Insightful and accessible to all, The Lost Art of Healing describes how true healers use sympathetic listening and touch to hone their diagnostic skills, how language affects the perception of illness, how doctors and patients can cultivate a relationship of trust, and how patients can obtain the most complete and beneficial care through a combination of healing techniques and conventional practices. As Dr. Lown explains, the art of healing does not mean abandoning the spectacular advances of modern science, but rather incorporating them into a sensitive, humane, enlightened approach to medical care. With its urgent message and poignant, fascinating vignettes, The Lost Art of Healing is a book of vital, universal importance.
Don't Leave Me This Way: Or When I Get Back on My Feet You'll Be Sorry
Julia Fox Garrison - 1996
. .You get up, fix breakfast for your three-year-old son, drive yourself to work -- a day like any other. You're running late for a meeting, and as you hurry down the hall, the light is getting brighter and brighter, and suddenly your vision explodes and . . . you're gone. When you wake up, you're in a hospital bed. You can't talk, move your left side, or get out of bed. You can't comb your own hair, much less walk to the bathroom. You've had a massive brain hemorrhage. Your doctors tell you you're lucky to be alive. Even though they don't know the cause of your hemorrhage, they tell you whatever it is, it's incurable and you'll most likely die. But then they tell you the good news: If you do live and manage to get into a wheelchair, at least you can always find parking.Julia Fox Garrison refused to listen to the professionals she called Dr. Jerk, Dr. Panic, and Nurse Doom. She clung to the advice of the kind and gifted Dr. Neuro, who told her "I have to treat your mind as well as your body." After many months in the hospital and then rehab, after coping with the shock of learning what had caused her stroke, and with the help of family and friends and her own indomitable spirit, Julia not only got into a wheelchair, she got back out and learned to walk again.Funny, touching, and profoundly moving, Don't Leave Me This Way is the true story of a woman's fight for her life -- and for her dignity -- as she struggles to overcome the debilitating effects of her stroke. She battles an entrenched medical community with wit and grit, challenging her doctors to always remember that she's a human being and to think beyond the pages of their textbooks and show her the encouragement and optimism that she knows is going to make the difference between life and death.

M. Steven Piver - 1996
When the New York Times published "Research Links Diet and Infertility Factors to Ovarian Cancer," by medical writer Larry Altman, on July 25, 1989, Gilda's husband, Gene Wilder, wrote the author to ask some pointed questions. Altman urged him to contact Dr. M. Steven Piver at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, New York.Wilder and Piver met via telephone and immediately recognized their shared common desire. From that time, they have worked together to communicate to the general public what is known about ovarian cancer. When Dr. Piver decided to write Gilda's Disease, he asked Wilder to help him by sharing what he had learned during Gilda's struggle so that others might benefit from their ordeal. Wilder and Piver have worked diligently to ensure that the material provided here is accessible and informative without being too scary. The result is a book that offers both medical and personal insights into ovarian cancer. All royalties will benefit two organizations honoring Gilda's memory: "Gilda's Club," a free, nonresidential support community located in New York City for people with cancer, their families, and friends; and "The Gilda Radner Familial Ovarian Cancer Registry" in Buffalo, New York, which tracks women with a family history of ovarian cancer and advises them of their risk for developing the disease and methods of prevention.

One Blood: The Death and Resurrection of Charles R. Drew
Spencie Love - 1996
Charles Drew and the well-known legend about his death. On April 1, 1950, Drew died after an auto accident in rural North Carolina. Within hours, rumors spread: the man who helped create the first American Red Cross blood bank had bled to death because a whites-only hospital refused to treat him. Drew was in fact treated in the emergency room of the small, segregated Alamance General Hospital. Two white surgeons worked hard to save him, but he died after about an hour. In her compelling chronicle of Drew's life and death, Spencie Love shows that in a generic sense, the Drew legend is true: throughout the segregated era, African Americans were turned away at hospital doors, either because the hospitals were whites-only or because the 'black beds' were full. Love describes the fate of a young black World War II veteran who died after being turned away from Duke Hospital following an auto accident that occurred in the same year and the same county as Drew's. African Americans are shown to have figuratively 'bled to death' at white hands from the time they were first brought to this country as slaves. By preserving their own stories, Love says, they have proven the enduring value of oral history. General Interest/Race Relations

The World of the Autistic Child: Understanding and Treating Autistic Spectrum Disorders
Bryna Siegel - 1996
When rounds of testing and consultations confirm parents' worst fears, their emotional turmoil is matched by an overriding practical concern: What do we do next? The World of the Autistic Child is by far the most complete and comprehensive book ever written for the parents of autistic children, and for the teachers, child specialists, and other professionals that care for them. Written by Dr. Bryna Siegel, a developmental psychologist and director of a large university clinic for autistic children, it provides help and hope not only for the children, but for their families--the parents, grandparents, siblings, and other caregivers who must come to grips with their own grief and confusion following a diagnosis of autism or other related disorder. Dr. Siegel believes that parents' best defense is to acquire, as early as possible, the knowledge and the parenting skills they will need to work with professionals to help their child fulfill his or her potential. This book, therefore, is about understanding the diagnosis of autism, the available treatments, and how to decide what is best for a particular child with autism or PDD.Straightforward and sympathetic, Dr. Siegel guides readers through the thicket of symptoms and labels, explaining the crucial importance of intensive early education, and how to find the resources and help that are available. Behavior modification, the development of daily living skills, guidelines for selecting and designing schooling, mainstreaming, the role for traditional academics in educating higher functioning children and young people, building effective parent-teacher relationships, psychoactive medications, and dealing with the possibility of residential placement are all covered. Dr. Siegel teaches parents and professionals to use their own common sense and personal observations in evaluating the many highly publicized but unorthodox and often untested treatments for autism, including the much-touted facilitated communication (F/C), holding therapy, auditory training, Options therapy, allergy treatments, and special diets. Pulling together a wealth of long-needed information on the latest educational and medical advances, The World of the Autistic Child is a superb guide and resource that no one who cares about autistic or developmentally disabled young people will want to be without.
