Raven: The Balance: Book Two

Nick Shamhart - 2012
Why should the afterlife be any different? We are given a choice when we die to move on to the Source, stay on earth and slowly evolve into more of what we were (good people become angels and bad people become demons), or a chosen few can work to keep the Balance between them. The title character Raven is such a warrior who works to maintain that balance.Malign, the demon responsible for most of the world’s cataclysmic wars, has come to the United States with an army of vampires or, more specifically, demons she has convinced to act as those fabled creatures of the night to sow discord and social unrest. Raven and the other Balance soldiers must track Malign down and in their spare time try to convince the ancient angel Metatron that he is doing more harm than good with his participation in mortal affairs. Tagging along for the ride are a motorcycle gang of millionaire philanthropists, Raven’s fellow Balance warrior Zeus’ younger angelic brother, and the demon Lucifer with his babysitter Gabriel. The novel is written in two styles. Each chapter begins in a soliloquy from the title character Raven, where she tells pieces of her back-story intertwined with philosophical musings on her family life and dealing with loss, with the following bulk of the chapter told in a third person narrative.

Secure the Shadow

Claudia Emerson - 2012
Emerson covers all aspects of the tragedies that, as Keats believed, contribute to our human collective of Soul-making, in which each death accrues into an immortal web of ongoing love and meaning for the living. Emerson's unwavering gaze shows that loss cannot be eluded, but can be embraced in elegies as devastating as they are beautiful. The macabre title poem refers to the old custom of making daguerreotypes, primitive photographs, of deceased loved ones. Other striking poems describe animal deaths -- mysterious calf killings, a hog slaughter, the burial of a dead jay, identifiable / but light, dry, its eyes vacant orbits. Death, as the speaker's heart and mind instruct her, exists in a shadow world. When the body disappears, the shadow also flees. By securing the shadow, the poet finds a representation of the dead's soul, a soul always linked to the body. Hence, Emerson's attention to the minute details of the body's repose -- reflected in the long, related sequence of refrained poems -- never allows its memory to fade.

When Dean returns to Andrei as a ghost, the double punch of losing him and having to watch him founder if he doesn’t move on is almost more than Andrei can bear. Despite dangers in limbo—Jackal Wraiths that devour souls are hunting him—Dean isn’t going anywhere until he helps Andrei track down the missing children. Andrei is in danger as well when he pays dearly to feel Dean’s touch one last time. Time is slowly running out as Dean and Andrei try to say good-bye while they track a killer who’s more than happy to kill again.

Gravesend

Cole Swensen - 2012
65)The poems in Gravesend explore ghosts as instances of collective grief and guilt, as cultural constructs evolved to elide or to absorb a given society’s actions, as well as, at times, to fill the gaps between such actions and the desires and intentions of its individual citizens. Tracing the changing nature of the ghostly in the western world from antiquity to today, the collection focuses particularly on the ghosts created by the European expansion of the 16th through 20th centuries, using the town of Gravesend, the seaport at the mouth of the Thames through which countless emigrants passed, as an emblem of theambiguous threshold between one life and another, in all the many meanings of that phrase.

The Vagrant (Southern Hauntings Saga)

Bryan Hall - 2012
He writes with restraint and sureness. Sometimes he writes with poetry as in this sentence: -There was a strange odor hanging in the air, however, like old books in a trunk – the scent of something very old but very important. I love Hall's ghost stories and his Southern sensibilities. He is a writer to watch."-Billie Sue Mosiman, author of Wireman and Widow"Crate Northgate is that throwback loner I grew up reading and watching on TV. He feels like an old friend come back, only he's a bit... darker, like he's seen way too much."- Armand Rosamilia, author of Dying Days and Death Metal Creighton Northgate is a man shrouded in mystery and on the run from a past he doesn't even fully understand. Blurring the lines between vagabond, enigma, drunkard, and savior, he spends his days staring into the southern legends and paranormal events that most only speak of in hushed, half-believing whispers. In the midst of a sweltering southern day, he attempts to help a homeless man who seems to share his curse; a man haunted by a silent figure from beyond this world who pursues his every step. By the end of the day, Crate discovers that some things are best left alone; some truths best left in the dark. This novelette serves as an introduction to the Southern Hauntings Saga and its central character Crate Northgate, a man whose shadowy past is slowly catching up to him. The first novella in the series will be released late summer 2012.

