Tao of Fully Feeling: Harvesting Forgiveness out of Blame

Pete Walker - 1995
Moreover, if you are a survivor of a dysfunctional family, it is a guide for repairing the damage done to your emotional nature in childhood. As such it is actually a sequel to my later book: Complex PTSD from Surviving To Thriving. The Tao of Fully Feeling focuses primarily on the emotional healing level of trauma recovery. It is a safe handbook for grieving losses of childhood. Whether or not you are a childhood trauma survivor, this book is a guide to emotional health. The degree of our mental health is often reflected in the degree to which we love and respect ourselves and others in a myriad of different feeling states. Real self-esteem and real intimacy with others depends on the ability to lovingly be there for oneself and others, whether one's feeling experience is pleasant or unpleasant. Those who can only be there for themselves or another during the "good" times show no constancy, inspire little trust, and are only fair weather friends to themselves and others. Without access to our dysphoric feelings, we are deprived of the most fundamental part of our ability to notice when something is unfair, abusive, or neglectful. Those who cannot feel their sadness often do not know when they are being unfairly excluded, and those who cannot feel their normal angry or fearful responses to abuse, are often in danger of putting up with it without protest. Repressing our emotions creates anxiety and stress, and stress, like most of our emotions is often treated like some unwanted waste that must be removed. Until all of the emotions are accepted indiscriminately (and acceptance does not imply license to dump emotions irresponsibly or abusively), there can be no wholeness, no real sense of well being, and no solid sense of self esteem. Thus, while it may be fairly easy to like oneself when feelings of love, happiness or serenity are present, deeper psychological health is seen only in the individual who can maintain a posture of self-compassion and self-respect in the times of emotional hurt that accompany life's inevitable losses, disappointments and unforeseen difficulties. Finally this book explores the nature and limits of real forgiveness - identifying behaviors and people who cannot authentically be forgiven.

It also shows readers how these principles can transform relationships, careers, finance, and health. By adopting the practical strategies that mental health experts Butler and Hope have developed over years of clinical research and practice, one can develop the "mental fitness" necessary to resolve one's personal and interpersonal challenges at home and work and to live a productive, satisfying life. The first edition addressed how to develop key skills to mental fitness (e.g., managing one's time better, facing and solving problems better, keeping things in perspective, learning to relax, etc.), how to improve one's relationships, how to beat anxiety and depression, and how to establish a good mind-body balance. For this new edition, Butler and Hope have updated all preexisting material and have added five new chapters-on sexuality and intimate relationships; anger in relationships; recent traumatic events and their aftermath; loss and bereavement; and dealing with the past.

Courage to Live Your Dreams Vol. #6

Les Brown - 1995
Now in this final lecture of a six-tape series, The Courage to Live Your Dreams, he tells you how.Side One:  You've Gotta Be Hungry."You've Gotta Be Hungry" is one of Les Brown's credos. It symbolizes a man who refuses to be defeated by life and its problems -- a man who is hungry for success and fulfillment. You'll see how Les Brown's story can be an inspiration to all of us. Conventional wisdom or so-called logical thinking tells us that the Browns of the world have little chance of overcoming their handicaps and environment to succeed in this world. But "logical thinking" doesn't always take into account a burning desire to achieve. That's what Les Brown had. That's what allowed him to overcome proverty, a tough environment, and many other problems to become one of the most successful speakers in the nation. You can get what you want by going after life with everything you have. All it takes is that same credo, "You've Gotta Be Hungry."Side Two:  Put It All Together. In this concluding lecture, Les Brown gives you one of the most inspirational messages you'll ever receive. It's a message of hope and optimism. It's a powerful affirmation of all the greatness you can bring to the world. It's a bold statement that says, "You can be anything you want to be if you'll only give yourself the chance." Les Brown puts all his ideas together in a way you'll never want to forget.

