Danika Eriksson storms into my office in her high heels and on her high horse. Her holier-than-thou attitude and accusations should offend me, but instead, I can’t get her out of my head or my heart. Her incomparable drive, take-no-prisoners attitude, and blatant honesty captivate me and hold me prisoner. I should steer clear, but my self-preservation instinct is apparently dead—which is exactly what our relationship will be once she knows everything. It’s only a matter of time. The truth doesn’t always set you free. Sometimes, it just royally screws you.

Sick Woman Theory

Johanna Hedva - 2016
The ‘sick’ part of the Sick Woman speaks to an identity that gets defined by ableism: if you are defined by the care you give and take, you are a person who is unproductive, or a drain on resources, or dysfunctional, or disordered, or incurable, or worthless, etc, ad infinitum – in other words, your embodied existence deviates from ableist standards. Hedva's analysis looks at how ableism is perhaps the most pernicious ideology, because it’s the very bedrock of how we decide whether a person is valued or not. White supremacy, racism, misogyny, transphobia, heteronormativity – all of these things need ableism in order to work because they are means of oppressing people based on an invented hierarchy of superiority and normativity.

The Boy Who Could Run But Not Walk :Understanding Neuroplasticity in the Child’s Brain

Karen Pape - 2016
Karen Pape tells the story of how some children with early brain damage astounded everyone around them. The brain injury they suffered at or near birth had led to motor problems such as the awkward gait we associate with cerebral palsy. Yet they were able to run, kick a soccer ball, tap dance, and play tennis. This was not supposed to happen. It ran counter to the prevailing belief that the brain is hardwired and fixed. When Dr. Pape first shared her remarkable findings, she ran into fierce opposition from mainstream medicine. Yet this courageous neonatologist didn’t back down.In her clinical practice, Pape helped many young brain-damaged children to significantly improve their movement. It led her to ask why some of them could run but not walk with the same ease. Her answer was astounding: By the time they learned to run, their brains had healed. The awkward walking gait was actually a bad habit acquired while the brain was still damaged. This is the power and the beauty of neuroplasticity, the brain’s amazing ability to change and heal. It has revolutionized the treatment of adults who suffer stroke. Now, for the first time, this remarkable book shows that children with a brain injury at or near birth can get better, too. These stories of children’s recovery and improvements are a revelation—surprising, inspiring, and illuminating. They offer real hope for some of the world’s most vulnerable children and a better understanding of how the baby brain grows and recovers.

Amy Silverman - 2016
And that is the case with My Heart Can't Even Believe It, by journalist, blogger, and NPR contributor Amy Silverman. Amy bravely looks at her life, before and after her daughter Sophie was born, and reflects on her transformation from "a spoiled, self-centered brat," who used words like retard and switched lines at the Safeway to avoid a bagger with special needs, into the mother of a kid with Down syndrome and all that her new identity entails. She describes her evolution as gradual, one built by processing her fears and facing questions both big and small about Sophie, Down syndrome, and her place in the world. Funny, touching, and honest, this wonderful book looks at a daughter and her power to change minds and fill hearts with love so deep.

A Beautiful Sight

Sandi Lynn - 2016
It was at that moment I began to experience the world differently from everyone else. I accepted my fate, living my life to the fullest and the best way I know how. Giving up on love was something I had to do because men couldn’t cope with my condition. Then I met him and he changed everything for me. A smart, sexy, and shattered man who hid in the shadows of his own tragedy. A man who kept the better part of himself concealed away from the world. I wanted to show him that life was more than how he saw it. My name is Aubrey Callahan and I am blind. The moment I laid eyes on her, I wanted her. She was beautiful, uncomplicated, and one night was all I needed. People referred to me as “The Iceman” because I was controlling, ruthless, and didn’t give a damn about people’s feelings. I was a user and the only person I protected was myself. Then something happened after a single night with her. The feelings and nightmares that I buried years ago began to resurface. Even though I was a billionaire who could have anything in the world, I couldn’t stop the demons that lived inside me. Aubrey couldn’t see me for who I really was and she deserved better than me. My name is Ethan Klein and I am a destroyed man. For readers 18+

