Amazed by Grace

Sheri Dew - 2015
Yet how many of us truly understand grace and how to unlock the power it contains? In Amazed by Grace, author Sheri Dew considers four questions: What is grace? What difference can grace make in our lives? How does the Savior make His power available to us? And what must we do to gain access to the Savior's power?Expand your understanding of grace and broaden your gospel horizon with Sheri as she reminds us that "the central, most compelling, most life-changing message of all time is that Jesus Christ already triumphed over sin, death, hell and every kind of misery. Surely there is nothing our Father is more eager for us to understand than the breathtaking scope of the Atonement of His Son and the power the Atonement makes available to us."

Gaining by Losing: Why the Future Belongs to Churches That Send

J.D. Greear - 2015
Greear pastors. Big givers. Key volunteers. Some of his best leaders and friends. And that's exactly how he wants it to be.When Jesus gave his disciples the Great Commission, he revealed that the key for reaching the world with the gospel is found in sending, not gathering. Though many churches focus time and energy on attracting people and counting numbers, the real mission of the church isn't how many people you can gather. It's about training up disciples and then sending them out. The true measure of success for a church should be its sending capacity, not its seating capacity. But there is a cost to this. To see ministry multiply, we must release the seeds God has placed in our hands. And to do that, we must ask ourselves whether we are concerned more with building our kingdom or God's.In Gaining By Losing, J.D. Greear unpacks ten plumb lines that you can use to reorient your church's priorities around God's mission to reach a lost world. The good news is that you don't need to choose between gathering or sending. Effective churches can, and must, do both.

