Pocket Book of Poetry

Various - 2014
Many are popular favorites and several represent the best works written by their authors, among them William Shakespeare's sonnets, Samuel Taylor Coleridge's "Kubla Khan," John Keats' "Ode on a Grecian Urn," William Butler Yeats' "The Second Coming," and Robert Frost's "The Road Not Taken." Although some of these poems share themes and verse forms, each is a unique work unto itself. All suggest a world much greater than can be encompassed in their words, and the way in which they transport the reader to that realm is a large part of the pleasure that they offer. Pocket Book of Poetry is one of Barnes & Noble's Collectible Editions classics. Each volume features authoritative texts by the world's greatest authors in an exquisitely designed bonded-leather binding, with distinctive gilt edging.

14 Stories That Inspired Satyajit Ray

Bhaskar Chattopadhyay - 2014

This book brings together all of those stories in one volume. These tales, by the likes of Rabindranath Tagore, Tarashankar Bandopadhyay, Prabhat Kumar Mukhopadhyay, Rajshekhar Basu and Premchand, are milestones in Indian literature quite apart from their cinematic glory. The anthology also contains two stories by Ray himself -Atithi and Pikoor Diary, that illustrate his own craft as a writer. From the dramatic to the starkly real, the humorous to the dark, the lyrical to the prosaic, Fourteen Stories... sparkles with narrative brilliance. Read together, these stories also provide us with the context for a new insight into the mind of one of India's most loved and revered filmmakers.

The Very Best of R. K. Narayan Timless Malgudi

R.K. Narayan - 2014
Narayan, easily one of the most influential and important writers of India, populated the fictional town of Malgudi with a host of unforgettable characters: Swami and his gang of friends, the Talkative Man, Raju the guide and Sampath the printer, among many others. These characters have carved out a place for themselves in popular imagination and live on, still fresh and endlessly entertaining, many decades after they first appeared.Timeless Malgudi brings together a selection of the best and the most enduring of R.K. Narayan’s fiction and non-fiction. The Guide examines, with wit and irony, how a man becomes a godman. The story ‘A Horse and Two Goats’ describes an attempt at cross-cultural communication which goes haywire, with hilarious consequences. The excerpt from My Days, Narayan’s autobiography, paints a poignant picture of the author’s childhood while the ‘Misguided “Guide”’ is a cynical, sharply written chronicle of the making of the film Guide, based on his novel. Also included in this volume are excerpts from the travelogue My Dateless Diary and a brilliant retelling of the Tamil epic Silappadikaram.Catering both to Narayan aficionados and to readers who have not yet been introduced to his work, Timeless Malgudi is as much a showcase of Narayan’s writing as it is a celebration of Malgudi, the town which time does not touch.

People are going to be talking about this one for years." - Jacob Gallagher-Ross, Village Voice"More than a modern-dress treatment of a classic work, it's a fresh rethinking of the material from the perspective of a modern mind." - Marilyn Stasio, VarietyAnnie Baker, one of the most celebrated playwrights in the United States, lends her truthful observation and elegant command of the colloquial to Anton Chekhov's despairing masterpiece Uncle Vanya. A critical hit in its sold-out Off-Broadway premiere, Baker's telling is a refreshingly intimate and modern treatment of a Chekhovian classic.Annie Baker's plays include The Flick (The Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, Obie Award), The Aliens (Obie Award), Circle Mirror Transformation (Obie Award) and Body Awareness. Her work has been produced at more than a hundred theaters in the U.S. and in more than a dozen countries internationally. Recent honors include a Guggenheim Fellowship, Steinberg Playwright Award and New York Drama Critics Circle Award. She is a resident playwright at the Signature Theatre.

F. Scott Fitzgerald Four Pack - Benjamin Button, This Side of Paradise, The Beautiful and Damned, The Diamond as big as The Ritz (Illustrated by Norman Rockwell)

