Gaining by Losing: Why the Future Belongs to Churches That Send
J.D. Greear - 2015
Greear pastors. Big givers. Key volunteers. Some of his best leaders and friends. And that's exactly how he wants it to be.When Jesus gave his disciples the Great Commission, he revealed that the key for reaching the world with the gospel is found in sending, not gathering. Though many churches focus time and energy on attracting people and counting numbers, the real mission of the church isn't how many people you can gather. It's about training up disciples and then sending them out. The true measure of success for a church should be its sending capacity, not its seating capacity. But there is a cost to this. To see ministry multiply, we must release the seeds God has placed in our hands. And to do that, we must ask ourselves whether we are concerned more with building our kingdom or God's.In Gaining By Losing, J.D. Greear unpacks ten plumb lines that you can use to reorient your church's priorities around God's mission to reach a lost world. The good news is that you don't need to choose between gathering or sending. Effective churches can, and must, do both.

Preparing for Heaven: What Dallas Willard Taught Me About Living, Dying, and Eternal Life
Gary Black Jr. - 2015
Dallas believed that our mortal lives are preparation for what comes next. He maintained that death is not the end of one life and the beginning of another, but rather a transition during which we continue the spiritual work begun in this incarnation. In his acclaimed books, Dallas explored the Christian life in the earthly kingdom. Yet one topic remained untouched: his vision of heaven. For the first time, Preparing for Heaven illuminates Dallas’s most intimately held views, including the few mystical occurrences he experienced while dying. Informative and moving, Dallas’s final insights challenge us to reconsider our beliefs—that perhaps the line separating the afterlife from this life is not as absolute as we think, and that there is work we must do both now and after our own deaths. And that perhaps our faith is more vibrant—and eternal—than we dare to imagine.

It then builds on this foundation to address the drift toward increasingly impersonal educational models in our own day, affirming the value of personal, face-to-face seminary education for the health of pastors and churches.

Along with summaries by Radio Vaticana (who recorded and transcribed the homilies) and commentary by Father Antonio Spadaro, SJ, these reflections provide moments of inspiration, simplicity, and a glimpse into the papal world very few ever get to experience.

Fighting Satan: Knowing His Weaknesses, Strategies, and Defeat
Joel R. Beeke - 2015
You deserted Satan, and he wants you back. He wants to sift you like wheat. While we should not overestimate Satan’s power, to our peril we underestimate an enemy who is living, intelligent, resourceful, and cunning. Every Christian is in a battle that is fierce, spiritual, and necessary between the kingdom of darkness and the kingdom of the Lord Jesus Christ. We need to know the enemy—his personality, his strategies, his weaknesses, and his defeat at Calvary and his final judgment. In a day when society has in many ways placed itself under Satan’s rule, when Satanism is flourishing in Western nations, when certain branches of the church are preoccupied with “deliverance ministries,” and when others deny the devil’s existence, Fighting Satan is a sober, practical perspective on this vital subject. Joel R. Beeke states, “We must know our enemy. . . . We must know how to withstand him and what spiritual weapons to take up against him. We must defeat him by faith through lives that bear fruit and spread the truth.” With questions for reflection and discussion at the close of each chapter, 'Fighting Satan' is ideal for group and individual Bible study. Table of Contents: Part One – Knowing the Enemy: The Personality and History of Satan 1. Satan in the Bible 2. Satan in Church History, Today, and the Future Part Two – Knowing Satan’s Weaknesses: Fighting Him Defensively and Offensively 3. Building an Unyielding Defense 4. Building an Attacking Offense Part Three – Knowing Satan’s Strategies: His Devices and Their Remedies 5. Satan’s Strategies and Skill 6. Confronting Four Major Strategies of Satan Part Four – Knowing Satan’s Defeat in Our Personal Lives, Churches, and Nations 7. Our Challenge as Believers 8. Our Challenge as Church Members 9. Our Challenge as Citizens Author: Joel R. Beeke (Ph.D. Westminster Theological Seminary) is president and professor of systematic theology and homiletics at Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, pastor of the Heritage Netherlands Reformed Congregation in Grand Rapids, Michigan, editor of The Banner of Sovereign Grace Truth, and author of numerous books. Endorsement: “Joel Beeke’s 'Fighting Satan' anchors in the bedrock of a noble exposition of the Christian life viewed as homo viator (the pilgrim traveler) embattled in a war with Satan at his heels. It is in the same line as John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress, William Gurnall’s Christian in Complete Armour, and Thomas Brooks’s Precious Remedies against Satan’s Devices. Succinct and deeply pastoral, Dr. Beeke’s little volume has all the marks of a Christian classic. Read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest and get ready to fight the good fight of faith. This will help you view the Celestial City and the assurance of Jesus Christ.” — Derek W. H. Thomas, senior minister of First Presbyterian Church in Columbia, South Carolina, and the Robert Strong Professor of Systematic Theology and Practical Theology at Reformed Theological Seminary in Atlanta, Georgia

