With the Old Breed/Helmet for My Pillow (2 Volume Set)

Eugene B. Sledge
    B. Sledge's acclaimed first-person account of fighting at Peleliu and Okinawa returns to thrill, edify, and inspire a new generation. An Alabama boy steeped in American history and enamored of such heroes as George Washington and Daniel Boone, Eugene B. Sledge became part of the war's famous 1st Marine Division-3d Battalion, 5th Marines. Even after intense training, he was shocked to be thrown into the battle of Peleliu, where "the world was a nightmare of flashes, explosions, and snapping bullets." By the time Sledge hit the hell of Okinawa, he was a combat vet, still filled with fear but no longer with panic.Based on notes Sledge secretly kept in a copy of the New Testament, With the Old Breed captures with utter simplicity and searing honesty the experience of a soldier in the fierce Pacific Theater. Here is what saved, threatened, and changed his life. Here, too, is the story of how he learned to hate and kill-and came to love-his fellow man. HELMET FOR MY PILLOW: Here is one of the most riveting first-person accounts ever to come out of World War II. Robert Leckie enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in January 1942, shortly after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. In Helmet for My Pillow we follow his odyssey, from basic training on Parris Island, South Carolina, all the way to the raging battles in the Pacific, where some of the war's fiercest fighting took place. Recounting his service with the 1st Marine Division and the brutal action on Guadalcanal, New Britain, and Peleliu, Leckie spares no detail of the horrors and sacrifices of war, painting an unvarnished portrait of how real warriors are made, fight, and often die in the defense of their country. From the live-for-today rowdiness of marines on leave to the terrors of jungle warfare against an enemy determined to fight to the last man, Leckie describes what war is really like when victory can only be measured inch by bloody inch.

Former international model and photographer Lana Calloway is finally headed home, after attending the DC romance convention to find the perfect model, the “one” whose face and body could make her new business venture a success. Battle of the Bulge: Then and Now

Jean-Paul Pallud
This is the first time that an attempt has been made to cover the entire salient in order to present the battle in our familiar 'then and now' format. Hundreds of miles have been traveled by the author throughout every corner of the battlefield to search out the scenes of past events -- every known photograph belonging to combatants, civilians, and in public collections and private sources has been sought or considered. all the cine film has been examined frame by frame and certain sequences illustrated and analyzed. In this way a number of classic pictures almost always used -- or misused -- in depicting the Ardennes battle are not only placed in their context in the German advance but are also shown to be not always quite what they seem!

Last Words: Letters And Statements Of The Leaders Executed After The Rising At Easter 1916

Piaras F. Mac Lochlainn
It includes also some of the statements made and dispatches issued by the leaders during the Week, at the surrender, and after it, as well as some references to their activities while fighting was in progress. It has been thought well, too, to include accounts, where it has been possible to come upon such, of the last moments of the leaders from the lips of the relatives or friends who visited them or the priests who attended them. Some of the letters herein are being published for the first time. Time was when it was felt that the letters of the leaders to their near relatives were too intimate for them to be read by the public in general, but it will be accepted now more than half a century later, that, having given their lives for Ireland, the leaders of the Rising - as, indeed, all who took part in it - have become part of our history so that everything they did, or said, or wrote, has a rightful palce in the annals as well as in the hearts of the Irish people. Those included are: Padraic Mac Piarais (P. H. Pearse), Tomas O Cleirigh (Thomas J. Clarke), Tomas Mac Donnchadha (Thomas MacDonagh), Eamonn O Dalaigh (Edward Daly), Liam Mac Piarais (William Pearse), Micheal O hAnnrachain (Michael O'Hanrahan), Ioseph O Pluingcead (Joseph Mary Plunkett), Sean Mac Giolla Bhride (John MacBride), Sean Mac Aodha (Sean Heuston), Micheal O Meallain (Michael Mallin), Eamonn Ceannt, Conchuir O Colbaird (Con Colbert), Tomas Ceannt (Thomas Kent), Sea Mac Diarmada, Seamus O Conghaile (James Connolly), Ruairi Mac Easmainn (Roger Casement). Also included are illustrations and a list of illustrations, and two appendices of remembrances.

