Heads of the Colored People

Nafissa Thompson-Spires - 2018
Some are darkly humorous—from two mothers exchanging snide remarks through notes in their kids’ backpacks, to the young girl contemplating how best to notify her Facebook friends of her impending suicide—while others are devastatingly poignant—a new mother and funeral singer who is driven to madness with grief for the young black boys who have fallen victim to gun violence, or the teen who struggles between her upper middle class upbringing and her desire to fully connect with black culture.Thompson-Spires fearlessly shines a light on the simmering tensions and precariousness of black citizenship. Her stories are exquisitely rendered, satirical, and captivating in turn, engaging in the ongoing conversations about race and identity politics, as well as the vulnerability of the black body. Boldly resisting categorization and easy answers, Nafissa Thompson-Spires is an original and necessary voice in contemporary fiction.

The Best American Short Stories 2018

Roxane Gay - 2018

Meet Behind Mars

Renee Simms - 2018
For example, in "Rebel Airplanes," an L.A. engineer works by day on city sewers and by night on R-C planes that she yearns to launch into the cosmos. The character-driven stories in Meet Behind Mars offer beautiful insight into the emotional lives of caretakers, auto workers, dancers, and pawn shop employees. In "High Country," a frustrated would-be novelist considers ditching her family in the middle of the desert. In "Dive," an adoptee returns to her adoptive home, still haunted by histories she does not know. Simms writes from the voice of women and girls who struggle under structural oppression and draws from the storytelling tradition best represented by writers like Edward P. Jones, whose characters have experiences that are specific to black Americans living in the late twentieth and twenty-first centuries. One instance of this is in "The Art of Heroine Worship," in which black families integrate into a white suburb of Detroit in the 1970s.The stories in this collection span forty years and two continents and range in structure from epistolary to traditionally structured realism, with touches of absurdity, humor, and magic. Meet Behind Mars will appeal to readers interested in contemporary literary fiction.

A Bright and Pleading Dagger

A pizza shop worker goes on a series of visceral dates with her gynecologist; a slighted lover coughs up a forgotten childhood toy; an artist unknowingly becomes the subject of an intrusive admirer’s lust; a woman has a heated staring contest with the world’s oldest man. Powerful and precise, Rivas’s stories highlight the unreality within the real, simultaneously evoking humor, outrage, and awe.Contest judge Rigoberto González writes: “With this marvelous collection of short stories, Rivas places her finger on that pressure point, where adventure and dangerintersect, where fantasy and reality cross wires, and where desire ebbs and flows to the delight—or chagrin—of her female protagonists. Each story, unpredictable and startling, leaves a lasting impression. A Bright and Pleading Dagger is truly a compelling and unforgettable journey into the dark but poignant experiences of women.”

The Dogs of Detroit

Brad Felver - 2018
The 14 stories of The Dogs of Detroit each focus on grief and its many strange permutations. This grief alternately devolves into violence, silence, solitude, and utter isolation. In some cases, grief drives the stories as a strong, reactionary force, and yet in other stories, that grief evolves quietly over long stretches of time. Many of the stories also use grief as a prism to explore the beguiling bonds within families. The stories span a variety of geographies, both urban and rural, often considering collisions between the two.

Houses Under the Sea

Caitlín R. Kiernan - 2018
Lovecraft first invited colleagues such as Frank Belknap Long and Robert Bloch (among others) to join in his creation of what has come to be known as “The Cthulhu Mythos” (over Lovecraft’s less invocative name of “Yog-Sothery”), dozens of authors have tried their hand at adding to this vast tapestry with varying degrees of success. Some, like the then teen-aged Ramsey Campbell, used the Mythos as a starting point to his own career while still finding his own authorial voice (The Inhabitant of the Lake and Less Welcome Tenants, Arkham House 1964); others, like Stephen King and Neil Gaiman, did so at the height of their careers, paying homage to an author who had been such a tremendous inspiration to them. But no one, absolutely no one, has contributed such a body of brilliant and profoundly original work to the Mythos as has Caitlín R. Kiernan. The stories are fully illustrated with over 30 new full page illustrations by Richard A. Kirk, John Kenn Mortensen, and Vince Locke. The full wraparound dustjacket and frontispiece are by Piotr Jablonski. In this remarkable collection the author has selected over two dozen of her best Lovecraftian tales ranging from 2000s “Valentian” to her more recent classic “A Mountain Walked” as well as including the complete Dandridge Cycle, as well as a new story, “M Is for Mars.” In short, this is a cornerstone volume for Kiernan fans and Mythos devotees alike. This edition is limited to 500 signed copies, each signed by Caitlín R. Kiernan, Michael Cisco, S.T. Joshi, and the artists: Piotr Jablonski, Richard A. Kirk, John Kenn Mortensen, and Vince Locke. At times, he writes so little that the ideas seems to have trickled down to the tip of the language. Then there is no space for anything else. He tells a story in a way that it seems he has become one with the audience. Therefore, you keep finding yourself in the company of a reader. Not once does his descriptions of events and people become judgemental. This is an incredible feat. He just keeps feeding our curiosities. He does not create a suspense to suddenly interest the reader with a mystery. Instead, he lets the mystery unfold, which creates the space for the story to move forward.

