The Lamb's Supper: The Mass as Heaven on Earth

Scott Hahn - 1999
With its unchanging prayers, the Mass fits Catholics like their favorite clothes. Yet most Catholics sitting in the pews on Sundays fail to see the powerful supernatural drama that enfolds them. Pope John Paul II described the Mass as Heaven on Earth, explaining that what we celebrate on Earth is a mysterious participation in the heavenly liturgy. The Lamb's Supper reveals a long-lost secret of the Church: The early Christians' key to understanding the mysteries of the Mass was the New Testament Book of Revelation. With its bizarre imagery, its mystic visions of heaven, and its end-of-time prophecies, Revelation mirrors the sacrifice and celebration of the Eucharist.Beautifully written, in clear direct language, bestselling Catholic author Scott Hahn's new book will help readers see the Mass with new eyes, pray the liturgy with a renewed heart, and enter into the Mass more fully, enthusiastically, intelligently, and powerfully than ever before.

The Renovare Spiritual Formation Bible

Anonymous - 1999
As bestselling author and the project's editor, Richard Foster explains, "When I first began writing about spiritual formation, the soul hunger in people was obvious and the resources meager. Since then, a publishing avalanche has occurred on the subject--some helpful, some less than helpful. But there has remained a huge gap; a gap that if not filled will seriously undermine all the gains that have been made. The gap I refer to is a resource for approaching the Bible through the lens of Christian spiritual formation."The Word of God is not merely a text to be mastered but a lifestyle to pursue. This unique Bible, spearheaded by bestselling authors Foster (Celebration of Discipline) and Dallas Willard (The Divine Conspiracy), integrates the spiritual disciplines into the Christian life by showing how they are central to the Bible's teachings and stories. The desperate need today is for a richer, fuller understanding of the relevance of Scripture for daily living. The Renovare Spiritual Formation Study Bible focuses on illuminating issues of spiritual formation throughout the Scriptures, providing a unique window into how we can become more intimate with God. More substantial than a devotional Bible, yet deeper than a study Bible, the Renovare Spiritual Formation Study Bible is poised to redefine what the Bible can mean for Christian discipleship. This unique study Bible will include several distinctive features: -An introductory essay explaining the paradigm of "The With-God Life," which views the whole of Scripture as the unfolding story of God's plan for how we can have anintimate love relationship with our Creator.-A series of fifteen "With God" essays sprinkled throughout the Bible laying out the progression of the biblical story of how God has, at each stage in history, been forming a people who can freely love both God and others.-Introduction and notes for each book of the Bible, explaining not only the historical and theological background, but also highlighting the main themes for spiritual formation.-Spiritual exercises for helping readers take the next step in incorporating what they encounter in God's living Word.-Profiles of key biblical characters emphasizing how they practiced and modeled spiritual disciplines and the "With-God life."-A "Spiritual Disciplines Index" that provides a glossary and Bible references for each spiritual discipline and key themes of spiritual formation.RENOVARE is an intrachurch movement committed to the renewal of the Church in all her multifaceted expressions.

The Difficult Doctrine of the Love of God

D.A. Carson - 1999
Especially since the overwhelming majority of those who believe in God view Him as a loving being. That is precisely what makes this doctrine so difficult. The only aspect of God's character the world still believes in is His love. His holiness, His sovereignty, His wrath are often rejected as being incompatible with a loving God. Because pop culture has so distorted and secularized God's love, many Christians have lost a biblical understanding of it and, in turn, lost a vital means to knowing who God is.The Difficult Doctrine of the Love of God seeks to restore what we have lost. In this treatment of many of the Bible's passages regarding divine love, noted evangelical scholar D. A. Carson not only critiques sentimental ideas such as God hates the sin but loves the sinner, but provides a compelling perspective on the nature of God and why He loves as He does. Carson blends his discourse with discussion of how God's sovereignty and holiness complete the biblical picture of who He is and how He loves. In doing away with trivialities and cliches, this work gets to the heart of this all-important doctrine from an unflinching evangelical perspective. Yet it does so without losing its personal emphasis: for in understanding more of the comprehensive nature of God's love as declared in His Word, you will come to understand God and His unending love for you more completely.

