Percy Jackson's Greek Gods

Rick Riordan - 2014
But if it helps you to know your Greek gods, and survive an encounter with them if they ever show up in your face, then I guess writing all this down will be my good deed for the week." So begins Percy Jackson's Greek Gods, in which the son of Poseidon adds his own magic--and sarcastic asides--to the classics. He explains how the world was created, then gives readers his personal take on a who's who of ancients, from Apollo to Zeus. Percy does not hold back. "If you like horror shows, blood baths, lying, stealing, backstabbing, and cannibalism, then read on, because it definitely was a Golden Age for all that." Dramatic full-color illustrations throughout by Caldecott Honoree John Rocco make this volume--a must for home, library, and classroom shelves--as stunning as it is entertaining.

Hold Your Own

Kate Tempest - 2014
Based on the myth of the blind prophet Tiresias, Hold Your Own is a riveting tale of youth and experience, sex and love, wealth and poverty, community and alienation. Walking in the forest one morning, a young man disturbs two copulating snakes - and is punished by the goddess Hera, who turns him into a woman. This is only the beginning of his journey . . . Weaving elements of classical myth, autobiography and social commentary, Tempest uses the story of the gender-switching, clairvoyant Tiresias to create four sequences of poems: 'childhood', 'manhood', 'womanhood' and 'blind profit'. The result is a rhythmically hypnotic tour de force - and a hugely ambitious leap forward for one of the UK's most talented and compelling young writers.

The Amazons: Lives and Legends of Warrior Women Across the Ancient World

Adrienne Mayor - 2014
Heracles and Achilles displayed their valor in duels with Amazon queens, and the Athenians reveled in their victory over a powerful Amazon army. In historical times, Cyrus of Persia, Alexander the Great, and the Roman general Pompey tangled with Amazons. But just who were these bold barbarian archers on horseback who gloried in fighting, hunting, and sexual freedom? Were Amazons real? In this deeply researched, wide-ranging, and lavishly illustrated book, National Book Award finalist Adrienne Mayor presents the Amazons as they have never been seen before. This is the first comprehensive account of warrior women in myth and history across the ancient world, from the Mediterranean Sea to the Great Wall of China.Mayor tells how amazing new archaeological discoveries of battle-scarred female skeletons buried with their weapons prove that women warriors were not merely figments of the Greek imagination. Combining classical myth and art, nomad traditions, and scientific archaeology, she reveals intimate, surprising details and original insights about the lives and legends of the women known as Amazons. Provocatively arguing that a timeless search for a balance between the sexes explains the allure of the Amazons, Mayor reminds us that there were as many Amazon love stories as there were war stories. The Greeks were not the only people enchanted by Amazons—Mayor shows that warlike women of nomadic cultures inspired exciting tales in ancient Egypt, Persia, India, Central Asia, and China.Driven by a detective's curiosity, Mayor unearths long-buried evidence and sifts fact from fiction to show how flesh-and-blood women of the Eurasian steppes were mythologized as Amazons, the equals of men. The result is likely to become a classic.

The Lost Art of Resurrection

Freddy Silva - 2014
For centuries, every esoteric and Gnostic sect was aware that the literal interpretation of the resurrection of Christ promoted by the Church was a fraud. And with good reason: thousands of years before Jesus, initiates from Egypt and China to Celtic Britain and North America practiced a mystical ritual, and its adepts - from Zoroaster to Plato -regarded the experience as the pinnacle of spiritual development: a life-altering awakening that disclosed insights into the nature of reality and the self. But more importantly, as outlined on the walls of a secret chamber beneath one Egyptian pyramid, the experience of resurrection was not meant for the dead, but for the living. Its initiates were referred to as' risen from the dead'. Blending ancient traditions, science and first-hand accounts, this book offers a unique insight into living resurrection; the purpose of initiation; the cultures and societies who practiced it; the revelation of Jesus as a reenactment of the resurrection of Osiris; why initiates protected its secrets with their lives; and why the Church preferred you didn't know about this.