Reading Moses, Seeing Jesus: How the Torah fulfills its goal in Yeshua

Seth D. Postell - 2015
Seth Postell (our academic dean), Eitan Bar (our media-evangelism director), and Dr. Erez Soref (our president) will deal with these questions. This book is the first to have been published by One For Israel.Review“At a time when there is much confusion about the believer's relationship to the law of Moses, Reading Moses, Seeing Jesus brings clarity, and it does so with light, not heat. What a helpful book for all followers of Yeshua, but particularly for Messianic Jews. Authors Postell, Bar, and Soref maintain a high and respectful perspective of Torah while demonstrating its continued role of pointing to the One of whom Moses wrote. If you want to understand the significance of the Torah and its relationship to those who are followers of Messiah, read this outstanding book. And while reading, keep your Bible at hand, take notes, become enlightened and be transformed.” (Michael Rydelnik, Professor of Jewish Studies and Bible, Moody Bible Institute Syndicated Radio Host and Teacher, Open Line with Dr. Michael Rydelnik Author of The Messianic Hope and Co-editor and contributor, The Moody Bible Commentary)“Most Christians believe the apostle Paul’s assertion to Timothy that ‘all Scripture is inspired by God and profitable’ for disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ. But how many Christians truly study the Old Testament in their own devotions, or feel that they really understand the differences in―and the relationship between―the Old and New Testaments? Reading Moses, Seeing Jesus is a tremendous resource for anyone interested in understanding the ‘whole counsel’ of Scripture, the fundamental purpose of the Mosaic law, the power of the Messianic prophecies, and how to engage in effective and fruitful Jewish evangelism and discipleship. I absolutely loved this book and highly recommend it to pastors and lay people alike!”(Joel C. Rosenberg, New York Times best-selling author, Bible teacher and founder of The Joshua Fund)“We are often told that by traditional Jews that they don’t need Yeshua because they have the Torah. Yet Yeshua told the Jewish leaders of his day that, if they truly believed Moses, they would believe in him. How can this be? The authors of this exciting new book, written with humility and clarity, and based on solid academic research, explain just what Yeshua meant, even demonstrating that the ultimate goal of the Torah is to point to him. Your eyes will be opened as you read.”(Michael L. Brown, President, FIRE School of Ministry, author, Answering Jewish Objections to Jesus (5 vols.))“The one most confusing issue among Messianic Jews (and today, also among many Gentiles believers) is the role of the Torah in the life of the believer. In the movement there are many who claim to be ‘Torah observant’ but fail to read the details of what was commanded by God through Moses, and often as they claim to keep the Torah, they are actually breaking the specific laws involved in keeping the Torah. In the end, while they are preaching Torah, they practice grace. Thus the publication of Reading Moses, Seeing Jesus is a welcome contribution to the discussion that will clearly clarify all the issues from a solid biblical perspective and help many believers reach a biblical balance on the role and purpose of the Torah.” (Arnold Fruchtenbaum, Founder and Director, Ariel Ministries)“The discussion of the law and believers in Messiah has been a topic of discussion ever since Jesus showed up and many Jews and Gentiles proclaimed him as the fulfillment of promise. This is a brilliant little book showing Torah was not just about law but also about the prospect of promise and the need for that Messiah. What Torah promised pointed ultimately of the need for God working from within. That message rings loud and clear in this book with an explanation to match.”(Darrell L. Bock, Executive Director for Cultural Engagement, Howard G. Hendricks Center for Christian Leadership and Cultural Engagement; Senior Research Professor of New Testament Studies, Dallas Theological Seminary)“Christians have discussed and debated for centuries the role of the law now that Christ has come. The authors of this delightful and clear book show that the Old Testament itself teaches that the law cannot save. Indeed, a right reading of the Old Testament points to the Messiah as the one who forgives sins, and thus Christians are oriented fundamentally to Jesus instead of the law. Here we have a biblical-theological reading of the Old Testament that is insightful and instructive, and readers will see the wonderful unity of the whole Bible in this work. I warmly welcome this contribution from Jewish believers in Jesus.”(Thomas R. Schreiner, James R. Buchanan Harrison Professor of New Testament, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary)“Exegetically solid, theologically sound, contemporaneously relevant, eminently readable―all these qualifiers are true and will prove to be vindicated by its intended readership. Especially commendable―and that lends it authenticity―is the fact that its authors are Israeli scholars who embrace messianic faith that names Jesus of Nazareth as Savior and Lord. This is a must!”(Eugene H. Authors Seth Postell, Eitan Bar, and Erez Soref demonstrate from Scripture that to embrace Yeshua is not to abandon the Jewish people or Israel’s great heritage. On the contrary, to embrace Yeshua in faith is to enter into the blessings of the new covenant prophesied by Jeremiah long ago. God has fulfilled his promises to his people Israel in the life, death, and resurrection of Yeshua the Messiah. Reading Moses, Seeing Jesus shows in a clear and compelling way that God has not rejected his chosen people but continues to love them and seeks to bring them into fellowship with him.”— Craig A. Evans, John Bisagno Distinguished Professor of Christian Origins, Houston Baptist University “I give thanks to the Lord for the work of ONE FOR ISRAEL and Israel College of the Bible. Their book Reading Moses, Seeing Jesus is a rich and helpful resource for understanding the Torah both literarily and theologically, demonstrating that, by divine design, Moses indeed spoke of Yeshua (John 5:46).”—L. Michael Morales, Professor of Biblical Studies, Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary, Taylors, SC “As a professor and student of the Bible, I found fresh insights in this book that clarified the trajectory of the whole of Scripture. Highly recommended!”—George H. Guthrie, Professor of New Testament, Regent College, Vancouver, BC

The Plausibility Problem

Ed Shaw - 2015
But is it realistic? Isn't it unrealistic and unfair to those who struggle with this issue? Doesn't it condemn them to loneliness, a lack of fulfilment and the loss of basic human satisfactions like sex and marriage? Is what the church teaches a plausible way of life?Ed Shaw experiences same-sex attraction, and yet he is committed to what the Bible says and what the church has always taught about marriage and sex. In this honest book, he shares his pain in dealing with these issues - but, at the same time, shows us that obedience to Jesus is ultimately the only way to experience life to the full.He shows that the Bible's teaching seems unreasonable not because of its difficulties, but because of missteps that the church has often taken in its understanding of the Christian life. We have been shaped by the world around us, and urgently need to re-examine the values that drive our discipleship. Only by doing this in the light of the Bible, can we make sense of its call on the lives of those who are attracted to their own sex.We have so often made Jesus' way sound like a bad deal. Only by reclaiming the reality of gospel discipleship, can we truly see and appreciate that life in Christ is the best way for any human life to be lived - whomever we are attracted to

