Trooper: The Bobcat Who Came in from the Wild
Forrest Bryant Johnson - 2018
Readers who enjoy . . . Irene Pepperberg’s Alex and Me, will find much to love here” (Library Journal). When desert tour guide Forrest Bryant Johnson went on his daily walks into the Mojave, all was usually peaceful and serene. But one beautiful summer day in 1987, Forrest heard a cry of distress. Following the cries, he came upon a small bobcat kitten who was injured, orphaned, and desperately in need of help. Forrest took his new feline friend home—just for a night. But the little “trooper” clearly needed more time to recoup, and that single night turned into a week, and eventually nineteen years. Trooper became a part of the Johnson family. Over the years, Trooper lived his nine lives to the fullest. He explored desert flora and fauna, befriending kit foxes, jackrabbits, and desert tortoises while getting into plenty of mischief along the way. Trooper became a “big brother” to a stray tabby named Little Brother, as the pair embarked on adventures and misadventures. He became a beloved patient at his local vet, and cherished housemate of Forrest’s wife, Chi. And Trooper even managed to melt the icy heart of a tough guy neighbor. But most of all, Trooper became Forrest’s best friend, as the two shared each other’s worries, musings, joys and laughter. “Heartbreaking, warm, beautiful, and emotional, this story didn’t just tug on my heart; it stole it. A must-read for any cat, or indeed animal, lover.” —Rachel Wells, author of A Cat Called Alfie

She lives by herself in her quaint house, in a quiet community, with a white picket fence in Central New Jersey. When she is not writing her next book or hosting book-signing events with her publicist, she is cleaning litter boxes and baking Cannolis…but never at the same time, of course! In this first installment, on a typical day in Anna’s somewhat-perfect life, a book-signing event turns her world upside down. Is it a case of mistaken identity or was she just being paranoid? After being stalked for weeks, Anna quickly finds herself literally ‘tied up’, fighting for her life, and desperate to get back home to her cats; all while unwittingly falling in love with the detective who was trying to save her. How she finds her way out of this mess is anyone’s guess! Find out more about Anna and the dangerous cases of murder and mayhem she ‘haphazardly’ gets herself into, in the new Anna Romano Mystery Series.

Michael Craft - 2018
a dashing gay architect ... a talking cat.
What could possibly go wrong?
In the idyllic little town of Dumont, Wisconsin, wealthy widow Mary Questman adopts an exotic stray cat, Mister Puss, who begins to talk to her. At least she thinks so. Mary's young friend, gay architect Brody Norris, soon finds another reason to worry about Mary's judgment when she decides to help finance a bizarre weight-loss enterprise called FlabberGas, the invention of a flamboyant local dermatologist, Dr. Francis Frumpkin. Brody's skepticism is partially overcome when Dr. Frumpkin commissions him to design the first of a planned chain of FlabberGas clinics. But then, during a public demonstration of Frumpkin's gimmicky new treatment, a volunteer is gassed to death in a hideous mishap that turns out to be no accident. It was murder, all right. Suspects abound. And Brody is drawn into the role of amateur sleuth, assisting Sheriff Thomas Simms.Funny and tender, thoroughly tangled, with a chilling motive at its core, the mystery comes to a jolting conclusion when Brody pieces together tiny, overlooked details and helps Sheriff Simms name the killer. Along the way, though, Brody himself gets a little help--or so it seems--from the chatty Mister Puss.

