A Disciple's Life: The Biography of Neal A. Maxwell

Bruce C. Hafen - 2002
In later years, when I was an administrator and a teacher at Ricks College and then at BYU, I saw him often in Church Educational System meetings, where he was a key figure on the Church Board of Education. In 1996 I was called to the Seventy and assigned to an Area Presidency in Australia, where I remained until returning to Utah in August of 2000. Like so many other Church members, my wife, Marie, and I were stunned by the news of Elder Maxwell's leukemia in late 1996, and we worried and prayed about his health. During October conference 1999, he invited me to come by his office. As we talked, he indicated he was not certain about his condition. He said he was receiving an experimental treatment but "one of these days" the leukemia just might fully return. That was the main reason, he said, why he'd finally yielded to prodding from others that he allow the writing of his biography. I thought a book on his life story would be wonderful until he asked if I would write it. As honored as I felt, I honestly thought my doing this was not a good idea. I believed that he, his family, and the Church deserved thorough research and writing, and the work needed to be done at once to maximize the possibility of being published during his lifetime. He shared those hopes. But given the frightening uncertainty about his health; given that acceptable biographies can take years to document and write; given that he hadn't kept a personal journal, which would necessitate additional months of original research; and given that I was half a world away on a Church assignment I replied that someone who could give this project immediate and full-time attention was needed. Nonetheless, after more visits with Elder Maxwell and with others, within a few days I had agreed to begin the project and to move as quickly as possible. In the weeks that followed, I worried about having committed myself to something as unreachable as this task seemed. As I would awaken to hear the colorful birds that rule those fresh Australian mornings, I would sometimes wonder if indeed, I would hope that I had agreed to write Elder Maxwell's biography only in a dream. Then the reality would hit me again. At times I would remember Nephi's words about the Lord preparing a way for people who have a work to do.

If Thou Endure It Well

Neal A. Maxwell - 2002
But that stern requirement was only superficially appreciated back then. Life has since underscored, again and again, what a high test enduring well is for us mortals. Moreover, it isn't just for old people, nor is it just something one does near the very end of the pathway of discipleship. It is, instead, an ongoing thing which varies from season to season and from experience to experience. As if all this were not enough in itself, the challenge of enduring in the last days includes so many added challenges in this difficult world. For instance, the trends cited in the forepart of the book are like pythons-capable of squeezing spirituality out unless they are deliberately offset by serious discipleship. Furthermore, some gospel principles, once very pervasive in western culture, now must compete with the "play-dough principles" of permissiveness. The situation makes for high adventure. Thus while the doctrine of enduring is like a diamond with many facets, this is an attempt to turn that diamond around, so that the light of the gospel can be played upon its different dimensions.

The Wealthy Spirit is the only book that offers an approach to achieving both spiritual and financial wealth. Through a series of daily affirmations that focus on the reader's internal strength and capacity for change, this book will set them on a path toward personal enlightenment and wealth in body, mind, and spirit. Using a day-to-day approach, readers will learn six keys: Think positive. Like mind over matter, mind over money begins with believing you deserve it and can get it. Send out ships. You can wait for your ship to come in, but if you don't send any out, it's going to be a long wait. Count your money. Money is a game and you have to know the score. The money score will tell you how well you're doing at steps one and two. Swim with dolphins. Being "in the swim" will depend largely on who you're swimming with. Find "your people" and avoid sharks. Survive the storms. You must weather interior storms as well as exterior ones. Persistence is key. Seek balance and enlightenment. Only from their perspective will you know when you have "enough." The Wealthy Spirit offers readers peace of mind to help them build financial muscle and a successful, stress-free life.

Consider the gift for a moment, what Jesus really did. He swapped a spotless castle for a grimy stable. He exchanged the worship of angels for the company of killers. Why? Because that's what love does. It puts the beloved before itself.Your soul was more important than his blood. Your eternal life was more important than his earthly life. Your place in heaven was more important to him than his place in heaven, so he gave up his so you could have yours. And that's what extravagant giving is all about.Reminding us of the most priceless gift of all, A Love Worth Giving to You at Christmas invites you to let this love worth giving fill you, flood you, and change you forever.

The Exquisite Pearl

عبدالرحمن ناصر السعدي - 2002
For the heart is both the seat of intelligence and understanding, and the locus of faith and spirituality; it is the quintessential faculty by which man may come to know his creator, and seek nearness and intimacy with Him. The heart's spiritual sustenance lies in its being receptive to the effusions of divine grace and guidance, without which the veils that cover it will continue to corrupt its primordial purity, gradually rendering it dysfunctional! Each veil- a metaphor for heedlessness, sins and distraction- that is melted away by the rays of faith and spiritual endeavour, allows vital qualities such as love of Allah, as well as hope, fear, remembrance, and reliance upon Him, are referred to in the religious vocabulary as spiritual stations; only when the heart embraces these stations is it said to be truly sound. The Majestic Qur'an informs: 'The day when wealth and sons avail not, save him who brings to Allah a heart that is sound.'
