Sheri Dew - 2015
Yet how many of us truly understand grace and how to unlock the power it contains? In Amazed by Grace, author Sheri Dew considers four questions: What is grace? What difference can grace make in our lives? How does the Savior make His power available to us? And what must we do to gain access to the Savior's power?Expand your understanding of grace and broaden your gospel horizon with Sheri as she reminds us that "the central, most compelling, most life-changing message of all time is that Jesus Christ already triumphed over sin, death, hell and every kind of misery. My Will or Thine: An Inspiring True Story About LDS Priesthood Blessings and the Difficult Questions Surrounding Them (Understanding Mormon Doctrine and the Hard Questions Book 2)

B. Russell McConkie - 2015
Holland, Sheri Dew, and Dieter F. Uchtdorf will love this book. An inspiring true story of faith, hope, and God's love. As I held my infant son in my arms, I began to ponder some deep questions regarding LDS priesthood blessings. If his life ever became threatened by illness or accident and I needed to administer a priesthood blessing, how could I possibly know what to say? How could I know whether my feelings were from inspiration or from my own desires? If my duty was to tune into the frequency of the “Still, Small Voice” prompting me, then how could I possibly tune out the fatherly instincts screaming inside my head? I also began to wonder about other blessings that were not meant for the healing of the sick and afflicted—blessings of comfort and guidance. If I were facing a tough decision, what did it matter if I had someone give me a blessing? If my faith and obedience was the key to receiving God’s blessings, wouldn’t it be just as beneficial to only fast and pray? In searching for answers to these (and other) questions, I spent a lot of time with my nose in the scriptures, listening to LDS General Conference talks, reading blogs, and devouring good books. It seemed like the majority of what I read on the subject of priesthood blessings was dedicated to miracles—the kind where people were able to “arise and walk” after being near death, etc. Many of them said something like, “The power of priesthood blessings is real. Let me tell you about a miracle I witnessed as a result of a priesthood blessing.” I wholeheartedly believe in God showing his divine power by healing people in miraculous ways, but those stories are considered miraculous and special for a reason—they’re not how things typically go. It would be easy to have faith in priesthood blessings if everyone were healed instantly every time a blessing was pronounced, but faith is not always that easy. Often times, and definitely so in my case, we learn best by experience. Answers to my questions did not become clear to me until I found myself in one of those dire and scary situations—the kind that terrified me and tried my soul to the highest level. This book is a true story. It purposefully does not contain any “arise and walk” type of miracles, but as you follow the inspiring journey of how I found answers to my own questions, your faith and testimony surrounding priesthood blessings and God’s love will grow.

In The Way Back to Heaven: The Parable of the Crystal Stairs, award-winning author S. Michael Wilcox helps us discern the "stairs of man" from the "stairs of God." Using the metaphor of a beautiful crystal stairway, he shows us the difference between a focus on "being and becoming" and "believing and doing" in our life's journey. While we may think we know the steps we'll need to take, the author suggests some unexpected—even counterintuitive—yet essential stairs each of us will encounter as we make our way back to our Father in Heaven.

Traditions of the Fathers: The Book of Mormon as History

Brant A. Gardner - 2015
Similar to the Bible, its sermons and explications of religious principles are presented against the framework of the story of a people. It is a story that covers a thousand years. In this book Brant Gardner looks around and behind the religious purposes of the book and teases out how those thousand years of Book of Mormon history correspond to those same years in the geographic and cultural context where they most plausibly took place.Gardner works through the Book of Mormon chronologically, examining how events in the Book of Mormon reflect the greater historical and cultural developments happening around them at the same time. Gardner asks and answers questions against particular historical backdrops. Why does Nephi appear to be so Christian so long before Christ, and why does his particular time period in Jerusalem help answer that question? Why do Nephi apostate groups from different times appear to adopt the same religion? Why does the Book of Mormon end around A.D. 400? Why not earlier or later? The answers are developed by looking at the Book of Mormon as history in the context of what has become known of Mesoamerican history. Along the way, Gardner also looks at the problem of anachronisms, DNA, and some popular “proofs” of the Book of Mormon that need to be abandoned.

The Testimony of Luke

S. Kent Brown - 2015
Descending into the darkest recesses of human agony and sin reaches the warm, caring Jesus. These two are the same person. Luke’s testimony introduces us to this man become God—God the Son. He comes into our world already bearing a divine nature, already carrying divine qualities. His birth is a miracle; he is “Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:11). But he does not stride through mortality without mental and physical challenges. Contemplating his future suffering, he declares, “I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened [distressed] till it be accomplished!” (Luke 12:50). Months later, he has resolved his fears when he leads his disciples on the long, steep climb from Jericho to Jerusalem, ready to face his destiny. Only Luke’s testimony captures Jesus’ inner transformation. The most distinguishing element of this line-by-line, word-by-word commentary is the introduction of Latter-day Saint scriptures—the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price—to illuminate Luke’s Gospel. For example, important LDS doctrines arise from Jesus’ activity in the spirit world immediately after his death.More than all other gospel accounts, Luke captures the compassion and love of the Savior. Such sweet concern manifests itself particularly for the downtrodden and those forced to the margins of society. Within this frame, most notable is Jesus’ compassion for women and children, a compassion that springs into view in story after story. This aspect of Luke’s Gospel derives neither from his own special interest nor from his sources. Jesus’ compassion is genuine and cannot be hidden; he gives dignity back to women involved in divorce (see Luke 16:18) and appeals to the women and children of Jerusalem as he is led to the cross (see 23:27–33). Similarly, Luke introduces us to Elisabeth and Mary, recipients of God’s blessings both for them and, through their expected children, for the rest of humankind. Within these stories and others, Luke discloses the deep, divine love that runs through his narrative of Christ. Prof. Brown's Commentary is, to put it bluntly, an astonishing achievement. . . . I learned a lot from it, and that learning took place on multiple levels. . . . Prof. Brown's book is a virtuoso performance. . . . The focus on family is not surprising, given that Mormons are well known for putting family at the center of their religious practices, but Prof. Brown's commentary is the first, as far as I know, to show how fruitful it is to put family at the center of the reading of the Gospels. Luke's Jesus, in Brown's hands, is not the solitary hero, sadly misunderstood, of much modern biblical theology, nor is he a downtrodden man who is born into solidarity with the poor and dispossessed. This is a Jesus who is from a stable, loving, and quite traditional family, who is well educated (knowing four languages, Aramaic, Hebrew, Greek and Spoken Egyptian), who rises early in the morning to worship and work, and who is a lover of conversation, indeed, a consummate talker who always has an appropriate story on hand to deal with any situation. The result is that details of the Gospel come alive in new ways, like the easily overlooked mention that Peter and his wife have been taking care of Peter's mother-in-law (Luke 4:38–39). — Stephen H. Webb, former Professor of Religion and Philosophy, Wabash College