Rediscovering Discipleship: Making Jesus’ Final Words Our First Work
Robby Gallaty - 2015
Many believers are contemplating in a fresh way what it means to take the Great Commission seriously. Rediscovering Discipleship takes the guesswork out of Christian maturity.Based on insights gained from a decade of personally making disciples, author and pastor Robby Gallaty tackles the two hindrances that keep believers from getting involved in making disciples: ignorance and uncertainty. Since many believers have never been personally disciple, they have no model to guide them in discipling others. Their ignorance of the process fuels their uncertainty, which leaves them crippled from the start. With simple principles that are easy to apply, Rediscovering Discipleship provides readers with the tools to follow the Great Commission—to go and actually make disciples who multiply and make disciples.Gallaty begins with a brief historical overview of the discipleship ministries of influential theologians, preachers, and pastors from years past, and then identifies roadblocks that hinder believers from becoming disciples before offering a step-by-step process for readers to immediately get started on the path to effective disciple making.

Effective Discipling in Muslim Communities: Scripture, History and Seasoned Practices
Don Little - 2015
Often conversion and discipleship are framed by individualistic Western models that do not acknowledge the communal cultural forces that constrain and shape new believers. Effective discipleship requires a more relational, holistic process of Christian identity development and spiritual formation in community. In this comprehensive resource, missiologist Don Little engages the toughest theoretical and practical challenges involved in discipling believers from Muslim backgrounds. He draws on New Testament principles, historical practices and interviews with seasoned disciplers ministering in a dozen countries across the Muslim world. Addressed here are key challenges that believers from Muslim backgrounds face, from suffering and persecution to spiritual warfare and oppression. Also included are implications for the role of disciplers in church planting among Muslims.
The Morning Star: A Message to the Church
Russell M. Stendal - 2015
What does the LORD want? He wants us to do things His way. What is His way? His way is that we go up to the mountain. The LORD is speaking of the mount of His holiness, a “mountain” where everything is done exclusively for Him.The work of the hands of the natural man does not receive God’s blessing, even when they are doing things for God. God’s blessing is like the rain, and when there is no rain, when there is no blessing from God; there is only desert. This is true in the spiritual as well as in the natural. We live in a time of a lot of movement, a flurry of activity and of “works.” And each pastor speaks of the “work” that they are doing, of how many sheep they congregate in their work and how many pay their tithe, etc. For the LORD, many of these “works” are not His house, because it is man’s house. Many are in a spiritual drought; the revelation of God is not flowing, and this dryness reaches the mountains. Mountains denote power and purpose. Each mountain is dry because each leader decided to have his own kingdom; they have decided to make their own fortress. This ensures drought upon the wheat (the message that is sown), upon the wine (the life that is being shared), upon the oil (the anointing), and upon everything the earth produces. In the highest sense, we are the earth, and the LORD wants to sow in us. About the Author Russell Stendal, a former hostage of Colombian rebels, is a lifelong missionary to that same group in the jungles of Colombia. He is an influential friend to military and government leaders in Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, Venezuela, and the United States. Russell’s ministry shares the gospel via twelve radio stations, hundreds of thousands of Bibles, books, and movies distributed through airplane parachute drops, and numerous speaking engagements for groups of leaders, prisoners, and individuals. Russell goes wherever the Lord leads, whether it’s to speak with a president or to go deep into the jungle to help an individual in trouble. He has witnessed thousands commit their lives to Christ.
Building Cathedrals: Urban Discipleship That Works
Ted Travis - 2015
John Perkins: "How do we build incentive in inner-city youth, motivating them toward Christ and a life of meaning and purpose?" Over the next 30 years, Ted wrestled with this question as he and his wife Shelly ministered to hundreds of teens in Denver's Five Points neighborhood- an inner-city community facing the daunting challenges of poverty, gangs, crime, and unemployment. Along the way, Ted pressed biblical principles and tried-in the-trenches strategies into a philosophy of youth leadership development he calls "transformational discipleship." In Building Cathedrals, Ted shares his blueprint for transformational discipleship (as well as accounts of its profound impact on young people) and exhorts today's youth workers to reimagine their ministries and raise up a new generation of visionary urban leaders.

