Rackham's Color Illustrations for Wagner's "Ring"

Arthur Rackham - 1979
I have seldom coveted anything as I coveted that book." — C.S. LewisBefore portraying Wagner's "Ring," Arthur Rackham (1867–1939) had become England's leading illustrator through his interpretations of fairy and fantastic books: Grimm's Fairy Tales, Rip van Winkle, Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens, A Midsummer-Night's Dream. With his insight into elves, twisted oaks, and bearded heroes, Wagner was the logical step: with the "Ring," Rackham brought his talent for ethereal watercolor and line into new realms of adult mythology. This edition reproduces, in full color, all 64 watercolor illustrations from Siegfried & The Twilight of the Gods (1911) and The Rhinegold & The Valkyrie (1912). The original English and American editions also contained black-and-white vignettes and tailpieces, a selection of which appear here: the original text, a dated English translation of the libretto, has been replaced by comprehensive descriptive captions and an introduction by James Spero.Rackham poured all his mature fancy into the "Ring." The gnarled Nibelung Alberich sports with teasing Rhinemaidens, fiery Loge and lordly Wotan tussle with giants and serpents. An ecstatic Brünnhilde is finally consumed on Siegfried's funeral pyre in perhaps the most successful representation of this scene anywhere, either graphically or theatrically. Wagner's Teutonic forests and caves give Rackham free reign for his brooding, haunting nature backgrounds; characters, costumes, and all the tiny details are painted with such textual accuracy and empathy that today's opera companies who wish to return to staging the "Ring" in the traditional manner turn to Rackham's paintings for guidance. The painstaking reproduction of these artworks brings Arthur Rackham's most heroic visions to the many collectors and admirers who cannot obtain the expensive out-of-print editions. With the aid of the clear captions, the Wagnerian cycle may be followed once again in its most time-honored and rich interpretation.

Sigmund Freud

Ralph Steadman - 1979
The result is a masterful interplay of text and illustration, visual and verbal puns, and unexpected insight.Sigmund Freud bursts defiantly and gleefully beyond the bounds of orthodox biography. It is a wildly humorous exercise in bending, stretching and speculating on the activities of the so-called Father of Psychoanalysis. Ralph Steadman wields his shrewd wit and fierce pen to highlight the ebbs and tides of Freud's life and career from early childhood to the moment of death. But there's a twist. Rich illustrations and witty text work hand in hand to transform each scene into a "joking situation," which the artist hilariously examines according to the techniques wielded by Freud himself in his 1905 book on humor and the unconscious mind. The result is a fantastic Freudian festival of visual and verbal puns, unexpected insights, and sheer intellectual enjoyment.Originally published in hardcover in 1979, released in paperback in 1997, and reprinted numerous times since then, we are presenting it again to remind buyers that Freud has not and will not leave the unconscious mind of the public (and he would likely have something to say about what books they buy).Sigmund Freud is superbly illustrated with more than 50 major drawings and 25 vignettes by a renowned master of the pen. It remains one of the most original illustrated books of our times and a Ralph Steadman classic.

The Sense of Unity: The Sufi Tradition in Persian Architecture

Nader Ardalan - 1979
In the Sense of Unity, a handsomely illustrated volume and the first extended work of its kind, Nader Ardalan and Laleh Bakhtiar examine the architecture of Persia as a manifestation of Islamic tradition and demonstrate the synthesis of traditional Persian thought and form. The most fundamental principle of Sufism, the inner, esoteric dimension of Islam, is that of unity in multiplicity. This view sees in every aspect of reality a reflection of a transcendent source which is given symbolic expression through all of man's activities, most directly and importantly through his works of art. The authors of The Sense of Unity show how all the elements of the Islamic architecture of Persiafrom the simplest architectural unit to a complex urban environmentare woven around this central doctrine and thus are best understood as multiple manifestations of unity. The Sense of Unity is illustrated with photographs, drawing, charts, and tables which are an integral part of its argument and which exemplify, in abundant and striking detail, the principles discussed in the text. Presenting to the Western reader for the first time the insights of the Iranian cultural tradition, the book also offers a stimulating new way of thinking about man and his relationship to his milieu.