Stream System: The Collected Short Fiction of Gerald Murnane

Guo isn't afraid to take on even the thoroughly weird in the most delightful way. This is what it's like to see a genre revivified."--Brian Evenson"OUR COLONY BEYOND THE CITY OF RUINS is an absolute delight, a wild collection that unsettles as much as it entertains. Arkdust

Alex Smith - 2018
Arkdust is a guide through the washed-out apocalypse already upon us. Keep this in your back pocket, tucked between calculus text books, hidden from your stepdad, and left to rot on a public transit seat. These stories from Alex Smith, a founding member of Metropolarity, the art/activist sci-fi collective, and curator of the queer Afrofuturist sci-fi reading Laser Life, embrace the ever morphizing strange, the characters on the margins selling their wares at the bazaar on a moon colony, the lone assasin that targets our hearts. Uncommon Miracles

Julie C. Day - 2018
A family of matriarchs collects recipes for the dead. A woman gains an unexpected child in the midst of a bunny apocalypse. An outcast finds work in a magical slaughterhouse. Julie C. Day’s debut collection is rife with dark and twisted tales made beautiful by her gorgeous prose and wonderfully idiosyncratic imagination. Melding aspects of Southern Gothic and fabulism, and utilizing the author’s own scientific background, Day’s carefully rendered settings are both delightful and unexpected. Whether set in a uniquely altered version of Florida’s Space Coast or a haunted island off the coast of Maine, each story in this collection carries its own brand of meticulous and captivating weirdness. Yet in the end, it is the desperation of the characters that drives these stories forward and their wild obsessions that carry them through to the end. It is Day’s clear-eyed compassion for the dark recesses of the human heart and her dream-like vision of the physical world that make this collection a standout.

Better Times

Sara Batkie - 2018
Women, sometimes displaced, often lonely, are at the heart of these stories. In Better Times Sara Batkie focuses on the moments in women’s lives when the wider world is wrapped up in other matters: a father and daughter, separated by time and an ocean, dreaming of each other; a girl in a home for “troubled women” imagining the journey of the first dog in space; a phantom breast returning to haunt a woman after her mastectomy; a young woman giving birth to a litter of eggs. Such are the ordinary women weathering extraordinary circumstances in Better Times. Divided into three sections covering the recent past, our current era, and the world to come, the stories gathered here—with characters stymied by loneliness, motherhood, illness, even cataclysmic climate change—interrogate the idea that so-called better times ever existed, particularly for women.

The Buried Secrets of Peonies

Mernegar Dorgoly - 2018
In “Peonies”, we pull the curtain back to watch the painful yet hopeful evolution of a girl becoming a woman, and then that woman uncovering family secrets she never could have imagined. Within the frame of these potent, unpretentious, diamond-tight stories, readers feel the author's ultimate humanity. Ranging from the dark corners of prison cells to the grief of a mother to the captive bonds of love, this collection culminates in a fiercely passionate letter from the narrator to her mother. These eight stories are searingly truthful, deeply felt, and ruthless in their desire to expose human complexity and frailty. This is a powerful new addition to serious short story collections in American fiction.

Tara Campbell - 2018
Smart, funny, and thought-provoking, this book contains all the magic and surprise of a genie's bottle. Open it up and you'd best be prepared to fly." -Kathy Fish, author of Rift (with Robert Vaughan), Together We Can Bury It, & Wild Life "In this shapeshifter of a collection, poems melt off the page or morph into short stories, stories start off as one thing and wind up quite another, teeth march down streets and women are abducted by giant bees and secreted away to hidden islands. A playfully constructed collection that delivers real emotion in an often strangely wrapped package." -Dave Housley, author of Massive Cleansing Fire, If I Knew the Way I Would Take You Home, & Commercial Fiction "A journey into the fantastic, the whimsical, and the what-if, Campbell's writings constantly surprise and delight." -Tara Laskowski, author of Bystanders (winner of the Balcones Fiction Prize) & Modern Manners for your Inner Demons "From her first microfiction piece, 'Monkey Roast, ' I knew I was in for something special. Saints and Charlatans

Sarim Baig - 2018
It explores how the increasing intolerance of society compels individuals to become either saints or charlatans, and how it’s sometimes hard to tell the difference. In the titular story, we meet a line of saints of dubious credentials, a quack who explains the philosophy of charlatanism, and a poet whose sainthood remains a mystery; in ‘Bouganvillea’, a boy’s adventure to impress his hero leads him to an unexpected discovery; in ‘The Third one from the Left’, Bubloo Hijazi’s path to mediocrity is set against the trials and tribulations of the loafers of a snooker club and its owner's cunning way to success; in ‘The Path of the Man-Eater’, the strange fates of a group of s strangely talented people is a prelude to the invasion of fanaticism in a boy's fantastical world; in ‘Band in the Rain’, a man, while lost in the labyrinth of Rampura, ponders on how an individual’s pain translates into art, and finds the answer to be as tortuous as the lanes ahead; in ‘The Lord of Garbage’, an old trash picker teaches his young apprentice the art of picking, and what it means to possess something that’s been thrown into the garbage. The characters in these nine stories move between the fictional neighbourhood of Rampura in Lahore, and the village of Suratwala which feeds it. Nobody gets to belong to Suratwala village and then mind their own business, and this makes it a big problem for the families who’ve “made it”, who’ve left Suratwala and moved to the city. Written in a classical storytelling style, Saints and Charlatans’ features a cast of memorable, endearing, vividly sketched characters that pull you in, embrace you with their lively, authentic voices, and leave you bereft on the other side of the covers.

In each of these stories, Bama documents the emerging influences on the lives and consciousness of people.
