Teaching to Transgress: Education as the Practice of Freedom
bell hooks - 1994
Teaching students to "transgress" against racial, sexual, and class boundaries in order to achieve the gift of freedom is, for hooks, the teacher's most important goal.Bell hooks speaks to the heart of education today: how can we rethink teaching practices in the age of multiculturalism? What do we do about teachers who do not want to teach, and students who do not want to learn? How should we deal with racism and sexism in the classroom?Full of passion and politics, Teaching to Transgress combines practical knowledge of the classroom with a deeply felt connection to the world of emotions and feelings. This is the rare book about teachers and students that dares to raise critical questions about eros and rage, grief and reconciliation, and the future of teaching itself."To educate as the practice of freedom," writes bell hooks, "is a way of teaching that any one can learn." Teaching to Transgress is the record of one gifted teacher's struggle to make classrooms work.–from the back of the book

Working with Resistance
Martha Stark - 1994
The resistant patient is a defended patient within whom there is conflict between those healthy forces that press "yes" and those unhealthy counterforces that insist "no." Such patients resist feeling what they know they should feel and doing what they know they should do. Working with Resistance integrates concepts drawn from classical psychoanalysis, self psychology, and object relations theory and presents a contemporary theory of therapeutic action that takes into consideration structural conflict, structural deficit, and relational conflict - all of which ultimately both fuel the patient's progress in the treatment and oppose the patient's movement toward health and the realization of his potential. As part of the work to be done, patient and therapist must be able to understand and name, in a profoundly respectful fashion, both sets of forces - those healthy ones that impel the patient in the direction of progress and those unhealthy resistive ones that impede such progress. Before the defenses can be relinquished and the resistances overcome, the patient must come to appreciate his investment in the defenses, how they serve him, and the price he pays for holding on to them. Martha Stark has always been interested in exploring the relationship between theory and practice - the ways in which theoretical constructs can be translated into the clinical situation. To that end, she proposes specific interventions for each step of the process by which thedefenses are worked through and the resistances are rendered less necessary. Conflict statements, for example, are empathic interventions that highlight the conflict within the patient between his knowledge of reality, informed by the present, and his experience of reality, informed

Mathematical Thinking and Problem Solving
Alan H. Schoenfeld - 1994
Members of these groups came from different traditions, had different perspectives, and rarely gathered in the same place to discuss issues of common interest. Part of the problem was that there was no common ground for the discussions -- given the disparate traditions and perspectives. As one way of addressing this problem, the Sloan Foundation funded two conferences in the mid-1980s, bringing together members of the different communities in a ground clearing effort, designed to establish a base for communication. In those conferences, interdisciplinary teams reviewed major topic areas and put together distillations of what was known about them.*A more recent conference -- upon which this volume is based -- offered a forum in which various people involved in education reform would present their work, and members of the broad communities gathered would comment on it. The focus was primarily on college mathematics, informed by developments in K-12 mathematics. The main issues of the conference were mathematical thinking and problem solving.
Teaching Business English
Mark Ellis - 1994
In the case of job-experienced learners (from companies or other organizations), this means using their personal experience both as a source of meaningful content and as a way of motivating them to learn. For pre-experience learners who don't yet have this hands-on experience, the teacher needs to draw on their interest in, and general knowledge of, the world of work. The book is divided into three parts. Part One is especially useful if you are new to Business English teaching or are thinking of moving into it. Parts Two and Three will provide ideas for practising and experienced teachers, as well as newcomers.- Part One gives a general background to the subject. It includes definitions of Business English, descriptions of different categories of learner, and of the types of institution where Business English is taught. It also looks at the various resources you will need to use as a Business English trainer, and at ways of setting performance objectives.- Part Two focuses on the needs of the learners and shows you how you can analyse those needs in order to decide on the structure and content of a course. It covers ways of describing levels of performance and of analysing learners' jobs. It also explains what you need to know about your learners and how to set about getting the information you need. Finally there is an explanation of course design and how to decide on what to teach, based on what you have found out about learners' work and language needs.- Part Three looks at materials and activities. It explains how to choose published materials and develop materials and activities of your own. It also gives suggestions about classroom management and strategies for dealing with different kinds of learners.

Offering both a wide historical perspective and acute insights into such racially charged events as the O. J. Simpson trial, the Clarence Thomas hearings, and the Million Man March, Hutchinson brilliantly counters the image of the black male as a figure entrenched in crime, drugs, and violence. At the same time, he issues a deeply moving call to rethink the way we view African American men.

Far Above Rubies: Wisdom in the Christian Community

This quandary led Mulligan to volunteer to search out God's purpose and standards for education. He found that the question of Christian education is a deep subject, intensely interconnected with Scripture, theology, history, and culture."