Tragedy Transformed: How Job's Recovery Can Provide Hope For Yours
Gordon Grose - 2015
Tragedy Transformed: How Job's Recovery Can Provide Hope for Yours offers hope for people in such times. Using first-hand interviews with people who experienced tragedy, Grose identifies specific strategies to enable readers to cope--even transform--after such events. Stories of sudden death, attempted suicide, long-term mental illness, and chronic physical pain introduce each chapter. The author then discusses biblical Job's similar experience, and concludes his chapters with self-help advice to enable readers to work through their difficulties. Specifically, he provides suggestions on "How can I live with this?" and "How can I move on?" (e.g., depression, anger with God, grief). When tragedy strikes, one of our most natural responses is to ask, "Why did this happen to me?" Grose shows how Job articulates that and our other most anguished cries in the midst of a storm. He also deals with questions about God's presence and benevolence during such times. In addition, he shares his own family's struggle with chronic physical illness. In this book, Grose draws on his rich experience as a pastor (25 years), and on his counseling service (12 years) to bridge the gap between theological and mental health perspectives. He intends his book to serve any reader willing to reach out for help during tragedy. With practical wisdom drawn from people going through disaster and from Scripture, this book provides hope for recovery, a greater realism, and a deepened relationship with God.

Mathew B. Sims - 2015

They connect us to the “great cloud of witness” who went before us. They give us confidence and boldness as we worship within our churches and homes alongside the saints redeemed by the killed, risen, and reigning King Jesus. In We Believe: Creeds, Confessions, and Catechisms for Worship, Mathew has collected the essential church documents for Protestants: The Apostles' Creed, the Nicene Creed, and the Athanasian Creed; the Dutch Reformed Three Forms of Unity; the Westminster Confession and Shorter Catechism; the London Baptist Confession and Spurgeon's A Puritan Catechism; the Augsburg Confession and Luther's Small Catechism; and the Anglican's Thirty-Nine Articles and an Outline of the Faith.

But its popular meaning and application have become distorted. If God is the Judge of all the earth, His definition of justice and His standards for applying it must be the basis of every creature’s pursuit of it. In A Justice Primer, Randy Booth and Douglas Wilson bring their considerable pastoral experience to the topic. They unfold biblical principles that can be applied among individuals and in the spheres of family, church, and state. Issues including jurisdiction, charges, evidence, and the particularly thorny topic of sex abuse are covered. And all parties—accused and accuser, judge and jury, witness and rubbernecking internet bystander—are reminded that, although justice on earth will never be perfect, the Judge of all the earth will do right, letting no guilt go unpunished and no offended innocence go unavenged.DOUGLAS WILSON & RANDY BOOTH have over seventy years’ pastoral experience between them. Doug has shepherded Christ Church, Moscow, Idaho, almost since its inception and is the author of scores of books. He and his wife, Nancy, have three children and seventeen grandchildren. Great Commission, Great Compassion: Following Jesus and Loving the World
Paul Borthwick - 2015
Jesus commands it, and the world needs it. Word and deed go together. One without the other is not enough. We follow Jesus into all the world, and we follow his example in all we do. Mission mobilizer Paul Borthwick shows how proclamation and demonstration of the gospel go hand in hand. God gives us the Great Commission, Matthew 28's call to go wherever Jesus sends us, making disciples and proclaiming good news to all nations. And we become people of his Great Compassion, Matthew 25's vision for treating others as we would treat Jesus himself, caring for the needy and living justly. Borthwick offers practical ways for us to live out the Great Commission and Great Compassion in every sphere of our lives. Holistic discipleship means learning and looking, praying and giving, welcoming the stranger, simplifying our lives and standing with and for others on God's behalf. Small steps can make a big difference in the mission of God. Will you answer the call?