F. Scott Fitzgerald - 2014
Scott Fitzgerald bundle: This Side of Paradise, The Beautiful and Damned, The Diamond as big as The Ritz and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. This Side of Paradise First published in 1920, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s debut novel was a sizzling sensation that put the young American author on the map. Its initial printing of 3,000 copies sold out in three days. Virtually a record of the ‘Lost Generation’ in its college days, the novel explores Fitzgerald’s characteristic theme of true love blighted by money lust and is remarkable for its honest and detailed descriptions of the early Jazz Age. The Beautiful and Damned First published in 1922, F. Scott Fitzgerald's second novel portrays the Eastern elite during the Jazz Age, exploring New York Café Society. The story is believed to be largely based on Fitzgerald's stormy relationship with Zelda Fitzgerald. This is the tale of young couple Anthony and Gloria Patch living out their days to the hilt in New York City as they await the death of Anthony's grandfather, Adam Patch from whom they expect to inherit his massive fortune. They drink and eat in the classiest restaurants and hotels, rent the most expensive apartments, travel out to the West in the spring time driving plush cars, wearing top-of-the-line clothing and just generally living it up high on the hog, as they wait. But as time goes on their lust for life and their similarities threaten to destroy their innocence and their relationship. The Diamond as big as The Ritz First published in the June 1922 issue of The Smart Set magazine, The Diamond as big as The Ritz is one of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s under-rated masterpieces. The story was initially rejected by publishers because of its not-so-subtle satirical messages about American capitalism. Here it is, Fitzgerald’s rarely talked about ‘gem’ of a short story, fully remastered for the Kindle and beautifully illustrated with vintage advertisement art from the early 1920s. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button The classic short story presented with period art specially formatted for the Kindle. Benjamin Button was first published in Colliers Magazine on May 27, 1922. It was subsequently anthologized in Fitzgerald's book Tales of the Jazz Age.' This is the original version of the story used for the 2008 film starring Brad Pitt. Four Fitzgerald Classics In One Amazing Collection *Includes links to free full-length audio recordings for ‘This Side of Paradise’ and ‘The Diamond As Big As The Ritz.’ *Beautifully illustrated with paintings by Norman Rockwell and original advertisement art from the 1920s . *Active Table of Contents for each book accessible from the Kindle "go to" feature. *Perfect formatting in rich text compatible with Kindle's Text-to-Speech features.

The Havamal - Sayings of the High One

Henry Adams Bellows - 2014
This collection was known as "The High One's Words," and forms the basis of the present poem. Few gnomic collections in the world's literary history present sounder wisdom more tersely expressed than the Havamal. Like the Book of Proverbs it occasionally rises to lofty heights of poetry. If it presents the worldly wisdom of a violent race, it also shows noble ideals of loyalty, truth, and unfaltering courage. Over time other poems were added to the original content dealing with wisdom which seemed, by their nature, to imply that the speaker was Odin. Thus a catalogue of runes, or charms, was tacked on, and also a set of proverbs. Here and there bits of verse crept in; and of course the loose structure of the poem made it easy for any reciter to insert new stanzas almost at will. This curious miscellany is what we now have as the Havamal. Five separate elements are pretty clearly recognizable: (1) the Havamal proper (stanzas 1-80), a collection of proverbs and counsels for the conduct of life; (2) the Loddfafnismol (stanzas 111-138), a collection somewhat similar to the first, but specifically addressed to a certain Loddfafnir; (3) the Ljothatal (stanzas 147-165), a collection of charms; (4) the lovestory of Odin and Billing's daughter (stanzas 96-102); (5) the story of how Odin got the mead of poetry from the maiden Gunnloth (stanzas 103-110). There is also a brief passage (stanzas 139-146) telling how Odin won the runes, this passage being a natural introduction to the Ljothatal, and doubtless brought into the poem for that reason.

Finnegans Wake & Exiles (Timeless Wisdom Collection)

James Joyce - 2014
The books are: - Finnegans Wake, a novel - Exiles, a theatrical play. Finnegans Wake, is significant for its experimental style and its reputation as one of the most difficult works of fiction in the English language. Written in Paris over a period of seventeen years, and published in 1939, two years before Joyce's death, it was his final work. The book is written in an idiosyncratic language, a mixture of standard English lexical items and neologistic multilingual puns and portmanteau words. Some critics believe attempts to recreate the experience of sleep and dreams. The work contains expansive linguistic experiments, stream of consciousness writing style, literary allusions, free dream associations, and abandons all conventions of plot and character construction. Please be aware that this edition has no missing pages, or typos attributable to our edition. We are faithfully publishing what the author wrote, and how he wrote it!

Spurgeon commentary on the Epistle to the Hebrews. The Prince of Preachers, Charles H. Spurgeon (19th June 1834 – 31 January 1892) was not only a wonderful orator but also magnificent with his pen. The sermons he preached touched the lives of thousands. His writings still continue to reach those who read them to this very day. Reading Spurgeon today may be secondary to the impossibility of hearing him but there is no doubt that his words still carry the weight of Biblical truth. There he enjoyed many years of fruitful ministry, leading people to Christ and pastoring the ever growing congregation of the Church.

