    And they were all true. I'd come back from distant shores and speak of my adventures. So much so in fact that people used to say, "You should write a book." All of our experiences – family, school, work, the books we read, the newspapers we peruse, the music we listen to, our friends, our social life, the opinions of those around us, religion, sports we play or watch, those we love and those who love us, those we desire and those who desire us, those we travel with, our hopes and dreams and ambitions and achievements, our triumphs and disasters - go into a metaphorical cooking pot that we carry with us throughout our lives. All these ‘ingredients’ make up our Soup of Life. Now, when making a soup, once you’ve added an ingredient, it’s forever blended in and you can’t take it out again. You add a sprinkling of finely chopped garnish; cumin or oregano, and you can never take that ingredient out again. Never, ever, ever. So say at the age of six you add black pepper or rosemary or hatred or love or comedy, from then onwards it’ll always be part and parcel of your ‘soup.’ And as you add more ingredients the ‘recipe’ of your life evolves, and before you know it you can’t taste the coriander or the love any more, but it’s still there at a deep subliminal level. Remember that. Some people may not add hatred until they’re in their twenties, and most of us never add it at all.

    Although the Pakistan-militant connection has received widespread attention only in recent years, it is not a new phenomenon. Pakistan has, since its inception in the wake of World War II, used Islamist militants to wage jihad in order to compensate for severe political and material weakness. This use of militancy has become so important that it is now a central component of Pakistani grand strategy; supporting jihad is one of the principal means by which the Pakistani state seeks to produce security for itself. Contrary to conventional wisdom, the strategy has not been wholly disastrous. It has achieved important domestic and international successes, enabling Pakistan to confront stronger adversaries and shape its strategic environment without the costs and risks of direct combat, and to help promote internal cohesion to compensate for its weak domestic political foundations. Recently, however, these successes of Pakistan's militant strategy have given way to serious problems. The militant organizations that Pakistan nurtured over the decades are increasingly exceeding its control; continued support for jihad diverts scarce resources from pressing domestic projects, impeding the country's internal development; and the militant campaign's repeated provocations have led India to adopt a more aggressive conventional military posture. As Paul Kapur shows in Jihad as Grand Strategy, these developments significantly undermine Pakistani interests, threatening to leave it less politically cohesive and externally secure than it was before. Thus, despite its past benefits, the strategy has outlived its utility, and Pakistan will have to abandon it in order to avoid catastrophe.     It argues that it is not the assets a militant group has, but rather how it acquired them that matters in explaining the variation in these actors' abilities to militarily resist and politically recover from confrontations with far more powerful adversaries. Groups that rely on marketing campaigns to secure local support and regional patronage do far better than those that rely on coercion or even barter. The book develops a typology of organizations based on their foreign and domestic policies, which has interesting implications for other non-state actors, such as ISIS. For example, the first book is an action adventure starting with the initial attacks, the second deals with the aftermath and the revenge attacks getting more personal, then the third is more of an assassination thriller, as they act on information acquired in the second, and so on. Q: And they’re all shorter than most novels? A: Each day is about half the length of a regular novel, although many authors are writing shorter works these days. When a story doesn’t need to be 100,000 words, why not write it in 30-40,000? You see this with James Patterson and his “Bookshots” range, which are shorter, incredibly fast-paced novellas. Same with Lee Child’s Jack Reacher shorts. That’s the kind of pace and tone I’m aiming for with the TIER Unit books. Q: The story features a series of attacks by Islamic fundamentalist terrorists. Are you worried at all by notions of “political correctness?” A: I think “political correctness” has lost its meaning over the years. The term has been hijacked and twisted into something that suggests “being nice” to each other or “showing respect” is somehow a bad thing. In real life, Islamic terrorism is a clear and present threat to the whole world, so I don’t believe it is “politically incorrect” to write a conspiracy story about that. By that same token, the TIER Unit books portray a number of Muslims as decent folk, which I do not believe is “political correctness.” There ARE Islamic terrorists in the world and there ARE Muslim-Americans fighting to keep the country safe.
