Saptarshi - The Seven Supreme Sages (Amar Chitra Katha)

Anant Pai
In each manavantara Brahma creates seven exceptional sages from his mind, who represent supreme knowledge and righteousness. It is their duty to see that law and order is maintained in the Universe. We live in the Vaivasvata Manavantara. Amar Chitra Katha has captured stories from the inspiring and remarkable lives of the seven sages chosen to represent the current manavantara. Atri was known for his honesty and for his devotion. He was married to Anasuya who was a very pious woman and capable of great deeds. Atri's life spanned many yugas. He played a role in the events of the Ramayana as well as the Mahabharata. Vasishtha was the voice of wisdom and honesty. He was the kulguru to the Solar Dynasty and tutored Rama and his brothers. Kashyapa is considered the father of all living beings. Brahma gave him the task of creating life for swargaloka, bhooloka and patal-loka.The origin of all creatures can be traced back to Kashyapa and his wives. The proud King Kaushika had a troubled relationship with Sage Vasishtha. He wanted to become a Brahmarshi just like him. The story tells of his transformation into the accomplished sage, Vishwamitra. Gautama and his wife, Ahalya, overcame the mistrust and insults of the people of Brahmagiri and brought Ganga to the parched land. Jamadagni, who was a proficient student of the Vedas, was chosen by Vishnu to be his father during his avatar as Parashurama. Bharadwaja's thirst for knowledge was so great that he prayed to Indra for a long life so he had enough time to learn. With Indra's blessing he spread the knowledge he had learnt, around the world. The seven sages are said to reside in the heavens as stars of the Saptarshi Mandal.

The Children's Encyclopedia (Ten Volume Set)

Arthur Mee
Volume one (of ten volumes) is digitally preserved here: http://childrensencyclopedia.blogspot...The Children's Encyclopedia, originally titled The Children's Encyclopædia, was a printed encyclopedia originated by Arthur Mee, and published by the Educational Book Company Ltd., a subsidiary of the Amalgamated Press of London. It was published from 1908 through to 1964, and was found in many family homes throughout the British Empire. The format of the Encyclopedia was unusual: because it was originally published in fortnightly parts between March 1908 and February 1910. Some readers could have bound their own collections, but the first eight-volume sets were published in 1910.Each section contained a variety of articles, developing its various topics as it progressed. The work could be used as a conventional reference library (the last volume contained a very extensive alphabetical index), or each section could perhaps be read from start to finish. Articles could also be dipped into at random to provide entertainment and reading matter whenever required. The Encyclopedia was originally organised into the following sections (there were some changes in subsequent editions). (Some of these titles in fact cover scientific subjects such as geology, biology, astronomy, etc. but such scientific terms were generally avoided.) * Familiar Things, by "Many writers" * Wonder, by "The Wise Man" * Nature, by Ernest Bryant and Edward Step * The Child’s Own Life, by Dr. Caleb Saleeby * The Earth, by Dr. Caleb Saleeby * All Countries, by Frances Epps * Great Lives, by "Many writers" * Golden Deeds, by "Many writers" * Bible Stories, by Harold Begbie * Famous Books, by John Hammerton * Stories, by Edward Wright * Poetry, by John Hammerton * School Lessons, by several writers, including Lois Mee, Arthur's sister * Things To Make and Things To Do, by "Many writers"The Encyclopædia broke new ground in the approach to education, aiming to make learning interesting and enjoyable. Its articles were clearly written. Some - in particular the scientific series - would have been challenging even to intelligent teenagers. It aimed above all to develop character and sense of duty. The Encyclopedia was re-edited for the US market and retitled The Book of Knowledge (1911-12). A new company, Grolier, was founded to publish and distribute the book.

Who Was ... ?: Albert Einstein / Alva Edison / Isaac Newton / Charles Darwin / Walt Disney

Jess M. Brallier
Description:- Who Was Albert Einstein? Everyone has heard of Albert Einstein but what exactly did he do? How much do kids really know about Albert Einstein besides the funny hair and genius label? For instance, do they know that he was expelled from school as a kid? Finally, here's the story of Albert Einstein's life, told in a fun, engaging way that clearly explores the world he lived in and changed. Who Was Thomas Alva Edison? One day in 1882, Thomas Edison flipped a switch that lit up lower Manhattan with incandescent light and changed the way people live ever after. The electric light bulb was only one of thousands of Edison's inventions, which include the phonograph and the kinetoscope, an early precursor to the movie camera. Who Was Isaac Newton Isaac Newton was always a loner, preferring to spend his time contemplating the mysteries of the universe. When the plague broke out in London in 1665 he was forced to return home from college. It was during this period of so much death, that Newton gave life to some of the most important theories in modern science, including gravity and the laws of motion. Who Was Charles Darwin? As a young boy, Charles Darwin hated school and was often scolded forconducting "useless" experiments. Yet his passion for the natural world was so strong that he suffered through terrible seasickness during his five-year voyage aboard The Beagle. Who Was Walt Disney? Walt Disney always loved to entertain people. Often it got him into trouble. Once he painted pictures with tar on the side of his family's white house. His family was poor, and the happiest time of his childhood was spent living on a farm in Missouri. His affection for small-town life is reflected in Disneyland Main Streets around the world.

Retro Classics: The Victor presents... Alf Tupper: The Tough of the Track

Brendan Foster
A welder from the northern town of Greystone, Alf works under the railway arches and lives on a diet of bread and marge, supplemented, when he can afford them, by fish and chips from his local chippie.Although he often struggles to arrive at meets on time thanks to his opponents' skullduggery, he is a phenomenal long- and middle-distance runner, racing for Greystone Harriers in all kinds of events from marathons, cross country and 10,000 metres, to mile, half-mile and hurdles. Alf is always the underdog, often running against posh toffs who devise underhand ways of keeping him off the winner's rostrum. Although The Tough of the Track often looks as if he's beaten near the end of a race, he nearly always comes good in the final few strides, shouting 'I've run him!' as he breasts the tape in a photo-finish for first place.
