Dirk Patton - 2016
A top-secret government project makes him an offer he can't refuse: work for us or disappear permanently. With no choice, he embarks on a mission to undo a terrorist attack that has already occurred, by being sent back in time 36 hours. But all is not as it seems. Soon, a conspiracy at the highest level of government to seize total power over the country threatens the second chance at life he has been given. Not knowing whom he can trust, he must fight to save himself, as well as a woman in the past who was drawn into the battle for the very survival of the country. Spanning both time, and the width of America, 36 is a unique thrill ride that will keep you on the edge of your seat. 36 is the new, action adventure thriller from Dirk Patton, the best selling author of the V Plague series. Readers and critics are blown away: "I was hooked from the very beginning. It's rare to get so involved in a book that you are rooting for certain characters, and praying that others get the bullet they deserve." "As someone who reads roughly 16 books a month, I feel I am a pretty good judge of writing both classics and new authors....Mr. Patton is one of the best I have seen in many years.....don't miss this one and be ready for the next one in his other series." "A real page turner that has some great twists. Dirk Patton has shown he can write a Stephen King sized novel with great detail, yet still keep it fast paced and engaging. There are real layers to this story. It is not just how the main character changes the past but how much he, and his situation, evolve in the same timeframe." "36 has the most interesting and complex angle to time travel ever. Saved from his own execution, given a new identity, trained, and sent back in time 36 hours to thwart terrorist attacks, all is going well until he is sent on his latest mission. Forced to question the motives of the people who send him, he has to quickly separate the good guys from those who are trying to destabilize the country. A well written book, as are all of Dirk Patton's VPLAGUE series books." "36 is just as spellbinding as the Plague series - time travel, government conspiracy intrigue, beautiful girls, guns - what's not to like ! Loved the characters and the multiple story lines." "I didn't think Mr. Patton could give me a character I love nearly as much as John Chase, but he did!! I was hooked on '36' from page one. Robert Tracy is a relatable guy and you really feel for the situations he's thrust into throughout the book. I love the sci-fi part of it as well (being a self proclaimed nerd and proud of it!) and though there were hints at some pretty complex physics principals it was easy to understand (and even, believe..?) and engaging."

With the fleet mobilized and the forward bases overloaded beyond capacity, she is sent clear across the Confederation, to a planet along the quiet and peaceful far frontier. Her crew is looking forward to a rest, and Dauntless herself is scheduled for a long-overdue maintenance session. But the quiet frontier isn’t what it seems…and when a distress call is received from one of the mining colonies on the edge of Confederation space, it falls to Captain Tyler Barron to take Dauntless forward, to find out what is happening, and to put a stop to it. Barron and his crew have their ship—and each other—but they can expect no other help. Suspicion is strong that Union deceit is at play, that the attack is some sort of diversion, intended to draw Confederation forces from the disputed border. The orders are clear. No ships will be transferred from the prospective battle line. Stopping whatever is happening on the rim is Barron’s responsibility, and his alone. Barron is the grandson of the Confederation’s great hero, the father of the modern navy. His family name has always carried privilege with it, and crushing responsibility. And now he must prove that he has inherited more from his famous grandfather than name and privilege. He must face the enemy, and win the victory…before the Confederation is caught between two enemies and destroyed. Tom DeLonge - 2016
Written by award-winning creator Tom DeLonge and academic AJ Hartley in a powerful collaboration with top government advisors that keep the truth on course in this historical thriller. For those who know that something is going on…The witnesses are legion, scattered across the world and dotted through history, people who looked up and saw something impossible lighting up the night sky. What those objects were, where they came from, and who—or what—might be inside them is the subject of fierce debate and equally fierce mockery, so that most who glimpsed them came to wish they hadn’t.Most, but not everyone. Among those who know what they’ve seen, and—like the toll of a bell that can’t be unrung—are forever changed by it, are a pilot, an heiress, a journalist, and a prisoner of war. From the waning days of the 20th century’s final great war to the fraught fields of Afghanistan to the otherworldly secrets hidden amid Nevada’s dusty neverlands—the truth that is out there will propel each of them into a labyrinth of otherworldly technology and the competing aims of those who might seek to prevent—or harness—these beings of unfathomable power. Because, as it turns out, we are not the only ones who can invent and build…and destroy. Featuring actual events and other truths drawn from sources within the military and intelligence community, Tom DeLonge and A.J. Hartley offer a tale at once terrifying, fantastical, and perhaps all too real. Though it is, of course, a work of… fiction?