He also clearly teaches the core doctrine of the Church to help members share it in a clear and powerful way. Baptist Foundations: Church Government for an Anti-Institutional Age

Mark DeverStephen J. Wellum - 2015
Yet polity remains as important now as it was in the New Testament.   What then is a right or biblical polity? The contributors to this volume make an exegetical and theological case for a Baptist polity. Right polity, they argue, is congregationalism, elder leadership, diaconal service, regenerate church membership, church discipline, and a Baptist approach to the ordinances.   Each section explores the pastoral applications of these arguments. How do congregationalism and elder leadership work together? When should a church practice church discipline? How can one church work with another in matters of membership and discipline?     To be read sequentially or used as a reference guide, Baptist Foundations provides a contemporary treatment of Baptist church government and structures, the first of its kind in decades.

The Vulnerable Pastor: How Human Limitations Empower Our Ministry

Mandy Smith - 2015
That's why we go to conferences and emulate the latest superstars. But we know we can never live up to those images. Deep down, we know our own limitations, our weaknesses, our faults. We fear that if people knew who we really are, we'd be disqualified from ministry. Not so. Mandy Smith unpacks the biblical paradox that God's strength is revealed through our human weakness. Transparently describing her pastoral journey, Smith shows how vulnerability shapes ministry, through our spiritual practices and relationships, influencing our preaching, teaching and even the nuts and bolts of the daily schedule. Understanding our human constraints makes our ministry more sustainable and guards us against disillusionment and burnout. We don't have to have it all together. Recognizing our weakness makes us rely on God, so our weakness can become a ministry resource. God has called you to lead not as a demigod, but as a human, so the world can see that the church is a place for humans like them.

The Pastor's Ministry: Biblical Priorities for Faithful Shepherds

Brian Croft - 2015
Some choose to respond to the most urgent needs, while others seek a more balanced and intentional approach. But what determines these priorities? Where should a busy pastor look for wisdom in making decisions? In the Pastor’s Ministry, pastor and author Brian Croft looks to the Scriptures to determine the top ten priorities for a faithful pastoral ministry. These biblically rooted responsibilities help pastors determine how to spend their time and with greater discernment respond to the demands of the church. Each of these priorities is rooted in a direct command of God’s Word, including: Guarding the TruthPreaching and Teaching the WordPraying for the FlockSetting an ExampleVisiting the SickComforting the GrievingCaring for WidowsConfronting SinEncouraging the Faint-HeartedIdentifying and Training Other LeadersTo be successful and faithful in pastoral ministry, every pastor needs to understand these core callings and make them part of his regular practice.  These ten responsibilities guide how a pastor schedules his time, helping him to lay the foundation for a biblically faithful ministry in his church.

Prayer, In Practice: A workbook to help you pray more and better-today

J.L. Gerhardt - 2015
It moves mountains and opens doors and changes the world. In practice? Well, a lot of us have never stuck with it long enough to find out. We forget to pray. We wonder if we're doing it right. We get distracted. We're not sure how to break the 4-minute mark (what else is there to say?). Mostly, we just say thank you, ask for stuff, and hope for the best. There's a better way. This book (workbook, really) is built on a novel idea--that the best way to learn to pray is to pray. In practicing prayer, we discover its power to connect us to God and His people, to transform our hearts and minds, and to, well, change the world. In these pages, J.L. Gerhardt walks you through some straightforward ways to make prayer a habit, leading you in new (and sometimes very old) ways of praying. Her hope is to light a fire in you for prayer AND provide the skills you need to keep the fire burning. Jennifer Gerhardt writes, creates Bible studies, and leads workshops about prayer with the single goal of leading people into a closer, more on-purpose relationship with God. She’s spent the last ten years intentionally exploring and experimenting with prayer. Jennifer works alongside her husband Justin Gerhardt with Round Rock Church of Christ (just outside Austin, TX) and homeschools their daughters London (7) and Eve (6). She likes to explore outside, take pictures, read books and eat gluten-free pizza. --------------------- CHAPTERS: 1: Just Do It Because if you want to pray more you’re gonna have to pray more 2: Jumping Hurdles How to get past what's keeping you away 3: How to Pray In 60 Seconds or Less A lesson on prayer from a bonafide expert 4: Thanks. A lot. New ways to be very, very grateful 5: How Awesome Learning to praise 6: Over Coffee Getting closer to God 7: For Me? 7 Requests you can't not make 8: We, The People On praying for others 9: Not Done Yet Time to make a plan

