God or Nothing

Robert Sarah - 2015
. . .  The Church of Africa is committed in the name of the Lord Jesus to keeping unchanged the teaching of God and of the Church."— Robert Cardinal Sarah In this fascinating autobiographical interview, one of the most prominent and outspoken Catholic Cardinals gives witness to his Christian faith and comments on many current controversial issues. The mission of the Church, the joy of the gospel, the “heresy of activism”, and the definition of marriage are among the topics he discusses with wisdom and eloquence.Robert Cardinal Sarah grew up in Guinea, West Africa. Inspired by the missionary priests who made great sacrifices to bring the Faith to their remote village, his parents became Catholics. Robert discerned a call to the priesthood and entered the seminary at a young age, but due to the oppression of the Church by the government of Guinea, he continued his education outside of his homeland. He studied in France and nearby Senegal. Later he obtained a licentiate in theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, followed by a licentiate in Sacred Scripture at the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum of Jerusalem. At the age of thirty-four he became the youngest Bishop in the Catholic Church when John Paul II appointed him the Archbishop of Conakry, Guinea, in 1979. His predecessor had been imprisoned by the Communist government for several years, and when Archbishop Sarah was targeted for assassination John Paul II called him to Rome to be Secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. In 2010 Pope Benedict XVI named him Cardinal and appointed him Prefect of the Pontifical Council Cor Unum. Pope Francis made him Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments in 2014.

He demonstrates how the attributes of God--those things God has revealed about himself--are a way to understand the Christian life of worship and service. Because we were created in the image of God, to understand who we are, we need to understand who God is and allow His character and nature to be reflected through us. We are here to serve and adore Him, and we can only fulfill that role by acknowledging who He is. This is the essence of the Christian life and the source of all our fulfillment, joy, and comfort.

The Fate of the Apostles: Examining the Martyrdom Accounts of the Closest Followers of Jesus

Sean McDowell - 2015
Whilst other scholars have written individual treatments on the more prominent apostles such as Peter, Paul, John, and James, there is little published information on the other apostles. In The Fate of the Apostles, Sean McDowell offers a comprehensive, reasoned, historical analysis of the fate of the twelve disciples of Jesus along with the apostles Paul, and James. McDowell assesses the evidence for each apostle’s martyrdom as well as determining its significance to the reliability of their testimony. The question of the fate of the apostles also gets to the heart of the reliability of the kerygma: did the apostles really believe Jesus appeared to them after his death, or did they fabricate the entire story? How reliable are the resurrection accounts? The willingness of the apostles to die for their faith is a popular argument in resurrection studies and McDowell offers insightful scholarly analysis of this argument to break new ground within the spheres of New Testament studies, Church History, and apologetics.

All the King's Horses: Finding Purpose and Hope in Brokenness and Impossibility

Barry Milazzo - 2015
Like that fairytale egg, his second child, Bryson, was suddenly shattered by catastrophic brain-injury. It was predicted that he would never walk or speak, and he would be virtually uneducable.   An unwanted divorce resulted in his raising his children alone.   Financial ruin came and he lost his family home.   Shocking episodes of bullying and abuse caused his impaired son to threaten suicide.   Finally, physical disease and collapse nearly ended this single father’s life.   Tempted to curse God and die in the face of unbearable pain, he chose to rely fully upon God, discovering timeless Scriptural truths which are passed on to the reader in this book.     “…we were burdened excessively, beyond our strength, so that we despaired even of life; indeed, we had the sentence of death within ourselves, so that we might not trust in ourselves, but in God who raises the dead; who delivered us from so great a peril of death, and will deliver us, He on whom we have set our hope.  And He will yet deliver us.” 2 Corinthians 1:8-10  All The King’s Horses will empower you not only to endure, but embrace your trials with hope and faith. Barry shares his journey with brutal honesty rarely seen in Christian books, yet with charm and wit. This inspiring story will make you laugh and it will make you cry. Broken Gods: Hope, Healing, and the Seven Longings of the Human Heart

Gregory K. Popcak - 2015
Gregory Popcak.  “Not THE God—omnipresent, all-knowing, all-powerful—but a god in the classic sense. That is to say, you woke to find that you were perfect, immortal, utterly confident in who you are, where you were going in life, and how you were going to get there. It might seem ridiculous to consider at first, but allow yourself to imagine this truly miraculous transformation.  What would it be like to live without fear? How would it feel to be completely at peace with yourself and the people in your life? Imagine what it would be like to be able to resolve—once and for all—the tension that currently exists between all your competing feelings, impulses, desires, and demands. What would change in your life as a result of your having become that sort of divinely actualized person?” Bold questions are in need of bold answers. And in Broken Gods, a work that is both practical and inspirational, Dr. Greg explores what our deepest desires--and even our darkest desires-- tell us about our ultimate destiny and reveals a commonsense approach to fulfilling our true purpose in life.

