The Economics of Contracts: A Primer

Bernard Salanie - 1997
This popular text, revised and updated throughout for the second edition, serves as a concise and rigorous introduction to the theory of contracts for graduate students and professional economists. The book presents the main models of the theory of contracts, particularly the basic models of adverse selection, signaling, and moral hazard. It emphasizes the methods used to analyze the models, but also includes brief introductions to many of the applications in different fields of economics. The goal is to give readers the tools to understand the basic models and create their own.For the second edition, major changes have been made to chapter 3, on examples and extensions for the adverse selection model, which now includes more thorough discussions of multiprincipals, collusion, and multidimensional adverse selection, and to chapter 5, on moral hazard, with the limited liability model, career concerns, and common agency added to its topics. Two chapters have been completely rewritten: chapter 7, on the theory of incomplete contracts, and chapter 8, on the empirical literature in the theory of contracts. An appendix presents concepts of noncooperative game theory to supplement chapters 4 and 6. Exercises follow chapters 2 through 5.Praise for the previous edition:"The Economics of Contracts offers an excellent introduction to agency models. Written by one of the leading young researchers in contact theory, it is rigorous, clear, concise, and up-to-date. Researchers and students who want to learn about the economics of incentives will want to read this primer." -- Jean Tirole, Institut D'Economie Industrielle, Universite des Sciences Sociales, France"Students will find this a very useful introduction to the ideas of contract theory. Principles of Population Genetics

Daniel L. Hartl - 1997
In response to suggestions from students and instructors, the book has been trimmed more than 100 pages and rewritten with the goal to optimize its use as a teaching aid. It introduces the principles of genetics and statistics that are relevant to population studies, and examines the forces affecting genetic variation from the molecular to the organismic level. Integrated throughout the book are descriptions of molecular methods used to study variation in natural populations, as well as explanations of the relevant estimation theory using actual data. Chapter 1 presents the fundamental genetic and statistical concepts in population genetics. Chapter 2 reviews the types and prevalence of genetic variation in natural populations. This is followed in Chapter 3 by a detailed examination of the implications of random mating for one locus and multiple loci. Chapter 4 examines population subdivision and its consequences for the distribution of genetic variation among subpopulations, including the hierarchical F statistics used in estimating these effects. Chapters 5 through 7 deal with mutation, migration, natural selection in all its varieties, and the consequences of random genetic drift. Molecular population genetics, including coalescent theory, is the subject of Chapter 8. Quantitative genetics is covered in Chapter 9, from the standpoint of genetic variance and covariance components as well as with respect to molecular markers used to detect quantitative trait loci (QTLs). Applications of principles discussed in thetext are illustrated by numerous examples of worked problems, using actual data. Each chapter end, in addition to a complete summary, offers several problems for solution, to reinforce and further develop the concepts.

Writing Superheroes (Language and Literacy)

Anne Haas Dyson - 1997
In one sense, the book is about children "writing superheroes" - about children appropriating superhero stories in their fiction writing and dramatic play on the playground and in the classroom. These stories offer children identities as powerful people who do battle against evil and win, but they also reveal limiting ideological assumptions about relations between people - boys and girls, adults and children, people of varied heritages, physical demeanors, and social classes. The book, then, is also about children as "writing superheroes." With the assistance of their teacher, the observed children became superheroes of another sort, able to take on powerful cultural storylines. In this book, Anne Dyson examines how the children's interest in and conflicts about commercial culture give rise to both literacy and social learning, including learning how to participate in a community of differences.

The Shared Experience Of Illness: Stories of Patients, Families, and Their Therapists

Susan H. McDaniel - 1997
Even if we have avoided serious illness ourselves, we cannot escape its reach into our circle of family and friends. Illness brings us closer to one another through caregiving and separates us through disability and death, yet little attention has been paid to personal and family illness in psychotherapy. Rather, therapists tend to focus on the psychosocial realm, leaving the biological realm to other physicians and nurses. Susan H. McDaniel, Jeri Hepworth, and William J. Doherty invited therapists who work with individuals and families experiencing chronic illness and disability to describe clinical cases that illustrate their approach to medical family therapy. Contributors then were asked to share a personal story about their experiences with illness, and to explain how those experiences affect the way they work with their clients. Vivid case studies dealing with a range of illnesses, including cancer infertility, schizophrenia, AIDS, heart disease, diabetes, asthma, and multiple sclerosis, show how the therapists' own experiences of illness are relevant to their care of others-and how these experiences can be used to form a healing bond in therapy. Poignant, honest, and illuminating, The Shared Experience of Illness allows us to understand more fully the relationship between the personal and the professional.