A Cat Called Grievous
R.L. Maizes - 2018
L. Maizes’s “A Cat Called Grievous,” we find a familiar situation: a couple, unable to have children and growing bored with one another, adopt a cat and name it Grievous. Or, the cat adopts them, as it so often goes. People are fond of saying that “dogs have masters and cats have servants,” a statement that is mostly true, and, I will argue at the risk of revealing myself as a cat person, makes cats richer subjects for fiction. Dogs are loyal, and cats are indifferent. Give a cat an owner, and there is already a conflict. - Halimah Marcus About the Author: R.L. Maizes is the author of We Love Anderson Cooper, a short story collection, and Other People’s Pets, a novel, which are forthcoming from Celadon Books (Macmillan). Her stories have aired on NPR, and have appeared in the literary magazines Witness, Bellevue Literary Review, Slice, Blackbird, among others. Her essays have been published in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and elsewhere. Her cat, Arie, bears no resemblance to Grievous. About the Publisher: Electric Literature is an independent publisher amplifying the power of storytelling through digital innovation. Bunny Blue, Where Are You? (My Truly Most Favorite Fluffy Friend Book 2)
Pamela Tomlin - 2018
A child may experience grief and loss. A parent may frantically try to find or replace the loss. Emma searches for her lost friend, Bunny Blue, in this sweet story. Her worry, concern and dedication to the search, is quite sincere. Maybe this book, and/or the first book in this series, "My Truly Most Favorite Fluffy Friend," might be of some comfort to you and your child as you make the transition from one lost lovey to a new found friend. I hope so! Whether your child has lost a friend, has a cherished friend, or just enjoys imagination and play, this story is sure to bring a smile. An article in "Smart Parents," August 16, 2017 by, Jassmin Peter-Berntzen discusses "5 Ways to Help Junior Handle Losing His Toy." The article recommends that you : "Acknowledge the feelings of grief. Don't quickly shove a substitute toy at them. Don't keep their hopes up that the toy might be found. Allow the child time to grieve, and offer comfort." Experts say that a child who has loved a toy can usually transfer that love to another toy. So you may be able to offer another toy to replace the loss, but this will need to be done with time, love, care and understanding. Reading this story with your two to five year old may also help them with the development of language skills. The story makes use of directional words. Children as young as two years old may begin to learn the concept of directional words such as: under, top, left, right, up, down, etc. Use of hand signals as you read the story may help with this language development. "Bunny Blue, Where Are You"? is a beautifully illustrated story to be treasured by you and your child. If you are musical, you may want to use the melody of "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star," and sing along with Banjo Bear as he looks for Bunny Blue during the story! Watch for the next book in this series, "I Do Not Like Bugs!", coming soon. Other books by this author include: "Snore Songs," a whimsical children's rhyming story, sure to put a smile on your face. "TOKENS: Teaching Our Kids Each New Sunrise," a booklet for busy parents of preschool children who want easy to read and easy to follow parenting tips to help with the discipline of their young child.

His Name was Brownie: Close Encounters with Dogs, People, and Other Ridiculous Animals
Judi M. Roller - 2018
Peopled with multiple Marley dogs (and Marla’s as well), nearly all readers will recognize their dog or cat, son or daughter, spouse—maybe even themselves— as the featured characters barrel their way through their laughable adventures. Collies and Irish wolfhounds bound through the pages; but they have many companions, including a tuxedo cat, a mastiff, a demented border collie, two Siamese cats, two twenty-five pound attack cats, the monkey from Hell, a Labrador retriever nicknamed “Blockhead” because of his habit of getting his head stuck in plastic milk cartons, black witch moths, and a bufo. Their escapades take them through beautiful areas of Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Hawaii, before the clan finally lands in Wisconsin near the Wisconsin River. Dr. Judi Roller has been breeding and showing collies and Irish wolfhounds for many years, garnering AKC championships for her dogs and several group placements along the way. She has also enjoyed judging multiple AKC matches. Her previous book, "The Politics of the Feminist Novel," won an Outstanding Academic Book award; and she has published literary criticism as well as book reviews and occasional poems and a short story. Her B.A. cum laude was earned at Bowling Green State University; and her doctorate came from the University of Michigan, even though she is a home-grown Ohio State Buckeye, which became a challenge while she was teaching Freshman English during her graduate work at Michigan. Now retired from university administration, she has more time for dogs, golf, travel, bridge, and reading.
