U. S. Grant and the American Military Tradition

Bruce Catton - 1954
    S. Grant and the American Military Tradition, Pulitzer Prize–winning historian Bruce Catton explores the life and legacy of one of the nation’s greatest and most misunderstood heroes, before, during, and after the terrible War Between the States that violently split the country in two. Beginning with Ulysses S. Grant’s youth in Ohio and his service as a young lieutenant under General Zachary Taylor in the Mexican-American War, the story continues through Grant’s post-war disgrace, his forced resignation for drinking, and his failures as a citizen farmer and salesman. But after the Civil War broke out, Grant rose from the rank of an unknown solider to commanding general of the US Army, finding redemption as the military savior of the embattled Union.   Proving his reputation as America’s premiere expert on the Civil War, Catton examines Grant’s campaigns in enthralling detail, including Fort Henry; Shiloh; the Siege of Vicksburg, which set the Confederate enemy on the inevitable road to defeat; and Robert E. Lee’s surrender at Appomattox Court House, which solidified Grant as a figure of national acclaim. Catton then explores Grant’s two-term presidency and final years, casting an illuminating new light on a complex and controversial national figure whose great accomplishments have all too often been downplayed or overlooked.

I'm Fine...and Other Lies

Whitney Cummings - 2017
Look at you, ogling my book page. . . . I presume if you're reading this it means you either need more encouragement to buy it, you're very bored in an airport, or we used to date and you're trying to figure out if you should sue me or not. Here are all the stories and mistakes I've made that were way too embarrassing to tell on stage in front of an actual audience; but thanks to not-so-modern technology, you can read about them here so I don't have to risk having your judgmental eye contact crush my self-esteem. This book contains some delicious schadenfreude in which I recall such humiliating debacles as breaking my shoulder while trying to impress a guy, coming very close to spending my life in a Guatemalan prison, and having my lacerated ear sewn back on by a deaf guy after losing it in a torrid love affair. In addition to hoarding mortifying situations that'll make you feel way better about your choices, I've also accumulated a lot of knowledge from therapists, psychotherapists, and psychopaths, which can probably help you avoid making the same mistakes I've made. Think of this book as everything you'd want from the Internet all in one place, except without the constant distractions of ads, online shopping, and porn.I'm not sure what else to say to say, except that you should buy it if you want to laugh and learn how to stop being crazy. If you're bored at an airport, I'm sorry and welcome to most days of my life on the road. And if we used to date, see you in court.

I Hate Everyone... Starting with Me

Joan Rivers - 2012
She’s also opinionated—especially when it comes to people she hates. Like people who think giving birth is a unique achievement. Or well-adjusted, a.k.a. boring, ex-child stars who don’t even have a decent addiction. With all of her diverse experiences, it stands to reason that Joan has seen, done, said, and heard a lot of hateful things. Thank god, she took notes. Here—uncensored and totally uninhibited—she gives the best of her worst to First Ladies, closet cases, hypocrites, Hollywood, feminists, and overrated historical figures. And even when letting herself have it, Joan doesn’t hold back in this honest, unabashedly hilarious love letter to the hater in all of us.

See Me

Tella Alvarez
From the outside, you could never tell. She's beautiful, smart, popular. After she's assaulted by someone she once trusted, she begins to fall deeper into the depths of her depression. Her own friends are oblivious to her struggles, except one. If you could even call him a friend.'See Me’ is an emotional journey through the eyes of a girl who has forgotten how to live and instead barely survives in her numbness. Read as she stumbles and fails, learns to hope and fight in a society of injustice, pressure, and insincerity. A testament to the young girls and people trying to find themselves in a world trying to silence them… and the people that do everything they can to help them be seen and to see. Each paragraph holds a reality that you will either relate to on a personal level, or you will empathize with as you hold your breath—waiting for the moment she either chooses to fight or to succumb to the pressures of her unrelenting thoughts.