Divided into six sections, Provocations contains a little of everything from Kierkegaard's prodigious output, including his famously cantankerous (yet wryly humorous) attacks on what he calls the "mediocre shell" of conventional Christianity, his brilliantly pithy parables, and his incisive attempts to dig through the fluff of theology and clear a way for the basics: decisiveness, obedience, and recognition of the truth. Arguably the most accessible Kierkegaard volume to be published in decades, Provocations is a must for every serious reader. Indeed, the wealth of sayings and aphorisms collected in one of the sections is reason enough to buy the book.

The Inescapable Love of God

Thomas Talbott - 1999
According to the New Testament proclamation, he argues, God's love is both unconditional in its nature and unlimited in its scope; hence, no one need fear, for example, that God's love might suddenly turn into loveless hatred at the moment of one's physical death. For God's love remains the same yesterday, today, and forever. But neither should one ignore the New Testament theme of divine judgment, which Talbott thinks the Western theological tradition has misunderstood entirely. He argues in particular that certain patterns of fallacious reasoning, which crop up repeatedly in the works of various theologians and Bible scholars, have prevented many from appreciating St. Paul's explicit teaching that God is merciful to all in the end. This second edition of Talbott's classic work is fully revised, updated, and substantially expanded with new material.

Make Me an Instrument of Your Peace: Living in the Spirit of the Prayer of St. Francis

Kent Nerburn - 1999
Francis of Assisi. The Prayer of St. Francis boldly but gently challenges us to resist the forces of evil and negativity with the spirit of goodwill and generosity. And Nerburn shows, in his wonderfully personal and humble way, how we each can live out the prayer's prescription for living in our everyday and less-than-saintly lives. "Where there is hatred, let me sow love...Where there is injury, let me sow pardon..." Expanding upon each line of the St. Francis Prayer, Nerburn shares touching, inspiring stories from his own experience and that of others and reveals how each of us can make a difference for good in ordinary ways without being heroes or saints. Struggling to help a young son comfort his best friend when his mother dies, moved by the courage of war enemies who reconcile, being wrenched out of self-absorbed depression by responding to someone else's tragedy, taking a spirited old lady on a farewell taxi ride through her town-these are the kinds of everyday moments in which Nerburn finds we can live out the spirit of St. Francis.By incorporating the power and grace of these few lines of practical idealism into our thoughts and deeds, we can begin to ease our own suffering-and the suffering of those with whom we share our lives. And, remarkably, find a way to true peace and happiness by tapping into our basic human goodness. As we open our hearts and embrace his words, St. Francis "touches our deepest humanity and ignites the spark of our divinity."Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace.Where there is hatred let me sow love, Where there is injury let me sow pardon, Where there is doubt, faith, Where there is despair, hope, Where there is darkness, light, And where there is sadness, joy...In this beautifully written book, Kent Nerburn leads us into the heart of the St. Francis Prayer and line by line demonstrates how St. Francis's words can resonate in our lives today.

Using some of the commonly-heard misconceptions about the Catholic Faith as points of departure, Fr. Romero examines various key passages from Scripture, looks at historical documentation found in secular sources and, at the end of each chapter, presents quotes from the writings of the first generations of Christians to show that modern-day Catholic beliefs and practices have solid precedence in the beliefs and practices of the early Church.

The Evidential Power of Beauty: Science and Theology Meet

Thomas Dubay - 1999
Dubay explores the reasons why all of the most eminent physicists of the twentieth century agree that beauty is the primary standard for scientific truth. Likewise, the best of contemporary theologians are also exploring with renewed vigor the aesthetic dimensions of divine revelation. Honest searchers after truth can hardly fail to be impressed that these two disciplines, science and theology, so different in methods, approaches and aims, are yet meeting in this and other surprising and gratifying ways. This book relates these developments to nature, music, academe and our unquenchable human thirst for unending beauty, truth and ecstasy, a thirst quenched only at the summit of contemplative prayer here below, and in the consummation of the beatific vision hereafter.

