Profit First: Transform Your Business from a Cash-Eating Monster to a Money-Making Machine

Mike Michalowicz - 2014
The problem is, businesses are run by humans, and humans aren't always logical. Serial entrepreneur Mike Michalowicz has developed a behavioral approach to accounting to flip the formula: Sales - Profit = Expenses. Using Michalowicz's Profit First system, readers will learn that:- Following 4 simple principles can simplify accounting and make it easier to manage a profitable business by looking at bank account balances.- A small, profitable business can be worth much more than a large business surviving on its top line.- Businesses that attain early and sustained profitability have a better shot at achieving long-term growth. With dozens of case studies, practical, step-by-step advice, and his signature sense of humor, Michalowicz has the game-changing roadmap for any entrepreneur to make money they always dreamed of.

The Education of a Value Investor: My Transformative Quest for Wealth, Wisdom, and Enlightenment

Guy Spier - 2014
In this fascinating inside story, Guy Spier details his career from Harvard MBA to hedge fund manager. But the path was not so straightforward. Spier reveals his transformation from a Gordon Gekko wannabe, driven by greed, to a sophisticated investor who enjoys success without selling his soul to the highest bidder. Spier's journey is similar to the thousands that flock to Wall Street every year with their shiny new diplomas, aiming to be King of Wall Street. Yet what Guy realized just in the nick of time was that the King really lived 1,500 miles away in Omaha, Nebraska. Spier determinedly set out to create a new career in his own way. Along the way he learned some powerful lessons which include: why the right mentors and partners are critical to long term success on Wall Street; why a topnotch education can sometimes get in the way of your success; that real learning doesn't begin until you are on your own; and how the best lessons from Warren Buffett have less to do with investing and more to do with being true to yourself. Spier also reveals some of his own winning investment strategies, detailing deals that were winners but also what he learned from deals that went south. Part memoir, part Wall Street advice, and part how-to, Guy Spier takes readers on a ride through Wall Street but more importantly provides those that want to take a different path with the insight, guidance, and inspiration they need to carve out their own definition of success.

He not only helped create one of the world’s biggest companies— Amway—but he did it from the ground up, with little but his deep faith in God to guide his decisions and keep his hopes alive. Now, following on the success of DeVos’s bestselling books about the world of business, he reveals his personal story for the first time ever. Simply Rich is a candid telling of his journey from rags to riches, from a small start-up business to giant success, and from doubts to dreams come true. Born to second-generation Dutch immigrants in rural Michigan during the Depression, DeVos learned early on the importance of leadership as well as partnership. While still in school, he met a classmate and neighbor, Jay Van Andel, who became his best friend and eventually his business partner. A lasting friendship sustained their fledgling business, which grew into the international success of Amway. In addition to stories of his business success, DeVos shares candidly about his marriage and family, his experiences as a motivational speaker and author, his ownership of the NBA’s Orlando Magic, and his philanthropic, religious, and political endeavors. Inspiring, fascinating, and full of heart, Simply Rich is the astonishing rags-to-riches story that few can tell. Through his amazing accomplishments as both a businessman and faithful, generous soul, DeVos reveals the true meaning of success.

The Value of Simple: A Practical Guide to Taking the Complexity Out of Investing

John Robertson - 2014

With a focus on developing good processes to minimize the room for human error and step-by-step instructions, the book will walk you through the elements of managing your finances for the long term: how to devise a savings plan, stick to it through automation, determine how to allocate funds balancing risk and reward, invest using low-cost index funds, track your investments, and deal with the inevitable issue of taxation. Putting your money to work can look suspiciously like math at times, but this book lays out a simple approach that anyone can follow. Inside you will find tools and templates, along with easy suggestions and rules-of-thumb to help prevent analysis paralysis and get you started fast. Control what can be controlled; minimize fees and effort. Investing doesn’t have to be complex to be successful. Keep it simple and you will succeed.

Hallam shows three cutting edge index fund strategies. He compares costs and services of different brokerages, whether in the U.S. or offshore. And he shows every nationality how to invest in the best products for them. Some people want stability. Some want strong growth. Others want a dash of both. This book also answers the following questions:How much money do I need to retire? How much should I be saving each month? What investments will give me both strong returns, and safety? The Global Expatriate's Guide To Investing also profiles real expats and their stories. It shows the mistakes and successes that they want others to learn from. It's a humorous book. And it demonstrates how you can make the best of your hard-earned money.

