Together, the renowned surgeon and award-winning writer Philip Yancey shed fresh light on a gift that none of us want and none of us can do without.

Believing God

Beth Moore - 1995
Is it really working? God’s intention all along has been for the believer’s life to work. From divine perspective toward terrestrial turf, God meant for his children to succeed. . .Are our Christian lives successful? Are they achieving and experiencing what Scripture said they would? In a recent sermon my son-in-law preached, Curt told us the only way we were going to impact the world and the next generation is to prove that our faith in Christ is real and that it works. For countless Christians I’m convinced it’s real. My concern is whether or not we have the fruit to suggest it works.”—Beth Moore; Believing God

Gospel Medicine

Barbara Brown Taylor - 1995
In this new collection of sermons she practices the old-fashioned art of gospel home remedies like a true evangelist, summoning with piercing clarity and wit the Old and New Testament stories that have the power to mend our spirits, strengthen our weaknesses, and restore us to wholeness. Scripture comes to life in the contemporary people and places of which Taylor speaks. Georgia apple-growers become God's sharecroppers of the gospel parable; through Mary's embracing of her role as God-bearer we are dared to take risks in our own discipleship; in Jonah's angry stand-off with God we see reflections of our own struggles with a God who is more forgiving than we want him to be; with tender awe after years of waiting Sarah wipes her hands on her apron and goes to tell Abraham she is to bear a child. Through the stories of Scripture, Taylor addresses with moving simplicity the contemporary wounds of anger, abandonment, fear of judgment, and a longing for home, healing, and mercy.

Wise Words: Family Stories That Bring the Proverbs to Life

Peter J. Leithart - 1995
The characters in each story are as varied as the biblical proverbs they reveal. Meet a servant with an important mission and magic shoes, or find out what happens when Ivy bumps into a talking rabbit in the forest. Sure to delight children ages five and up (but no promises they'll be asleep by the time the story's over).FROM THE PREFACE:"My intention in Wise Words was to write stories that would appeal to children as stories; that would challenge parents who read to their children; that would illustrate biblical proverbs; and that would borrow imagery, plots, characters, settings, and themes from the Bible. Whether my stories appeal to children--other than my own, of course, who are deeply prejudiced--or challenge adults is, I suppose, for children and adults to judge."

God Is for Us

C. Baxter Kruger - 1995
Anderson Professor of Theology and Ministry, Fuller Theological Seminary "When I picked up "God is for Us" I read it through in one sitting, in an hour. I could not tear myself away from the sheer goodness of the triune God that Baxter Kruger conveys in this short book. But then I had to go back and read it carefully through again, in order to allow the deep truths to penetrate my life afresh. Here is a clearly presented exposition of the profound truth that we are created to be with God forever " - Graham Buxton Senior Lecturer and Head of Ministry, Tabor College, South Australia ""God is for Us" is a must read for those working with damaged people. As flowers open up to the sun, so wounded souls open to the light of God's goodness. Many mentally unwell patients have been transformed by the reality of God's goodness to us in Jesus Christ as laid out in this little book." -Dr. Bruce Wauchope Medical Practioner, Bedford Clinic, Adelaide, Australia C. Faith Alone: The Evangelical Doctrine of Justification

R.C. Sproul - 1995
And justifying faith, a work of God's grace and individual merit, gives saving faith, adds the Roman Catholic Church. "No." shout Martin Luther and his theological descendants. "Christians are justified by faith through God's mercy alone. To add our merit to God's grace destroys the gospel." R. C. Sproul solemnly warns Evangelicals to again hear that cry. Some Evangelical and Catholic leaders ignored the central issue of justification by faith in the document "Evangelicals and Catholics Together: The Christian Mission in the Third Millennium." That document is only one indicator, says Sproul, that Protestants are increasingly unaware of or unconcerned about this vital distinctive. After decades of scurrilous caricatures and misinformation, Roman Catholics and Protestants are finally speaking to each other, and this is revealing a greater variety of viewpoints within both camps. It is also revealing (a) how little most Protestants know about their own convictions and (b) with what great ease they find the concerns raised by the Reformation to be simply irrelevant. How can this be? Has Rome's position changed? In fact is has not. The Vatican II documents as well as the new Catechism of the Catholic Church reinvoke the theological position of the Council of Trent, condemning the gospel of justification by an imputed righteousness. If it is not Rome that has altered its position in favor of the gospel, then it must be the other partner that has moved from its earlier position.

