Language in Literature

Roman Jakobson - 1988
Brown has written, "and the effects of his genius have been felt in many fields: linguistics, semiotics, art, structural anthropology, and, of course, literature." At every stage in his odyssey from Moscow to Prague to Denmark and then to the United States, he formed collaborative efforts that changed the very nature of each discipline he touched. This book is the first comprehensive presentation in English of Jakobson's major essays on the intertwining of language and literature: here the reader will learn how it was that Jakobson became legendary.Jakobson reveals himself as one of the great explorers of literary art in our day--a critic who revealed the avant-garde thrust of even the most worked-over poets, such as Shakespeare and Pushkin, and enabled the reader to see them as the innovators they were. Jakobson takes the reader from literature to grammar and then back again, letting points of structural detail throw a sharp light on the underlying form and linking thereby the most disparate realms into a coherent whole. In his essays we can also learn to appreciate his search for a fully systematic, nonmetaphysical understanding of the workings of literature: Jakobson made possible a deep structural analysis that did not exist before.Among the essential items in this collection are such classics as "Linguistics and Poetics" and "On a Generation That Squandered Its Poets" and illuminations of Baudelaire, Yeats, Turgenev, Pasternak, and Blake, as well as the famous pieces on Shakespeare and Pushkin. The essays include fundamental theoretical statements, structural analyses of individual poems, explorations of the connections between poetry and experience, and semiotic perspectives on the structure of verbal and nonverbal art. This will become a basic book for contemplating the function of language in literature--a project that will continue to engross the keenest readers.

Anyone interested in the history of physics and its language would enjoy reading this book.

The Poetics of Ascent: Theories of Language in a Rabbinic Ascent Text

Naomi Janowitz - 1988
Through a complex dialogue, a rabbi-teacher reveals to his student the techniques of ascent, methods for traveling up through the heavens by means of recitation of hymns. The teacher gives vivid descriptions of the heavenly realm, filled with flaming chariots and a chorus of angels engaged in praising the deity. The emphasis in the text is on language, on the correct recitation of the words to achieve the ritual. The particular focus is on the divine Name, which can be employed in unusual ways. The author relates the structures of the text to the linguistic idealogies. The complex structures of the text begin to unfold in light of the theories about the ritual function of language. The hymns include praise of the deity and voces magicae, words that have no semantic meaning, but draw attention to sounds of letters in God's name. Since God's name is used to create the world, the sounds of the name are creative, but the Name cannot be spoken. The hymns create a multiplicity of Name-equivalents, words that have the functional status of the divine Name and which can be employed in ritual. Voces magicae are not so much nonsense as they are logical extensions of the linguistic theory. The final chapter surveys recent theories of ritual language and then uses the conclusions from the study to refine the general issue of the relationship between the semantic meaning of words and their ritual efficacy. The dialogic structure of the text permits the reader to become the next student in a chain going back to the deity by means of Moses.

Why Scots Matters

J. Derrick McClure - 1988
Why Scots Matters details the origins and history of the language, and discusses the influences and events which have shaped its use. Derrick McClure's work encompasses the differences between dialect and language, and the great works of literature written in Scots - Barbour's Bruce, James I's Kingis Quair, the superb poetry of Henryson and Dunbar, Lindsay's triumphal Ane Satire of the Thrie Estaitis and, of course, the work of Robert Burns and Hugh McDiarmid. The importance of Scots as a record of political and social change is also examined, as the influence of the Norse, English, French and the Gaels had an impact on Scots vocabulary as well as Scottish history. In conclusion, the author argues that the Scots language should be used and encouraged, not only because of its contribution to human achievement in the past, but because it is a unique mark of the distinctive identity of the Scottish people. J. Derrick McClure is Senior Lecturer in the Department of English at the University of Aberdeen.