The Parthenon Enigma

Joan Breton Connelly - 2014
Since the Enlightenment, it has also come to represent our political ideals, the lavish temple to the goddess Athena serving as the model for our most hallowed civic architecture. But how much do the values of those who built the Parthenon truly correspond with our own? And apart from the significance with which we have invested it, what exactly did this marvel of human hands mean to those who made it?In this revolutionary book, Joan Breton Connelly challenges our most basic assumptions about the Parthenon and the ancient Athenians. Beginning with the natural environment and its rich mythic associations, she re-creates the development of the Acropolis—the Sacred Rock at the heart of the city-state—from its prehistoric origins to its Periklean glory days as a constellation of temples among which the Parthenon stood supreme. In particular, she probes the Parthenon’s legendary frieze: the 525-foot-long relief sculpture that originally encircled the upper reaches before it was partially destroyed by Venetian cannon fire (in the seventeenth century) and most of what remained was shipped off to Britain (in the nineteenth century) among the Elgin marbles. The frieze’s vast enigmatic procession—a dazzling pageant of cavalrymen and elders, musicians and maidens—has for more than two hundred years been thought to represent a scene of annual civic celebration in the birthplace of democracy. But thanks to a once-lost play by Euripides (the discovery of which, in the wrappings of a Hellenistic Egyptian mummy, is only one of this book’s intriguing adventures), Connelly has uncovered a long-buried meaning, a story of human sacrifice set during the city’s mythic founding. In a society startlingly preoccupied with cult ritual, this story was at the core of what it meant to be Athenian. Connelly reveals a world that beggars our popular notions of Athens as a city of staid philosophers, rationalists, and rhetoricians, a world in which our modern secular conception of democracy would have been simply incomprehensible. The Parthenon’s full significance has been obscured until now owing in no small part, Connelly argues, to the frieze’s dismemberment. And so her investigation concludes with a call to reunite the pieces, in order that what is perhaps the greatest single work of art surviving from antiquity may be viewed more nearly as its makers intended. Marshalling a breathtaking range of textual and visual evidence, full of fresh insights woven into a thrilling narrative that brings the distant past to life, The Parthenon Enigma is sure to become a landmark in our understanding of the civilization from which we claim cultural descent.

Reincarnation: Past Lives and the Akashic Record

Lois J. Wetzel - 2014
Wetzel,MFA, has written the long-awaited sequel to her first book, "Akashic Records: Case Studies of Past Lives." Yet "Reincarnation" takes the reader on a trip to the past like none other. Once again, riveting stories of the past lives of scores of different people are narrated. These lifetimes go back hundreds of thousands of years on Earth, allowing the reader glimpses of long-lost civilizations not contained in our historical record. In this book, unlike the first, the author challenges our ancient history as wrong, giving ample examples of proof we have lived on this swirling ball of minerals for hundreds of thousands of years! She talks about her past life readings for clients, but she also shares some of the spontaneous past life memories which others, including famous people, have had. The past lives of Lois' clients are shared so that the reader may learn and grow from the experiences of her clients. Naturally, clients' names and identifying information have been changed to protect their privacy. Surprisingly, some readers have said they actually felt some of their own past life issues were resolved as they read about the prior lifetimes of others. Why learn about our past lives? Isn’t this lifetime enough to handle? Because the whole story of who we are has to do with everything we have experienced. We know that who we are has a lot to do with our childhoods. Why would it not have to do with who we were in our prior lifetimes? Knowing about our past lives allows us to know more fully who we actually are at the level of the Immortal Soul. Why are we terrified of, instantly despise, or immediately adore someone we’ve just met? Why would we avoid visiting a certain location, even though there is no reason? Why do cruise ships or horses terrify us? Why are we so powerfully drawn to bow-hunting, cake decorating, scuba diving, fashion design or sailing having never experimented with it before? Why do some things come so easily people swear we have done it before? Why were we born with these predispositions? Are the answers in past lives? The author also includes correspondence between the clients and herself before and after the reading was done, so that we can see the client's experience of the reading, and the reaction to the reading and the information which came out of it. "Reincarnation" also discusses some truly strange concepts, like parallel and overlapping lifetimes, and why it may be possible to be alive in two bodies in different locations on a timeline that overlaps. Or how can we die and come back into the same body, remembering the out-of-body event with conscious awareness of ourselves while not in our bodies? All these topics and more lie between the pages of this fascinating and compelling book.

The Early Prophets: Joshua, Judges, Samuel, and Kings: The Schocken Bible, Volume II

Everett Fox - 2014
The personalities who appear in the pages of The Early Prophets, and the political and moral dilemmas their stories illuminate, are part of the living consciousness of the Western world. From Joshua and the tumbling walls of Jericho to Samson and Delilah, the prophet Samuel and the tragic King Saul, David and Goliath, Bathsheba and Absalom, King Solomon’s temple, Elijah and the chariot of fire, Ahab and Jezebel—the stories of these men and women are deeply etched into Western culture because they beautifully encapsulate the human experience. The four books that comprise The Early Prophets look at tribal rivalries, dramatic changes in leadership, and the intrusions of neighboring empires through the prism of the divine-human relationship. Over the centuries, the faithful have read these narratives as demonstrations of the perils of disobeying God’s will, and time and again Jews in exile found that the stories spoke to their own situations of cultural assimilation, destruction, and the reformulation of identity. They have had an equally indelible impact on generations of Christians, who have seen in many of the narratives foreshadowings of the life and death of Jesus, as well as models for their own lives and the careers of their leaders. But beyond its importance as a foundational religious document, The Early Prophets is a great work of literature, a powerful and distinctive narrative of the past that seeks meaning in the midst of national catastrophe. Accompanied by illuminating commentary, notes, and maps, Everett Fox’s masterly translation of the Hebrew original re-creates the echoes, allusions, alliterations, and wordplays that rhetorically underscore its meaning and are intrinsic to a timeless text meant to be both studied and read aloud.