The Way Back to Heaven

S. Michael Wilcox - 2015
In contrast, the prophet Jacob dreamed of a ladder sent down from heaven by God, with rungs—steps—that we could ascend to return to Him. In The Way Back to Heaven: The Parable of the Crystal Stairs, award-winning author S. Michael Wilcox helps us discern the "stairs of man" from the "stairs of God." Using the metaphor of a beautiful crystal stairway, he shows us the difference between a focus on "being and becoming" and "believing and doing" in our life's journey. While we may think we know the steps we'll need to take, the author suggests some unexpected—even counterintuitive—yet essential stairs each of us will encounter as we make our way back to our Father in Heaven.

Yesterday, Today, and Forever

M. Russell Ballard - 2015
Russell Ballard bears a unique heritage. A descendant of Hyrum Smith and Joseph F. Smith, Elder Ballard was also blessed with two grandfathers who were Apostles of the Lord Jesus Christ. Hyrum Mack Smith and Melvin J. Ballard left volumes of their sermons, writings, letters, and family records. In studying their words, Elder Ballard was reminded of this truth: "God is the same yesterday, today, and forever" (Mormon 9:9).His latest book shares a collection of his difficult-to-find messages given during his service as a General Authority, paired with related teachings from his grandfathers. "What I have taught," writes Elder Ballard, "is largely an echo of what was taught by my grandfathers."As the three Apostles share a common witness of the truths of the restored gospel, one thing becomes clear: although programs and policies may change, doctrine is eternal. It is both timely and timeless. The doctrine of the gospel is forever relevant to disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Blue Note Preaching in a Post-Soul World: Finding Hope in an Age of Despair

Otis Moss III - 2015
The world is experiencing the Blues, and pulpiteers are dispensing excessive doses of non-prescribed prosaic sermons with severe ecclesiastical and theological side effects. from chapter 1Uniquely gifted preacher Otis Moss III helps preachers effectively communicate hope in a desperate and difficult world in this new work based on his 2014 Yale Lyman Beecher Lectures. Moss challenges preachers to preach with a Blue Note sensibility, which speaks directly to the tragedies faced by their congregants without falling into despair. He then offers four powerful sermons that illustrate his Blue Note preaching style. In them, Moss beautifully and passionately brings to life biblical characters that speak to today's pressing issues, including race discrimination and police brutality, while maintaining a strong message of hope. Moss shows how preachers can teach their congregations to resist letting the darkness find its way into them and, instead, learn to dance in the dark.

A New New Testament: A Bible for the Twenty-first Century Combining Traditional and Newly Discovered Texts

Hal Taussig - 2015
Readers will not be able to see the New Testament in the same way again."—Marcus Borg, author of The Heart of Christianity “A New New Testament does what some of us never dreamed possible: it opens the treasure chest of early Christian writings, restoring a carefully select few of them to their rightful place in the broad conversation about who Jesus was, what he did and taught, and what all of that has to do with us now.” — Barbara Brown Taylor, author of Leaving Church and An Altar in the World   There are twenty-seven books in the traditional New Testament, but the earliest Christian communities were far more vibrant than that small number might lead you to think. In fact, many more scriptures were written and were just as important as the New Testament in shaping early-Christian communities and beliefs. Over the past century, many of those texts that were lost have been found and translated, yet are still not known to much of the public; they are discussed mainly by scholars or within a context of the now outdated notion of gnostic gospels. In A New New Testament Hal Taussig is changing that. With the help of nineteen important spiritual leaders, he has added ten of the recently discovered texts to the traditional New Testament, leading many churches and spiritual seekers to use this new New Testament for their spiritual and intellectual growth.   “Remarkable . . . Not meant to replace the traditional New Testament, this fascinating work will be, Taussig hopes, the first of several new New Testaments.” — Booklist