The Way of Woman: Awakening the Perennial Feminine

Helen M. Luke - 1995
Luke speaks with the power of a true sage on the issues of community, relationships, the women's movement, marriage and divorce, and mothering. Profound, graceful, and transforming, The Way of Woman is a true celebration of feminine worth."In this book, Helen Luke has rendered her lifetimes' worth of understandings about the unique nature of the feminine psyche. The spirit of the work is to be treasured especially because it is informed by her ninety years of inimitable life."--Clarissa Pinkola Estes, Ph.D., author of Women Who Run with the Wolves and The Gift of Story"For many years I've learned from the experiments and reflections of Helen Luke, one of the few authors inspired by Jung who leaves a strong individual contribution to a spiritually rich psychology. She was able to find a unique way through the polarities that get us all stuck: theory and personal insight, gender and a point beyond gender, psychology and spirituality, tradition and immediate perception, knowledge and wisdom. Better tos pend a day meditating on a single page of her writing than to read a stack of books for enlightenment." --Thomas Moore, author of Care of the Soul, Soul Mates, and Meditations"In the Book of Proverbs it is written: 'Say to wisdom, you are my sister, and call insight your intimate friend.' Helen M. Luke was such a sister and such a friend. In The Way of Woman one is honored to be in the presence of a true Wise Woman."--Jonathan Cott, author of Isis and Osiris, The Search for Omm Sety, and Pipers at the Gates of Dawn"Helen Luke can strike one note with one finger with such sensitivity that is resonates forever in our soul... On behalf of countless women and men, I say, 'Thank you, Helen. Thank you for guiding me to the courage of my own feminine depths. Thank you for strengthening me in finding my feminine voice. Thank you for steadfastly living the feminine values in a society that, consciously and unconsciously, despises them. Thank you for encouraging me to go where I might never have dared go alone. And thank you for shining the light into corridors where I have yet to go."--Marion Woodman, author of Leaving My Father's House, from her foreword

The Christmas Crib That God Made

Henry Hernandez - 1995
It was written primarily for grown-ups, as long as they are able to behave like children in front of the crib.It isn’t quite the kind of book that one normally comes across. Its author, who is the first to recognise this, assures us that the ones to blame are the kindergarten girls at his school, who forced him to become a story teller. From the very beginning the reader recognises that the crib is a marvellous work of art with which God wished to crown the world even before he created it. We have in our hands a divine play, in which God makes use of everything he has created: from a star which fulfills its majestic role, to the donkey who has to play its own part, which is just as necessary. And since the stage is universal, we too have a particular role. And it is now that the script begins to awaken in us the part we too can play. Henry Hernandez, as a narrator, clearly shows that poetic reasoning can be much more enlightening pure reason when it comes to relating a story as moving as The Christmas Crib that God made.Henry Hernandez was born in Bilbao, Spain in 1941. He graduated in Law (1963) and then obtained a doctorate in Theology (1968). He was ordained in 1969 for the Opus Dei Prelature. Since then his pastoral work has almost exclusively been as chaplain to university students and to schools.

The Emotional Rape Syndrome: How to Avoid and Survive It

Michael Fox - 1995
Date rape involves the sexual use of someone's body without consent. In a like manner, emotional rape is the use of someone's higher emotions, such as love, without consent. However, in the case of emotional rape the lack of consent is contained in what the perpetrator doesn't say... his or her hidden agenda. Emotional rape is common in, but not limited to, male/female relationships. Victims of emotional rape can be both men and women. Both forms of rape can be very devastating and require specialized programs for recovery.Several major obstacles are encountered in recovery from emotional rape. The first is that the victim knows that something bad happened, but doesn't know what or why. And as in date rape, a big issue is that of trust. Victims often feel that they will never be able to love or trust anyone again. Other obstacles to recovery, again similar to date rape, are the re-victimization of the victim by friends, family, and society and the subsequent tendencies toward self-blame and silence about what happened. The book addresses these concerns as well as many more in the five chapters on recovery.Sexual Rape is a violation of someone's body - Emotional Rape is a violation of the human soulThis book is about identifying, preventing and healing emotional rape. It's about telling victims that they didn't do anything morally wrong - that they are not to blame for what happened to the and that recovery is possible. It's about telling victims how they can recover - to become survivors.Only after this underrated trauma is properly identified can survivors begin to heal their wounds. Only when it is discussed honestly and openly can we, as individuals and as a society, act effectively to prevent the spread of this destructive behavior.

Native Wisdom for White Minds

Anne Wilson Schaef - 1995
White minds are trapped in a closed system of thinking that sees life in black and white, either/or terms; they are hierarchical and mechanistic; they see nature as a force to be tamed and people as objects to be controlled with no regard for the future. This worldview is not shared by most Native Peoples, and in this provocative book, Anne Wilson Schaef shares the richness poured out to her by Native Americans, Aborigines, Africans, Maoris, and others. In the words of Native Peoples themselves, we come to understand Native ideas about our earth, spirituality, family, work, loneliness, and change. For in every area of our lives we have the capacity to transcend our white minds--we simply need to listen with open hearts and open minds to other voices, other perceptions, other cultures.Anne Wilson Schaef often heard Elders from a wide variety of Native Peoples say, "Our legends tell us that a time will come when our wisdom and way of living will be necessary to save the planet, and that time is now." Anyone ready to move from feeling separate to a profound sense of connectedness, from the personal to the global, will find the path in this mind-expanding, deeply spiritual book.