Included are:-Satoshi Nakamoto Emails and Posts on Computer Forums Presented in Chronological Order -Bitcoin Fundamentals Presented in Layman's Terms -Bitcoin's Potential and Profound Economic Implications -The Seminal Paper Which Started It All The Book of Satoshi provides a convenient way to parse through what Bitcoin's creator wrote over the span of the two years that constituted his "public life" before he disappeared from the Internet . . . at least under the name Satoshi Nakamoto. Beginning on November 1st 2009 with the publication of the seminal paper describing Bitcoin, this public life ends at about the time PC World speculated as to a possible link between Bitcoin and WikiLeaks, the infamous website that publishes leaked classified materials. Was there a connection? You be the judge. Nakamoto's true identity may never be known. Therefore the writings reproduced here are probably all the world will ever hear from him concerning Bitcoin's creation, workings, and theoretical basis. Want to learn more about Bitcoin? PACE: A Small Business Owner's Guide to Complete Cash Flow Clarity

Jesse Mecham - 2014
Learn a unique and powerful method to keep more of your money, eliminate the cash flow roller coaster, and get a good night's sleep. The PACE method is the missing link between the person that knows how (and is good at) generating revenue, but just can’t seem to get ahead. The concepts are powerful, and the implementation simple (one hour to read the book, two hours to get the system rolling). You’ll watch your checking account balance swell, confidently make that new hire, and give yourself a steadily growing paycheck. - End the “feast or famine” cycle in your seasonal, unpredictable, or volatile business (that’s every one of you). - Answer the single question that haunts every small business owner, whether they’re making $50,000 or $5 million per year. - Squeeze maximum value from every dollar that flows through your business. - Pinpoint exactly where and how your current financial management system is broken. (If you even have one.) - Overcome unexpected shocks to your cash flow (loss of a key client, flood at the shop, that “unexpected” big tax bill. "As my business grew, I knew I needed a system for working with my money but nothing I tried seemed to work. Then I found PACE and everything changed... I no longer worry that I’ll blow my hard-earned money on candles… In a few short months, [I paid] off my credit card AND my business operates a full month ahead of expenses! It’s truly amazing what I’ve been able to do... " - Amy Pearson "It's time to pay the fee at the amazing (and amazingly expensive) ranch where I'll be taking some of my VIP clients again to do a luxury horse whispering retreat. Only this time, instead of putting it on my business credit card and paying it off over the next few months, I have the cash already EARMARKED and READY and just WAITING to be spent. If this doesn't seem like a miracle to you, then you don't know how right-brained, quick-start, and numbers-challenged I've always been. Not only has working with PACE revolutionized the cash flow of my business, it's transformed the way I see myself. No more "I'm just not good with numbers" nonsense; now I know that with the proper tools and support, I can be a confident, savvy businesswoman who knows my numbers COLD. And that, my friends, is priceless." - Anna Kunnecke

The Big Reset: War on Gold and the Financial Endgame

Willem Middelkoop - 2014
Probably even before 2020, the world’s financial system will need to find a different anchor. The dollar has been at the center of the monetary system since the Second World War, but decades of money printing have caused a gradual but relentless dollar devaluation. In a desperate attempt to maintain this dollar system, the United States has waged a secret war on gold since the 1960s. China and Russia have pierced through the American smokescreen around gold and the dollar and are no longer willing to continue lending to the United States. Both countries have been accumulating enormous amounts of gold, positioning themselves for the next phase of the global financial system. There are only two options: a financial reset planned well in advance, or a hastily implemented one on the back of a dollar crisis. The United States, realizing the dollar will lose its prominent role, seems to be planning a monetary reset that will surprise many. It will be designed to keep the United States in the driving seat, but will include strong roles for the Euro and China’s Renminbi. And it is likely gold will be reintroduced as one of the pillars of this next phase of the global financial system. Insiders claim gold could be revalued up to $7,000 per troy ounce during this process.

