Beer explains that she, a nurse's aide, could have caused trouble for her fellow nurse because the Nazi regime frowned upon forming friendships with prisoners, with people who were not Nordic Aryans, and because the onion was a rare commodity by 1943 and it was illegal to buy via a black market.