Good News About Injustice: A Witness of Courage in a Hurting World

Gary A. Haugen - 1999
We wonder what we can possibly do in response. And we wonder where is the God of justice? Jesus, however, said, "Take heart! I have overcome the world." Gary Haugen sees the truth of Jesus' claim vindicated throughout Scripture, which portrays a God who rises up against injustice. He also sees this truth in the lives of sometimes little-known Christians who through the years have courageously confronted evil when they saw it. Here he tells stories of these witnesses of hope in a hurting world. The good news about injustice is that God is against it. God is in the business of using the unlikely to perform the holy, Haugen contends. And in this book he not only offers stories of courageous witnesses past and present, he also calls the body of Christ to action. He offers concrete guidance on the ways and means its members can rise up to seek justice throughout the world.

The Popes Against Modern Errors: 16 Papal Documents

Pope Leo XIII - 1999
Yet most of these errors have spread and today have filtered down to the common man... with the result that most people now take for granted many fundamental assumptions that are positively false! But almost from the beginning of these errors, the Popes spoke out as with one voice, inveighing against them. Today, as we see these errors bearing evil fruit, many thoughtful Catholics are returning to those Papal documents which condemned these modern errors, to examine what the Popes have said all along about them. Here, in one handy volume, are the best and most famous of those papal denunciations:   • On Liberalism (Mirari Vos). Gregory XVI. 1832.   • On Current Errors (Quanta Cura). Pius IX. 1864.   • The Syllabus of Errors. Pius IX. 1864.   • On Government Authority (Diuturnum Illud). Leo XIII. 1881.   • On Freemasonry and Naturalism (Humanum Genus). Leo XIII. 1884.   • On the Nature of True Liberty (Libertas Praestantissimum).  Leo XIII. 1888.   • On the Condition of the Working Classes (Rerum Novarum).  Leo XIII. 1891.   • On Christian Democracy (Graves de Communi Re). Leo XIII. 1901.   • Syllabus Condemning the Errors of the Modernists (Lamentabili  Sane). St. Pius X. 1907.   • On Modernism (Pascendi Dominici Gregis). St. Pius X. 1907.   • Our Apostolic Mandate (On the "Sillon"). St. Pius X. 1910.   • The Oath Against Modernism. St. Pius X. 1910.   • On the Feast of Christ the King (Quas Primas). Christ Alone

Rod Rosenbladt - 1999
In their estimation, anyone who stresses an exclusive, saving faith in Jesus Christ is at the least intolerant and, at worst, completely ignorant. Yet as Rod Rosenbladt shows in this booklet, there are numerous evidences that support the centrality and exclusivity of Christ. He draws on these here to affirm that even in the face of sophisticated theological attacks, God's Word–and Christ's unique claims–still hold true. In defending solus Christus Christians need not disregard the noble words or deeds of unbelievers throughout history. But there is One whose words and works stand far above all others, and whose entire existence proved His exclusive claims. And He deserves not only our worship, but our witness before a lost world.

Sexuality and the Black Church: A Womanist Perspective

Part Two studies how Blacks have responded to sexual myths and stereotypes by retreating into silence on the subject of sexuality. In this section, Douglas discusses the function and role of sexuality in the Black church and community, homophobia/heterosexuality and how Black sexuality is portrayed in Black fictional literature. Finally, she explores the importance of sexuality and sexual discourse to the Christian theological mandate and to Black churches.

A Sacrifice of Praise: An Anthology of Christian Poetry in English from Caedmon to the Mid-Twentieth Century

James H. Trott - 1999
Beginning with Caedmon (ca. 658-680), the poetry comes from the anicent, medieval, Reformation, and modern periods from Anglican, Roman Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox poets, as well as mainline and evangelical traditions. Because poetry is a vehicle of praise and exhortation, of meditation and understanding, these selections include every form and style of reflection and psalm, from private, personal devotion to hymns and epic forms with godly themes. In addition to the poetry, each chapter includes an introduction and time line meant to provide a background against which readers can better understand the intricacies and nuances of the poets and their work. Short biographical introductions to each poet are briefly introduced alongside their poetry. We who speak English have twelve centuries of Christian poetry behind us. It is a deep and broad stream of praise, frequently poured out by men and women who died for the faith in the midst of persecution. While the glory of God may have been diminished by sectarian motives of some poets, the channel of the stream has always been faith, an unbroken succession of men and women who have praised God. Thus while A Sacrifice of Praise may instruct those who write poetry, it is ultimately a hymnbook for all of God's people.