A History of Central Banking and the Enslavement of Mankind

Stephen Mitford Goodson - 2014
The ability to operate a fraudulent credit and loan system has long been known, and through all the slickness of a snake-oil salesman, the money-lenders - the same types Jesus whipped from the Temple - have persuaded governments that banking is best left to private interests. Many wars, revolutions, depressions, recessions, and other social upheavals, have been directly related to the determination of these money-lenders to retain and extend their power and profits. When any state, individual or idea has threatened their scam they have often responded with wars and revolutions. The cultural and material progress of a civilization will often relate to the degree by which it is free from the influence of debt, and the degradation that results when the money-lenders are permitted to regain power. Hence, Goodson shows that both World Wars, the Napoleonic wars, the American Revolution, the rise and fall of Julius Caesar, the overthrow of Qathafi in Libya and the revolution against Tsar Nicholas, among much else relate to this "Hidden Hand" in history. This is the key to understanding the past, present and future.

Losing Grip

Mercy Amare - 2014

Good Debt, Bad Debt and a Better Way Forward

Steven A. Markowitz - 2014
The former is basic: create a product or service with value and sell it intelligently. Then, reinvest profits for growth. The latter involves leveraging the cost of debt on customers to finance growth. In capitalism, excess corporate debt should be tempered by the implied threat to investors that comes from bad decision-making. However, when investors believe they may be bailed out during downturns, capitalism fails and feeds greed. This book is about a real business that for over seven decades succeeded without resorting to excessive debt, resulting in a positive outcome for investors, employees and a local community. It is a story of how a small organ builder in Macungie, Pennsylvania, USA introduced digital sound technology to the world in 1971, decades prior to CDs and MP3 players. It is also a story of a company that has maintained its manufacturing in the same community since 1953. This same company then successfully diversified into the data communication field, growing that subsidiary's sales 20 times and thriving even as the industry melted down shuttering many competitors. These successes were made possible because of prudent financial management. While debt has damaged companies, communities and even countries, the financial services industry profits by marketing leverage. This book shares real-life pitfalls of dealing with that industry and the inability of the judicial system to hold it accountable. Sworn testimony is used to show incompetence and a cover up.

Making Money: The Philosophy of Crisis Capitalism

Ole Bjerg - 2014
Using the thinking of Slavoj Žižek, while still engaging with mainstream economic literature, the book provides a genuinely philosophical theory of money. This theory is unfolded in reflections on the nature of monetary phenomenon such as financial markets, banks, debt, credit, derivatives, gold, risk, value, price, interests, and arbitrage. The analysis of money is put into an historical context by suggesting that the current financial turbulence and debt crisis are symptoms that we live in the age of post-credit capitalism. By bridging the fields of economics and contemporary philosophy, Bjerg's work engages in a productive form of intellectual arbitrage. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Financial Planning Exposed: Overcoming Myths to Create a Secure Future

Margie Shard - 2014
Life expectancy is longer, medical bills are higher, social security is in a dire state, and consumer debt is out of control. We are in a time where interest rates are still low, but will start to climb. This causes a chain reaction in bond prices declining. People generally throw their “safe money” into bonds and it will no longer be so safe. The stock market just went through one of the worst bear markets to-date and not everyone has recovered. Pensions are getting rarer and those who still have pensions are now getting buy-out options. Some people lost their pensions due to failure of companies and mismanagement. Individuals are scared to invest in their retirement plans through work because they don’t understand them. People need planning, more than ever. Yet, most people who work with a financial advisor aren’t getting planning, but believe that they are. They are given unrealistic expectations by their advisors because the advisors aren’t looking at the entire picture. Mistakes are being made and opportunities are being lost. However, this can be stopped. This book will discuss common myths that are adding to the financial dilemma's individuals experience and give real life stories about these myths. It will also clear up the big difference between financial advisors - which most individuals have - vs. financial planners - which most individuals believe they have. After reading this book, you will understand what kind of financial professional you are working with and what you need to be discussing and expecting when planning your pre and post retirement life.