Tao Te Ching: Annotated & Explained

Derek Lin - 2014
Short enough to read in an afternoon, subtle enough to study for a lifetime, the Tao Te Ching distills into razor - sharp poetry centuries of spiritual inquiry into the Tao - the ''''Way'''' of the natural world around us that reveals the ultimate organizing principle of the universe.Derek Lin's insightful commentary, along with his new translation from the original Chinese - a translation that sets a whole new standard for accuracy - will inspire your spiritual journey and enrich your everyday life. It highlights the Tao Te Ching's insights on simplicity, balance, and learning from the paradoxical truths you can see all around you: finding strength through flexibility (because bamboo bends, it is tough to break); achieving goals by transcending obstacles (water simply flows around rocks on its way to the sea); believing that small changes bring powerful results (a sapling, in time, grows into a towering tree). Now you can experience the wisdom and power of Lao Tzu's words even if you have no previous knowledge of the Tao Te Ching. SkyLight Illuminations provides insightful yet unobtrusive commentary that describes helpful historical background, explains the Tao Te Ching's poetic imagery, and elucidates the ancient Taoist wisdom that will speak to your life today and energize your spiritual quest.

Work / Eight Cousins /Rose in Bloom / Stories & Other Writings

Louisa May Alcott - 2014
This second volume of The Library of America’s Alcott edition gathers these works for the first time, revealing a fascinating and inspiring dimension of a classic American writer. The first of a trio of novels written over a fruitful three-year period, Work: A Story of Experience (1873) has been called the adult Little Women. It follows the semi-autobiographical story of an orphan named Christie Devon, who, having turned twenty-one, announces “a new Declaration of Independence” and leaves her uncle’s house in order to pursue economic self-sufficiency and to find fulfillment in her profession. Against the backdrop of the Civil War years, Christie works as a servant, actress, governess, companion, seamstress, and army nurse—all jobs that Alcott knew from personal experience—exposing the often insidious ways in which the employments conventionally available to women constrain their self-determination. Alcott’s most overtly feminist novel, Work breaks new ground in the literary representation of women, as its heroine pushes at the boundaries of nineteenth-century expectations and assumptions.Eight Cousins (1875) concerns the education of Rose Campbell, another orphan who, in her delicate nature and frail health, seems to embody many of the stereotypes of girlhood that shaped Alcott’s world. But with the benefit of an unorthodox, progressive education (one informed by the theories of Alcott’s transcendentalist father Bronson Alcott) and the good and bad examples of her many crisply drawn relations—especially her seven boy cousins—Rose regains her health and envisions a career both as a wife and mother and as a philanthropist. In Rose in Bloom (1876), the sequel to Eight Cousins, Rose, now twenty, comes out into society and must navigate its perils while choosing between several suitors, including two of her cousins. Further advancing Alcott’s passionate advocacy of women’s rights, Rose insists that she will manage her own fortune rather than find a husband to do it for her. This Library of America edition includes several noteworthy features. All three novels are presented with beautifully restored line art from the original editions and are supplemented by seven hard-to-find stories and public letters (two restored to print for the first time in more than a century), an authoritative chronology of Alcott’s life, and notes identifying her allusions, quotations, and the autobiographical episodes in her fiction.