E. Stanley Jones - 1995
    E. Stanley Jones suggests that life in any other way is a muddled, maddening, and impossible way to live. Throughout the centuries we have lost the Kingdom as a clearly defined and workable system for order and influence in our daily lives. We have reduced the Kingdom by putting it into narrower molds, a refuge now, a present security, a future hope, anything but the Kingdom as Jesus preached it - God's total answer to man's total need now." Dr. Jones shows us how to claim our spiritual heritage and the abundant life promised us by embracing the Kingdom and Person of Jesus. He suggests how our experience with God and His Kingdom should be taught and shared in the life of the individual, in the life of the church and in the nations of the world.

Meetings with Mary

Janice T. Connell - 1995
In this exquisite and inspiring volume, Janice T. Connell chronicles authenticated Marian apparitions and messages Mary has brought from God--as mother, comforter, Queen of Angels, and Prophet of the Apocalypse.Drawn from scripture, legend, and never-before-published eyewitness accounts, these are personal stories--the author's own, and her interviews with other visionaries--filled with beauty, wonder, and joy. Meetings with Mary ranges from Elijah's vision of Mary eight hundred years before her birth to the world-famous children of Medjugorje in Bosnia, whose encounters with her began in 1981 and continue daily. Here also are lesser-known, deeply touching encounters with the Mother, from an office worker in Holland to a Japanese nun, from a Jewish banker in Rome to an awestruck crowd of visionaries, few of them Christians or of any other faith, in Egypt.Meetings with Mary asks also: as the millennium draws near, shadowed by disasters, disease, and brutal civil warfare, are Mary's frequent appearances a signal to the faithful? Perhaps she is calling us all to join her now on a voyage toward the eternal shores of peace, joy, and abiding love. . . . "[Connell is] passionate about prayer and sharing her love of Jesus'mother. . . . She has a way of simplifying complex theology."--Rocky Mountain News

On the Mystical Life: The Ethical Discourses: Life, Times and Theology Vol. 3

Symeon the New Theologian - 1995
The first two volumes translated St Symeon's Ethical Discourses, while this book seeks to place the teaching of the discourses in their proper context, both among Symeon's other writings and with regard to his sources in the Tradition. Included thus is a sketch of Symeon's life and times, together with an extensive discussion of his thought, particularly against the background in the ascetical, mystical, and theological literature of the Christian East prior to the tenth century. Just as he always insisted he was, the New Theologian emerges as a thoroughly traditional representative of central themes in Greek patristic thought, in particular of the doctrine of deification (theosis) as summing up the Christian hope. Even his claims to charismatic authority emerge as fully within monastic tradition dating back at least to the fourth century. These claims appear most clearly in his Letter on Confession which is appended to the present work.

The Precise Parallel New Testament: Greek Text — King James Version — Rheims Bible — New International Version — New Revised Standard Version — New American Standard Bible — Amplified Bible