Startup Wealth: The Entrepreneur's Guide to Personal Financial Success and Long-Term Security

Joyce L. Franklin - 2014
But the very optimism that contributes to their success may torpedo the subsequent preservation of their fortune. Startup Wealth is a crucial guide for entrepreneurs looking to understand the personal financial and legal challenges of creating and building a company. More than 65 entrepreneurs, executives, venture capitalists, and advisors offer advice for making smart financial decisions in all phases of a startup. Entertaining success stories and revealing lessons learned come from the founders of Tesla Motors, the CFO of Yahoo, and other tech luminaries. An exploration of the Entrepreneur's Wheel of Life and easy-to-follow checklists will help you and your employees maximize personal wealth from day one until well after your IPO or acquisition. Rounding out Startup Wealth are comprehensive discussions of equity awards, stock options, and angel investing. Praise for "Startup Wealth" "This book contains a wealth of genuinely usable tips and advice, set against a background of entertainingly presented tales of Silicon Valley failure and success. Joyce has compiled a terrific combination of tactical moves informed by factual lessons learned." -Lise Buyer, Principal and Founder, Class V Group "Starting a new company can be challenging. In order to succeed, you need to be able to think more than one move ahead. Startup Wealth helps you do just that. Its 'learn by example' approach provides insight that you can use from day one until a liquidity event-and beyond." --Steve Datnow, CEO and Founder, OrgChart5.com "This book has some good advice, which often goes unsaid, even by the people who are great at advising entrepreneurs in the early stages." --Karl Jacob, CEO and Founder, Hangtime, Inc.; Angel Investor "Startup Wealth covers a broad range of topics, from personal finance to tax planning, when working at a startup, whether during the lean years or a liquidity event. The book is also interspersed with relevant anecdotes from entrepreneurs that make it an enjoyable read. Even if you don't end up at the next Facebook, the advice on managing wealth through the startup process is well worth reading." ---Eric Deal, Engineer and President, Cyclic Design "While many books have been written about entrepreneurism, few ever address the important intersection between the financial success of the company and the personal financial success of the entrepreneur. In this book, Joyce Franklin provides an excellent guide on how to balance between the two, replete with valuable stories of entrepreneurs who have already been down this path and are willing to share their successes and failures. Whether you're an entrepreneur trying to navigate your own balance between business and personal financial success, or an advisor working with entrepreneurs, you should find the stories and knowledge that Franklin shares to be of enormous value!" --Michael E. Kitces, CFP(r), CLU, ChFC Publisher, The Kitces Report & Nerd's Eye View; Partner, Director of Research, Pinnacle Advisory Group "Good ideas-defining the steps to startup success, for example-are not hard to find; business how-to books are full of them. What's scarce is persuasive evidence that these ideas really work, particularly when they seem to challenge conventional wisdom. Joyce Franklin's Startup Wealth documents her entrepreneurial prescriptions with tips and profiles....The lessons she offers aren't "textbook"; rather, they derive from the experiences of men and women whose career paths illustrate the "Entrepreneur's Wheel of Life" that Franklin describes. There's no shortcut to success, but Startup Wealth offers real-world guidance that's proved its value." --Stevenson Hawkey, PhD, Director of the Financial Planning Program, Department of Finance and Economics, Golden Gate U.

Financial Therapy: Theory, Research, and Practice

Bradley T. Klontz - 2014
Formerly it may have waxed and waned in tune with the economy, but today more individuals are experiencing financial mental anguish and self-destructive behavior regardless of bull or bear markets, recessions or boom periods. From a fringe area of psychology, financial therapy has emerged to meet increasingly salient concerns.Financial Therapy is the first full-length guide to the field, bridging theory, practical methods, and a growing cross-disciplinary evidence base to create a framework for improving this crucial aspect of clients' lives. Its contributors identify money-based disorders such as compulsive buying, financial hoarding, and workaholism, and analyze typical early experiences and the resulting mental constructs ("money scripts") that drive toxic relationships with money. Clearly relating financial stability to larger therapeutic goals, therapists from varied perspectives offer practical tools for assessment and intervention, advise on cultural and ethical considerations, and provide instructive case studies. A diverse palette of research-based and practice-based models meets monetary mental health issues with well-known treatment approaches, among them: Cognitive-behavioral and solution-focused therapies. Collaborative relationship models. Experiential approaches. Psychodynamic financial therapy. Feminist and humanistic approaches. Stages of change and motivational interviewing in financial therapy. A text that serves to introduce and define the field as well as plan for its future, Financial Therapy is an important investment for professionals in psychotherapy and counseling, family therapy, financial planning, and social policy.