Doolittle's Tokyo Raiders

Carroll V. Glines
They were all volunteers and this was a very dangerous mission. Sixteen B-25 bombers took off from the deck of the USS Hornet, led by (then Col.) Jimmy Doolittle. They were to fly over Japan, drop their bombs and fly on to land in a part of China that was still free. Of course, things do not always go as planned. The months following the attack on Pearl Harbor were the darkest of the war, as Imperial Japanese forces rapidly extended their reach across the Pacific. Our military was caught off guard, forced to retreat, and losing many men in the fall of the Philippines, leading to the infamous Bataan Death March. By spring, 1942, America needed a severe morale boost. The raid on Tokyo on April 18, 1942, certainly provided that – cheering the American military and public. Yet, the Doolittle Raid meant so much more, proving to the Japanese high command that their home islands were not invulnerable to American attacks and causing them to shift vital resources to their defense. Two months later that decision would play a role in the outcome of the Battle of Midway, the American victory that would begin to turn the tide in the Pacific War.

Extinguish

Tessa Teevan
I just didn't know how short that'd be. You know when you're standing at the altar, anxiously saying your vows, but not really hearing them? You're too focused on the beautiful angel in white agreeing to love you for life. You repeat the phrase till death do us part without hesitation. In hindsight, those are some pretty morbid words for such a joyous occasion. You never actually think those words will one day come true. At least not any time soon. But for me? That's exactly what happened. --Extinguish will be an Explosive prequel novella from the POV of someone essential to the series, yet whose voice we've never heard. Until now.

Bad Blood

Shey Stahl
I gave her my name and a promise to keep her safe. Only that promise is hard to keep when all I’ve ever known is violence. As a Navy SEAL sniper, all I have ever done is protect, serve and honor my country. Some would say I’m the most dangerous man they’ve ever met. Haunted by my dark past, I would agree with that assessment but they have no idea the cold-blooded man they’ve now created. They drew a line in blood when they went after my wife. So this is my revenge. They will pay for what they’ve done, even if it means bringing down everyone in my vengeance.Weighted by a vice that won’t let up, I’ve thrown myself into finding them and I’m certain nothing will keep me from doing so. They say there’s nothing more dangerous than a man who has nothing left to lose and I would have to agree with that. When my time comes, I will answer for my sins, but so will they.

Ruckmarsch The German Retreat From Normandy Then And Now

Jean-Paul Pallud
However, when his last-ditch attempt to recover the initiative with Operation Lüttich - the counter-attack from Mortain on August 7 - failed, it was an implied admission that his armies in the West had been defeated. From that starting point, Jean Paul Pallud takes up the story, following in the footsteps of the Germans as they retreat across France. The next days and weeks were ones of confusion for the German command with staffs and technical services dispersed; command and communication virtually non-existent; roads congested and strafed, and directives to build new stop-lines almost immediately rendered obsolete by the flow of events . . . all within a matter of a few days.Although the Germans lost nearly 300,000 men during the retreat - either killed, wounded, missing, or taken prisoner - nevertheless it was not necessarily an Allied victory as by the beginning of September German forces had turned round and were once more standing firm, this time along the 650 kilometres between Switzerland and the North Sea. This, then, is that story told through hundreds of 'then and now' comparison photographs by the author, and which includes some quite amazing discoveries that he made along the way.

Parabat

Mathew Paul
In order to obtain a balanced and fair account, the author interviewed paratroopers of all races. Parabat is also a study of how the exploits of the South African airborne family are seen by the men on the ground. The experiences have been set down exactly as related to the author, with no changes or apologies -- the swearing, the torture, the emotions, the turmoil, the killings and the humor. These are the accounts of the paratrooper family from the war in Angola in the 80s to the various township wars in the 90s, as well as South Africa's intervention in Lesotho in 1998.