Heaven and Hell Unveiled: Updates from the World of Spirit.

Stafford Betty - 2014
A few of these, like Professor Stafford Betty’s "The Afterlife Unveiled," show what spirits—humans who have survived death—tell us about their world. All the evidence suggests they are closer to The Source—which some call God. And that closeness, far from freeing them from religion, inspires in them a more joyous religion than anything they knew on earth. This book is about the religion they practice—and the one we’ll be practicing, if we want to, in a few short years. More importantly, it will inspire in us a sense of life’s importance here and now. Life on Earth is a great gift, and we should not waste our time drifting from distraction to distraction, or hemmed in by a religious orthodoxy that stifles and suffocates. We have our souls to build, and the spirits show us, both by example and instruction, how to go about it. The religions we’ve fashioned here on earth for our use could all use an upgrade. They are mere moons that should derive their light from the central sun. This book is about that sun.

Living the Personal Myth: Making the Magic of Faerie Real in One's Own Life

The Silver Elves - 2014
It is a unique narrative about a psychological study of the magic of living one's personal myth, in effect, making one's dream and vision of one's self come true by living it. It is a personal guide to becoming one's true s'elf as one inwardly knows one's s'elf to be. What makes this book particularly interesting is that the author considers himself to be an elf, yet he has an astute scientific mind that he uses to psychologically examine his identification with the otherkin world. He explores his personal myth and life as an elf and demonstrates how basing one's myth on real events in one's life empowers one's myth and one's magic. Whatever or whoever you are, this book is a potent guide to realizing one's genuine, and potentially powerful, magical and fantastic, nature. The author uses dream work techniques, oracle readings, and active imagination to take us through a depth psychology exploration of his own experience in the individuation process of becoming a whole person whose unconscious and conscious elements are integrated and who is a unique individual. Much of the material in this book is based on a depth process study he conducted at Sonoma State University in the Depth Psychology Department in 2005. This work suggests "Personal Myth" to be an understanding of the self that incorporates the symbolic, imaginal and fantasy elements of the unconscious and accepts them as real within their own realms of being. It is the author's belief that the Personal Myth is the unconscious' understanding of the individual spirit's Cosmic aspirations and potentialities. In that way, Personal Myth is seen as the personality of the unconscious and of the individual's spirit.

There's also my cousin Roman. He's my age and unlike anyone I've ever met before. There's something unsettling about him and the way he tries to push me outside my comfort zone. The attraction is powerful and so much stronger than I've ever experienced before. I know I shouldn't crave their touch by simply being in their presence, but it's as if they spellbind me when I'm around them. I'm usually quite level-headed, but when I find it a struggle to keep my hands to myself, I realize this sway they have over me isn't normal. Nothing in Cherry Creek seems normal. The Lost City: Drake's Revenge

D.L. Colón - 2014
As always there was war, poverty, power struggles and a new leader for different years, until 2014. That was when the trumpets were heard. What many thought was the coming of God was, instead, a race for survival. The heavens opened up, not to receive new souls, but it opened to release the battalions of heaven's warriors against a known enemy, The Demons of Hell. The Demons of Hell, led by Raphael, came with one thing in mind, Total Annihilation of The Angels of Heaven. The Angels of Heaven, led by Gabriel and given free reign by God, came with one thing in mind, Total Supremacy over The Demons of Hell. Since they needed neutral ground to fight against each other they used the one available, Earth.Humanity was pushed to the brink of destruction during the war and people with abilities came to exist in the middle of the conflict. There was a decision made by each side to use one of their Lieutenants to gather intelligence from the enemy. The Angels chose Maria Faith for this task and Hell chose Simon Black. What neither side expected was for Maria and Simon to fall for each other. Even though they kept fighting the war for their sides on Earth, they were quickly losing interest in the battle. They decided to leave the war and build a life together. Both Heaven and Hell kept watch on them but left them alone until something happened. Maria became pregnant with Simon's son. On top of everything else, the boy was half Angel and half Demon.Heaven and Hell couldn't let the boy live so they plotted to kill him. Maria and Simon, who named the boy Drake Blackfaith, found out about this before the attack and they took Drake to a Guild named Never Too Late. They left Drake with the Guild and a letter, which he was to be given on his 25th birthday. The day of the attack, instead of killing Maria and Simon, Heaven captured Simon and Hell captured Maria. Both of them were to be tortured into revealing the location of Drake. Both Heaven and Hell wanted him because of a prophecy that was passed down 600 years before that says....On the eve of his 25th year, Heaven and Hell cannot do anything except hide, his wrath and hate cannot be stopped. Both of his sides will unite, to save or destroy what's left of Earth. Heed my warning, for it will come to pass. Nothing can stop it, it's just a matter of time.....Now the year is 3014 and the war still rages on. Drake is approaching his 25th birthday and this is where our story begins...