Becoming Friends of Time: Disability, Timefullness, and Gentle Discipleship

John Swinton - 2016
Time structures days, provides goals, shapes dreams--and limits lives. Time appears to be tangible, real, and progressive, but, in the end, time proves illusory. Though mercurial, time can be deadly for those with disabilities. To participate fully in human society has come to mean yielding to the criterion of the clock. The absence of thinking rapidly, living punctually, and biographical narration leaves persons with disabilities vulnerable. A worldview driven by the demands the clock makes on the lives of those with dementia or profound neurological and intellectual disabilities seems pointless. And yet, Jesus comes to the world to transform time. Jesus calls us to slow down, take time, and learn to recognize the strangeness of living within God's time. He calls us to be gentle, patient, kind; to walk slowly and timefully with those whom society desires to leave behind. In Becoming Friends of Time, John Swinton crafts a theology of time that draws us toward a perspective wherein time is a gift and a calling. Time is not a commodity nor is time to be mastered. Time is a gift of God to humans, but is also a gift given back to God by humans.Swinton wrestles with critical questions that emerge from theological reflection on time and disability: rethinking doctrine for those who can never grasp Jesus with their intellects; reimagining discipleship and vocation for those who have forgotten who Jesus is; reconsidering salvation for those who, due to neurological damage, can be one person at one time and then be someone else in an instant. In the end, Swinton invites the reader to spend time with the experiences of people with profound neurological disability, people who can change our perceptions of time, enable us to grasp the fruitful rhythms of God's time, and help us learn to live in ways that are unimaginable within the boundaries of the time of the clock.--David F. Ford, Emeritus Regius Professor of Divinity, Selwyn College, University of Cambridge "Studies in Christian Ethics"

I Am Free

Patricia Ingle - 2016
Medical experts gave little in the way of hope, gravely concerned about the lack of brain activity showing on Patricia’s scans and her inability to breathe unassisted. But Patricia’s family refused to accept she would die. For five long months they rallied around her in the Intensive Trauma Unit in Cork University Hospital, speaking to her as though she were awake, playing music in her ears and keeping her up to date on the latest news and events. Eventually her eyelids flickered. Their determined belief was materialised as she showed gradual signs of life and recognition. They couldn’t believe it. She was going to pull through. She would come back to them. But their initial euphoria was replaced with fear. Their daughter, despite being intellectually intact, had suffered severe brain damage and would live the rest of her life overcoming the difficulties brought about as a result. I Am Free is a story of a young woman who maintains her wicked sense of humour and smiles through all the pain and frustration life has thrown at her. As Patricia Ingle approaches her 28th birthday, she’s excited to release her memoir, I Am Free. Sharing her experiences, she inspires confidence and hope in others as she continues to make progress and amaze experts. The Judge presiding over Patricia’s High Court hearing described Patricia as “the most impressive witness ever to come before the court”. An expert in the Oxford Centre for Enablement said, “I’ve seen your scans - you’re not supposed to be here!” “Patricia is an uplifting inspiration for everyone she meets and a perfect example of how personal determination and the backing of an amazing family can transform even the most hopeless of outlooks into the brightest of futures.” Susie Elliott, Patricia’s Solicitor.

War on Autism: On the Cultural Logic of Normative Violence

Anne McGuire - 2016
Bringing together a variety of interpretive theoretical perspectives including critical disability studies, queer and critical race theory, and cultural studies, the book analyzes the social significance and productive effects of contemporary discourses of autism as these are produced and circulated in the field of autism advocacy. Anne McGuire discusses how in the field of autism advocacy, autism often appears as an abbreviation, its multiple meanings distilled to various “red flag” warnings in awareness campaigns, bulleted biomedical ”facts” in information pamphlets, or worrisome statistics in policy reports. She analyzes the relationships between these fragmentary enactments of autism and traces their continuities to reveal an underlying, powerful, and ubiquitous logic of violence that casts autism as a pathological threat that advocacy must work to eliminate. Such logic, McGuire contends, functions to delimit the role of the “good” autism advocate to one who is positioned “against” autism.

