-year-old motor vehicle accident victim with blunt head trauma. For forensic pathologists, police detectives, and crime scene investigators, dealing with death and injury is a daily routine. But even after investigating thousands of drownings, shootings, stabbings, electrocutions, overdoses, and traffic accidents, most professionals in the investigative fields still haven't seen it all. Originally published on CD-ROM, the Color Atlas of Forensic Pathology addresses much of the basic information which forensic pathologists and other investigators deal with on a day to day basis. Packed with 780 full-color, captioned photographs, this atlas examines everything from time of death and decomposition, to identification, to causes of death from blunt trauma, firearm injuries, asphyxia, cutting and stabbing injuries, and more. The atlas shows the various causes of death and injury with case -- "visuals" to help investigators understand the work they perform. Indeed, with its exhaustive coverage, the Color Atlas of Forensic Pathology will provide investigators with valuable insight into the many different causes of death and injury they must deal with and how the manners of death are diagnosed.

Layayoga: The Definitive Guide to the Chakras and Kundalini

Shyam Sundar Goswami - 1999
    • One of the great works on yoga, available for the first time in the United States. • Full-color plates illustrate each chakra. With the growing interest in energy medicine in the West, the ancient Hindu tradition of chakra meditation has become increasingly important to both healers and spiritual seekers. While new to us, the chakras have long been studied in the East, with the spiritual science of layayoga having the profoundest knowledge of these energy centers. The fundamental aspect of layayoga is the arousing of dormant energy within the body through concentration and breathing exercises and the movement of this energy through the chakras to achieve supreme consciousness. Unlike kundalini yoga, which starts with the lower chakras and moves energy upward, layayoga meditation starts with the Sahasrara, the spiritual chakra that crowns the aura, and brings energy down to spiritualize each chakra in turn. Layayoga has long been viewed as the most comprehensive and deeply researched examination of the chakras available in the West. Its detailed, illustrated look at each of the chakras and the various meditations and mantras that go with them makes it a must for serious students of yoga.

Exact Constraint: Machine Design Using Kinematic Processing

Douglass L. Blanding - 1999
The comprehensive treatment allows you to explore the venerable but somewhat obscure principles of kinematic design (widely practiced in the design of precision instruments for well over 100 years). You get a unique and powerful set of rules and techniques to facilitate the design of any machine-of every type and size. A central technique is constraint pattern analysis, which enables you to visualize the constraints and degrees of freedom of mechanical connection as patterns of lines in space. Understanding these principles, collectively called exact constraint design principles, can lead you to unobvious solutions to design problems, as well as designing for lower cost and higher performance. The book is supplemented with many hardware examples, which allow you to: acquire a greatly enhanced understanding of how machines work, improve your ability to create innovative machines, and maximize your ability to analyze and understand complex machinery.

Fluid Mechanics

Alexander J. Smits - 1999
The author connects theory and analysis to practical examples drawn from engineering practice. Readers get a better understanding of how they can apply these concepts to develop engineering answers to various problems. By using simple examples that illustrate basic principles and more complex examples representative of engineering applications throughout the text, the author also shows readers how fluid mechanics is relevant to the engineering field. These examples will help them develop problem-solving skills, gain physical insight into the material, learn how and when to use approximations and make assumptions, and understand when these approximations might break down. Key Features of the Text The underlying physical concepts are highlighted rather than focusing on the mathematical equations. Dimensional reasoning is emphasized as well as the interpretation of the results. An introduction to engineering in the environment is included to spark reader interest. Historical references throughout the chapters provide readers with the rich history of fluid mechanics.

Seriation, Stratigraphy, and Index Fossils: The Backbone of Archaeological Dating

Michael J. O'Brien - 1999
However, even a casual perusal of the large body of literature that arose during the first half of the twentieth century reveals a battery of clever methods used to determine the relative ages of archaeological phenomena, often with considerable precision. Stratigraphic excavation is perhaps the best known of the various relative-dating methods used by prehistorians. Although there are several techniques of using artifacts from superposed strata to measure time, these are rarely if ever differentiated. Rather, common practice is to categorize them under the heading `stratigraphic excavation'. This text distinguishes among the several techniques and argues that stratigraphic excavation tends to result in discontinuous measures of time - a point little appreciated by modern archaeologists. Although not as well known as stratigraphic excavation, two other methods of relative dating have figured important in Americanist archaeology: seriation and the use of index fossils. The latter (like stratigraphic excavation) measures time discontinuously, while the former - in various guises - measures time continuously. Perhaps no other method used in archaeology is as misunderstood as seriation, and the authors provide detailed descriptions and examples of each of its three different techniques. Each method and technique of relative dating is placed in historical perspective, with particular focus on developments in North America, an approach that allows a more complete understanding of the methods described, both in terms of analytical technique and disciplinary history.