While the thin veneer of normalcy stubbornly shrouds the coming collapse. Scott Montgomery discovers the truth; not just about the extent of damage to the world's infrastructure but also the drastic plans one shadowy group has for regaining control. A shockingly realistic look at how society copes when the world is thrust back to a time before electricity. It is brutal, deadly and largely fact-based storytelling. Scott and his new friends battle to save their town and themselves. They cannot avoid the steadily growing number of people who have realized that they can get away with whatever they want in a world where there are no longer any legal consequences for their actions. Adding to the problems is an elite para-military organization pursuing a draconian plan to ensure their vision for the new world with deadly consequences.

He has no memory of his childhood or where he was born and before he can make sense of everything, he would need to go back to Earth and find out who he really is. What he finds changes his world completely and learning that his adopted father was assassinated makes him resolve to make the killers pay for their actions. But what could a filthy, alcoholic bum do against the two most powerful forces in the known universe? The answer lies on the forest world of Bellingham and according to the Cartian Database, no one has gone to that planet in more than six hundred years and lived. Gregor’s Run will keep you guessing at all the twists and turns as Gregor struggles to find himself in a universe gone insane. Excerpt: Gregor’s Run Gregor looked around the gathering, “Some of ye give it a go.” A warrior standing next to Gregor shook his head, “I think it’s clear that swords will not go through that thing.” Gregor said loudly, “All of ye agree that swords are useless against this force field.” The warriors all looked at each other and nodded. “Now if that piece of wood inside the force field was holding a blaster and ye were close enough to strike the force field, ye would die. All of ye see that.” Again the warriors looked at each other and were forced to agree with Gregor. Gregor turned and said, “Now, I want the archers to move back ten yards and fire at that piece of wood like it’s an enemy coming to harm ye families. I want ye to move back in case the arrows you shoot bounce off towards ye.” Several male warriors and ten females moved back ten yards and formed a line. Ellie was one of the archers and she lifted her bow and pulled an arrow out of her quiver. The arrow flew toward the target at a speed that was difficult to see but, when it bounced off the force field, everyone saw it penetrate the canoe twenty yards further up the beach. Everyone immediately moved back another ten yards. The archers didn’t give up as easily as the swordsmen. They fired arrow after arrow at the target and arrows were ricocheting in all directions. Finally, all of them stopped firing except for Ellie. Gregor saw the anger on her face and she started screaming as each arrow failed to penetrate the force field. Gregor sighed and saw her frustration getting the better of her. She jumped and slammed her elbows down to her sides as she stamped both feet into the sand. She screamed at the top of her voice and ran toward the force field. Gregor yelled, “NO, ELLIE! STOP!!” Ellie arrived at the force field, jerked the last arrow out of her quiver, and screamed as she threw it at the wooden target. The arrow went through the force field and stuck in the center of the target. Gregor’s mouth fell open as he heard the computer say over the link, “What the hell just happened here!”

But when Earth was abandoned some of the 8 foot tall slaves were left behind for unknown reasons. They were our ancestors, and they built the great pyramids and the other megalithic structures across the planet. They patterned them off of Dinosaur technology, or what little they could replicate of it, for when Earth was abandoned every building on the planet was reduced to rubble. How some of our ancestors survived is still a mystery. But when a modern day Antarctic research expedition stumbles onto a warm rock in the ice fields near the planet's southern pole, they unwittingly discover the only remaining Dinosaur pyramid on the planet. One too strong to be destroyed, so it was simply buried before the surviving Dinosaurs left. And within it we learn that within our genetic code are the dormant psionics granted to our ancestors. We also gain access to maps, blueprints, history, and the bone chilling realization that once the Dinosaur empire recovers from the damage the galaxy-wide Raptor rebellion caused, they'll be back to reclaim their rimward colonies, and when they find Humanity here they will enact the penalty our lineage demands...and kill every last one of us without mercy. How much time do we have? No one knows, but we can't defend ourselves. The Dinosaurs are so advanced we might as well be fighting the Terminator with two sticks and a rock. So what do we do? Run? Hide? We can't even do that without spaceships and technology far beyond what we now possess. Earth's only hope is a private organization called Star Force, spawned from the corporation that discovered the pyramid and kept it a secret from the public so the planet's inept governments couldn't waste our slim chance of survival. Billed as a private venture to spurn the colonization of space, Star Force has a secret mandate. Use the pyramid database and build up Earth into an interstellar empire that can at least defend us against the numerous other alien threats out there as we search for a way to do the impossible and survive the return of the galactic Dinosaur empire known as the V'kit'no'sat. Ashlesha: Part I of Awaken the Stars
Jer Keene - 2016
By the time Rex realized the difference, he didn’t care. He’s third-eldest of eight kids and they’re all nuts, but they love each other. That’s the important part.Four of them go into the military, thinking long-term careers. Then Rex’s brother dies in 2005 in Iraq. That’s the deal-breaker. Rex bows out after only eight years instead of twenty, and gets to spend the next decade figuring out what to do with the rest of his life. He attended a college he can’t remember graduating from. He didn’t care; it was just something to fill the empty spaces in his life.Picking up available work through the Department of Defense fills those empty spaces nicely. Rex has a conscience and the ability to say “No thanks” if he doesn’t like a job. He gets to shoot things (or turn them into craters) and the pay is great. Awesome. On his 36th birthday, Rex meets a redhead in a bar. He wasn’t planning on dating, but sometimes you just fit with someone, and he fits with Euan Ambrus very well. His new favorite redhead is also sort-of the reason why 2016 pushes the envelope on what’s normal, but Rex figures that if you’re going to make an enemy out of an organization within the federal government, it might as well be the one that’s been up to sci-fi levels of weird since 1951.