My Mother Is Now Earth

Mark Anthony Rolo - 2012
. . the memory of my mother came to me like a drifting scent in the breeze, swirling through the branches of a nearby cedar tree. I was drawn back [35 years] to the day I learned she had passed on. But that autumn day of 1973 did not grip me with deep sadness, the burden of never seeing her again. I was looking at that day from a new angle, a distant view that seemed to suggest a new, untold story. I was suddenly more than curious about who my mother truly was in this life and beyond.”Uprooted from family and community in Milwaukee by her husband, a French and Irish construction worker with a drinking problem, Corrine Rolo struggles to raise their seven children on a remote farm near Big Falls, Minnesota. She longs to move back to Milwaukee, or to visit her relatives on the Bad River Ojibwe reservation, at one point threatening to leave the older kids behind and return to her home in the city.Mark Anthony Rolo sifts through potent dreams and childhood memories to recreate a picture of his often conflicted mother during the last three years of her life. She told him a few warm stories of her life on the reservation, but she participated in the family’s casually derogatory banter about their Ojibwe heritage. She spent little time helping Rolo with his schoolwork, even as she wrote voluminous, detailed letters to her family in Milwaukee. She could treat her children harshly and yet also display the fiercest love. With an innocent and sometimes brutal child’s view, Rolo recounts stories of a woman who battles poverty, depression, her abusive husband, and isolation through the long northern Minnesota winters, and of himself, her son, who struggles at school, wrestles with his Ojibwe identity, and copes with violence. But he also shows, with eloquence and compassion, his adult understanding of his mother’s fight to live with dignity, not despair.Mark Anthony Rolo is an enrolled member of the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. He is the former editor of The Circle newspaper.

How will you spend those last moments? Everyone has a dark thought now and then. But sometimes our dark thoughts have us. These thoughts are capable of great evil, but also redemption. Herein lie dark tales, dark nights of the soul, to be read with the lights low and the doors locked. Take the simple complexity of Mondrian, fill it with the passion of Klimt, the psychology of Munch, then look at it all through stereo-blind Rembrandt eyes and convert it into words; that’s the best way I can think of to describe the darkly poetic writing of Martin Reaves. ~ Trent Zelazny, author of Too Late to Call Texas and Butterfly Potion.Show More Show Less

A Connecticut Family's Nightmare

Jason McLeod - 2012
Such was the case in the Fall of 1993, when Linda McLaughlin and her innocent six-year-old daughter Kelly passed by Easton Connecticut's Union Cemetery. Kelly didn’t even know such spirits existed when an apparition materialized and tapped into her consciousness. Nothing could have prepared her or her family for the suffocating terror that they would soon experience when it followed them home. The merciless spirit didn't stop with Kelly. It quickly targeted each and every family member, their pets, and their friends when they were alone and most vulnerable. Then, it targeted the alpha of the family, the wealthy, real estate broker father, who was a natural skeptic and the last person to believe in ghosts. In this re-creation of real the most terrifying case the author had ever experienced, a Connecticut Family is plagued by an evil-natured human spirit and by a group of inhuman, diabolical spirits who infest their home and oppress the family. Will these evil spirits continue to haunt them or will the family find help in ridding them of this terror from beyond the grave? The book explains, in detail, the process of investigating a ‘haunted house’ and what can be done about it. It explains the dangers involved with the negative occult and how dabbling in it can summon darkness and ruin into our lives. Dark Siege is a 467 page recreation of the most terrifying case McLeod has ever investigated. But what makes Dark Siege unique is that it contains an addendum with chapter-by-chapter analysis where McLeod explains the science and spirituality behind the paranormal through Quantum Physics, the Universal Laws of Attraction, Intention and Conscious Manifestation. Both books in the Dark Siege Series are required reading for Bishop James Long's Demonology Course.

A vintage steam engine is appearing along the abandoned, isolated railways of the tranquil Mirambeena Valley, where connecting lines no longer exist. The giant locomotive is the very image of the Diablo, which crashed in the region 50 years earlier but the mystery runs deeper - the train is now picking up passengers WHO NEVER RETURN! Enter Tessa Scott, a high-profile city lawyer with a longing for the bush and a passion for helping out people in trouble. As more and more eyewitnesses vanish without trace, and a former university acquaintance goes missing, Tess heads for Mirambeena, looking for clues and answers to the question on everyone’s lips – is the Diablo material ... or ethereal?

Say It Haint So

Maureen Hardegree - 2012
First it was Jack, the hot teenage ghost. Now it's Zac, an all-too-alive bad boy. Not to mention trouble with Drew, Audrey and the usual BFF dramas. The last thing Heather needs is a new haint on the scene, especially not the ghost of her cantankerous grandfather. Four weeks were all that was left of summer vacation, if you counted Thursday registration the first week of August, and I did. I had made some progress on the summer goal front. 1)My older sister Audrey tolerated my existence more than at the beginning of summer, as long as her friends weren't around and my geeky friend Xavier kept his distance. 2)Drew and I chatted. So at least I was on his radar. But he had a clingy girlfriend I wanted to unwrap from his frame. Then trouble arrived in a muscle car-our neighbors' bad boy grandson Zac. Audrey called dibs on him, which was fine with me. Drew made no bones about disliking him, also fine with me. But for some reason I may never understand, Zac liked freaky me. So you know what that meant-my progress with my sister and the lifeguard of my dreams reached yet another stumbling block. My problems multiplied exponentially at the arrival of another visitor and his sweet pipe tobacco scent-my ghostly grandfather. Just what I needed-a crabby octogenarian haint to complicate everything. Although Georgia author Maureen Hardegree concedes to having all the usual baggage of a middle child, she is NOT a ghost handler. She does, however, believe in connecting with her inner teenager and in feeding her active imagination--it likes Italian food and chocolate. When she's not writing, she's working on costumes for the Northeast Atlanta Ballet . . . or doing the bidding of her husband, daughter, and cats Pixie and Turnip Ann.