The Alchemy of Love and Sex

Lee Lozowick - 1995
Lozowick provides straightforward but not always comfortable or polite advice for those seeking clarity in their spiritual exploration. This nonfiction consciousness-expanding book may reveal to you just how liberal you are--or aren't--about your sexuality. Far more than a sex manual, Lee Lozowick's eye-opening text discusses such tangential issues as having passion for all aspects of life, the elements of a truly sacred marriage, and the balance of the Masculine and the Feminine in each individual, among other subjects. But be prepared: the author goes after common Western notions of sexuality with an axe! You may love this book or hate it, challenge it or be challenged, but either way, you will take a new look at the old story of love.

Life Beyond Death: Selected Lectures

Rudolf Steiner - 1995
Rudolf Steiner, as an exceptional seer, was able to research spiritually the question of what happens to human consciousness after the physical body passes away. In these remarkably matter-of-fact lectures, he affirms that life continues beyond death. Far from being dissipated, the individual's consciousness awakens to a new reality, beginning a great journey to the farthest expanses of the cosmos. One's consciousness embarks on a journey and process of purification and preparation. Steiner indicates that one of the most important tasks for our present civilization is to reestablish living connections with those who have died. He gives suggestions as to how this can be done safely and describes how the dead can be of help to those on Earth. Life Beyond Death is an ideal introduction to the spiritual scientific views of our continuing journey.

The Happy Mutant Handbook

Mark Frauenfelder - 1995
In the right hands, this is a delightfully subversive manual for a lifetime of fun. This is the do-it-yourself handbook for enjoying our media-saturated world by tinkering with how it works. Pulls together the kookiest and most engaging ideas from the Internet, great suggestions on "culture jamming" (a practice of co-opting the resources, messages, and brain-washing machinery of existing media, pioneered by Adbusters magazine), and generally jam-packed with loads of fun ideas and funny material. Notable contributors include Bruce Sterling, Rudy Rucker, R.U. Sirius, Richard Kadrey, and that most prolific of all authors, Anonymous. (Editor's note: In some ways, the Happy Mutant philosophy is the cyberspawn of the behavioral shenanigans of the Dadaists, Surrealists, or the lesser-known but more interesting Situationists. )

Trauma and Transformation: Growing in the Aftermath of Suffering

Richard G. Tedeschi - 1995
This book fills the gap: the authors use a cognitive framework to explore this finding, focusing upon changes in belief systems reported by trauma survivors.Tedeschi and Calhoun weave together literature from fields as diverse as philosophy, religion and psychology, and incorporate major research findings into the effect of trauma. With case examples from the authors′ research and clinical work, information is presented in a manner accessible to clinicians. In addition, one chapter is written specifically for trauma survivors.

Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ

Daniel Goleman - 1995
Daniel Goleman's brilliant report from the frontiers of psychology and neuroscience offers startling new insight into our "two minds"—the rational and the emotional—and how they together shape our destiny.Through vivid examples, Goleman delineates the five crucial skills of emotional intelligence, and shows how they determine our success in relationships, work, and even our physical well-being. What emerges is an entirely new way to talk about being smart. The best news is that "emotional literacy" is not fixed early in life. Every parent, every teacher, every business leader, and everyone interested in a more civil society, has a stake in this compelling vision of human possibility. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Knowing Christianity

J.I. Packer - 1995
    I. Packer turns our attention to realities far larger and longer-lasting than anything our self-absorbed society can offer. In this book he lays out before us his grandest panorama yet of the magnificent landscape we call the Christian faith. He begins with the only proper foundation for spiritual experience--the central doctrines of God, the Bible, Christ and the Holy Spirit. From here he leads us to the principal elements of the Christian life--growth in Christ, prayer to our Father, worship of our God, fellowship with other believers and our responsibilities as citizens. His sweeping survey of this spiritual terrain concludes appropriately with a consideration of the ultimate end of our existence here on earth--the reality of an afterlife, God's judgment and our reign with the ascended Christ. While spiritual fads fade from the scene as quickly as they arise, here is the lasting, unchanging truth of the God who has been our help in ages past and will be our hope for years to come.

Power Behind Your Eyes

Robert-Michael Kaplan - 1995
Any vision problem is a message alerting us to an unbalanced inner state. Eyeglasses, medications, and surgery may correct poor vision but they cannot correct this inner imbalance. More comprehensive than other vision care techniques, Integrated Vision Therapy takes a holistic approach to identifying the causes of vision problems and developing noninvasive, natural strategies for treatment, including clear, easy-to-follow exercises, diets, and changes in daily habits.
