The Complete Illuminated Books
William Blake - 1974
For Blake, religion and politics, intellect and emotion, mind and body were both unified and in conflict with each other: his work is expressive of his personal mythology, and his methods of conveying it were integral to its meaning. There is no comparison with reading books such as Jerusalem, America, and Songs of Innocence and of Experience in Blake's own medium, infused with his sublime and exhilarating colors. Tiny figures and forms dance among the lines of the text, flames appear to burn up the page, and dense passages of Biblical-sounding text are brought to a jarring halt by startling images of death, destruction, and liberation. Blake's hope that his books would obtain wide circulation was unfulfilled: some exist only in unique copies and none was printed in more than very small numbers. Now, for the first time, the plates from the William Blake Trust's Collected Edition have been brought together in a single volume, with transcripts of the texts and an introduction by the noted scholar David Bindman. Includes: Jerusalem; Songs of Innocence and of Experience; All Religions are One; There is No Natural Religion; The Book of Thel; The Marriage of Heaven and Hell; Visions of the Daughters of Albion; America a Prophecy; Europe a Prophecy; The Song of Los Milton a Poem; The Ghost of Abel; On Homers Poetry and] On Virgil; Laocoon; The First Book of Urizen; The Book of Ahania; The Book of Los.
Vertical Poetry: Recent Poems
Roberto Juarroz - 1974
Winner of the Colorado Book Award for Translation upon its release, this book brings to English-speaking audiences new work by this brilliant Argentine poet of whom Octavio Paz says, "Each of Juarroz's poems is a surprising verbal crystallization: language reduced to a drop of light." In Juarroz's work we encounter the vertical depths of language, the inner wells.
Mr Cogito
Zbigniew Herbert - 1974
A collection of poems by the recipient of the Jerusalem Prize includes the full sequence of forty poems originally published in Pan Cogito.
Selected Poems
James Tate - 1974
He is a most agile poet in a precarious world. Life is alarming and absurd, but properly considered that absurdity reveals, often with laughter, the something else by which we live. The poems are about our world, our wrecked, vexed love for it. Tate has been described as a surrealist. If that is what he is, his surrealism issues in a vision of a world delivered back to itself by his unillusioned subversion and candor.

Building The Barricade and Other Poems
Anna Świrszczyńska - 1974
In . . . Anna Swir there is a similar empathy and forgiveness." -Czeslaw Milosz"In the same way that memory gave birth to the muses, Anna Swir crafted exquisite mnemonic miniatures thirty years after the Warsaw Uprising, miniatures that allowed human hope to shine through bloody rubble. Reading Swir, one longs to know this heroic poet, who, like Whitman, nursed humans broken by war. Piotr Florczyk translates the poems in Building the Barricade with chilling precision, constructing equations that become magical spells to address the twentieth century and serve as cautionary tales for the twenty-first." -Sandra Alcosser"To translate Anna Swir is to translate a cemetery's stories as nakedly and starkly as any human can. It is to tread on hallowed, stunned ground-the ground of an earth stricken not by its own nature but by our species' own warring, bombarding instincts. Only reverence could lead someone properly into the reaches of Swir's numbed witness of the atrocities of WWII. Piotr Florczyk has the reverence and skill to bring Swir into English verse with crystalline witness and warnings." -Katie Ford"These short poems by Anna Swir, keenly translated by Piotr Florczyk, have the urgency and clarity of a poet staring back at a burning building from which she somehow escaped, except the building is Poland and she is looking back in memory, talking to its war-torn corpses, and to us, the lucky recipients of these explosive poems." -Edward HirschThis collection includes Piotr Florczyk's striking new translations of Anna Swir, featuring the best of her poems about the Warsaw Uprising, as well as poems that focus on the human body and Swir's experiences of love and family.
Turtle Island
Gary Snyder - 1974
All, however, share a common vision: a rediscovery of this land, and the ways by which we might become natives of the place, ceasing to think and act (after all these centuries) as newcomers and invaders. Of particular interest is the full text of the ever more relevant "Four Changes," Snyder's seminal manifesto for environmental awareness.
Alligator Pie (Collector's Edition)
Dennis Lee - 1974

Revolution of the Word: A New Gathering of American Avant Garde Poetry, 1914-1945
Jerome Rothenberg - 1974
His most recent publication, Poems for the Millennium (University of California Press, 1995) reevaluates modernism from a global perspective. Shaking the Pumpkin (1972) and America a Prophecy (1973) diversified the canon long before "multi-culturalism." And his 1974 Revolution of the Word remains an unparalleled collection of American avant-garde writing from between the wars. Nearly twenty-five years after its first publication, this long out-of-print collection is still xeroxed for college courses because it contains works that are otherwise unavailable (by Else von Freytag-Loringhoven, Abraham Lincoln Gillespie, et al.), and because it places some of the most popular writers of the century - e.e cummings, T.S. Eliot, Gertrude Stein - in their original context: the anarchistic experimentation of early modernism. Authors include: Walter Conrad Arensberg, Bob Brown, e. e. cummings, H. D. (Hilda Doolittle), Marcel Duchamp, T. S. Eliot, Else von Freytag-Loringhoven, Marsden Hartley, Mina Loy, Marianne Moore, Ezra Pound, Carl Sandburg, Gertrude Stein, Wallace Stevens, William Carlos Williams, Hart Crane, Harry Crosby, Robert Duncan, Kenneth Fearing, Charles Henri Ford, Abraham Lincoln Gillespie, Eugene Jolas, Walter Lowenfels, Jackson Mac Low, Charles Olson, George Oppen, Kenneth Patchen, Kenneth Rexroth, Charles Reznikoff, Laura Riding, Louis Zukofsky

New Skin for the Old Ceremony
Leonard Cohen - 1974
On it, he begins to evolve away from the rawer sound of his earlier albums, with violas, mandolins, banjos, guitars, percussion & other instruments giving the album a more orchestrated, but nevertheless spare, sound. A remastered CD was released in 1995. The album is silver in the UK, but never dented the Billboard Top 200. Spain, Take This Chalice from Me and Other Poems: Parallel Text edition
César Vallejo - 1974
Challenging, intense, and difficult to translate, Vallejo's work has often been overshadowed by his fervent endorsement of communism. R. Ammons's long poems—following Tape for the Turn of the Year and preceding Garbage—that mark him as a master of this particular form. The sphere in question is the earth itself, and Ammons's wonderfully stocked mind roams globally, ruminating on subjects that range from galaxies to gas stations. It is a remarkable achievement, comparable in importance to Wallace Stevens's Notes Toward a Supreme Fiction.