How Churches Became Cruise Ships: A Survival Guide for the Seasick Christian

Skye Jethani - 2015
Like the popularity of cruise vacations, it is obvious that the shape of the modern church is very attractive to millions of people. If you are content with what the church has become, the benefit of this book for you may be limited to its explanation of recent church history and trends. If, however, you are like the millions of others wrestling with what the church has become, this book will help you identify the cause of your queasiness and provides you with ways to overcome it. Note from the author: I recommend reading this book in community; Processing your thoughts about the church with others may uncover similar stories, or challenge your assumptions in ways reading alone never could. Ultimately, my hope is that together you will be able to discern where God is calling you—and the entire church—in the days ahead.

Born of Conviction: White Methodists and Mississippi's Closed Society

Joseph T. Reiff - 2015
The Born of Conviction statement, signed by twenty-eight white Methodist pastors and published in the Mississippi Methodist Advocate on January2, 1963, offered an alternative witness to the segregationist party line. Calling for freedom of the pulpit and reminding readers of the Methodist Discipline's claim that the teachings of Jesus permit no discrimination because of race, color, or creed, the pastors sought to speak to and for amostly silent yet significant minority of Mississippians, and to lead white Methodists to join the conversation on the need for racial justice. The document additionally expressed support for public schools and opposition to any attempt to close them, and affirmed the signers' opposition toCommunism. Though a few individuals, both laity and clergy, voiced public affirmation of Born of Conviction, the overwhelming reaction was negative-by mid-1964, eighteen of the signers had left Mississippi, evidence of the challenges faced by whites who offered even mild dissent to massiveresistance in the Deep South.Dominant narratives, however, rarely tell the whole story. The statement caused a significant crack in the public unanimity of Mississippi white resistance. Signers and their public supporters also received private messages of gratitude for their stand, and eight of the signers would remain in theMethodist ministry in Mississippi until retirement. Born of Conviction tells the story of the Twenty-Eight illuminating the impact on the larger culture of this attempt by white clergy to support race relations change. The book explores the theological and ethical understandings of the signersthrough an account of their experiences before, during, and after the statement's publication. It also offers a detailed portrait of both public and private expressions of the theology and ethics of white Mississippi Methodists in general, as revealed by their responses to the Born of Convictioncontroversy.

Church with Jesus as the Hero

David E. Prince - 2015
Consider the book a quick start guide to help create a Christ-centered life and ministry trajectory. There really is a way to read, apply, preach, serve, and live with Jesus as the Hero that keeps the gospel of God’s sovereign grace front and center in everything.Any biblical truth abstracted from the gospel is corrupted. The only possible context for genuine obedience is faith in Jesus. Therefore, genuine spiritual motivation must always be presented in terms of the gospel. We are not heroes; we are sinners, failures, and weaklings—the not-nobles of the world. Attempting to become a spiritual hero or to cultivate a heroic image is an empty, vain, hollow, and hopeless pursuit. There is only one Hero—Jesus—and he has no rivals. When we start trusting him and stop trying to be him, we can say with Paul, “For freedom Christ has set us free” (Gal. 5:1)."David Prince is my favorite living preacher. He connects every text of scripture with the central message of the Bible: the gospel of the kingdom of Jesus Christ. This book models that biblical strategy. I highly commend it for anyone who preaches, teaches, or seeks to apply God's word." Russell D. Moore, President, Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention"The saving glory of Jesus Christ is the world's only hope and thus ought to be the church's only focus. What a great gift this wonderful book is, then, in helping us direct our vision and ministry away from ourselves and to Christ the Redeemer!" Jared C. Wilson, Managing Editor of Midwestern Seminary's For the Church (ftc.com) and Author, The Prodigal Church"I will be quick to commend this book to those who want to make sure King Jesus is kept at the center of the life of the church and all the things she does to rightly honor and worship the One that the Scriptures testify to from Genesis 1:1 to Revelation 22:21." Daniel L. Akin, President, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary

Pray with Me: Seven Simple Ways to Pray with Your Children

Grace Mazza Urbanski - 2015
Using warmth, humor, and passion, Urbanski draws on personal experience to show how families are brought closer together through deeper contact with God. There are opportunities for children to pray everywhere-when a friend gets hurt on the playground, before a test in the classroom, as they hear ambulance sirens while riding in the car with mom or dad-not just at meals and bedtime. In Pray with Me, Urbanski identifies seven ways that parents can help deepen their child's relationship with God by using everyday life as a trigger for prayer. She shows how spontaneous prayer, traditional prayers you know by heart, scripture, song, silence, and reflection help families draw closer to God and each other. Urbanski weaves personal stories with a heartfelt devotion to Christ to teach parents how to help their children learn to respond to life in prayer.

Lime Green: Reshaping Our View of Women in the Church

Jackie Roese - 2015
God didn't give specific colors to specific genders. It's one big color wheel, and gender isn't in the equation. How does our embracing our authentic color - unapologetically who we are - controlled by the Spirit, impact our view of women in conservative faith communities? Lime Green helps answer that questions. This a story about Jackie Roese, a clueless farm girl who stumbled into vocational Christian work. Jackie bumped into walls, crossed invisible lines, and ultimately reshaped her view of women-and her church's view, too. This book doesn't make the case for women to preach or lead in the church. Rather, it shares this is one woman's story of stumbling and bumping to reveal a way, a path with all its rocks, hills, and smooth road, to help others find their footing in reshaping the way we view women in the Church. Every follower of Christ is given gifts by the Holy Spirit for the building up of the church. And the same gifts are given to both men and women. Jackie Roese is a gifted leader and teacher who has an important story to tell about finding her gifts and using them for the building up of the body of Christ. In this book Jackie tells her story with characteristic courage and candor. It's an important story that will challenge and inspire anyone who reads it.

In Brimstone, Hugh Halter helps us navigate the overuse of poor judgment and the underuse of right judgment. This book will help you navigate the great law of love given by Jesus. The Crisis of British Protestantism: Church Power in the Puritan Revolution, 1638 - 44

Hunter Powell - 2015
It seeks to bring coherence to a pre-revolutionary historiography that focuses on questions of conformity to and (semi-)separatism from 'the church by law established' and a post-1642 historiography built around a coarse polarity of 'Presbyterian' and 'Independent', and modern notions of religious toleration. This book argues that the fundamental ecclesiological issue in 1638 - 44 was the question of church power. Once Parliament conceded that ecclesiastical power did not reside in the diocesan bishop, the state, along with its leading puritan divines, needed to isolate where church power existed and how that power was executed.Parliament wanted a church that would stymie a clerical usurpation of state control, but could equally fend off the burgeoning call for separation of church and state. When Parliament called the Westminster assembly of divines, it knew that one of the most destabilising elements of the body politic was an inchoate national church, where heterodoxy presented as much of a threat as prelacy. This book rigorously examines this pivotal moment of religious reform by analysing a small but vitally important group of these assembly divines, their writings, and their private interaction as Parliament began national church reform in the midst of a civil war. It challenges many long-held assumptions surrounding religious and political debates during the Puritan Revolution and will provide a new framework for both students and teachers to understand one of the most important moments in British history.

Biblical Elders and Deacons

Nehemiah Coxe - 2015
"The edification and beauty of the Church is much concerned in her order, not such an order as superstition will dictate, or litigious nicety contend for, but such as sets her in a conformity with Christ's will; and particularly the filling up of the offices which He has appointed, with persons duly qualified for the administration of them, and the regular acting both of officers and members in their respective positions."