Anonymous - 1995
Comparing these translations verse by verse brings to light important differences in language and interpretation among seven works based on the same original language documents. The translations included in The Precise Parallel New Testament have all at one time been considered the most accurate versions of their eras. This volume reveals how the perception of accuracy has changed over the years. The emergence of new scholarship and the growing importance of issues such as inclusive language have forced revisions of older versions such as the King James and the Rheims. These changes have caused more contemporary translations to emerge including The New American Standard, considered the closest approximation to a word-for-word translation of the original texts, and The Amplified Bible, which reflects word for word accuracy in a different way by providing alternative translations of certain words within the text to make their meaning clearer. The Precise Parallel New Testament includes translations spanning the widest range of Christian perspectives. The Rheims and the more contemporaryNew American Bible are preferred by Catholics. The New International Version and The New American Standard present a more evangelical view in their interpretation. The New Revised Standard Version is favored by mainline Protestants for its accuracy and sensitivity to issues such as inclusive language. This volume gives remarkable insight into the effects time and differet faith orientations have had on translation of this fundamental work. The Precise Parallel New Testament is an invaluable resource for readers with a deep interest in the study of language and the Bible. It is also an excellent reference tool for pastors and language scholars. * Gives insight into the influences of different faiths and social views on translation of the Bible. * Presents seven of the most well-known Bible translations side by side for comparison with the original Greek.

The Unknown God: Negative Theology in the Platonic Tradition: Plato to Eriugena

Deirdre Carabine - 1995
One of its greatest strengths, perhaps the greatest, is that the author makes clear that none of the persons concerned, Hellenic, Jewish or Christian, was engaged in the pursuit of a philosophical abstraction, or the heaping of rhetorical superlatives on God. They were rather concerned to present the origin of the universe as an intimately present living reality which infinitely transcends our thought and speech. This, combined with careful attention to the varieties of negative theology and its relations with positive, and the particular difficulties experienced by the members of the various traditions involved, makes the book the best introduction to the negative theology available."" -A. The Life and Teaching of Jesus Christ

James S. Stewart - 1995
He left nothing in writing at all. He committed himself and his teaching simply to the hearts and memories of the men who knew and loved him. And they did not fail him. The four little books that we call Gospels are our primary and practically our only sources of information about the life and the words that have changed the world. We may wish the story had been told with greater fullness and detail; but we know that, short as it is, it is enough. It has given Christ to every race and age. This book, by a man whose work has allowed him to discuss religion with people all over the world, gives solid answers. After more than two decades of listening to questions about Jesus' claims and objections to Christian doctrine, author Ajith Fernando responds to the arguments with Jesus' own words and miracles and the biblical accounts about Him. But rather than just offering proof texts, he stands Christ--and Christianity--face to face with those competing idealogies and shows the truth. In doing so, he forges an apologetic that proves the legitimacy of our faith and validates the absolutism of Christianity.

The argument covers some central authorities in the period from Augustine to John of the Cross.

Steps for Guidance

Peter Masters - 1995
Some say it comes by dreams, visions, and words of knowledge. Others say that God does not have a specific plan for His people, but allows them to take their own decisions as long as they do so in a wise and moral way. By contrast with these ideas, this book presents from Scripture the time-honoured view that Christians must seek God's will in all the major decisions of life. The author outlines six biblical steps for finding God's will, giving special attention to key areas such as courtship and marriage, possessions and leisure activities. Under what circumstances may Christians seek advancement in career and wealth? Does the Lord determine which church fellowship a believer should join? When is it wrong to leave a church, and when is it right? Clear biblical answers are given.

The Corinthian Body

Dale B. Martin - 1995
Other members of the Corinthian church, however, viewed the body as hierarchical—as a microcosm of the universe—and were not particularly concerned about body boundaries or pollution. These differing views of the human body (and also of the church as the body of Christ) led to differing opinions on a variety of subjects—including the role of rhetoric and philosophy in a hierarchical society, the eating of meat sacrificed to idols, prostitution, sexual desire and marriage, and the resurrection of the body. Martin explores these conflicts by drawing on ancient medical writings, modern anthropological approaches, and feminist and ideological methods of critical analysis. He shows how Paul's understanding of the body prevailed among the less well-educated inhabitants of the Roman Empire, who occupied relatively low socioeconomic levels. The minority who espoused the ideas of hierarchy, on the other hand, were usually of higher social status and were better educated. And it was along these same class lines, Martin argues, that the Corinthian church itself was divided.