Richard A. Gabriel
Ranging from Sumer, the world's first imperial state, to the fall of the Byzantine Empire, this comprehensive three-volume set, which includes both Western and non-Western empires, details the military capabilities of these empires, including the armies, soldiers, technologies, and commanders that powered the imperial juggernaut. From the Near East to Asia, from Western Europe to the New World, these empires spawned every major social institution on which modern society is based, including the first use of total war. With more than 400 illustrations and maps, this set reveals the awesome and destructive power of these early forces, from the dawn of recorded history to the development of gunpowder. Students will find the historical context within which the empire emerged, an examination of the imperial army, including structure, weapons, tactics, logistics, and manner of warfare; a detailed analysis of at least one major battle; an analysis of the rival commanders; and a section on the lessons of war. A Soldier's Journal

James Bollich
Captured when America surrendered the Philippines' Bataan Peninsula, James Bollich experienced first-hand the march that cost more than 8,000 American and Filipino lives. Now, he shares the unforgettable experience of his three and a half years of Japanese imprisonment. This journal relates his personal experience, first focusing on the sixty-five-mile march that deprived prisoners of food, water, and rest. Prisoners received harsh punishments for any infraction, one of the most brutal of these being the policy of beheading them for taking a sip of water. Rather than force him to give up, these things made Bollich fight for life even more. Witnessing his comrades falling beside him and watching his own body waste away to ninety pounds, he never yielded his will to survive. After completing the march, he remained a prisoner of war, first at an old Philippine army base, then in another camp at Mukden, Manchuria. He relates his imprisonment in detail, from starvation and torture to digging their own comrades graves in the hot sun, without hats or water. Through it all, he remained courageous and hopeful that he would one day make it back home. His story reminds both past and present generations of the horror and brutality of the Pacific war, all the while providing an inspiring testament to the will of the human spirit.

The Killing Season: The Autumn of 1914, Ypres, and the Afternoon That Cost Germany a War

Robert Cowley
It gave birth to "no-man's-land," that spectral space of shattered trees and pockmarked earth, a battleground where thousands of men fought to gain thirty feet of territory, only to lose it again the next day. Ypres was where the commanding officers of both sides--many of whom knew about war only through studying it in a classroom--realized that the combination of grand cavalry maneuvers and gallant charges with twentieth-century weapons was a losing, fatal one. From Sir John French, the compulsive womanizer who led Britain's forces, to Albert of Belgium, who may have been history's last warrior king, down to the young staff officers and military journalists, Robert Cowley brings Ypres to life, using the accounts of commanders and soldiers alike.Weaving together a wide array of source material based on thirty years of research, Cowley explores the extent to which the Germans' rigid training cost them thousands of men, debunks the myth of the "singing attacks," and reveals a crucial, overlooked "What if?" of history: the afternoon of October 31, 1914, when the Germans hesitated to attack the depleted British forces and lost their best chance of winning the Western Front.

The First, The Few, The Forgotten: Navy And Marine Corps Women In World War I

Jean Ebbert
Effectively shattering the misconception that women's military role in the war was limited to nursing, the authors recount that from 1917 to 1920, some 12,000 enlisted women served in the U.S. Naval Reserve and 305 in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. Carefully researched and engagingly written, the book explores a surprising variety of military duties carried out by women, including a number of non-clerical, highly specialized billets. In their efforts to acknowledge the historical significance of the women's service and preserve a record of it, Jean Ebbert and Marie-Beth Hall address the Navy's official and unofficial responses to the women's presence and thoughtfully document the dilemmas of the time. While other books have been written about women in the military, this work is unique in its coverage of service women in World War I. Detailing their backgrounds, training, responsibilities, and personal and social challenges, it takes a hard look at the women who opened the door to women's future integration in the military. This is a significant work and a principal subject area for persons interested in the history of the military and in women's studies.