Invisible Wounds: Hope While You're Hurting

Melinda Means - 2016
You live alone with your invisible wounds. It doesn't have to be that way. In fact, God designed us for community. He isn't afraid of our raw honesty, frustration and desperate questioning. He just wants us to come to Him. When we seek the Healer more than the healing, our painful journeys will lead us to freedom, joy and the unshakeable hope that heals. Hope that is not dependent on a result or an outcome. Hope that doesn't disappoint. Melinda Means understands the isolation, questioning, grief and depression that accompanies hidden hurts. For 20 years, she has walked a long, lonely, difficult road of chronic pain and illness — both hers and her son’s. In Invisible Wounds, she transparently shares her struggle with the tough spiritual questions and raw, dark emotions that often accompany suffering. Seven brave, beautiful women share their invisible wounds in these pages, too. Revealing their pain for this book often brought them to tears. Yet, each one gladly went to some very dark, vulnerable places. They believed God wanted to use their heartache to relieve someone else’s. Here are some of the important questions Melinda wrestles with in this book: How could a God who claims to love me allow me to suffer? Does God really see me in my pain? How can I know? Is it possible to embrace the reality I've been given? If so, how? How can overwhelming difficulty lead me to hope? Why should I risk more pain by reaching out to others for support? Why and when should I tell my story? Isn't it time to quit dealing with grief alone? Are you ready to embrace the hope that heals? Scroll to the top of this page and click "Buy Now."

Coming of Age in the Other America

Stefanie DeLuca - 2016
Coming of Age in the Other America shows that despite overwhelming odds, some disadvantaged urban youth do achieve upward mobility. Drawing from ten years of fieldwork with parents and children who resided in Baltimore public housing, sociologists Stefanie DeLuca, Susan Clampet-Lundquist, and Kathryn Edin highlight the remarkable resiliency of some of the youth who hailed from the nation’s poorest neighborhoods and show how the right public policies might help break the cycle of disadvantage.Coming of Age in the Other America illuminates the profound effects of neighborhoods on impoverished families. The authors conducted in-depth interviews and fieldwork with 150 young adults, and found that those who had been able to move to better neighborhoods—either as part of the Moving to Opportunity program or by other means—achieved much higher rates of high school completion and college enrollment than their parents. About half the youth surveyed reported being motivated by an “identity project”—or a strong passion such as music, art, or a dream job—to finish school and build a career.Yet the authors also found troubling evidence that some of the most promising young adults often fell short of their goals and remained mired in poverty. Factors such as neighborhood violence and family trauma put these youth on expedited paths to adulthood, forcing them to shorten or end their schooling and find jobs much earlier than their middle-class counterparts. Weak labor markets and subpar postsecondary educational institutions, including exploitative for-profit trade schools and under-funded community colleges, saddle some young adults with debt and trap them in low-wage jobs. A third of the youth surveyed—particularly those who had not developed identity projects—were neither employed nor in school. To address these barriers to success, the authors recommend initiatives that help transform poor neighborhoods and provide institutional support for the identity projects that motivate youth to stay in school. They propose increased regulation of for-profit schools and increased college resources for low-income high school students.Coming of Age in the Other America presents a sensitive, nuanced account of how a generation of ambitious but underprivileged young Baltimoreans has struggled to succeed. It both challenges long-held myths about inner-city youth and shows how the process of “social reproduction”—where children end up stuck in the same place as their parents—is far from inevitable.Stefanie DeLuca is associate professor of sociology at Johns Hopkins University.Susan Clampet-Lundquist is associate professor of sociology at Saint Joseph’s University.Kathryn Edin is Bloomberg Distinguished Professor of Sociology at Johns Hopkins University.