New Great Themes of Scripture

Richard Rohr - 1999
The original Great Themes of Scriptures cassettes were very popular. Now after twenty-five years of study and prayer and teaching, Richard takes a unique approach in this entirely new series.Instead of treating the Bible as a collection of isolated books, he treats it as one inspired theology. Woven through it he uncovers nine "prime ideas" that gradually unfold through both the Hebrew and Christian Scriptures: shame, and separation, vengance and victims, law, grace, the redefinition of power, mystery, fear, and intimacy, the paradox of the cross and the process of divinization or "mutual indwelling."Fr. Richard describes the Bible as a text in travail, containing not just conclusions, but a process which mirrors our own journey (three steps forward, two steps backward). In the three steps forward, Scripture always reveals that we are related to something infinite and that ours is an enchanted and trustworthy universe.Much of religion discloses human beings trying to become spiritual. We are already spritual, says Fr. Richard, our desperate task with the Spirit's help is to be more fully human. Our journey reveals the whole story of human history -- a story of transformation. Throughout history, human consciousness develops so that we can finally imitate and relate to a totally non-violent God.

Person In The Orthodox Tradition

Hierotheos Vlachos - 1999
Dealing with the concept of the person is a primary aim of Orthodox theology. It is a vital subject because all teaching about the person relates to man's very existence and has a bearing on man's salvation, but also on the resolution of various social problems. At the beginning of the book it is made clear that the person-hypostasis, as it is presented in Orthodox tradition and teaching, is very different from the analyses made by psychology and philosophy, because this is above all a theological subject. The Holy Fathers rejected the views of the philosophers and the methodology which they used, and spoke about the personal God who is Person par excellence. Reference is made to the theory and theology of the Holy Trinity, in accordance with which the Persons of the Holy Trinity have a unity of nature and distinct characteristics. The complete theology of the mystery of the Holy Trinity is set out with the reasoning behind it, but without dialectic and arguments based on logic, because God is experience and the subject of revelation. It is a fundamental mistake to confuse the theology of the Trinity with anthropology and sociology, and it is wrong for us to identify our own interpersonal relationships with the way of being of the Persons of the Holy Trinity. The chapter "The Saints, Bearers of Divine Revelation" stresses that it is impossible for us to understand the person apart from the persons of the Saints, who are the bearers of divine revelation, because they lived it "in sense perception and full reality" and attained deification, which is to say, they became true persons. This chapter also covers the theology and pastoral care of holy relics, which demonstrate the reality of triumph over death.

The Ordinary Path to Holiness: The treasure of Catholic spirituality re-presented for our times

R. Thomas Richard - 1999
I just today received the first print copies, and I am well-pleased with the quality and quick delivery. "Publishing" has now been redefined. The first edition/version of The Ordinary Path to Holiness was printed/published in 1999. In these 19 years, I see the need only being magnified as time progresses, the need to publish the great "secret" treasure of Catholic spirituality of the "three stages" or "ages" of spiritual life, and of the Dark Nights that must come. So many Catholics have never heard of this holy work by which God calls us toward and into His holiness! There are so many confused opinions about how one really grows in the interior life - erroneous opinions and ideas, or just plain ignorance. Thus my subtitle in this new 3rd Edition, to make the matter explicit, this book offers "The treasure of Catholic spirituality, re-presented for our times."

Wounded Prophet: A Portrait of Henri J.M. Nouwen

Michael Ford - 1999
Since his death in 1996, his stature has only increased; and his books, including The Inner Voice of Love, The Wounded Healer, and The Return of the Prodigal Son, have become cherished classics. For thousands of readers around the world, Nouwen’s influence as a teacher and author is considered equal to, or greater than, that of the century’s great spiritual writers, C. S. Lewis and Thomas Merton.Although Nouwen could be radically revealing about his personal thoughts and struggles, there are nonetheless gaps in our understanding of who he was. With Wounded Prophet, readers are given the first extensive look into this man who touched so many, not only through his own words but, most powerfully, through the eyes of those around the world who knew Nouwen best. While researching this compelling biography, BBC producer Michael Ford conducted wide-ranging interviews with Nouwen’s friends, colleagues, and family members. What he discovered was far more compelling than what he had imagined: Though Nouwen was indeed the generous and loving man many thought he was, he was also never able to find consistent peace in his own life. Tormenting him were profound feelings of anxiety, insecurity, and loneliness. This portrait gives an honest and well-balanced account of Nouwen’s life that leaves no stone unturned, investigating his childhood, his family, his sexuality, and his life as a priest and member of the L’Arche Daybreak community in Toronto.