René Descartes: Four Major Works

René Descartes - 2014
Descartes is often called the Father of Modern Philosophy, and much of early Western philosophy is a response to his writings. Descartes writing are still studied closely to this day. Descartes was also influential in mathematics; the Cartesian coordinate system — allowing reference to a point in space as a set of numbers, and allowing algebraic equations to be expressed as geometric shapes in a two-dimensional coordinate system (and conversely, shapes to be described as equations) — was named after him. Descartes was also one of the key figures in the Scientific Revolution and has been described as an example of genius. This collection contains four of his major works: • Rules For The Direction Of The Mind (1628) • Discourse On The Method (1637) • Meditations On First Philosophy (1641) • Principles Of Philosophy (1644) Audiobooks of the works Discourse On The Method and Meditations On First Philosophy are included free of charge. Its call for freedom has helped create a vibrant movement to promote economic and personal liberty. And it has finally been adapted as a film trilogy. If you love the novel and want to reenter the world Ayn Rand created, to appreciate her literary craft, to relive the drama, to enjoy once again the company of the characters, or to study the ideas, this book is for you.If you have seen the films and are reading the novel for the first time, this book is for you, too. It contains expert analysis of the themes and philosophy, the most complete list of characters, and exclusive material on the films."As a board member of the Atlas Society and the producer of the Atlas Shrugged film trilogy, I am proud to endorse this guide. For nearly fifteen years, David Kelley gave me unflagging support and advice on one attempt after another to create a film adaptation. I was determined to make a film true to the philosophy and story of Ayn Rand’s great novel. With David’s profound knowledge of the work, his ability to communicate script problems to Hollywood writers and film-makers, andthe help of the rest of the TAS team, he was indispensable to that effort. For those who have enjoyed the films and the novel and want to learn more, this book is the single best educator."—John Aglialoro, producer of the Atlas Shrugged film trilogy

Candelaio: A New Stage Translation

Alan W. Powers - 2014
NASA is right now looking for the worlds Bruno predicted. But Bruno is downright funny in his play, as he is "dead serious" in the works for which he died. Here we're more likely to die--laughing. Bony thinks he's bedding his lover, but it's his wife. The scientist Bart spends every moment trying to make gold, until his ignored wife takes a lover. The teacher Manny reads his poems to his boys hoping to attract them as they attract him. How the boys defeat Manny is humorous. Several Naples street hooligans put on security jackets and steal from Manny and others. At least one character above is bisexual. Is this a contemporary play, or Candelaio from nearly 440 years ago? Bruno only wrote one play, the best first play ever written. Printed in Paris in 1582, the play waited four hundred years for the world to catch up to Bruno--not just in astronomy. Many know Giordano Bruno's martyrdom, but nobody thinks him outrageously funny, until they read this play, and this version. Love Stories from Punjab

Harish Dhillon - 2014
An exposition of Sufi philosophy, each story possesses both the calm and the storm of true love – a love that consumes the body and the heart; a love that goes beyond all common sense; a love better known as junoon (intense passion), that finally culminates in ibaadat (worship) and the love of God. From Sohni-Mahiwal to Heer-Ranjha, Sassi-Punnu to Mirza-Sahiban, Harish Dhillon succinctly encapsulates the rich cultural and literary heritage Punjab is so famously synonymous with. Love Stories from Punjab brings alive the forgotten magic of folklore that will tug at all the right strings of the heart, once again. Drama, romance, tragedy and history are interwoven in the form of an exquisite tapestry.

Just So Stories, Volume II

Rudyard Kipling - 2014
In this companion to Volume I, published in fall 2013, acclaimed children’s book illustrator Ian Wallace once again reinterprets the famous tales with luminous art, bringing Kipling to a new generation of young readers. Many of the tales are origin stories, explaining, for example, how an animal came to be, or the how the alphabet and writing began. They all display Kipling’s vivid imagination, inventive vocabulary and engaging word play. And once again Ian Wallace makes intriguing connections between the stories in his richly imagined illustrations. The second volume, as visually breathtaking as the first, includes “The Beginning of the Armadilloes,” “How the First Letter Was Written,” “How the Alphabet Was Made,” The Crab That Played with the Sea,” “The Cat That Walked by Himself” and “The Butterfly That Stamped.”The first edition of Just So Stories was published in Great Britain in 1902, along with black-and-white illustrations by Kipling himself. The stories have remained in print ever since, delighting young readers in many countries. This new edition, published more than 110 years after the original, has been edited to remove a few references now understood to be offensive.Inspired by these remarkable stories and the fact that they are set all over the world, Ian Wallace has chosen to make an annual donation to the International Board on Books for Young People’s Fund for Children in Crisis (www.ibby.org).

The Fisherman & His Soul, The Star-Child, and Other Stories

Oscar Wilde - 2014
It is well-documented that prior to their publication many of the stories were told by Oscar Wilde at dinner parties, where he always commanded the stage, and that alone should indicate his intended audience was adults. The stories were originally published in two volumes, and when asked directly if such intricate stories in the second volume as "The Fisherman and His Soul" were intended for children, Wilde replied, "I had about as much intention of pleasing the British child as I did of pleasing the British public." That disclaimer aside, there is much for adults to like in these deceptively simple tales, which only recently have begun to receive their due as serious literature.