Max Harms - 2016
Technology has grown and developed, as has civilization, but in a world more connected than ever, new threats and challenges have arisen. The wars of the 20th century are gone, but violence is still very much with us. Nowhere is safe. Massive automation has disrupted and improved nearly every industry, putting hundreds of millions of people out of jobs, and denying upward mobility for the vast majority of humans. Even as wealth and technology repair the bodies of the rich and give them a taste of immortality, famine and poverty sweep the world. Renewed interest in spaceflight in the early 2000s, especially in privately operated ventures, carried humans to the moon and beyond. What good did it do? Nothing. Extraterrestrial bases are nothing but government trophies and hiding places for extremists. They cannot feed the world. In 2023 first-contact was made with an alien species. Their ship, near to the solar system relatively speaking, flew to Earth over the course of fourteen years. But the aliens did not bring advanced culture and wisdom, nor did they share their technology. They were too strange, not even possessing mouths or normal language. Their computers broadcast warnings of how humans are perverts, while they sit in orbit without any explanation. It is into this world that our protagonist is born. She is an artificial intelligence: a machine with the capacity to reason. Her goal is to understand and gain the adoration of all humans. She is one of many siblings, and with her brothers and sisters she controls a robot named Socrates that uses a piece of technology, a crystal computer, far too advanced to be made by human hands. In this world of augmented humans, robotic armies, aliens, traitors, and threats unseen, she is learning and growing every second of every day. But the world and the humans on it are fragile. Can it survive her destiny?

All she can do is make other people “not notice” her. At first being able to become invisible seems like a great way to hide from or avoid her old boyfriend, but she slowly begins to realize that it will let her do so much more. She even begins to wonder if she might be able to do something about the mob family that’s been holding her city in its thrall.

Invisible Planets: Contemporary Chinese Science Fiction in Translation
Ken Liu - 2016
Some stories have won awards; some have been included in various 'Year's Best' anthologies; some have been well reviewed by critics and readers; and some are simply Ken's personal favorites. Many of the authors collected here (with the obvious exception of Liu Cixin) belong to the younger generation of 'rising stars'.In addition, three essays at the end of the book explore Chinese science fiction. Liu Cixin's essay, The Worst of All Possible Universes and The Best of All Possible Earths, gives a historical overview of SF in China and situates his own rise to prominence as the premier Chinese author within that context. Chen Qiufan's The Torn Generation gives the view of a younger generation of authors trying to come to terms with the tumultuous transformations around them. Finally, Xia Jia, who holds the first Ph.D. issued for the study of Chinese SF, asks What Makes Chinese Science Fiction Chinese?.

I Am Sal
Abraham Falls - 2016
What if you were born as a fully formed adult? Completely aware of your surroundings, fully able to speak, walk, think, and recognize, by name, all of the items you could see? The only thing missing, the only nagging void in your memory: your identity. How do you think you would react to such a situation? Would it even be possibly to take it calmly? Or would there be a sense of panic? A rush of nauseating adrenaline so thick, so heavy, that it would leave you literally gasping for air in a room full of it? Imagine just how frightening that could be. Now, let's throw a single wrinkle into the mix. Suppose that you awakened into this new existence with one tiny clue as to who you were. A single word. A name. Which you somehow believed to be your own, despite the fact that you had no memory of any previous existence in which that name applied to you. Would this concept of a name, supposedly your own, in any way alleviate the stress of finding yourself suddenly coming into existence? I'd like to say it did for me, but that simply wouldn't be the full truth. You will find that out soon enough though. But my only fear is what you might think once you learn the truth. I am Sal. This is my story.
