Hands That Heal

Echo Bodine - 1986
This book, first published in 1985 by ACS, was Echo’s first book and is still her favorite. In her inimital manner, Echo explains to readers what energy or spiritual healing is and how a session works, including how it feels to the healer and the person being healed. Echo’s approach to healing could be seen as the traditional Christian "laying on of hands," though the healer sometimes uses their hands on the aura around a person and does not always touch them directly. Hands That Heal addresses concerns and questions that readers may have about healing. In fact, Echo describes such mundane aspects of the process as the room she uses, how people contact her, and how she uses music, incense, and color in her healing space. Details about releasing emotional blocks, avoiding dependency, the dangers of judging anyone’s illness, and absentee healing are also provided. Case studies of clients, and line drawings depicting the set-up and positioning of hands, further illustrate how healing works in people’s lives. She also provides exercises for the person wishing to test and develop their own healing hands.

The Equinox: Volume III, Number 10

Aleister Crowley - 1986
This book contains key introductory material to this contemporary occult society, along with a history of the Order after Crowley's death. The format of this edition matches that of the first Equinox series published with Crowley as editor and includes magical instruction, communications to OTO members (all the dirt on court cases the OTO has been involved in), and original works of fiction and poetry. As part of this latter category, this book features an illustrated study of the works of underground filmmaker Kenneth Anger with a complete filmography. It could be argued that Aleister Crowley (1875-1947) anticipated the entire New Age phenomenon with his methods of teaching, codified in the tenets of the OTO. A rich melange of ritual magic, traditional spiritual practice, drug use, and sex, borrowing from many different cultures and traditions, informed the development of this lasting magical system. Although he's been popularized (and demonized) as The Beast, 666, his teachings have shown lasting value.

Perception: An Essay On Classical Indian Theories Of Knowledge

Bimal Krishna Matilal - 1986
The author presents the Nyaya view and critically examines it against that of its traditional opponent, the Buddhist version of phenomenalism and idealism. His reconstruction of Nyaya arguments meets not only traditional Buddhist objections but also those of modern sense-data representationalists. The dispute between the Buddhist and Nayaya schools of thought lasted over 12 centuries, and although Professor Matilal's approach is mainly historical, it is made in the belief that the philosophical issues raised by this dispute are universal, rather than simply traditional, and have a significant contribution to make to modern philosophical concerns.

Homer the Theologian: Neoplatonist Allegorical Reading and the Growth of the Epic Tradition

Robert Lamberton - 1986
Professor Lamberton argues that this tradition of reading was to create new demands on subsequent epic and thereby alter permanently the nature of European epic. The Neoplatonist reading was to be decisive in the birth of allegorical epic in late antiquity and forms the background for the next major extension of the epic tradition found in Dante.

A Primer on Determinism

John Earman - 1986
Some prior knowledge of college-level mathematics and physics is presupposed, but otherwise the book is suitable for use in an advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate course in the philosophy of science. While writing I had in mind primarily a philosophical audience, but I hope that students and colleagues from the sciences will also find the treatment of scientific issues of interest. Though modest in not trying to reach beyond an introductory level of analysis, the work is decidedly immodest in trying to change a number of misimpressions that pervade the philosophical literature. For example, when told that classical physics is not the place to look for clean and unproblematic examples of determinism, most philosophers react with a mixture of disbelief and incomprehension. The misconceptions on which that reaction is based can and must be changed.