Spanning the years 1911 to 1975, these extravagant, imaginative designs include costumes for well-known personalities, Folies-Bergère shows, editions of George White's Scandals, and ballets. Many exotic and historical fashions include Egyptian, Chinese, Persian, Japanese, Russian, and French styles. The lavish, flowing costumes are complemented by different colors to create different moods: deep, lustrous purples, reds, and browns for dynamic, vibrant figures; ochre, sienna, orange, and beige for more formal characters; and pale blue, lavenders, greens, grays, and blacks for people of mystery and hidden powers. As dazzling as Erté’s color graphics and as witty as his fashion designs, this compilation merits the attention of costume designers, artists, theater people, costume aficionados, and all who appreciate the treatment of costume design as a fine art.

Yantra: The Tantric Symbol of Cosmic Unity

Madhu Khanna - 1979

Every aspect of this important Indian symbol is explored, from its related sounds, rituals, and use in meditation to its application in traditional temple architecture and sculpture. Master Snickup's Cloak

Alexander Theroux - 1979
It weaves a web of Gothic horror around a story of childhood love, tragically betrayed. Alexander Theroux creates a pageant of characters that wittily parodies 20th-century preconceptions of the Dark Ages. Amongst these characters are the divinely beautiful but mercenary Superfecta; the money-grabbing burgher, Mijnheer van Cats; and Master Snickup himself, wanderer, ascetic and recluse. Brian Froud's illustrations depict in subtle colors a world teeming with tiny spirits and mutant devils. The text is set as in an antique parchment, a context that perfectly complements Theroux's wryly humorous fable.

Ward 81

Mary Ellen Mark - 1979
While on set, Mark met the women of Ward 81, the only locked hospital security ward for women in the state: the inmates were considered dangerous to themselves or to others. In February of 1976, just before the ward closed (it ceased to exist in November of 1977, when it became the female section of a coeducational treatment ward), Mark and Karen Folger Jacobs, a writer and social scientist, were given permission to make a more extended stay, living on the ward in order to photograph and interview the women. They spent 36 days on Ward 81, photographing and documenting. Jacobs recalls their slow, inevitable assimilation: "We felt the degeneration of our own bodies and the erosion of our self-confidence. We were horrified at the thought of what we might become after a year or two of confinement and therapy on Ward 81." This new hardcover edition adds 10 new pictures to the original. Ward 81 is a sobering investigation into the lives and treatment of the mentally ill.

African Art in Motion

Robert Farris Thompson - 1979
Textiles, sculptures, masks, costumes, and a variety of implements and musical instruments are lavishly illustrated and interpreted from the aesthetic that in Africa, 'icon' and 'act' are one, that African art can best be understood in the context of dance. The work is divided into three sections:(1) a list of highly abstract concepts such as 'ephebism' and 'coolness' which Thompson contends underlie African aesthetics;(2) an extended analysis of the significance of sculptures standing, sitting, riding, kneeling, supporting, and balancing; and(3) descriptions of six different dance events combining masks, poetry, music, and religious ritual, and their effects on their audiences.Representing scholarship and writing at its best, the work is a major contribution to the study of the arts as they are conceived, combined, and criticized by Africans.

This new edition of "Art in Its Own Terms" restores to print a key statement in the ongoing discussion between Modern art and its past, as Porter reviews such figures as de Kooning, Johns, Cornell, Rodin, Cezanne, Leonardo and many others. Equally seminal are his considerations of the relations between art and science and art and politics. Rackstraw Downes' introduction beautifully sets the stage for this indispensable and wide-ranging volume.

