She is most famous for the long-term photographic record of the lives of her and her friends, The Ballad of Sexual Dependency. She calls this "the diary I let people read." Her work comments frankly on all aspects of the lives of her immediate circle, the main themes being relationships, sexuality, eroticism, and the problems of alcohol and drug addiction. More recently, her images have shown the devastating effect AIDS has had on this community of friends. Her work is by turns disturbing, poignant, and celebratory.

    The book explores the influences that have affected the photo story, such as key twentieth century events and the life of photographic magazines such as Newsweek, Time, and Paris Match, all of which have helped to define the genre.

    This is a vision of the contemporary world (since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989) by the photographers of Magnum - from Henri Cartier-Bresson to the organization's newest recruits and presented in a sequence of photo-essays introduced by the photographers themselves.

    

    I want there to be a combination of the past juxtaposed with the modern. I use nature to symbolize the search, saving a tree, watering the earth. In this fabricated world, strange clouds of smog float by; there are holes in the sky. These mythic images mirror our world, where nature is domesticated, controlled, and destroyed. Through my work I explore technology and a poetry of existence.
