The Scarlet Ibis: Poems
Susan Hahn - 2007
The resonance of this image grows through each section of the book as Hahn skillfully employs theme and variation, counterpoint and mirroring techniques. The ibis first appears as part of an illusion, the disappearing object in a magician’s trick, which then evokes the greatest disappearing act of all—death—where there are no tricks to bring about a reappearance. The rich complexity multiplies as the second section focuses on a disappearing lady and a dramatic final section brings together the bird and the lady in their common plight—both caged by their mortality, their assigned time and role. All of the illusions fall away during this brilliant denouement as the two voices share a dialogue on the power of metaphor as the very essence of poetry. bird trick iv It’s all about disappearance. About a bird in a cagewith a mirror, a simple twiston the handle at the sidethat makes it come and go at the magician’s insistence. It’s all about innocence. It’s all about acceptance. It’s all about compliance. It’s all about deference. It’s all about silence. It’s all about disappearance.
Martin Luther's Christmas Book
Martin Luther - 1948
This beautiful new gift edition of a classic collection combines all three. In thirty compelling Christmas excerpts from his sermons, Luther vividly portrays the human realism of the Nativity: Mary's distress at giving birth with no midwife or water; Joseph's misgivings; the Wise Men's perplexity; and Herod's cunning. Throughout, Luther suggests the question: If we had lived in Bethlehem when Jesus was born, would we have believed that this newborn baby was God in human form? And he reminds us that keeping Christmas is a year-around mission of caring for those in need. Nine elegant illustrations by Luther's contemporaries-including four by noted engraver Albrecht Durer-capture timeless scenes from the Christmas story. And two of Luther's beautiful Christmas carols are included on the final pages of the book.
I Never Knew You
Patrick Higgins - 2020
A promising career. Good health. A beautiful house. A promising relationship. Most importantly, she was a proud member of the largest and most popular megachurch in all of Seattle—the Blessed and Highly Favored Full Gospel Church.Everything started changing in her seemingly perfect life after a pastor visiting from China created such an uproar at her church, with messages most members found both mean spirited and judgmentally offensive, that Mark Lau was asked to leave and told never to come back.It took traveling all the way to Shanghai, China, with her best friend, Meredith Geiger, for Charmaine to discover the many differences between her church, which was opulent in every sense of the word, and Pastor Lau’s church, which was located beneath a dry cleaners, of all places.Even more telling were the messages both pastors preached. Despite that they taught from the very same Book, their messages couldn’t have been anymore polarizing. While Charmaine was instantly intrigued by the whole “underground” experience, Meredith was so traumatized that she cut short what had been the best vacation of her life, to go back to the States. But not before alarming Charmaine’s boyfriend of the grave danger they faced. Rodney Williams then told lead pastors, Julian and Imogen Martín, who flew 5,700 miles from Seattle to China, to rescue her from the so-called pastor who’d already caused some to leave their megachurch.Upon arriving, they learned their suspicions were quickly confirmed. Mark Lau had used his subterranean gathering place to radically change Charmaine’s way of thinking. Despite her strongest protests, they flat-out refused to believe that God had used him to transform her life and deepen her faith, to the extent that she finally had eternal assurance.Tragically for the Martíns, by the time they discovered the prosperity Gospel they’d been preaching was a false one, it would be too late…

The Sunday School Teacher
Cole Hart - 2018
It didn’t happen until my mother fell ill and God took her away from me for no reason at all. Cancer, they say. But I needed to hear it from God, so I began talking with him every day until my friends started calling me crazy. At that point, I started removing myself from the “IN” crowd and became a loner. I left Augusta, Georgia a little over a year after I graduated from high-school and took a Greyhound bus to Atlanta. From that point, I lived in a women’s shelter and joined a pretty decent church. Then, I found my position as the Sunday school teacher. I loved working with the youths. That was until I met a man. The man that my Pastor had warned me about. He knew him so well because they were brothers from the same womb. I should have turned away then. God was trying to tell me something. Instead, I fell into his powerful arms. Honestly, I didn’t see anything wrong with falling in love in church. Then, at the blink of an eye, I was standing in the courtroom, my eyes were filled with tears, and I was frightened. The jury had been deliberating for the last few hours, only to find me guilty on all counts. The judge wasn’t light on me either. He sentenced me to “Life” in a Georgia state women’s prison. And that’s when I stopped believing in God. Everyone has a testimony, but Annabelle Humphrey has a hope-filled and inspirational story about faith, love, friendship and redemption that will certainly grab you from the first page to the very last one.