The Mathematical Universe (The God Series)

Mike Hockney - 2014
It’s made of ontological mathematics. It’s a living, thinking, self-optimising holographic organism composed of immortal, indestructible, ontological mathematical units called monads, defined by the most powerful and beautiful equation in the whole of mathematics: Euler’s Formula. Monads have a much more resonant name: souls. We all inhabit Soul World, a wondrous Singularity outside space and time. Our souls are individual mathematical singularities: autonomous, uncaused, uncreated, dimensionless frequency domains. Via Fourier mathematics, these imperishable, immaterial monadic souls can collectively create the spacetime domain of the material world. Where each soul is a single frequency domain, the material world of space and time is their collective Fourier output. What is “matter”? It’s simply dimensional energy: energy existing in the Fourier spacetime domain rather than in the Fourier dimensionless frequency domain. Souls are immense mathematical vibrations, based on precise, analytic cosine waves and imaginary sine waves (hence are defined by complex numbers rather than the real numbers of scientific materialism). From these waves, we get wave mechanics (quantum mechanics) and holography, i.e. a complete explanation of the material world. Fourier mathematics solves the previously intractable problem of Cartesian dualism (the famous mind-body problem), i.e. how unextended minds can interact with extended matter. Minds are just Fourier frequency domains and bodies Fourier spacetime domains. Bodies are nothing but an alternative mathematical way of representing mental information. They are mental constructs or projections, and have no independent existence. What was the Big Bang? It was a purely mathematical operation in which a frequency domain of mathematical souls (a Singularity), outside space and time, generated a Fourier spacetime domain: a cosmic hologram grounded in quantum mechanics. It really is as simple as that. As Plato recognised, true reality belongs to the intelligible domain (which, mathematically, is an eternal, immutable frequency domain based on Euler’s Formula). Illusory, contingent reality constitutes the sensible domain studied by scientists. It’s the rational mind, not sensory experiments, that reveals the eternal, intelligible truths of reason. The sensible world is all about “truths of fact”, which have no eternal necessity. Reality is defined by a single mathematical law: the God Equation, derived from Euler’s Formula. This single equation generates and controls the entire universe. It’s the True God – an all-powerful ontological equation, but it’s certainly not a person. It’s outside space and time and yet can create space and time. It’s the uncaused cause of everything, the Prime Mover. What, at root, are mind and life? They are simply the eternal flow of structured information – mathematical waves. Consciousness is what arises when this information flow becomes self-aware and can attach “I” to itself. Information is all about numbers. As Pythagoras said, “All things are numbers; number rules all.” He was asserting that we inhabit a universe of information, of ontological mathematics. Leibniz was the greatest of all the inheritors of Pythagoras’s mathematical legacy. His principle of sufficient reason is the quintessence of ontological mathematics. With this principle and the Leibnizian doctrine of compossibility, it can be shown that Max Tegmark’s Mathematical Multiverse and indeed all Multiverse theories are fallacious.

Stories from Herodotus

Lorna Oakes - 2014
Herodotus wrote the first history book in the world. That is why he is sometimes called the ‘Father of History’. He lived about 2,500 years ago in the fifth century BC. He was born at a place called Halicarnassus in Asia Minor. The modern names for these places are Bodrum in Turkey. Herodotus was a keen traveller who went all over the Ancient World and was interested in everything he saw and heard. When he came back from his travels he went to Athens in Greece and gave lectures about the places he had visited. Finally he decided to write a book about them. In the later part of his life he went to Italy where he did more work on his book and finally died there in 425 BC.His stories are so gripping that even today people are retelling them. In 2007, Hollywood made the blockbuster movie, 300, about King Leonidas and the battle of Thermopylae. The stories in this book are appropriate to Key Stage 2 National Curriculum. However, children of all ages will revel in their timeless appeal and cultural value.