Numerical Analysis

Walter Gautschi - 1997
The topics included in the book are presented with a view toward stressing basic principles and maintaining simplicity and teachability as far as possible. In this sense, the text is an introduction. Topics that, even though important, require a level of technicality that goes beyond the standards of simplicity imposed, are referenced in detailed bibliographic notes at the end of each chapter. In this way, the reader is given guidance and an opportunity to pursue advanced modern topics in more depth. Contrary to tradition, the text does not include numerical linear algebra, which is felt by the author to have matured into an autonomous discipline having an identity of its own and therefore deserving treatment in separate books and separate courses on the graduate level. For similar reasons, the numerical solution of partial differential equations is not covered either. The text is geared to a one- or two-semester graduate course in numerical analysis for students who have a good background in calculus and advanced calculus and some knowledge of linear algebra, complex analysis, and differential equations. Previous exposure to numerical methods in an undergraduate course is desirable but not absolutely necessary. A significant feature of the book is a large collection of exercises, both the kind that deal with theoretical and practical aspects of the subject and those requiring machine computation and the use of mathematical software.

Mechanics of Materials 2: The Mechanics of Elastic and Plastic Deformation of Solids and Structural Materials

E.J. Hearn - 1997
The way in which they react to applied forces, the deflections resulting and the stresses and strains set up in the bodies concerned are all vital considerations when designing a mechanical component such that it will not fail under predicted load during its service lifetime.Building upon the fundamentals established in the introductory volume Mechanics of Materials 1, this book extends the scope of material covered into more complex areas such as unsymmetrical bending, loading and deflection of struts, rings, discs, cylinders plates, diaphragms and thin walled sections. There is a new treatment of the Finite Element Method of analysis, and more advanced topics such as contact and residual stresses, stress concentrations, fatigue, creep and fracture are also covered. Each chapter contains a summary of the essential formulae which are developed in the chapter, and a large number of worked examples which progress in level of difficulty as the principles are enlarged upon. In addition, each chapter concludes with an extensive selection of problems for solution by the student, mostly examination questions from professional and academic bodies, which are graded according to difficulty and furnished with answers at the end.

Essentials Of World Regional Geography

Christopher L. Salter - 1997
This perspective has been prompted in large part by the almost worldwide financial crisis that began in Southeast Asia in 1997, swept much of Asia in the following year, and rocked Russia in 1998. The authors anticipate that social and political unrest and impacts on the global exchange of ideas, goods, and services prompted by this economic turmoil will have long-lived effects. Students, therefore, will benefit greatly from the currency of this text.

Mechanics of Materials Volume 1: An Introduction to the Mechanics of Elastic and Plastic Deformation of Solids and Structural Materials

E.J. Hearn - 1997
The way in which they react to applied forces, the deflections resulting and the stresses and strains set up in the bodies concerned are all vital considerations when designing a mechanical component such that it will not fail under predicted load during its service lifetime. All the essential elements of a treatment of these topics are contained within this course of study, starting with an introduction to the concepts of stress and strain, shear force and bending moments and moving on to the examination of bending, shear and torsion in elements such as beams, cylinders, shells and springs. A simple treatment of complex stress and complex strain leads to a study of the theories of elastic failure and an introduction to the experimental methods of stress and strain analysis.More advanced topics are dealt with in a companion volume - Mechanics of Materials 2.

History of Art, Vol 1

H.W. Janson - 1997
This newest update features a more contemporary, more colorful design and vast array of extraordinarily produced illustrations that have become the Janson hallmark. A narrative voice makes this book a truly enjoyable read, and carefully reviewed and revised updates to this edition offer the utmost clarity in contributions based on recent scholarship. Extensive captions for the book's incredible art program offer profound insight through the eyes of twentieth-century art historians speaking about specific pieces of art featured throughout. Significantly changed in this edition is the chapter on "The Late Renaissance," in which Janson offers a new perspective on the subject, tracing in detail the religious art tied to the Catholic Reform movement, whose early history is little known to many readers of art history. Janson has also rearranged early Renaissance art according to genres instead of time sequence, and he has followed the reinterpretation of Etruscan art begun in recent years by German and English art historians. With a truly humanist approach, this book gives written and visual meaning to the captivating story of what artists have tried to express—and why—for more than 30,000 years. Author Biography: Anthony F. Janson has forged a distinguished career as an author, museum professional, and teacher. He has written books, catalogs, and articles on a wide range of subjects from the Renaissance to the present day. He served as Chief Curator at the Indianapolis Museum of Art; the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota; and the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh. He has taught at three universities, most recently at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Dr. Janson took over authorship of History of Art and History of Art for Young People upon the death of his father, H. W. Janson, in 1982.