Natural Prophets: From Health Foods to Whole Foods - How the Pioneers of the Industry Changed the Way We Eat and Reshaped American Business

Joe Dobrow - 2014
With nearly unfettered double-digit annual growth, the development of this nearly $100 billion industry is one of the most remarkable untold stories in American business history. Trailblazers like Mo Siegel of Celestial Seasonings, Gary Hirshberg of Stonyfield Farms, and John Mackey of Whole Foods openly challenged the interests of Big American Agribusiness, transformed food manufacturing and retailing, and re-wrote the playbook for small entrepreneurs.Dobrow, a 20-year veteran of the natural foods industry who had a front row seat (and backstage pass) to much of the upheaval and expansion he describes, characterizes the radical vision of these "natural prophets" as one part anti-industrial activism, one part bold opportunism, and one part new-era marketing genius. The triple bottom line—people, planet, profit—emerged as a major new lodestone for successful, values-based business practices.NATURAL PROPHETS is a fascinating narrative account of these upstart Davids—their failures and their unprecedented successes—that distills lessons about management, marketing, and entrepreneurial growth, and offers a lively, urgent profile of an industry that continues to change the way we eat, the way we live, and the way we think about ourselves.

The Only Financial Planning Book That you will ever Need

Amar Pandit - 2014
Some are immediately put off, as they simply do not have time to plan. They think of the process as complex and time-consuming; in fact, most believe they should think of a financial plan once they have enough wealth. There are many such myths about financial planning and its important to understand what financial planning really is. Any decision about money impacts your overall finances. In fact, deciding not to invest or not to plan is also a decision. Any decision that you take about money and that has an impact on your overall financial situation is financial planning. The irony is that most people do financial planning unknowingly and in an unstructured manner, whether it is buying insurance policies, or stocks, or investing in real estate or taking a loan. These decisions are generally taken in isolation, with no relation to each other, and without considering the impact of one decision on the other. So, why not do it in a structured manner? Financial Planning is the process of utilizing your Financial Resources in the best possible manner to achieve your Financial Goals. Financial Planning is not the same as Investment Planning or taking advice from a chartered accountant or a banker. Financial planning encompasses several areas of personal finance such as: Cash flow and Debt Management Risk Management and Insurance Planning Asset Allocation & Investment Planning Taxation Planning Retirement Planning Estate Planning (Transfer of Wealth, Wills, Power of Attorneys and Trusts) Leonardo Da Vinci said “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication" and this book is an attempt to make financial planning and personal finance simple for everyone.

The Empty Seashell: Witchcraft and Doubt on an Indonesian Island

Nils Bubandt - 2014
In a book based on more than three years of fieldwork between 1991 and 2011, Nils Bubandt argues that cannibal witches for people in the coastal, and predominantly Christian, community of Buli in the Indonesian province of North Maluku are both corporeally real and fundamentally unknowable.Witches (known as gua in the Buli language or as suanggi in regional Malay) appear to be ordinary humans but sometimes, especially at night, they take other forms and attack people in order to kill them and eat their livers. They are seemingly everywhere and nowhere at the same time. The reality of gua, therefore, can never be pinned down. The title of the book comes from the empty nautilus shells that regularly drift ashore around Buli village. Convention has it that if you find a live nautilus, you are a gua. Like the empty shells, witchcraft always seems to recede from experience.Bubandt begins the book by recounting his own confusion and frustration in coming to terms with the contradictory and inaccessible nature of witchcraft realities in Buli. A detailed ethnography of the encompassing inaccessibility of Buli witchcraft leads him to the conclusion that much of the anthropological literature, which views witchcraft as a system of beliefs with genuine explanatory power, is off the mark. Witchcraft for the Buli people doesn't explain anything. In fact, it does the opposite: it confuses, obfuscates, and frustrates. Drawing upon Jacques Derrida's concept of aporia--an interminable experience that remains continuously in doubt--Bubandt suggests the need to take seriously people's experiential and epistemological doubts about witchcraft, and outlines, by extension, a novel way of thinking about witchcraft and its relation to modernity.
