Taneum Bambrick - 2019
    Bambrick began writing poems in order to document the forms of violence she witnessed towards the people and the environment of the Columbia River. While working there she found that reservoirs foster a uniquely complex community--from fish biologists to the owners of luxury summer homes--and became interested in the issues and tensions between the people of that place. The idea of power, literal and metaphorical, was present in every action and encounter with bosses and the people using the river. The presence of a young woman on the crew irritated her older, male co-workers who'd logged, built houses, and had to suffer various forms of class discrimination their entire lives. She found throughout this experience that their issues, while not the same, were inherently connected to the suffering of the lands they worked. Introduction by Sharon Olds.

    This collection suggests that a person is like a world, full of mysteries and wonders–and equally in need of an encyclopedia, a compendium of everything known. The long title sequence offers entries such as “The Sun” (“There is one mind in all of us, one soul, / who parches the soil in some nations / but in others hides perpetually behind a veil”), “The Elephant” (“How to explain my heroic courtesy?”), “The Pigeon” (“Once startled, you shall feel hours of weird sadness / afterwards”), and “Randall Jarrell” (“If language hurts you, make the damage real”). The mysteriously emotional individual poems coalesce as a group to suggest that our natural world is populated not just by fascinating creatures–who, in any case, are metaphors for the human as Chiasson considers them– but also by literature, by the ghosts of past poetries, by our personal ghosts. Toward the end of the sequence, one poem asks simply, “Which Species on Earth Is Saddest?” a question this book seems poised to answer. But Chiasson is not finally defeated by the sorrows and disappointments that maturity brings. Combining a classic, often heartbreaking musical line with a playful, fresh attack on the standard materials of poetry, he makes even our sadness beguiling and beautiful.

The Muslim Brotherhood in the Obama Administration

    Representatives Michele Bachmann, Trent Franks, Louie Gohmertt, Tom Rooney and Lynn Westmoreland asked federal inspectors general if the fact that Huma Abedin, Hillary Clinton’s deputy chief of staff, has three close family members who were intimately connected to the Muslim Brotherhood might be affecting U.S. foreign policy, they were called “McCarthites” and “Islamophobes.” But as Frank Gaffney shows in this shocking pamphlet, it is actually worse than these members of Congress imagined. Abedin was herself deeply involved in Brotherhood organizations in the U.S. and she is, moreover, only one of many individuals with Islamist ties now working in sensitive government roles. Gaffney tells who they are, how they are making U.S. social and political institutions friendlier to Islamism, and how they may have tilted U.S. foreign policy in the Brotherhood’s direction.