John F. MacArthur Jr. - 1999
-1 Peter 3:15Scripture is clear about the fact that we must be prepared to communicate the truth of the Gospel when given the opportunity--and do it with the right attitude. But even when your tone is gentle and respectful, what, specifically, should you say when asked or confronted about your faith? And what is your overall responsibility to unbelievers as a disciple of Christ?Pastor John MacArthur responds to these very questions and more--with solid, biblical answers focused in four particular areas:* your attitude* your preparedness* the content of your answers* your priority in witnessingCombining a biblical study of evangelism, a rational defense of Christian beliefs, and a practical approach to evangelism, this book offers a well-rounded perspective that can help you gently and confidently give an answer for the hope you have in Christ.

The Nature of Love

Dietrich von Hildebrand - 1999
His books in the 1920s on man and woman broke new ground and stirred up fruitful controversy. Toward the end of his life he wrote a foundational book on love, The Nature of Love. He had in fact been preparing all his life to write this work; he was so drawn to the philosophical analysis of love that his students long ago had dubbed him doctor amoris, the doctor of love. This great work, the mature fruit of von Hildebrand’s genius, is now available for the first time in English, ably translated and introduced by the philosopher John F. Crosby, who had been a student of von Hildebrand. The Nature of Love is a masterpiece of phenomenological investigation. Not since Max Scheler’s work on love have the resources of phenomenology been so fruitfully employed for the understanding of what love is and what it is not. Previously von Hildebrand had distinguished himself mainly in the area of moral philosophy, but in this study on love a new side of his thought emerges. Von Hildebrand is here led into areas of personal subjectivity that he did not have the occasion to explore in his ethical writings. In a most original way he shows that the desire to be loved by the person whom one loves has nothing to do with selfishness; he shows that this desire to be loved and so to be united with the other person is itself a kind of self-donation to the other. Thus von Hildebrand resists the altruism that claims that one is selfless toward the beloved person only by willing the good of the other in such a way as to be indifferent to being loved in return. On the other hand, he equally resists the claim that the happiness of the one who loves is the primary motive of love. Von Hildebrand indicates the radically other-centered direction of love, while avoiding the pitfall of a depersonalized altruism. Thus he does justice both to the extraordinary selftranscende

Yours Are the Hands of Christ: The Practice of Faith

James C. Howell - 1999
He came to this world so we will be different. Often our spirituality seems invisible and mute to a hurting world. Many of us simply internalize faith out of fear, feelings of inadequacy or choice. A faithful response to discipleship's call, however, is both inward and outward. Through Howell's study, you'll find ways to apply faith to your daily life and make evident your commitment to Christ. By considering all that Jesus did with his hands as a teacher, a healer, and a compassionate servant, Howell challenges readers to be the hands and feet and love of Christ in the world. Christianity must become something real, tangible, something that pervades all that we are, writes Howell. It must become something we do. In our culture, for Christianity to have any meaningful future, we must get serious about a genuine lifestyle that is holy without being elitist, engaged with the world without being jaded or self-righteous, active and busy yet prepared to cope with failure.

A Private and Public Faith

William Stringfellow - 1999

Dialogue Between an Orthodox and a Barlaamite

Gregory Palamas - 1999
Barlaam was working on the problem of union between the Roman and Byzantine churches in the 1330s and actually acted as the representative of the Orthodox church. In his discussions, in which he repudiated the use of filioque (the addition to the Creed of the Holy Spirit proceeding from the Father and the Son), he argued for the unknowable and unapproachable nature of God. Gregory did not take kindly to what he perceived to be agnostic tendencies in Barlaam's thought, and he wrote a treatise about the procession of the Holy Spirit. However, it was particularly Barlaam's later attack on the hesychasts, a certain group of Orthodox monks, that led to a bitter debate between Gregory and Barlaam. Several basic issues were involved, centering on man's knowledge of God. The ideas that were defined in the debate by Palamas became crucial for the future of Eastern Orthodox thought.