Arthur Rackham's Book of Pictures

Arthur Rackham - 1979
His images enjoyed both popular and critical success, conveying a mood of joy and wonder in a style that has influenced generations of children and artists. This splendid survey of Rackham's early, pre–World War II work features 44 color plates in addition to several black-and-white vignettes and spot illustrations. The images consist of the goblins, giants, elves, fairies, and other grotesque and fantastic creatures that Rackham depicted so well. Fanciful scenes portray characters from familiar fairy tales — Jack and the Beanstalk, the Frog Prince, Puss in Boots, and the Snow Queen — as well as folkloric figures such as Jack Frost and Mother Goose and idealized portraits of Edwardian-era children. This volume includes many long-unavailable works that are not to be found elsewhere. Brief captions identify the source of each image.

Super Realism

Edward Lucie-Smith - 1979
The author believes that it must be related not merely to the art movements which immediately preceded its birth, but to the whole of the realistic tradition in European art, from Caravaggio onwards. He sees it as being linked to a specifically American vision, but thinks that the work of artists such as Malcolm Morley, Ralph Goings, Chuck Close, and Duane Hanson has now begun to have a significant effect on young artists in Europe, and traces some of its ramifications among painters and sculptors in Britain, West Germany, Spain, and Portugal.

Form and Meaning: Writings on the Renaissance and Modern Art

Robert Klein - 1979
The collection also suggests Klein's astonishing further range: painting and phenomenology, Baudelaire's A Season in Hell, "The Eclipse of the Work of Art," "Utopian Urban Planning," and many other issues in modern and Renaissance culture."For readers interested in the Italian Renaissance - its art, symbols, emblems, allegories, aesthetic theories, philosophy, and science - the essays of Robert Klein are capital works. I know of nothing in recent writings more thoughtful and searching. Klein's command of the old and new literature is impressively thorough, and ranges from the technical treatises on perspective to the abstruse speculations of the philosophers."'Form and Meaning' includes several challenging essays on the concepts underlying twentieth-century painting. These are the works of a keen mind, equally at home in philosophy and the history of art. - Meyer Schapiro"Klein had a prodigious intellectual curiosity and did not shut it off when faced with the works of his own time." - The New York Times Book Review

Musical Instruments and Their Symbolism in Western Art: Studies in Musical Iconology

Emanuel Winternitz - 1979
This book first appeared in 1967.  In the years since then, it has spawned the new academic sub-discipline of musical iconology, which belongs equally to the histories of art and of music.  Emmanuel Winternitz, who was for thirty-one years Curator of Musical Collections at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, is one of the world’s leading authorities on the history of musical instruments.  He is also an erudite historian of art.  Combining these two interests he has for many years studied the innumerable representations of musical instruments in Western art.  In this collection of closely related articles, he examines what these pictures tell of the design and construction of instruments, of their performance, practice, and of the often subtle symbolic use to which artists put them.  Kithara and cittern, lute and lyre, bagpipe and hurdy-gurdy, and the ubiquitous lira da braccio, all of these figured largely in the art of the Middle Ages or the Renaissance, together with a clutch of shwms, zinks, and crumhorns, and a variety of fantastic instruments that existed only in the imagination of the artists.  In more than 200 photographs and many drawings, Winternizt illustrates instruments that range from an Egytptian wall-painting of a harp to a musette in a Watteau Fête champêtre.  He draws from the works of Titian, Raphael, Dürer, and Bruegel, and also from medieval manuscripts and sculpture.  Winternitz discusses these diverse elements with a combination of formidable learning, wit, and keen insight that makes this book at once a seminal work for scholars and a delight for lovers of art and music.

Italian Hilltowns

Norman F. Carver - 1979
The book covers all regions of Italy, with particular emphasis on little-known places where we can still glimpse a way of life and an atmosphere hardly changed in hundreds of years. These photographs may be among the last records of this important period in urban history, as many of the towns are now increasingly abandoned or ravaged by change. Drawing on his experience in many parts of the world, the author first examines the significance of folk architecture in general and its implications for a modern urbanized world. He then demonstreates this significance with perceptive photographs and commentary as he explores the integration of architecture, man and landscape in the Italian hilltown.A new, expanded edition, this volume includes computer enhanced images including 40 new photographs, some in color.