A Glorious Dark: Finding Hope in the Tension Between Belief and Experience

A.J. Swoboda - 2015
Then came the tragedy of Friday and, somehow even worse, the silence of Saturday. They ran. They doubted. They despaired. Yet, within the grave, God's power was still flowing like a mighty river beneath the ice of winter. And then there was Sunday morning. Real, raw, and achingly honest, "A Glorious Dark" meets readers in the ambiguity, doubt, and uncertainty we feel when our beliefs about the world don't match up to reality. Tackling tough questions like "Why is faith so hard? Why do I doubt? Why does God allow me to suffer?" and "Is God really with me in the midst of my pain?" A. J. Swoboda puts into sharp focus a faith that is greater than our personal comfort or fulfilment. He invites readers to develop a faith that embraces the tension between what we believe and what we experience, showing that the very tension we seek to eliminate is where God meets us.

Characters of the Bible: Finding My Stories in Their Stories

David Waddell - 2015
After all, many played significant roles in helping Jesus spread the gospel. Most of us find it difficult—if not impossible—to picture ourselves in that disciple-type role because we are sinful and don’t always make the wisest decisions. In Characters of the Bible: Finding My Stories in Their Stories, author David Waddell shares his discovery of his similarity to characters in the Bible. He found a relationship with the woman in John 8:1–11. He saw himself in a crowd of Pharisees urging punishment of a woman who did something they had done or wanted to do. Waddell was the woman looking for love in all the wrong places. He was the woman at the mercy of Jesus who was forgiven of all her sins without defending herself. Waddell realized the connection he had with biblical characters because like him, and like us, they were sinful. And if we’re truthful with ourselves, we can be mean, deceitful, conniving, and abusing, just like many people described in the Bible. Yet God used them for His purposes, and He will use us if we let Him.In Characters in the Bible: Finding My Stories in Their Stories, we can find comfort in knowing we are just as flawed, goofy, wrong, and misdirected as these biblical characters. It is through the lives of these people that we can see so much of ourselves.

Incarnate Grace

Moira Linehan - 2015
Alienated and estranged from her own body, she turns her cancer into “these binoculars, / this new way of looking,” and uses it as a way of fixing herself firmly within the moment. As she travels Ireland and the Pacific Northwest, her busy mind moves from the knot in her breast to the knots in her knitting to the illuminated knots of The Book of Kells to the tossing, knotted surface of the sea; from the margins of her surgery—clean but not ideal—to the margins of illuminated manuscripts. She links the mundane to the mythic, intertwining connections between scripture and nature, storms and loss, winter and light, breast cancer and embroidery. As she returns to her home on a small pond in Massachusetts, she takes with her the fruits of her travels: the incarnate grace of the ordinary.  Vivid and compelling, Incarnate Grace finds beauty in the worst of circumstances and redemption in the fabric of daily life.

i, church

Brett “Fish” Anderson - 2015
But, in many other ways, the church has also been monumental in affecting great systemic change, being first on the scene in crisisand on the forefront of reaching out to and loving well those considered the least of these. To those of you who believe church is the worst thing ever: You’re right! To those of you who believe church is the best thing ever: You’re right! The church was God’s idea and it is the plan He has chosen to bring transformation to a world desperately in need of a deeper experienceof His love. He doesn’t appear to have a plan B. We are it!i call this book, ‘i, church’ because more than a building or a meetingor a list of do’s and don’ts, the church is about the people. It is about me. And it is about you. If you love Jesus and have chosen to follow Him, then you are the church. Let’s figure out together how to be the best church we can be.“Brett Anderson weaves a picture of the church that is stark and real.  He sees through church politics and denominational blinkers and defines the core of what the church is and isn’t and what God desires it to be.” [Bruce Collins, legend and appreciator of good coffee]
