The Road to Le Tholonet: A French Garden Journey

Montagu Don - 2013
It is the story of a man travelling round France visiting a few selected French gardens on the way. Owners, intrigues, affairs, marriages, feuds, thwarted ambitions and desires, the largely unnamed ordinary gardeners, wars, plots and natural disasters run through every garden older than a generation or two and fill every corner of the grander historical ones. Families marry. Gardeners are poached. Political allegiances forged and shattered. The human trail crosses from garden to garden. They sit in their surrounding landscape, not as isolated islands but attached umbilically to it, sharing the geology, the weather, food, climate, local folklore, accent and cultural identity. Wines must be drunk and food tasted. Recipes found and compared. The perfect tarte-tartin pursued. None of these things can be ignored or separated from the shape and size of parterre, fountain, herbaceous border or pottager. So this is a book filled with stories and information, some of it about French gardens and gardening, but most of it about what makes France unlike anywhere else. From historical gardens like Versailles,Vaux le Vicomte and Courances to the kitchen gardens of the Michelin chef Alain Passard. There are grand potagers like Villandry and La Prieure D'Orsan and allotments and back gardens spotted on the way. Monty celebrates the obvious French associations of food and wine and finds gardens dedicated to vegetables, herbs and fruit. It is a book that any visitor to France, whether gardeners or not, will want to read both as a guide and an inspiration. It is a portal to get under the French cultural skin and to understand the country, in all its huge variety and disparity, a little better.

Veiled Wings

Mazzy J. March - 2021
A little fact my parents failed to mention the entire time I was growing up. Then when it was time to apply to college, when all my friends were taking the SAT, I was informed that would not be necessary. I was a legacy to the Sciathian Academy, a private college so exclusive, I would find it in none of the brochures in my high school counselor’s office. No need to fill out an application or take the SAT. They apparently had their own tests… No financial aid forms because the families who sent their children there had funded the school with a legacy a long time ago. No need to do anything but show up and settle into my dorm.Pretty sweet. Also a little concerningEspecially when the private jet lands at an isolated airfield and I am ushered into a long, black car along with three other girls who all seem to have known one another since kindergarten and who are chattering away in another language. Gaelic, I think. And since I’d just left behind everyone and everything I knew, this did not bode well for the future. If everyone spoke this language, how would I even attend classes? Or pass a test?As if Fae Academy wasn’t hard enough, there are three guys that all want to date me.Wait, do fairies date? I think they have soul mates or something. Heck, I don’t even know what my powers are yet. I was never in the spotlight in high school, so why in the world am I the shining light here?Just when I decided to buckle down and study to be the best fairy I can, the whole world breaks open. For some reason the headmaster thinks I am the one who can intervene. I can’t even move a pebble or conjure up a rain cloud and they want me to save us?Dream on.I’m not the Fae for the job.

The Roots of My Obsession: Thirty Great Gardeners Reveal Why They Garden

Thomas C. Cooper - 2012
They show that gardening is a passion and obsession that cannot be conquered or abandoned, only indulged. Each gardener tells a compelling story. Whether their muse is the quest to achieve a personal vision of ultimate beauty, a mission to heal the earth, or the attempt to grow a perfect heirloom tomato, the writing is direct, engaging, and from the heart. For Doug Tallamy, a love of plants is rooted first in a love of animals: "animals with two legs (birds), four legs (box turtles, salamanders, and foxes), six legs (butterflies and beetles), eight legs (spiders), dozens of legs (centipedes), hundreds of legs (millipedes), and even animals with no legs (snakes and pollywogs)." For Rosalind Creasy, it's "not the plant itself; it's how you use it in the garden." And for Sydney Eddison, the reason has changed throughout the years. Now, she "gardens for the moment."As you read, you may find yourself nodding your head in agreement, or gasping in disbelief. What you're sure to encounter is some of the best writing about the gardener's soul ever to appear. For anyone who cherishes the miracle of bringing forth life from the soil, "The Roots of My Obsession" is essential inspiration.

Mall Santas

J.B. Trepagnier - 2019
Until last year. Last year, I was supposed to get married in Vegas at the stroke of midnight on Christmas day. I had the perfect wedding planned. If only I’d picked the perfect fiancé. I caught him in our bed with some blonde two days before the wedding and now I’ve turned into Scrooge.Everyone is used to my epic Christmas cards, but I can’t come up with an appropriate theme this year. We have one of the biggest malls in the country and they decided to allow dogs in for Santa photos. I was a little bummed the fire department was supplying the Santas instead of getting a photo of my pit bull with someone who really did look like Santa. That is, until my Santa is drop dead gorgeous and treats my dog well. A balloon pops and spooks my dog. Queenie bolts and gets lost in sea of Christmas shoppers in a hug mall. Cue four hot firemen dressed as Santa to my rescue. They all really want to help find my dog. They are treating this like a covert, black ops mission. They are all so sweet too.If we can find my dog, I intend to invite them back home for a home cooked meal. They all have to work on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Maybe I can have a better Christmas than last year and make the holidays better for four great guys who do so much for the community. Proceeds from Mall Santas will be going towards the rescue I adopted my own goofy pit bull from 2 days before Christmas 6 years ago. They took in a lot of sick kittens during kitten season and have a large tab at the local vet. My contact at the rescue advised the donation would be best used by going directly towards their vet bill and the vet also had a fundraiser set up in their name