NeuroDiversity: The Birth of an Idea

Judy Singer - 2016
The word itself was just one of many ideas in this work, her 1998 Honours thesis, a pioneering sociological work that mapped out the emergence of a new category of disability that, till then, had no name. And in the process, prefigured a new paradigm within the disability rights movement of the time. The work attempted a panoramic view of this new terrain from within a post-modern, social constructionist, feminist, disability rights perspective. Its chapters encompassed a brief history of autism, self-exploration of Singer’s life in the middle of three generations of women “somewhere on the autistic spectrum” and her research as a participant-observer on InLv, an online community of people on the spectrum. At the same time it offered a critique of what Singer perceived to be a certain tendency towards social-constructionist fundamentalism within the disability movement, which, she argued, limited the potential of the new paradigm. This volume reproduces the original thesis with the addition of a new introduction, which gives the background to the creation of the work and offers some thoughts on the current neurodiversity movement.

Andee Joyce - 2016
At age 4, a year after she was diagnosed with autism, she was put on the Good Brain Diet, which her parents make a living marketing. But when she develops an autistic fixation on Amy Zander, an obscure teenage bossa nova singer and drummer from the 1960s, she begins to question whether her “remission” is real, discovers her own musicianship, and makes her first real friend--all under the “guidance” of Amy, who appears to her as a spectral version of Amy’s 15-year-old self. Soon Cynthia transforms herself from Cynthia Ann Butt, loser and failure, into Cyan Beaut, a daring and exciting percussionist, singer, and songwriter, who is happy and proud to be autistic and artistic. But if her transformation is successful, and the truth about her autism comes out, not only will her parents hate her for it, but her entire family will be at risk of financial ruin. The escalating conflict with her parents contributes to the “disease” process that finds her more and more under the spell of “Spectral Amy,” who leads her to places she never expected to go.

In a Dream, I Dance by Myself, and I Collapse

Carolyn Zaikowski - 2016
Unnamed narrators rise and fall, weaving in and out of each other while silently nodding to something larger and also, as yet, unnamed. Though structured around the breakdown of voice, mind, and narrative itself, In a Dream, I Dance by Myself, and I Collapse is also a witness to what happens when these three things must pull themselves up and face forward again.“Equal parts vulnerable, logical, affirming, and schematic, In a Dream, I Dance by Myself, and I Collapse is a frothing workbook with ‘Floating fractals everywhere.’ Like a vending machine stocked with formal innovation, fabulist imagery, and rigorous self-examination, Zaikowski drops goodies all the way through. This is a must for anyone invested in how a self processes the world–and how the world processes a self.”—Amy King“Case studies. Quizzes. Announcements. Definitions. Interviews. Lists. Dreams. Carolyn Zaikowski’s In a Dream, I Dance by Myself, and I Collapse amalgamates these things into a workbook that is a novel doing a headstand. The emotional depth, generosity, and playfulness of this book makes want to write, and read on.”—Claire Donato

A Very Capitalist Condition: A history and politics of disability

Roddy Slorach - 2016
In recent years, it has become associated with unemployment and dependence on benefits. But how were people we now call disabled treated in earlier societies? This book examines the origins and development of disability and highlights the hidden history of groups such as disabled war veterans, deaf people and those in mental distress. In a wide-ranging critique, Roddy Slorach describes how capitalist society segregates and marginalises disabled people, turning our minds and bodies into commodities and generating new impairment and disability as it does so.He argues that Marxism not only helps provide a fuller understanding of the politics and nature of disability, but also offers a vision of how disabled people can play a part in building a better world for all.

That night the Reds hit seven home runs and Manager Dusty Baker said, “Seems you’re our good luck charm, Teddy.” I guess that’s why they invited me back.