A Wilderness of Mirrors: Trusting Again in a Cynical World

Mark Meynell - 2015
We’ve been misled by authorities and institutions, by businesses and politicians, and even by those who were supposed to care for us. The very cohesion of society seems tenuous at times. The church is not immune from these trends. Historically, it has a dubious record when it has wielded power; personally, many of its members are as afflicted by our culture’s breakdown as anyone. In A Wilderness of Mirrors author Mark Meynell explores the roots of the discord and alienation that mark our society, but he also outlines a gospel-based reason for hope. An astute social observer with a pastor’s spiritual sensitivity, Meynell grounds his antidote on four bedrocks of the Christian faith: human nature, Jesus, the church, and the story of God's action in the world.  Ultimately hopeful, A Wilderness of Mirrors calls Christians to rediscover the radical implications of Jesus’s life and message for a disillusioned world, a world more than ever in need of his trustworthy goodness.

Heirs of Promise: The Church as the New Israel in Romans

P. Chase Sears - 2015
Chase Sears discusses this relationship between the Church and Israel, and he explains how that affects our understanding of the Old Testament.Using a biblical-theological approach to the book of Romans, Sears argues that Paul understood the church not as a replacement of Israel, but as the new Israel--the continuation of Israel reconstituted in Christ. And Jesus, as the Son of God, is the true Israel who fulfills all of God's purposes for Israel and creation. Sears shows how the Old Testament promises to Israel are being fulfilled in the Church.

Gateway of Life: Orthodox Thinking on the Mother of God

Mary B. Cunningham - 2015
Yet throughout the history of the Christian Church she has been the focus of unparalleled love and devotion, the subject of fervent prayer. For countless people she is the heavenly mother, the first one to turn to with their urgent hopes and desperate needs. To add to this, she has been the subject of significant debate over the centuries, concerning theology as well as devotion. Theologically, there were ancient questions centered on the person of Christ, whom she bore in her womb. More recently, many Christians as well as non-Christians are puzzled: What in the Bible gives us the foundation for this degree of attention to Mary? Is not her veneration a potentially dangerous exaggeration, akin to goddess-worship? Is it not God, and His Christ and His Spirit, that are our proper focuses?Such questions arise especially in the churches born of the Reformation, although they can emanate also from people within churches where she is deeply venerated. It is not always easy to answer such queries, as the heartfelt love surrounding our experience of Mary makes it impossible fully to explain and still less feasible to convince someone of it. Yet we can learn a great deal from an informed and engaged exploration of the ways Mary, the Mother of God, has been understood in the Church. This book, by a scholar and person of faith, provides exactly that.

The Last Wedding

Dave Zuchelli - 2015
The author, who performs weddings (when he has to), lays out the case for the real reason behind marriage. Frankly, it's probably not what you think. For many today, marriage is merely a contractual agreement. It's a convenience. It avoids the anachronistic taboo of living together for anyone who even cares about that old stigma anymore. Marriage has become "what one does" or should do (maybe). For some it's merely a big hassle to be avoided all together. Many marriages today are about the ceremony. How big of a splash can we make? Can we find the best venue? Should we do it up big or invite a more intimate crowd? Who should be included? Who should be left off the list? Should my Dad give me away (again)? Should we write our own vows? How much should I spend on my gown? Should we do it indoors or out? Aren't we supposed to do this in a church?Church indeed… What does the church even have to do with this institution these days? Marriage is a civil thing. The state issues the license, and even preachers have to sign and send it back to the courthouse. Is there even a connection anymore? The author of the The Last Wedding is a preacher and has performed weddings for thirty-five years. He can't remember the last time he officiated a wedding ceremony in his own church building? In fact, it's been a long time since he oversaw one inside any building at all. Does that matter to him? Does it matter to anyone? Does it matter to God?The Last Wedding is a gleeful attempt to define what real marriage is all about. It's a slightly humorous and sometimes-irreverent foray into what God intends marriage to be. Few actually think about that before they dive into their own marriages. The author gives us some meat to chew on before taking the plunge. But it's never too late. Those having already gotten wet with the dew of matrimonial bliss will benefit from this entertaining read as well. The Last Wedding is for pastors, preachers, and Marrying Sam's who need a refreshing look at the age-old institution. It's for couples, young and old, who want to marry but aren't exactly sure why. It's for everyone else as well. After all, marriage (or the lack thereof) affects us all whether we like it or not. We should know why we bother with it.The author's personal usage of his book is to give it away to couples for whom he is about to help tie the proverbial knot. By his own admission, he's a lousy counselor. Fortunately, he's a pretty fair writer. We don't know if that's a good substitute, but it will have to do.The real intent of this book, however, to look beyond the uniting of two human beings. The real intent is to reconnect with the spirit of marriage. When two human beings take vows with, to, and for one another, they are likely broken before the day is done. When we carefully read through the traditional wedding vows, we are likely to realize that no one can ever live up to them—at least not in the strictest sense. If that is truly the case, why do we take them in the first place? Are we liars? Do we say them just to get what we want? Are we naïve enough to believe that somehow we're different than everyone else? Are we that much better than others that we can live up to what we're saying in those few seconds as we stand before the officiant?Wouldn't it be better if we just chucked marriages altogether? Maybe, at least, we should dispense with the vows. After all, the only thing the state requires is a license and an official signature. We could take care of that in a heartbeat. But we don't… For some reason, we are drawn together in a bond that supersedes the license, the officiant, and the even the state. There is something deep down inside that pulls us into relationships that ostensibly cannot be broken—at least not without great pain. Millions of people get married every year. Some people get m

