Her family's survival was always precarious, as her father did his best to scrape out a subsistence for his family and her mother's faith in God bound them together even when her children did not appreciate it. As a young black woman, Mary experience hatred, intolerance and injustice that turned her bitter and angry. She was the first in her family to graduate from high school, the first to receive a full scholarship to a university, and she continued to reach out for everything life had to offer.