Subterranean: Why the Future of the Church is Rootedness

Dan White Jr. - 2015
Instead, across the country we find dry terrain where churches no longer can expect interested seekers--yet most of our solutions for addressing this predicament link to anxiety around our performance and personality. Rather than going back to the boardroom to cook up new techniques for a trendier church, let's ask more meaningfully rooted questions. Do we know how to be present in our neighborhoods? Do we know how to be present in community? Do we know how to be present to the in-breaking kingdom of God? There is a growing groundswell discovering that we have become uprooted and detached from each other in the way we express being the church. We need a subterranean movement that plunges below the surface into a way of being the people of God that carries an unwavering incarnational creed. Dan White Jr. uses crisp criticism, narrative theology, and tangible practices to uncover a hopeful pathway for being radically rooted in God's world. "Dan White has penned a well-written, distinctly prophetic book on incarnational mission. In it he calls us to a life beyond the standard cultural obsessions and to a faithfulness that is rendered through rootedness, abiding, witness, and service. A welcome addition to the books on prophetic missionality." --Alan Hirsch, author and activist "For too long the church has caved in to the desires of a world addicted to self-destructive speed and geographic displacement. But no longer, says White. God is seeking to re-place his people, to invite us into the radical act of stopping in a restless world, to be deeply rooted, to be witnesses to the life our world could experience if it truly surrendered to Christ. This inspiring and practical guide will help you in that monumental endeavor." --Michael Frost, author, Incarnate: The Body of Christ in an Age of Disengagement "Want a sneak peak into the future of the church in North America? Read this book. Better yet, want to join in this bold new future? Join with others and create local practices as inspired by this incredible resource. Rooted in courageous practice, White has written a pioneering guide that pinpoints the cancerous defaults of the contemporary church, while also casting a practical vision for how we can all join in God's abundant future." --Tim Soerens, coauthor of The New Parish: How Neighborhood Churches Are Transforming Mission, Discipleship, and Community "The bias toward up is powerful in church culture. As leaders, we want to be up-and-comers and eventually at the top. If our grand vision isn't realized, we pull up stakes and move on. In this fine book, White makes an impassioned case for down. 'Up-rootedness' abstracts us, but 'rootedness'--in community, place, and the unfolding work of God--is the truly radical trajectory of the church. It's difficult to imagine a more important message." --John Pattison, coauthor of Slow Church Dan White, Jr. co-planted Axiom Church when five families dove into the city of Syracuse, New York, to cultivate communities in diverse neighborhoods. He is also a church strategist with the V3 Movement, coaching cohorts from around the country through an eighteen-month missional training system. Finally, he is also cofounder of the Praxis Gathering. Dan finds deep delight in dwelling around the table with good coffee and a good conversation. He blogs at danwhitejr.com.
